Preparing to step into DYI (in response to NY upcoming regulation effective dates)
submitted over 5 years ago by sidiousrmp

So I've been starting my research into DYI In preparation of dealing with NY's new flavor ban. In a few minutes I've already learned alot from this sub. My real question is:

Will have trouble getting the liquid nicotine, and replacement coils in NY after July? Will I need to learn how to build coils?

I think the prevailing advice is to get your liquid nicotine now. Get the highest concentration you can find. Get a bunch of amber/brown glass bottles to store in smaller quantities. Put that in the freezer.

For your atty/atties, I’d recommend ditching anything that take proprietary coil heads (like subohm tanks) and switch to rebuildables. You don’t have to learn how to ‘build’ coils, but you’ll probably want to learn how to wrap them from spools.

Solid advice.

You'll definitely still be able to buy pre-built coils if you don't want to get into building coils. But look at some YouTube videos and practice wicking them, takes a bit of practice but it's easy once you get the hang of it.

Yeah don't see much problem with non-proprietary coil availability; even though Amazon banned all vape accessories there's still tons of prebuilt coils and wire on there, usually being advertised as radio accessories/hobbiest parts (since they're literally just wire and you can't ban that, but we know what they're mainly used for).

Still, I agree that learning to wrap your own coils with a spool is super easy, so I recommend anyone who's worried give it a try anyway since it's good to know. Also incredibly cheap, you can get a huge spool of wire and a basic coil jig for about $10 total and have enough material to make DIY coils for several years.

Wait - I thought no issues with buying devices and accessories online. Thought the ban was only on juice?

I’ll let someone more familiar with the actual restrictions/regulations weigh in.

The advice about attys is more general rather than specific to the PMTA deadline. OEMs make new tanks all the time. Coil heads may change and they’ll stop production of the old ones. So you may have to buy a new tank to be able to use the new coil heads. Or if you stock up on coil heads and your tank has a problem you’re stuck with unusable coil heads and you’ll have to buy a new tank.

I just bought a 1L of 100mg nic myself. Trying to stock up as much as I can now. Flavoring will always be available but nic might get harder if the federal nicotine tax passes.

As for coils, get a good RDA and some wire or buy your coils like alien coils from a builder. I always buy mine here

Would these coils work in this? I'm 100% beginner on this so bear with me. https://www.elementvape.com/smok-tf-rdta-s2-deck-two-post

Personally I wouldn't recommend an rdta; having a tank is appealing but has tons of drawbacks of you're looking into the long run. You'll have to replace that glass when it breaks, which can be difficult since every few months new models come out so old accessories get sold out, then you have a useless rdta cause no glass fits it. Also, I'm not sure about that rdta but most have very tiny versions of real rda build decks so prebuilt coils often don't fit (sometimes you need thinner wire and you need to coil the wire yourself to get it to fit).

A basic RDA (you can get a good one for $5-10 on sale, I got the Hellvape Passage for $5 recently) can last you many many years and is much easier to install coils on. If you're looking for more portability look into Squonk boxes, which allow you to keep tons of juice in your device the way a tank does, but without glass and works on almost any new RDA (just needs to come with a Squonk pin).

Very true. As an owner of countless RTAs and RDTAs I can't tell you how hard it is to get O rings for them, nonetheless glass when they break or get lost. That's why I went back to RDAs totally.

New to rebuildables, right now I use a smoke x priv that I love but sounds like it's time for.me to step it up.

I would recommend you pick up an rda starting out and drip on that you can buy pre wrapped coils from user on here like u/badazd, advanced vapor supply (Sale right now is spring35 for 35% discount) or wire optim , the most cost effective would be to make yourself like diy ejuice it has a upfront cost and a bit of learning curve but once you get it your good ... if you learn yourself you can just purchase wire which wont ever be banned because of its use in a whole variety of industries. You can purchase a bundle variety pack from kbee vapes. another thing that can help you build coils is the Daedalus coil making kit (if you have your own drill you can buy the kit without the drill) which claptons for you but you'll still need a basic understanding of ohms law and need to know how to wrap. If you want to get into building these are the videos I watched Battery Mooch for basic Ohms Law Understanding , Sherlock Ohms Beginner tutorial , The Art of Vaping

Edit: love from long isla

I'm not familiar with that specific rdta and how much airflow it has but since that is a rdta I wouldn't get coils with too low of a build like .11 dual. The fused claptons would work well in it being at .3 ohms dual.

Personally I use rdas. I love my single coil rdas for great flavor. I use my Recurve rda with a .2 alien coil and the flavor is great imo. You just have to be willing to drip into it or purchase a squonk mod to go with it.

That's a lot of very specific detail that I don't understand yet. Keyword yet.

Don't rely on that every time I've used a smok rba it wigs out and won't read correctly. Def get a good rda, I love the Wotofo recurve dual but the "drop" (dead rabbit) style decks look great for beginners as well

Just go to DIYorDIE on YouTube, EVERYTHING you need to know is there, don’t listen to just anyone on this topic, like Homie that told you to buy glass and put your nic in the freezer, just dumb...go see WAYNE! #DIYorDie

I've read this method a lot of places what's wrong with freezing your nic and pulling it out in small quantities? Makes sense to me...

So under the current regulation bill that states “Online sales of any e-liquids–regardless of flavor–are banned (vapor products are folded into the same provision that bans shipment of cigarettes to consumers). This does not include components or devices. The penalty for selling or shipping a vapor product to a consumer in NY is a Class A misdemeanor and carries a fine of $5000 or $100 per vapor product.”

Free base nic and premixed unflsvored nic falls under this category or is there some sort of leeway?

Fellow NY’er here

Also possible to store it in a basement perhaps? As buying in bulk wont fit my freezer lol

From what I read, even getting hardware will be difficult. I bought some DIY stuff, and made my first 2 batches, and honestly came out pretty decent. I have rebuildable coils on the way.

I dont believe hardware and devices are affected just solely juice. Kinda uncertain how to proceed further tbh.
