I'm nuttelling you what the Flavor of the Week is until you ask Nicely
submitted over 5 years ago by ID10-TWinner: Best Recipe of 2019 - Counter Punch

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week, this is also where you can comment to win the Alchemist Flavors Pack ($70 value!) from Flavorah and the new Flavorah recipe book!

This pack includes Hazelnut, Beer Nuts, Peanut Butter, Pistachio, Carrot, Clove, Fire Cinnamon, Ginger, Heat, Kinako Soy, Lovage Root, Oak Barrel, Persimmon Spice, Red Cinnamon, Wood Spice, and Yam.

And, check this out, FOTW now features a neat new poll where you can vote for your flavorites:

#DIY SURVEY - VOTE HERE PLEASE

##DIY SURVEY - SEE PREVIOUS RESULTS HERE

#This week's flavor is... HAZELNUT!

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested!

>If you're not interested in the upcoming FOTWs, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

  • Past FOTW posts can be found here

  • The NOTED podcasts, which are basically video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

FW Hazelnut, until somebody can beat it THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE. It works so damn well in creams and milks. I've also found it goes well with the DX PB to make a creamy nutty mix of goodness, kinda wanna stick those 2 together with a bacco now.

Here's how I used it with creams and booze

Hazelnut reminds me of my ex mother in law. She was gross and always made everything with too much anything. Whatever goodness in this world could be ruined by her touch. Eggs cooked in grease. Extra oil drizzled on rice. Any way she could add fat, sugar or gross to something, she would. Her favorite? Cheap hazelnut flavored coffee with french vanilla cream creamer. It sends shivers down my spine to this day. I hope to shit I win the pack and the whole world hears this announcement of crimes against humanity as a warning to all who do horrible things. And this is a story of hope for all those who struggle. Freedom is a gift you must exercise to keep. I wish all you sodden son in laws find your way to higher ground as the murky waters of in laws fail to rise to match your glory. I’m waiting for you with an open hand at the top.

Both of my sisters are guilty of the hazelnut coffee with French vanilla or hazelnut creamer. I cannot even smell that without gagging anymore. Just reading the words hazelnut instantly made me think of this and then I smelled it in my head and got grossed out. I wonder if hazelnuts actually smell that way or it's just that every company uses the cheapest, shittiest smelling, chemicaly hazelnut they could find.

Yes... I see that. I enjoyed your comment. It just made me fear that other people are going to realize "if I win, he'll read my comment" and start abusing that to try to make me read whatever nonsense they'd get some jollies out of hearing me read. Mothers in law with bad taste in coffee is one thing, next time it might be propaganda or erotica or erotic propaganda or schizophrenic word salad, and we don't want to see the FOTW thread devolve into that.

Man, I love hazelnut.

Nutella, coffee creamer, those new(ish) hazelnut M&Ms, doesn't matter. They're tasty stuff.

Oddly, despite using hazelnut in two of my public recipes, I find myself using it to bolster other flavors rather than leaning into it.
Breakfast of the gods uses it to enhance the peanut butter DX
Apple bourbon bread pudding uses it to enhance the bready bits.

Might be it's high time I finally lean into the hazelnut with a mix this week.

I just received FW Hazelnut as well. I have been trying to find a good chocolate flavor to pair with it. Man, I wish we had a really good chocolate flavor.

2 points

by ID10-Tover 5 years agoWinner: Best Recipe of 2019 - Counter Punch

Both of those use FW Hazelnut as an additive in the not-enough-to-really-taste-like-hazelnut range. If were going to lean in to hazelnut, would you still choose that one? And would you go for Nutella/Ferrero Rocher/M&M, coffee creamer, roasted hazelnut, or something else?

I kind of want to vape Frangelico or any number of Frangelico cocktails, can you make that happen?

2 points

by Foment_lifeover 5 years agoSeto Kaiba

Oh they both very much use it as an enhancer, but that was my point. For as much as I love hazelnut I haven't made it into a vape yet

FW is still definitely in the running, though I suppose it will depend on what I actually want to do with it. I am really optimistic about Tasty Puff's Chocolate Hazelnut, but I haven't gotten to that one just yet for testing.

As to Frangelico, I need to get a bottle to taste it before I can commit to trying to wrestle that flavor into a cocktail. I do have reason to hit the liquor store this week anyhow though, so I'll see if they've got any.

What about hazelnut ice cream? That way you could go the hazelnut coffee creamer route, but minus the pitfalls of coffee or chocolate. Is hazelnut ice cream a thing? It should be. Probably WF Hazelnuts & Cream and a tiny bit of FA Hazel Grove (plus ice cream ingredients) for the win with that idea. Then instead of winding up hating yourself for trying to put the coffee in the vape, you just drink black coffee while vaping it.

I‘m thinking about adding FA Hazelnut on a recipe I‘m currently testing around with. It’s some kind of Apple Sesame Pastries. V1 looks like this:

1% INW Biscuit 0,75% TPA Dragonfruit 2% FA Fuji Apple 1,5% CAP NY Cheesecake 1% INW Sesame 3% CAP Sugar Cookie V2

The main flavours are apple and sesame obviously and it is a great mtl vape already but I think some hazelnut could be the golden ticket here. Maybe also a bit of Bavarian cream and slightly more Cheesecake on the next version.

I've got a doozie percentage-wise. . . Banana Brulee RY4, that uses MB Nut Banana, which has a pretty good hazelnut with their Soft Banana . . . not a straight-forward hazelnut, so I don't expect this post to be in consideration for the winnings. Really just wanted to share to highlight how the small percentage of Sweet & Smokey Tobacco really added to the overall nuttiness of the Nut Banana. This recipe was also a nod to /u/project_twenty5oh1 /Bigglesworth Labs' Prairie/Snowdrift (really his Grizzly Vapes Nanner/Polar Bear).

It played a prominent role, flavor-wise, in the Prairie/Snowdrift recipe . . . fairly certain it is Dekang tobacco (old school tobacco flavor). It works without it just fine, I just threw it in out of nostalgia's sake.

Hazelnut flavor sounds good in theory (I do enjoy the actual nut), but I've yet to encounter a situation where hazelnut is anything more than an inferior substitute for almond.

Seconding FW Hazelnut! I mtl and am astoundingly lazy so 2% hazelnut with any cream/custard/icecream/cookie is a godsend. I'll also add (maybe 1% or so) to cereals and to round out more complex pastries but that gets a bit lost with mtl. Also surprisingly nice with some fruits, I've tried with FA kiwi, CAP sweet mango, and strawberries - gives me mad pavlova and cream vibes.

It's got quite a natural creamy sweetness to it, the kind that comes when you roast nuts, and has a lovely heavy mouthfeel. Not great as a standalone though imo, just gives me a vague muted earthy sweet taste, and a bit of a burnt sugar taste though that might just be my coils lol

Well only the French would dare to bring out a flavour called " le Frenchy " so solubarome has ! It is supposed to be caramel coffee with hazelnut . Anyhows I'll mix up a tester today but knowing solub it might need a long steep . Smelling it i get black coffee with some dark sweetness and some sort of creamy nuttiness , finger testing it I really just get an astringent nut taste . I'll report back in a few days .

After a 4 day steep I regret not making more of this. I did a 10ml and should have done a 60.

The Hazlenut, swirl, and cream all came through great. The longer I vaped it the better it became. I did add some Super Sweet since I just can’t help myself. I like sweet vapes.

This would also make a great base for something down the line.

I’m going to mix a 30ml and let it sit for a week to let the cream age a little and take it from there.

When I think of hazelnut Nutella is the first thing in my mind. That and those damn ferrero rosher's. Damn I can't eat enough of those damn things. It's one of the recipes that I am chasing but outside of that I'm not big on nutty flavors so I do not yet own a few key ingredients that would be necessary for a successful recipe. It absolutely could and it sounds like a terrific idea. Not 100% sure which Hazelnut I would use for that at the moment. FW seems like the easiest and most obvious, but WF Hazelnuts & Cream combined with a little FA Hazel Grove could be really interesting. And will definitely be thinking about this when I try WF Roasted Hazelnut for the first time here in the next few days.

2 points

by Labubsover 5 years ago

FW Hazelnut quickly gained a top spot for me, it's such an excellent flavor, and surprisingly versatile...it can be straight up nutty as hell in the forefront or blended at smaller %s to boosts creams/milks...I use it in a lot, but I almost always have 240mls if this simple, sweet, nutty, very dessert-y RY4 on hand:

TFA Caramel (Original) - 1.75%

TFA Caramel Candy - 2.25%

FW Hazelnut - a 'heavy' 1.75%

TFA RY4 Double - 8%

TFA Sweet Cream - 3%

TFA Vanilla Swirl - 4%

It's basically the basic idea of RY4 (a smoky caramel vanilla with the slightest hint of tobacco) turned to 11. RY4D is a classic for a reason, and this is very much more a dessert than approaching any kind of tobacco, but the slight 'smokiness' and the addition of the Hazelnut note make it absolutely amazing. Steep time isn't so bad, you can honestly start vaping it almost immediately, 3 or 4 days or so, but you can also let it steep for a month or 3, it only gets richer and richer as it ages. Really excellent stuff...

Been experimenting a lot with Pistachio and Hazelnut etc lately, and I've been loving them...fingers really crossed on this one, as I have a use for every flavoring in the pack, and there's a few in there I've wanted to experiment with (Peanut Butter, Oak Barrel, Carrot, and Clove)...the spices look very interesting, have a couple spicy recipes that I've put together but haven't been able to experiment with because of the cycle of buying only 'for-sure' ADV flavors + a bit of nic when I'm able to put together an order, there's been no room for me to try the experimentation type flavors...

Edit- Bonus 2nd ADV recipe, I adapted this from somewhere on ELR, so the original concept isn't mine, but this makes an amazing, rich, almost buttery Butterscotch Ice Cream with Hazelnut Crumble.

Brown Sugar (TPA) - 0.70% (I use Brown Sugar Extra)

 Butterscotch Ripple (FW) - 2.50%

French Vanilla (CAP) - 1.50 (I usually use French Vanilla Creme)

Golden Butter (CAP) - 0.50% (This is the first secret ingredient, the velvety richness the Golden Butter imparts is incredible, almost movie theater butter, but it works incredibly well here)

Hazelnut (FW) - 3.00%

Sweet Cream (TPA)- 1.50%

Sweetener (Sucralose/Maltol) (TPA) - 0.50% (I use Ethyl Maltol/TFA Cotton Candy at a 'light' 0.5%)

Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (CAP) - 2.50% (the 2nd secret ingredient haha)

Like I said, I know it was originally adapted, but following the links back only brings me back to my first 60ml rendition...if the original author is on here, please comment so I can give you credit, this is one of my Top 5 favorite recipes of all time!

3 points

by ID10-Tover 5 years agoWinner: Best Recipe of 2019 - Counter Punch

Depends on what you want from a hazelnut and cream recipe. WF Hazelnuts & Cream is like vaping Hazelnut Vanilla Coffee Creamer. The hazelnut tastes fairly artificial but that coffee creamer proves that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it's just like the hazelnut in the coffee creamer. The cream is rich and vanilla with a light dairy note and it vapes smooth. It’s very sweet. Tastes like it’s just waiting for a little bit of a coffee flavor that isn’t gross (good luck with that!) or if you want to get a little more creative, some kind of bakery flavor, but it's going to be like a bakery made with coffee creamer. It’s a little cream heavy; you could add some more hazelnut and more realistic hazelnut with some added FA or FW Hazelnut.

Much like Highlander, there can only be one hazelnut, and that is FW Hazelnut. Wildly versatile and super tasty, it goes well with tobaccos for a slightly nutty undertone (great with FA Soho), and creams/milks for support. It's a must have at all times for me.

I hate to break it to you, but all of the hazelnut flavors I've tried are at least a little bit sweet. FA Hazel Grove might be your best bet, though.

Only have 5 hazelnut and only use 2....the other 3 are waiting to be tested but last week was too busy for me and I didn't get to them...will try them tonight along with the show. I love FW hazelnut, especially with coffee, ice cream or milkshake ( vta cafe latte with mb milkshake, TFA caramel original and fw hazelnut is yummy). WF hazelnut and cream is very good but I didn't used it that much in recipes so I'm not very familiar with it already....Cap hazelnut v2, fa hazelnut and WF roasted hazelnut are going to be tested tonight!

I love hazelnut. I've only used it in coffee and bakery vapes so far but think it would work well with an ice cream as u/ID10-T suggests below. Ice cream trinity with 1.5% FA Hazelnut and 3% WF Hazelnut and Cream perhaps? Yum...

I just got my MB Baylis. Mixed it up at 6.25% and it's not very good off the shake. I sure hope it improves with a steep!

The only hazelnut I have is FlavorWests. I use it mostly to add a nuttiness to my tobacco recipes.

Noted Ep. 149: HAZELNUT (ft. Forment_Life),

(Ranked by Foment from worst to first)

TFA Hazelnut DX: Very butiric. More of that bile taste you get after you vomit, rather than actual vomit. Strong and lingers. Tested at 2% 7.07

TFA Hazelnut has diketones and butiric acid. The DX version has had all the diketones removed and even more butiric added. So not surprising that butiric note, is so heavy.

Euro Flavors Roasted Hazelnut: Bog water filtered through a camp fire. The bulk of the flavour is the smell a stagnant pond has. With some vague sweetness and, because it's roasted, a burnt flavour on top of that. Tested at 2% and steeped for a week. 10.57

Euro Flavors Fresh Hazelnut: The same stagnant bog water and vague sweetness as EUR Roasted Hazelnut, but without the burnt note. Tested at 2% and steeped for a week. 11.59

HC (Health Cabin) Hazelnut: Like trying to eat a hazelnut with the plastic wrapper still on. Plastic, vinyl off note. 14.12

NF (Nature's Flavors) Hazelnut: Slightly burnt, not at all sweet. Bitter, over roasted nuts. 14.43

NV (Nic Vape) .....Hazelnut: Not very flavourful. A bit of an earthy, musty funkiness. Like an old nut. 15.35

TFA Hazelnut: Most forgettable flavour tried this week. It's not blatantly hazelnut, just vaguely nutty. ID10-T can taste a butiric note, but he's sensitive to it. Whereas Forment had to really search for it, but could taste it a little. 16.42

Want a hazelnut to taste either like something from Starbucks. That fake hazelnut nuttiness. Or an authentic, roasted hazelnut. Nice nuttiness, a little savoury, maybe a little bitterness, that fatty creaminess nuts have. Satisfying and rich.

Fairy's Finest..... Hazelnut: Indistinguishable vague nuttiness. Forgettable. 18.54

CAP Hazelnut V2: Very meh. ID10-T found it dry and harsh, although Forment didn't. 19.55

FLV Hazelnut: (Would be ranked lower) Very strong. At 0.25% ID10-T thought it tasted like gasoline smells with some raw hazelnut and may have needed dilution. Tried again at around 0.13%, was like green, unripe, nut skin. Still astringent. Hazelnut is recognisable, quite sweet. Thick and creamy feel. Going to be very difficult to work with as % is so unforgiving. There's other flavours that do that green, raw hazelnut better anyway. Tested at 0.13%, 0.25% 21.35

SC (FE) Hazelnut: (Would be ranked lower) Not exactly burnt, but extra, dark roasted. So dark it's reminiscent of a coffee. A little acrid and has burnt popcorn off note a lot of coffee have. Similar to the note in FA Dark Bean, but nowhere near as strong. Definitely nutty. Almost like a hazelnut flavoured FA Dark Bean. 24.42

MB Nut Hazelnut: Needed to be pushed up to 4% to get anything out of it. Very soft. Borders on creamy, but no dairy, more of fattiness nuts have. Very middle of the road. Tested up to 4% 26.05

Bickford Hazelnut: Has to push up to 3% to get anything from it. Like a the flavour of weak hazelnut coffee creamer. But without the texture. Not a lot of body. Would maybe work if the mix was already creamy and needed some fake hazelnut? But there's better options for that. Tested up to 3% 27.18

JF Hazelnut: Not a lot of flavour at 1.5%. At 2.5% a lot more present. More on the authentic side. It's just OK. But there's better options for a natural hazelnut. Tested at 1.5% and 2.5%. 28.34

HS Hazelnut Coffee: Pretty strong coffee with a roasted, nutty, hazelnut flavour. There's a little bit of creaminess, but it's coming from the nut. Rather than coffee with cream. Semi sweet. A little bit of a bitter edge to the coffee. Not nearly as much as some other coffees. Not a bad flavour, but not great either. 29.49

Sterling Clouds (Silver Clouds Estates)...Hazelnut? A competent nut flavour, but not strictly hazelnut. Nice nuttiness. lacking in presence and body. Would probably be best used to support another nut flavour, to add more nuttiness, rather than using as a primary note. Tested at 2% and 3% 31.40

OOO Hazelnut: Generic hazelnut coffee creamer. Definitely sweet and nutty. Recognisable as hazelnut, but could definitely do with being more hazelnutty. Almost a praline? 33.24

RF Hazelnut SC: A little astringent at 2%. Could be good used in a tobacco where that astringency wouldn't be offensive. It could be buried easily with a cream or caramel. Felt too dry to use as in a bakery. 34.21

RF being remade by Abortsford (?) in Canada.

TFA Hazelnut Praline: A store brand version of FA Soho. Vaguely sweet, kind of nutty. No tobacco note, so if you wanted Soho without any tobacco may be a better option? But unless you want to avoid the little amount of tobacco Soho has, probably best to just use Soho. 37.04

Tasty Puff Chocolate Hazelnut: Smells exactly like Nutella. Slightly over roasted hazelnut, similar touch of astringency that is in RF Hazelnut SC. Chocolate isn't as present as it should be. Ratio is off, Nutella is chocolate with a little hazelnut. This flavour is hazelnut with some chocolate. Could be a good starting point for a Nutella mix. Chocolate isn't Tootsie Roll. Could probably get away with usinguse if Nutella wasn't the main part of the profile. 38.05

FW Nutella Type: Really dark and gunky concentrate. But doesn't have sugar in it, like some other FW. Tastes petty good, but in a similar way to Tasty Puffs the chocolate to hazelnut ratio is backwards. Mostly hazelnut with cocoa note in the background. It's not hugely artificial, like Tootsie Roll. It's not a bad chocolate note, just fairly light. The hazelnut is pretty good. But overall it's not very thick, or creamy and not sweet enough. Needs some cream, something to sweeten it. But not just sweetener, needs to be within the mix. Maybe TFA Dulce de Leche would work to sweeten and darken it? Also would need to add to the chocolate note. If making something where Nutella was a smaller element, like a cupcake with Nutella frosting, may be able to get away with just using FW Nutella Type. 39.27

FW Creamy Hazelnut: Hazelnut coffee creamer. Hazelnut is artificial, very specifically hazelnut coffee creamer type hazelnut. Rich, sweet. Full bodied. Slightly dry, not offensively so. Oddly, not as creamy as FW Hazelnut, but FW Creamy Hazelnut sells the coffee creamer aspect better. More artificial tasting. Tested at 4%. 42.43

Tasty Puff House of Hazelnut: Reminiscent of FW Hazelnut, but not as rich or creamy. Lacks some body, but the flavour is really good. Could be used to support another hazelnut to bump up the hazelnut-ness. 44.44

WF Roasted Hazelnut: Nice roasted note. No burnt or coffee note. Natural, authentic hazelnut. Unlike WF Hazelnuts and Cream, which is blatantly artificial. Rich, creamy body. Has buttery, fatty note that hazelnuts have. A little too sweet for a natural hazelnut. But probably wouldn't be an issue in a mix if adding to other sweet ingredients. Could probably use just for the roasted note, even in a mix that isn't particularly nutty. Just Use the richness and roasted-ness, without too much hazelnut flavour. 46.10

WF Hazelnuts and Cream: Fairly light, not an SC flavour. Similar to FW Creamy Hazelnut, but better. Very creamy, more so than FW Creamy Hazelnut. Some vanilla. Hazelnut coffee creamer, like something from Starbucks. Artificial hazelnut. Creamy and rich. Light dairy notes. Very smooth and very sweet. Would be great with a nice coffee flavour. ID10-T would use this instead of FW Creamy Hazelnut in any application. Can vape as a SF if you want hazelnut coffee creamer. Tested at 7.5%. Use around 7.5%-8% as a SF. 47.52

Maybe try mixing with WF Caramel Cappuccino and a touch of a stronger coffee to make a Starbucks style drink?

FW Hazelnut: Very versatile. Can use in a tobacco. Around 1% does amazing things to strawberries, makes them more ripe, more realistic. Can add around 0.5%-1% to creams to give them a lovely malty note. Or to make a milkshake. Works great with TFA Peanut Butter DX to help really sell peanut butter. It's kind of the nut version of TFA Vanilla Swirl. Kind of like a hazelnut spread or hazelnut butter. Very creamy rich, smooth and thick. More creamy than FW Creamy Hazelnut. Dry enough for use as a nut. But not really dry. Forgiving. But at the same time as little as 0.5% can make a difference in a mix. Use around 0.5%-1% as an additive. 51.01

FA Hazel Grove (Hazelnut): Authentic, natural hazelnut. Very realistic. Not very sweet. At 1% slightly roasted, but not burnt. A little thin and a bit too heavy, but has some nut flesh type body. Around 0.5% could add some nice nuttiness to a tobacco. Would be a better option to FW Hazelnut if you didn't want the sweetness or creaminess. Especially if looking for more natural realism. WF Roasted Hazelnut is also realistic, but may be too sweet? Works great at 0.5% to boost something like a banana nut bread. 1% is good. At 1.25% starts to get a green, nut skin note. 54.10

ID10-T's recommendations: WF Hazelnuts and Cream - for coffee creamer FA Hazel Grove - most realistic, natural hazelnut WF Roasted Hazelnut - nice roasted note, rich body FW Hazelnut - mandatory to have! Versatile

Do we have an acceptable bread down?

PB I'm confident we can work out if it hasn't been managed.

I swear to you CAP concord grape w/ stevia is gonna be the key to getting the grape jam right.

I currently have TFA Dx Peanut butter, FLV Peanut butter, and TFA AP 5%. Unfortunately I haven't gotten around to using any of them, but have a few recipes bookmarked to try. I do have FW Hazelnut in my cart for my next order though
