Storage And Precaution
submitted about 5 years ago by LieutenantRektDelightfully Mediocre

Hello everyone,

After a few months of switching from smoking to vaping, I decided to started mixing my own eLiquid. I am pleasantly surprised by the results of some of the recipes I found online, not to mention the cost savings😳 Anyway, I decided to go with a lower concentration because I'm new and it seems like less of a hazard, I got 500ml 36mg/ml suspended in PG.

I've looked around online and it seems freezing is the best way to store nicotine? My only issue with this is that I do not want nicotine anywhere near my refrigerator. I have a safe mounted VERY high, I can barely reach it, and I was wondering if this would work as a storage if the temperature is kept below 22° in the room?

Then, how dangerous is 36mg/ml really? I'm using nitrile gloves when working with it but what if I got a decent amount on my hands or the inhaling while working with it, should I be wearing a N95 respirator or something similar as well?

I'm apologise if this seems like overly cautious concerns but safety very important.

Thanks.

36 mg/ml is not dangerous. Neither is 100 if you use common sense. You actually would have saved money ordering 100 mg/ml. You are being too paranoid about this. Even if you had 100 mg/ml spilled on your skin, just go wash it off. It will cause you no harm.

I wish I could be less paranoid. I had a Twisp many years ago and went into a full blown anxiety attack after getting a drop of eLiquid on my hand. The anxiety attack, mind you, made the symptoms of nicotine poisoning even more realistic😅

Anyway, thanks, this is genuinely the kind of thing I need to hear. I'd upvote it twice if I could.

Yeah. Unless you drink the straight nicotine, you are not in harms way

For contrast, I’ll recount a story of under-precaution. I buy 100mg nic and split into 30ml glass for storage in a freezer, which is a system that works well for me. I take care when splitting a large bottle of 100mg nic, but I never worry too much about the 30ml bottles. I accidentally spilled about 1/3 of a 30ml bottle on pants, office chair, and carpet. I wiped the table down and changed clothes and had no problems. However, I was getting residual contact exposure from the chair and floor (bare or stocking feet) until I thoroughly washed them with a carpet cleaner. I mean, I ran multiple gallons of water through the carpet cleaner, then set a dehumidifier to dry things out. Also, ran the contaminated clothes through the wash 3 times. I’m still not sure the floor is good yet. At least my vape den got a good cleaning. :-) Lessons learned:

  • Don’t have carpet in you vape den/mixing area if you can help it
  • When working with 100mg, if you can see the exposure you’re fine if you wash/rinse right away. If it gets into clothes/flooring/furniture, take care to get it out again. And don’t let it happen in the first place.

Dude, people VAPE 36mg/ml. I don't think you need gloves when working with it, lol

Lol. I saw that just now, I can't believe it. How many packs a day were they on. I started at 12mg and now it seems too strong so I down to 9mg MTL.

But. I think I'll rather take the cautious route anyway, I still rush to wash my hands after getting 9mg on it😢

You’re way too paranoid. Relax

Iirc juul and the like (vuse) and such are 48mg of nicotine. The more packs you smoke a day, the higher amount you need in the beginning

I work with 100mg/mL all the time and i never use gloves, but that's because I have my bottles completely open and I'm using a scale to fo my measurements. If I was still using my syringes I'd wear gloves but I'm not and I generally tend to be very cautious. Even if I got it directly on my skin I'd just wash it off. It's not bad as long as you keep that in mind.

Now, if i was working with higher concentrations I'd definitely wear gloves like you are, but as it is I'm not in high concentrations. So.....

How many mg/ml would you say is in the higher territory and how do you store your nicotine?

Decant nicotine into 1-4 oz. amber glass boston round bottles (the only thing you should be buying from Amazon). Keep one out for a working bottle (stored in a cool, dark place) and the rest go into a freezer.

Anything above 100 mg/mL is considered high to me.

As for storage I put some into 30 mL bottles and then in a plastic bag to label what they are to everyone else in the house and me in case for some odd reason I forget... Then any remainder has stayed in the original bottle and that's in the freezer as well. I just make sure lids and caps are on tight and they can't tip over, but it's stored right along side food. You just have to take precautions to keep it from coming in contact with it......

How long would it be good for if it weren't frozen? I'm looking at maybe mixing all this within 2 or 3 months and having a bunch of mixed eliquids for myself and some of my buddies. Or is it a absolute MUST to freeze them?

Thanks u/TimInElmira as well, I appreciate your advice.

Decant into glass then put them into tupperware boxes. They stack on top of each other, then stuff them in the back of your freezer

If I spill anything on my hands while I'm mixing I will usually just lick it off. These people that wear gloves are paranoid. I've even heard of people wearing face shields and using ventilation fans. I mean come on, it's diluted nicotine, not ebola.

I was going to say something similar but i figure people are just scared of what they don't know... it just takes some research so I'm glad they're asking us instead of just listening to the rhetoric 🤘

How do you get the vg/pg/nic from the larger bottles into your mixing bottles? I am starting out soon and wondering how I will get the vg out of the 1 gallon jug into a 10 ml tester

I got a DIY mixers kit and use the little funnels that came with it to do that with the nic. The VG and PG that I got came with twist caps for pouring directly from them so that's what I do with those.

If i was you I'd get like litre bottles or a little smaller to work out of though... I ordered my first kit from River Supply Co. The only thing I didn't opt for in it was a scale and it did good to get me off the ground running and i definitely got a scale afterwards though LoL...

Freezing is best way to store nicotine. If you can keep it cool or out of sunlight it will still last longer than being out in the open. But it wont last as long as freezing. People vape the amount youre handling.

Im a paranoid bitch, I bought a gallon of 100mg nic, which will most likely last my entire life, and I wore gloves and separated it into smaller bottles to go in the lockable deep freezer over top a plastic shower curtain with gloves on. But to be fair, its not that dangerous, I just had to have more precaution cause I have pets and a kid and didnt want to spill any to have residual left over. I mixed myself a 40mg bottle of just nic+pg to be my working bottle anyway. So you should be fine, if you spill any, clean it up, wash your hands or any skin that touched it, and as with all nicotine products: keep it away from children and pets.

I personally worry more about my stupid cats getting poisoned other than myself. I just wash my hands and yell at the cats when they come near me while doing anything with high nic juice. Hell, I yell at them when I fill my tanks. I should stop yelling at my cats...

Well, guess it's time to finally give this a go. I love the information I have learned from this sub.

It seems like the best route if you see yourself vaping for a long time.

I just worked out how much my favourite flavour costs me to make. 44c (AUD) per 10ml $2.64 per 60ml bottle compared to $25-$30 for a premixed is a huge saving. Enjoy your mixing 😊

Jesus christ! That is so much cheaper than me just buying premade juice.
