Well this is a bittersweet moment for me.
On the positive side, I haven't vaped for over 2 months now, thus signalling an end to the addiction that began when I picked up that first cigarette over three decades ago. However, it also means that I'm going to be giving up any pretense of being an active part of this community that has meant so much to me since I started vaping.
When I joined the mod team here, we were a pretty small community with a very niche hobby. Not many people back then had never even heard of "vaping" and those that did vape didn't realize how easy it was to make their own supplies. Information was very limited and we all spent countless hours assembling FAQs and Wikis, vendor lists, recipe threads, contests, you name it. Now there are over 50,000 members here and I'm proud to say I was able to participate in some of that growth. Of course, it is the active userbase that makes this a vibrant community, not a few mods. I'm grateful to all of you and to the friendships that I've developed here.
I've asked the other mods if they remind me remaining on the mod list with a "retired" tag, and they've graciously agreed to do that.
That said, I'd be happy to answer any questions that you might have about my vaping journey, my time here as a member and/or mod, or anything else. I can't be at the keyboard all day today so it's not a true AMA, but I'll respond as soon as I can.
Finally - one last thank you to all of you for making this subreddit the most fun and welcoming place on the internet I've ever had the pleasure to be a part of.
Retired flair is yours now.
Congrats on reaching what should be the logical conclusion for us all, though I doubt I'll ever reach it. And thank you for all your hard work in years past, building this community. And in more recent years, for times for the times when you've swooped in to be the level-headed voice of reason when one was sorely needed.
Congratulations on both your vaping retirement as well as your mod retirement.
It was a blast getting to know you over the years as this sub came into it's own.
Thanks to you too, Botboy... IMO you are the finest mixer this sub ever knew. Your Apple Pie is an absolutely perfect recipe. I miss our frequent interaction here.
You will be sorely missed! Thank you for all that you have done over the last several years toward making this sub as great as it is. I look forward to joining you in quitting altogether one day, just not today:)
Good luck on your future endeavors Kirk!
Have you ever had TFA Honey, the best flavor ever?
Yep, it was in my first order!
Skiddz vaping a whole bottle of that is easily in the top 3 moments in this sub. Still gives me a chuckle.
Special thanks to you , Ed, for all your efforts here.
How was the ease and steps of easing off nic? Just curious. Congratulations man!
I've gone zero-nic a few times over the years; I usually bring it back into the vape after a few weeks because I liked the gentle pick-me-up.
The easiest way is to just gradually taper it off, and tbh you will barely notice it's getting fainter. Say 3 to 2 to 1 then 0.5. Once you are low enough, just top off with zero-nic when you fill and I would venture to guess that most can get nic free in about a week or two.
I was looking to change jobs last summer, and many employers are now doing a nicotine test before hiring. That was my impetus to drop the nic then, and I never added it back in. It was nice not to have to be craving the vape every couple of hours, yet I could still puff away in the evening. Then a couple months ago I was headed out of town and couldn't find my favorite rig. I thought about quitting that day, then found the rig right before leaning, and throughout the day whenever I felt the urge to vape, I decided to put it off for 15 more minutes. Went all day without a vape, and never vaped once after that.
Best of luck to all who want to quit. Vaping (especially DIY) makes it so much easier than any of the dozens of ways I ever tried to quit smoking.
What job test for nicotine? Never even heard of that!
I live near Cleveland, and all of the Cleveland Clinic hospitals won't hire nicotine users. Lincoln Electric is one of the best employers in the area - same deal. The first one I encountered was a dorky little medical-claims processor for a job that I was over-qualified for, but that was the one that made me drop the nic.
I'm not OP but I just wanna mention I went from 1.5 to 0 a few months ago and genuinely didn't notice a difference at all. That is, until recently, I've started to realize that I'm charging my batteries about 1/2 as much as I used to (because I'm only using my vape 1/2 as much), I'm genuinely just forgetting my vape when I go to another room and I don't realize it for an hour or so, shit like that.
I'd honestly highly recommend trying it if you're on a super low nic level, I'm really glad I did... Before, I didn't know how I could possibly quit, but now it's a very, very clear path that won't be hard to achieve at all. The only hurdle for me is being ingrained into the community, and it's inspiring to see that that ultimately wasn't an issue for /u/kirkt
Gonna miss you, buddy! I hope you know you've helped a TON of people throughout the years, myself included. Congrats on reaching the goal! All the best wishes, my dude <3
I'm kinda new to the sub but I've been a long time lurker since I've always wanted to get into mixing. But i can never give myself the push to buy everything also since ive never had person mixed juice. So to me im more worried about the taste (i know compnys mix thier juices but I'm talking you could say "home made") so my question must be what actually gave you the push to start mixing? I hope one day i can get that push to start because i enjoy vaping for the technicalities and the community also flavors. But i gotta wait until i figure out everything i need mostly by reading this sub and the cost is another factor.
> what actually gave you the push to start mixing?
A few things really.

I'm a DIY guy for just about everything. I'm in the middle of installing a new Pergo floor in my family room. I change my cars' oil & brakes. I've built a great deal of furniture around this house. I cook a restaurant-quality meal at least once a week. If I can do it, chances are I will try.
-
I'm generally very frugal (some say cheapskate, but I won't argue). Juice was expensive back in the day; $.50/ml was a good price. Although if I look back at the (literal) thousands of dollars I've spent on supplies over the years, I'm not certain if I actually saved anything in the long run.

I love to customize. Juice too sweet? Needs a little cream flavor? Easy to fix.
Thanks for the reply. I'd have to say I'm the same way with all that customization and such. I love building stuff (wood working) and i love trying new builds in my RTA's and RDA's. Just trying new things in general i guess ill have too look into it more thanks again!
Thanks for everything and congrats!
Damn, kirk. I remember hopping on the mod team when there were less than 12k subs here, and you were already a staple on the team. It's been an absolute pleasure getting to know you here, and gaining a new IRL friend some 5 years ago. o7
What was the last juice you vaped? And do you remember the first juice you made? And was quitting intentional, or did you just sorta drift into it?
I vaped unflavored for the last few months. That also helped with the quitting.
First one I mixed. Hmm. Ah yes, tried to recreate Mt. Baker's cinnamon roll. Found the contents of my first order:
Absinthe TFA
Blueberry TFA
Cinnamon Danish TFA
Ecto Cooler FW
Gingerbread Cookie TFA
Honey TFA
Tobacco TFA
Tobacco Desert Ship FA
Amazing to look back on now. The absinthe never made it into a vapeable recipe; I got 2 tobacco flavors and probably never vaped a tobacco-based flavor again, and there it is: TFA Honey.
As for quitting, see my reply to /u/Roxakin.
FA desert ship used to be my jam! Well, that, plus 5 other tobaccos and a splash of banana cream. I learned the hard way that you HAVE TO STEEP your tobaccos before you can taste test. I ended up putting like 10% Fa shade in a test bottle first time I mixed tobaccos because it had no flavor. Two weeks later, it was unbearably strong.
First of all, thank you. If i haven't 'seen' you active, I've definitely read through the archived posts and seen your posts from when when the sub seemed 'smaller'.
(1) How has the sub changed since you started becoming involved in it?
(2) What's the best way (or some of the best ways) a (relative) newcomer to contribute and help?
(3) Favorite guilty pleasure flavor?

In the early years, everyone was terrified of screwing up somehow. IIRC my first post here was asking how worried I should be if I spilled some nic on my skin. We had lots (LOTS) of the same posts, over and over, which led to some pretty draconian rules such as temporary bans for not reading the sidebar before asking a question for the 1000th time. When Skiddz came on board, he was instrumental in relaxing the rules and letting the community police itself better. I was opposed to the change at first, but in the end it made this a much friendlier sub and I'm glad I was wrong.

For a newcomer, the first step remains: read the sidebar and the wiki. There's so much wisdom there from so many skilled mixers. Once you are up & mixing, participate in the weekly threads. There's a lot of new users with many questions, and if you know the answer be the one to reply. A sub this large relies on active participation by a decent percentage of its users to function.
Another suggestion: When you mix, experiment and refine, then post your best creations. After we learn the basics, most people are just here for some good recipe ideas. Don't be afraid to be creative. Grack Juice is a bizarre concept that was chosen as best recipe of the year, and IMO it won that award mostly for being so different.
- Nothing guilty about vaping. It's so much better than smoking in every aspect.
If I have any regrets it's that it took me too long to get on the diacetyl bandwagon. I believed the early "popcorn lung" stories and spent months warning every poster who was using custards. Once I got my head out of my rectum I became a huge fan of them.
So no 'guilty pleasures', but my two favorite recipes of all time are Short Fort by /u/billgarmsarmy and /u/Botboy141's Apple Pie. If those two want to post those recipes here I'll let them get the karma they deserve.
It's funny because I literally made Awesome Apple Pie earlier this week.
Here's Short Fort:
Ingredient|% :---|---: Acetyl Pyrazine 5% (TPA)|1.50 Brown Sugar (TPA)|3.00 Coconut Extra (TPA)|1.50 Kentucky Bourbon (TPA)|2.50 Toasted Almond (CAP)|1.50 Vanilla Bourbon (Vaniglia) (FA)|0.70 Vanilla Swirl (TPA)|1.40
Flavor total: 12.1%

>Staying away from diketones is a very good idea actually , acting like they're perfectly safe is just a very stupid thing to say and it's irresponsible .
>
>
>
>When people say " You never hear anybody being diagnosed with Popcorn lung so nothing to worry about" there's a very good reason for that , it's because medical professionals never refer to it as Popcorn lung .
>
>The effects of long time diketone use are always categorized and linked to COPD NEVER popcorn lung.
>
>Diketones permanently scar lung tissue and it's irreversible , i learned that on this very site years ago and in the deeper DIY forum . That doesn't mean you're guaranteed to get ill from it or lung scarring will decrease your lifespan but it's something that many want to avoid for their own reasons.

>Didn't mean to spoil your retirement but couldn't leave " I should have got on the diketone bandwagon earlier" is just an extremely ill advised comment.

A klingon roars when his comrade passes to let the heavens know that a warrior is on his way......the heavens should prepare.
Congrats! I'm on my way getting my boyfriend to the same goal right now. Do you plan on selling any of the gear that you are leaving behind?
I will probably get rid of 90% of it after I mix a few large batches for others. Not selling since most of it is open. I will probably save my nic which is stored in the deep freeze in case it ever gets outlawed. For the rest, I have some mixing friends that might get very lucky in the near future.
So happy to have gotten to talk to you a few times over the years. Congratulations on hitting that end-goal. Good luck moving forward, and I hope to see you pop in from time to time still, even if just to say hello. Thank you so much for everything you've done to help build this community. Cheers, brother.
Congrats on actually completing the journey. I think most ppl start vaping as a way to get off combustible tobacco but then find it to be such a fun hobby with so many different ventures to get involved in(Diy mixing, coil building, box modding)!that they forget the reason they started in the first place.. to quit! You didn’t give up and did it! Congrats on that accomplishment man. It gives me hope that one day I can be completely free of nicotine but still stay involved in this awesome community. Congrats again. Enjoy this whole new world ahead of you with both hands free for once.
Thanks. I enjoyed vaping much more than smoking (and TBH I loved smoking, at least for a while). There was a long period where I never wanted or expected to give up vaping.
I think that’s where I’m at now. I enjoy it so much and it has done wonders in keeping me busy during my early recovery and even now at 4yrs clean Just making some juice or spinning some alien coils up can completely change my mood and calm my mind down. I’m just scared if I quit vaping what then? Thank you keeping the hope alive that it’s possible to be free one day.
