As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week, this is also where you can comment to win the the Alchemist Flavor Pack ($70 value!) from Flavorah and the new Flavorah recipe book!

This pack is Flavorah's nuttiest and it includes Beer Nuts,Hazelnut, Kinako Soy,Peanut Butter, Pistachio, Carrot, Clove, Fire Cinnamon, Ginger, Heat, Lovage Root, Oak Barrel, Persimmon Spice, Red Cinnamon, Wood Spice, and Yam.

Ah nuts, I better get back to testing all these walnuts.

See you all on Noted!

I think my only experience has been with Fa walnut. Great flavor but shamefully soft. It gets lost in a mix very quickly if it’s put up against some tougher flavors. Around 3% is where I’ve used it.

The thing that stood out the most to me trying FA Walnut is how wet it is. Or at least, very moist compared to other nuts. It's juicy, a juicy nut.

by isuamadogabout 5 years agoRenaissance Mixer

Interesting. I used it also in something I’m going to come back to (and hopefully get right this time). Really excited for this episode. No spoilers...

Edit: meaning I think I can use that wetness to my advantage.

Like isuamadog I only have and know FA Walnut. So far I used it in the following recipes (not mine):

Castle Long Clone

Greek Donuts

For me the walnut is not very prominent in both recipes, but plays more of a supporting role.

I'm not sure if I've used a Walnut flavoring. FA Hazelnut and Mixed Nuts are both very good. I'll have to grab some Walnuts next time.

I haven’t tried awol nut yet. I’ve used almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, and varieties of them.

Caramel walnut ice cream sounds good though.

It's a shame, that walnuts aren't more popular when it comes to vaping and mixing. I get sad when I check Chefs for walnut and find, that all they got is VT and WF.

Although I have heard that WF Walnut is supposed to be good. Though, I think ID10-T might disagree.

I noticed the same thing. Just ordered FA walnut but don't see a lot of recipes using it. Looking forward to experimenting a bit. Something tells me it might pair well with some TFA banana nut bread. Hmmmm

I think WF Walnut is good. Not quite as accurately Walnutty as I’d like it to be, but certainly not yucky

Not a fan of walnuts and don't have any in my stash, but maybe if y'all make one sound good enough I might buy it.

Walnuts are such a dry nut. It seems like that is lost in walnuts I've tried. I think a sweet and savory recipe could benefit from walnut. It seems lost in desserts and cookies.

by KiltOfDoomabout 5 years ago

The dream walnut flavor would be the one that can truly capture the full flavor of an English walnut fresh off the tree lightly toasted. Most flavors don't ring true and most walnuts IRL tend to taste like dirt to me. Nuts are tricky.

Never used walnut, i do like the real thing tho. Good in a mix with other nuts and raisins.

Also, need good raisin flavors, fotw in the future?

Noted Ep. 159: WALNUTS (ft. DuncanYoyo1)

(Episode aired 14th July 2020)

(Ranked from worst to first by DuncanYoyo1)

Bickford Maple Walnut: At 0.5% little bit of maple. Not really any walnut. So sweet it was almost syrupy. Lingering peppery type spice aftertaste. At 1% stronger maple. Like the cheapest maple syrup. At 3% unvapeable. Let it steep for a week, but no change. Tested at 0.5%, 1% and 3%. 7.00

Bickford Walnut: At 0.5% a little plastic-y. Hints of walnut syrup. Not quite as sweet as Bickford Maple Walnut. At 1% started to get some nuttiness. But has a plastic and soap aftertaste. At 3% a lot stronger walnut syrup note, a little harsh. The soap of note was very prominent. Didn't change after a week's steep. Tested at 0.5%, 1% and 3%. 8.54

Bickford Black Walnut: May be usable? But did have some off notes. At 0.5% was pretty weak. Some earthy, tannin type notes. Had a plastic-y, peppery spice. At 1% still pretty weak. More of an earthy sweetness. Kind of like a walnut syrup. Hint if soapiness. At 3% started to get an actual walnut flavour. Sweetness is still present. Plastic-y aftertaste, but not much stronger than it was at lower %s. Didn't change after a week's steep. Tested at 0.5%, 1% and 3%. 11.17

Fairy's Finest Black Walnut: At 0.5% hardly any flavour, besides a bit of a cardboard note. At 1% a little nuttiness, but still light in flavour. At 3% dry earthy note. Almost nutty. Pretty bland. Play-doh type off note. Very thin, not much body at all. Tested at 0.5%, 1% and 3%. 13.35

(From here on are usable/ viable flavours)

LA Black Walnut: Not spectacular, but is black walnut. At 0.5% mostly earthy sweetness. Maybe a little nut flavour. But distinctly walnut. A little bit of spice on the inhale and a little bit of a syrupy note, but slight and definitely manageable. At 1% got less nutty and a little bit more syrupy. Earthy walnut in the aftertaste. A little bit more sweetness than 0.5%. At 3% far too strong. Just syrup and off notes. Got very bitter. Body got very thin, sharp. If your looking for a hint of walnut and earthy sweetness 0.5-1% may work. Would probably be better used in a bakery or ice cream rather than a tobacco just because of the sweetness it has. Although may work in a desert tobacco. Although there are better options. Tested at 0.5%, 1% and 3%. 16.58

NF (Nature's Flavors) Walnut: At 0.5% a really light, creamy walnut. Petty good body, even at 0.5%. No off notes. Nicely earthy. Overall great flavour. At 1% creamy note became a little more prominent. Started to cover the nuttiness a bit, although still distinctly walnut. At 3% was pretty strong, probably the upper limit. Not bad, but some bitter notes. The cream was pretty prominent. Has an almost maraschino cherry type of smell at 3%, so could be using a combo of almond and walnut flavouring. Can't taste any cherry, just smells like that. Tested at 0.5%, 1% and 3%. 2% should be plenty. 3% probably the upper limit, very strong. 19.51

FA Walnut: Oddly it's wet or moist for a nut. But isn't creamy. Especially strange for FA as their fruits and nuts tend to be overly dry. Reduces the accuracy somewhat, more like walnut milk or walnut water. But the flavour is pretty accurate. Does taste like a walnut. But it's lacking a little in the nuttiness. Has the earthy, somewhat sharp top note of a walnut right up front. The body is sweeter and a little less distinct. Kind of thick, especially for something so wet. DuncanYoyo gets a muskiness, not unpleasant though. Could use it to counteract the dryness other nut flavours may have? Like the nut version of INW Cactus. Did into a lot of different profiles. Could work in a tobacco that you don't want to be so dry. Or for something like a cake or banana bread recipe. Potent, so if you're using just to add nutty moisture would have to be careful with how much you use. Pretty potent. Around 1% is the max. 3% is just bitter and nasty. 23.05

VT Walnut: At 0.5% up front walnut flavour, earthy, very full. Slight bitter skin note. Hint of peanut, but isn't too distracting, just fills in the nutty body. At 1% pretty strong walnut flavour. At 3% bought the bitter top note to the front. Really strong walnut aftertaste. If you were developing a commercial eliquid where you wanted a lingering walnut flavour you may want to use it that high. Drier than FA, so more accurate in that regard. Versatile. Anywhere a walnut would fit this flavour would probably work. Bakeries, tobaccos etc. Tested at 0.5%, 1% and 3%. Pretty potent for VT. Strong walnut flavour at 1%. DY wouldn't use it much higher. 0.5% would probably be his sweet spot to add a hint of walnut. 27.43

WF Walnut: Cheeba tested at 3%, was pretty harsh. 3% is too high. Emily Tested it initially at 2.5% then at 1%. 1% had just as much flavour, but was not more pleasant and smooth. She thought it was more of a good generic nut flavour, rather than specifically a walnut. Had a nice darkness and a nice sweetness that round it out and makes it less astringent. But Cheeba thought it was definitely a walnut. DY thought 0.5% was the sweet spot. Got a strong, authentic walnut flavour. Earthy, bold, full bodied. Thought it got a little bitter top note at 3%, but wasn't harsh. A touch of AP. ID10-T didn't get any harshness at 2% and he is sensitive. Thought it was really smooth. Had a little sharpness, verging on bitter. But made it more accurate to a walnut, although was still had a little bit a generic nut quality. But not peanut-y at all. The sharpness that it has can come across as harsh or exacerbate other sharper flavours. DuncanYoyo tested at 0.5%, 1% and 3%. Emily tested at 1% and 2.5%. ID10-T tested at 2%. Cheeba tested at 3%. 30.32

Has anyone tried Walnut VTA?

Saw it on chefsflavours. Looked it up on ELR. Some people say it tastes like walnuts. Others say pecans.

Also, thoughts on Walnut (SC) WF?

1 points

by ID10-Tabout 5 years agoWinner: Best Recipe of 2019 - Counter Punch

I haven't tried VT Walnut.

WF Walnut seems to suffer from the same issue as some of the other WF nut flavors, they don’t taste very accurate to the nut on the bottle, but there doesn’t seem to be anything else wrong with them. This one is a little more walnutty than the others are macadamia-y or cashew-y; it has that bit of earthy sharpness you expect from a walnut, while still being a pretty mellow, soft flavor. Still more generic nut (not peanut at all) though. More crisp at first, but with a dry and almost chalky finish yet still smooth to vape. Very subdued sweetness.

Well...thank you for limiting yourself to 1 pun/post; last week was just too much.

Are pecans included as a subtype of walnut? If not, I guess we're just talking about a single flavor (FA Walnut)...or are there other walnuts that have escaped my attention?

How'd I do that? I had no profound insights about walnut, nor any recipe featuring it, to share...

That said, I'm excited to try some FLV flavors that will be new to me. Of the 16, there are 9 that I don't have and at least 5 of those sound so weird that I'd probably never have paid to try them.

I have tried inawera walnut and atmos lab walnut, both are pretty bad. Also tried flavor west butter/maple pecan and elda pecan, not a big fan. In the end, when i need a good nut, i use inawera 3 five (favorite hazlenut flavor).

Speaking of nuts, i'd kill for a good chestnut flavor.

Thanks to u/jasone414 I can experiment with FA Walnut, but but that's it for walnut. Now if you're talking hazelnut or butter pecan we're good. I've made some Bust A Nut by Alisa from the BCF Community recipes and that's stellar 👍

by cxxxxpabout 5 years ago

I haven't tried any walnut specific flavours, but I did try VT Carrot Cake and found the walnut to be very forward in this. It's not really a onehsot, it's more a few spice notes, cake and walnut notes to point you in the right direction. I find VTs recommended percentages to be a bit high in general. FYI, 8% was too high with this one for me, Im unsure what that walnut note is like at a lower %, but I thought I'd still chip in anyway. The walnut is more prominent on the exhale at 8% at least.

1 points

by Ziggy-Wayabout 5 years ago

I really enjoy VTA Carrot Cake. Never thought of Walnuts in it, but now that you mention it, I'll be more attentive next time I give it a vape. I agree that recomended percentages are a bit on the high side, 3% is plenty in a mix for me. Not that its bad at 6% though, just overly sweet...

Irl i love walnuts . I have to stop myself from buying them or I'll gorge myself , so a great concentrate would be welcomed - however I think it's likely I'll be disappointed .I would be interested to see if anyone can suggest how FA or WF walnut can be wrangled into a more authentic flavour .

by Teezixxabout 5 years ago

I've only ever tried FA walnut, once in a recipe that I can't seem to find atm I used 1% FA walnut, 3% FW dutch apple pie, Cap waffle (don't judge) at a % i don't remember, AP at 0.5% with some apple I can't remember which. the reason I remember this particular combination is that it just tasted like a MOUTHFUL of slightly stale walnut with other things around, and it lingered which I enjoyed a lot for some reason. I found myself masochistically reaching for that tank a couple times a day.

They definitely would go well with banana nut bread. Is that a breakfast bread? Seems like more of an any time night or day bread to me, except when it's in the shape of a muffin, then it somehow becomes a breakfast bread even it it's the same stuff that's in the shape of a loaf.
