Re-using juice bottles
submitted about 5 years ago by rayquazza74

Not sure if it’s common practice to re-use vape juice bottles or if I should just throw em out rather than clean them and maybe just go with a new bottle. What do you all do? Sort of new to DIY vape but let me know what you guys do. Thanks!

I used to reuse all bottles, but now I pretty much exclusively use the same 5 glass 60ml bottles with dropper caps. It was much more difficult to get the old flavors out of plastic unicorn bottles, and after 1-2 re-uses the risk of the tip popping off and dumping juice all over my hand (and maybe mod, too, if using a top fill) was unacceptable. I just wash them out and let them air dry about a half hour before mixing something else. No issues with bleed-over from even flavors using INW Cactus, Menthol, or WS-23, which are the big offenders for me with coils and "sticky" flavors.

I wanted to refill a 15 ml plastic tip bottle as a "backup" in case of an unplanned need to refill when out and about, but I could not get the tip off. Is there some tool needed? (I have arthritic hands, so I do not have much hand strength; e.g., I need use Channellock pliers to open a soda bottle, but pulling on the thin juice bottle tip with those would crush the tip.)

I use my wire nippers. They’re thin enough to get inbetween the tip and bottle. work one side then the other. Eventually you will have a gap and you can just pop it off

Needle nose pliers work well.

Bull City Flavors has a cap removal tool, I threw one in my cart on my last order, it works good too, I think it was around $3.

EDIT: That cap removal tool might not be best tool for people like the OP with arthritis as it isn't very big - 1 3/4" at its widest x 2" long x 1/16" thick. Thought I'd better throw that out there.

Use something thin like a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry the edges of the tip up on all sides until it pops off. I wouldn't use a knife. I used my Gerber Shard which I had on my keys since 2012.

There is a tool that is meant to do several type of bottle tips but I've never managed to get it to work, even after multiple youtube vids.

I just wipe the top off from any liquid, put some tissue or kitchen towel over it and pull it off with my teeth.

I use 30ml bottles that I've bought for refilling, and I use them constantly, and doing it that way doesn't seem to squish the tip (I feel I can tell if I'm squishing them via teeth better), then I just put it back on.

Not the most conventional way, but it works for me.

My fondest memories of DIY will be getting drunk and trying to get the tip of a unicorn bottle off with a knife.

It really does depend on the flavor profile. I personally give mine a good rinse and reuse them. There are some i don't think i would do that with, lemons and menthol profiles come to mind, but it's not gonna hurt nothing to use the same bottle for the type of mix even if it isn't the exact same mix.

I always keep a few, especially the caps. Caps get busted up sometimes and it’s good to have spares. I never throw away glass, it’s like gold

I reuse the same bottles time and time again. I tend to mix the same types in the bottles of the original juices.

I just wash them out and reuse them. I wash them with water only as the e-liquid is very water solluble.

For my all day vapes, I’ve been using the same bottles for about 6 months. Other than that, I use glass for liquids I know I’ll swap out after I get through whatever amount of it I mixed. I use 15ml plastic bottles to make test batches but I vape them so quick, I can rinse them out.

I reuse my bottles until they start getting creased and weird. I use the same bottle when I make the same recipe again. The others I will rinse with hot water and air dry. For stubborn aromas, I soak them in warm water with a little Dawn, scrub them with a bottle brush, rinse thoroughly, and air dry. If there is still a lingering scent, I use the bottle for a similar flavor profile. I would hate to think of all the money I would spend on bottles if I didn't reuse them. Eventually they do need to be thrown out, but I try to save money and waste by reusing them for as long as possible.

"Chubby Gorilla" brand, or any other PET plastic bottle, can be cleaned and reused. I throw the bottle, tip and cap in a bucket with hot water and dish soap: let sit for 15-20 minutes. Rinse and re-submerge in clean hot water for 15-20 minutes. Let stand for 24 hours for them to really dry.

I do find that HDPE and LDPE are susceptible to leaching.

Glass bottles are easy to clean of residual aromas, and indefinitely reusable. Plastic not so much, but plastic bottles can be reused for the same or similar recipes.

I reuse most of my unicorn bottles, usually for the same mix. 15ml from River supply are the most common ones that get a reuse. The game changed when I bought the removal tool from BullCity. For the price you can’t beat it. I carry it around on my key ring so I never lose it

Like a tool to take the tips off the bottles without shoving my fingernails in there?! I need that!

Yup there is a tool for it. BullCityFlavors.com is where I got mine

I’ve got a gallon of Pg I use to lightly rinse out the bottle then use it again

I have my bottles labeled with the main flavor (apple, root beer, tea, lemon, peach, etc.) I reuse my bottles, but always use the main profile so if any lingering flavor remains after washing, then it's not a big deal. I do also only mix for myself so I know where my bottles have been and how they were handled. If I were mixing for someone else, I would use a new bottle every time.

I don't even wash them. I'm pretty convinced that I'm an undertaster, though. I also don't build/wick and just pour different juices onto the same store bought coils, which I think would have some folks around here in apoplexies. Bless their delicate, delicate palettes - I do envy them.

I soak unicorn bottles in dish soap for an hour or so and wash them out and air dry. I have some 120ml glass bottles I've used for Nic that are probably 6 years old. I have reused the same 6 230ml plastic bottles for a year or more.

I use plastic bottles but only once then I dispose of them because certain chemicals used in all kinds of flavours will gradually wear the inside of the bottle down and you'll end up vaping plastic particles. It's the same reason you don't reuse coke or Pepsi bottles. I do this because of the proven links to cancer, but you do you.

Wait, people actually throw away bottles after using them only once?

Make sure ur sanitizing. I throw mine after about 3-4 mixes.

Glass is the most re-usable and the safest. To my knowledge, all of the following are BPA-free:

PET(PETG) is one of the relatively safest plastics to use. It is easiest to get the aroma/smell/odor out of these. They do crease with repeated, heavy use.

HDPE bottles are popular and a decent plastic. It is harder to remove the aroma from these. Leeching is more of a problem if they're exposed to heat.

LDPE is the ones you shouldn't use more than 2-5 times, if at all. More susceptible to leeching because of the lower density and also less resistant to some chemical compounds.

PCTG is going to be a great alternative but is only being used to make baby-feeding bottles and some drink-ware at this time (no small bottle sizes). It is rather rigid like PET/PETG.

Do not use strong chemicals to clean plastics like ammonia or bleach. You probably don't want any residue from these in your bottle when you mix the ingredients into them either. Use mostly soap and water. Be careful in that some dish-soaps will leave behind a taste/smell if they soak long.

And if you're using the bottle to make the same recipe, you don't have to bother washing them out that well, if at all!!

Unless you’re putting the same juice into the bottle use a new one. Flavorings tends to stick to the bottle so you’ll get a blend of your old and new juice

If you're going to be throwing away so much plastic, please use glass bottles. They don't tend to keep flavours.

Oh gotcha makes sense! I mostly just do fruity candy type blends.

Menthol for sure would taint whatever it comes into contact with!! Once made the mistake of trying a menthol brand in a new coil and I pretty much had to change the coil out because I could not get that menthols Flavor out lol

Thanks for the tip!

Why is this downvoted? It's true and good advice.

Well thank you! I don’t know why it got down voted so much either. I’ve heard so many other diy people say the same thing and that’s what I do so the down votes are confusing

No, don't reuse them as the plastic can degrade over time and you definitely do not want to be vaping plastic particles in to your lungs. If you can afford it go with glass bottles then you can always wash and reuse them.

Would you advise glass container to keep in you pocket for a quick outdoor refill?
