TPA VBIC peppery tasters I need your help.
submitted over 5 years ago by baade89

u/vergaerd reached out to me asking if I could map out the use of Piperonal because it could be a cause of peppery taste in some vanilla flavors.

This is a good theory and to see if it’s Piperonal I’ll reach out to TPA over the weekend, before I do that I want to ask those of you who gets that peppery taste what other flavors you get it from.

If it’s not Piperonal then I’ll look for similarities in more flavors to see if I can find a reason for a peppery note.

TFA White Chocolate tastes equally peppery to me.

Noted. Would you say it’s the same taste?

It is funny. When I first tried, I tried to like TFA vanilla bean ice cream, but got pepper from it. But I didn't give up. A few months later, i mixed again with the same bottle, I stopped tasting pepper. And got delicious creamy vanilla! Miracle! Got a new bottle, it was the same goodness. I smell pepper from the bottle, but not on the mix.

I also smell pepper on TFA Vanilla custard and TFA white chocolate. But I don't taste it on finished ejuice anymore.

Weird, maybe it’s a receptor sensitivity?

Good for you that you didn’t give up!

Yes, it should also be said that this post is why I reached out to one of the creators (baade89) of the safety compendium.

Piperonal which comes from Piperine which comes from black pepper. So that might be it.

Correct, you could also get piperonal by demethylating of Vanillin.

I’m still unsure about the process and what chemicals that could be used, so I’ll have to talk with someone more knowledgeable.

demethylating? That's a word?

Yes, it’s probably not the most used word out there but it refers to the chemical process Demethylation which removes/replaces a methyl group.

I've not tried everything out there and have been reluctant to further explore this profile, but so far I'm getting pepper from:

TPA Vanilla Custard

TPA VBIC

CAP Cake Batter

LB VIC

I've seen some pepper tasters mentioning vanilla flavorings I do not get it from, so maybe this is worth adding too:

CAP Vanilla Custard v1

CAP Vanilla Cupcake v2

CAP Vanilla Whipped Cream

TPA French Vanilla Cream

TPA Vanilla Swirl

And although the following are light on vanilla I do not get it from these either:

INW Custard

FA Custard Premium

FA Creme Fresh

I'll update in the next few days as I'm SFT-ing TPA VC 2 and CAP VBIC in the next few days.

One thing that cap cake batter, tpa Vanilla custard and VBIC has in common is the use of anis in the form of anisyl alcohol(tpa) and anisic aldehyde(cap). Its found in vanilla swirl aswell so im unsure if that could be the cause.

Well from what I have learned its has to the person, not necessarily the flavor. A certain % of people taste pepper, like some people are strawberry blind and can't taste it at all. It is the chemical molecules much as in wine Beer or liquor tasting not everyone's taste buds and sense of smell are the same.

You are correct and we are probably looking at a taste/smell receptor that either misinterpret or are very sensitive compared to others. If it’s a sensitivity issue then it will most likely disappear or lower the amount of peppery notes if they continue to use it.

It could still be good to know what chemical that causes it.

According to TFA website piperonal, isn't in VBIC. It is in a handful of other flavors though. Including dx vanilla cupcake, French vanilla deluxe, vanilla cupcake, vanilla custard 2

If it’s their msds list you are referring to then it’s information derived from GC/MS and not their formula. Even if it’s listed there it doesn’t mean it’s in there, that’s why I am going to reach out to them.

I get it from free base nicotine. I don't get it from nic salts.

That just sounds like you had bad freebase though.

I agree. I have vaped both and never noticed a difference in taste

I suggest you try LB Vanilla ice cream, it's the best and no pepper taste

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don’t get a peppery note from these. I’m just looking into why others get it.
