I need advice for juice testing
submitted about 5 years ago by Zeillla

Hello, I’m new to vaping and have only just started experimenting with some DIY mixing. Can I ask what you all use to test out your new flavours with? I’m considering getting a new device just to test out new flavours as I can’t possibly change cotton/ coils that often. Any suggestions? I’ve only got a few pod type vapes like the Caliburn and a Hellvape MD RTA on a Vaporesso Baby Tarot. Thanks everyone.

You're getting a lot of good suggestions that have no relevance to how you vape at all.

You vape MTL; get a MTL RDA. Anything different is going to give you a different result.

Also, it's worth getting another mod, or a cheaper mod. I like to rest flavors in 10ml batches so I can vape that flavor for a while dripping into the RDA until it's gone. 5ml for MTL.

I second this! While everyone else's ideas are right for them if you only vape mtl this is your best option!

I used the Hadaly clone rda and a Wasp rda to test flavours. I've heard from different people if it's a pain to rewick just have a bottle of unflavored vg at hand and vape that between different flavours. I've tried that and it seems to work, but if the flavoring was too strong it will be present in the next test, so that's not ideal. I've also tried the no wick... if you have a fused clapton or a big massive coil, you can do that, but be careful you can to like 1 or 2 pulls of of it, and then burn dry the coil and add juice, to test again. You should also consider blowing on the coil to get the heat down a bit, so the juice does not get too hot and unpleasant. Hope that helps.

I use either the hadaly or the citadel clone RDAs. I got some from FastTech for under £10 and they work perfectly. They’re super easy and fast to re-wick. Easy to build. Plus the flavour is great.

I also sometimes use the Wasp Nano RDA as it’s easy and quick to rewick. It’s also a cheap RDA to buy so I got a few of them. I personally think I get more saturated flavour from the Hadaly and Citadel.

But a piece of advice someone gave me was to test in whatever RDA you’re gonna vape with so you can tailor your recipes to how you vape.

Get a wasp nano rda. Can usually find them for under 15 bucks. Super simple single coil rda. Easy to throw some cotton In and test.

I concur. Wasp nano is the best RDA if you're looking at testing juices. I use the Wasp myself.

I concur with this concur. Fast and easy to re-wick, plus it's a great little flavor banger.

Try to blind test a few newer RDAs and youll figure out that they all taste pretty much the same.

I concur. While pretty much any half-decent single coil RDA will work for the purpose, the Wasp Nano is by far the best bargain-priced RDA. In fact, it is superior to many RDAs that cost significantly more.

Just ordered one of these, after all the concurrences.

You should test your flavors with what you'll be vaping with or something similar. If you don't want to use your Caliburn or MD tank, get an RDA with similar performance/airflow. The wasp Nano is fine to do testing with but it's a different animal. It's got a lot of airflow. You should get a Hadaly or Entheon type for restricted DL or get a MTL RDA. Order clones if you don't feel like being bent over the rail.

An rda. Put the cotton in it to where it barely sticks out both sides of your coil. Drip then vape. Take the cotton out, rinse repeat

That’s more what I had in mind but I just wasn’t sure about doing it. That way I’m not leaving juice in the tank and having to clean it out each time I can just try them out. When I started making juices I’d have one flavour with lots of variations, you know a bit more of this or that and I wanted to test them at the same time so I’d remember which ones were best. Thanks. I’m going to try this method out.

For MTL testing I can recommend the Vapefly Holic RDA. Cheap, good quality, really good flavor. It’s a nice Atty.

Just get an RDA that you feel comfortable with, that isn't a hassle to clean and rewick. If you aren't sure what RDA to get just look up some reviews.

Personally I use an Asgard Mini on a Vaporesso Gen. It all comes down to what you prefer that will give you the best access to flavor.

I use an Asmodus C4 for flavor testing. Any DTL or MTL RDA that you actually enjoy building is going to be your best bet imo. For me, the C4 is so simple that I can build and wick it in about ten minutes reliably. That means I'll end up getting through more of my flavor tests, as opposed to giving up when I have to rewick and it's too much of a pain to keep going.

Some good MTL RDAs in no particular order:

  • Berserker v2 RDA
  • 1928 RDA
  • Citadel
  • Hadaly

DTL RDAs:

  • Recurve Single
  • C4

If you're doing a lot of single flavor tests in a row, you could consider buying a few of whatever atomizer you end up settling on, and wicking them all at once to save some time.

I just invested in an asguard mini and it changed the game. I could taste everything so much more than on previous rdas I had used

I use a Vaporesso Luxe S with a Profile mesh RDA and I drip the flavor I'm testing at 60 watts in a batch of either 10ml or 15ml.

Using VandyVape Phobia RDA for restrictive-airflow hits, GeekVape Griffin 25 TA for MTL style and mostly using Wismec Theorem RDTA. With the Theorem, I can drip juice on a fresh wick, pop off the glass, re-wick and then re-test. If it's something I want to keep vaping, I fill up the tank under the build deck.

My style is restricted lung hits... either slow or somewhat faster air draw. I can open the airflow up way wider on the Phobia, but it feels weird trying to gasp in my full air capacity in one or two seconds.

Thank you everyone, there’s some really good advice here, like vaping plain VG in between flavours and testing on what I’ll be using most of the time. I might try out the Asgard Mini, it seems pretty popular. I really appreciate everyone’s help. I’ve learnt vape styles are as varied as people themselves.

The Asgard Mini (DTL Dual Coil) is not a good option if you are testing liquids for use in a Caliburn or Hellvape MD (MTL).
