I hate cactus, can i mix up the same recipes and leave it out? Grack juice for example
submitted over 5 years ago by TheFriendlyCactus1

Seems like most delicious fruity recipes call for cactus, but i can't stand it, even one drop in 8ml completely ruins all recipes for me.
Using grack juice as an example (because i love how it smells, i really want to like it), would it be good without cactus? I feel like cactus serves a specific purpose in a lot of recipes and im worried taking it all the way out will ruin them.
Any good fruity recipes without cactus?

Cactus is mainly used as just an additive to juice up fruit recipes. Except in Grack. It's vital in Grack, hombre

What's with your handle? I mean, it's a bit contradictory, right?

Ive loved cactus (the plants) for years and my handle is totally unrelated to vaping... it's just a sad irony

Thanks for stopping by! I love the smell of grack juice, I want to love it so bad! It tastes nothing like it smells to me and all other recipes with cactus have the same flavor. Grack Juice is my buddy's ADV and he's the one that convinced me to do DIY right from the start of vaping

You got a lot of good advice in this thread. Picking some recipes that use Cactus at <0.5% and subbing for something like Cap Cucumber or FA Pear is a good place to start. Some flavor profiles just aren't for everyone :)

FA Pear. This flavor right here is a life saver. I use pear before I ever use cactus specifically because of this problem. And boy is it some good shit

You could try Grack 2.0, good luck tasting the cactus over that pungent Boysenberry.

by TheFriendlyCactus1over 5 years ago

I forgot that grack juice was made specifically as a recipe that's heavy on cactus and still tasty, and as such is a bad example for my post, but a ton of recipes like Bare necessities, Rainforest, apple raspberry spritzer all have the same bad taste I don't like

Could use some pear for moistness, sort of works but not the same

Also, tf is you name cactus if you dislike cactus 🤔

It's painfully ironic...i was really excited to try some delicious cactus recipes due to my affinity for cactus.

by kontraventionover 5 years ago

(Having never used it myself) For the most part it shows up at a low percentage in recipes to add a wet or juicy factor to the mix. You can also use FA Pear to accomplish this, in low percentages as well. You can absolutely make a mix without it but it will alter the recipe a bit, in either wetness (low percentage) or flavor (tad higher percentage).

For me it imparts a weird floral/plant-y taste that totally takes over

3 points

by marshwizardover 5 years ago

Yeah, same here. Taste's like how I imagine taking a big bite of an Aloe Vera would taste. I find it does fade after a few days though while keeping the "juiciness" intact. INW Prickly Pear apparently adds the same juicyness but with more of a melon flavour though I've yet to try it.

Same. Just tastes like chlorophyll to me. Like vaping grass or something. Was very disappointed with cactus.

by rapemybonesover 5 years agoFrugivore

Yeah I can't stand the stuff at even 0.5%, it just seems to overtake all the other flavors no matter how little I add so all I taste is aloe or grass, and the flavor just stays in my mouth and on my coils for ages. Can't imagine using >2% of it, so I doubt I'll ever be mixing grack.

3 points

by TheFriendlyCactus1over 5 years ago

Do you have any fruity recipes that don't use it?

3 points

by kontraventionover 5 years ago

Yeah the aloe effect that some people taste is what is keeping me from buying it. Do you have your flavor stash posted anywhere? We can take a look at what you have and possibly suggest something.

Instead of cactus try a cucumber its a less harsh nasty taste cucumber seems to be more watery. But anything that uses cactus i use cap dragonfruit in its place and i find recipes come out better.

All CAP, exact percentage for subohm unknown as I use this for pods.

Sweet Mango, Golden Pineapple, Juicy Peach in a 3:2:1 ratio.

I never knew they had one. I just saw a cactus cupcake by Molinberry though.

There are fruit recipes that use cactus for wetness, and those that use it for cactus. Grack and GIGI are cactus-centric. A bunch of good cactus-centric recipes are possible. However, if you can't stand cactus, you should look for recipes that use it for wetness only, so if cactus is used over .25%, skip the recipe. Otherwise, try substituting with twice as much FA Pear. As for great fruit recipes without cactus... Mr Freeze Purple. Purple Lemonade. Apple Blossom. There's plenty of choices, those are just the first that come to mind.

I've found some recipes on ELR called grapple, beyond grapple and something similar. They have similar ingredients as grack without cactus and koolada. I don't remember which ones i liked the best, been ages since I mixed them but i quite liked some of them. Maybe that's a good starting point for you

1 points

by TheFriendlyCactus1over 5 years ago

Beyond grapple looks delicious, I don't have grape juice but I have INW grape I might try it with that

You can try and experiment however you choose to do, that’s what make DIY fun. But once you omit or use a different flavor (be it same flavor from different vendor), you’re no longer mixing „Grack Juice“, for instance. All flavorings play a specific role in a mix.

You can search ATF and ELR for fruity recipes as well as this Subreddit. Links are posted in the sidebar. And if you have your flavor stash uploaded to ATF or ELR, you can search “What can I make?“, which gives you recipes from the database that fit your flavor stash.

Depending on what Cactus is being used for in the recipe, I'd try Flavorah Watermelon or Lychee. They're both really subtle flavors that don't interfere with other fruits, but give you the juicy mouth feel that most people are aiming for with Cactus. To me, the Watermelon is almost flavorless with a juicy aftertaste, while the Lychee is more of a juicy top note. Your taste buds may vary.

3 points

by TheFriendlyCactus1over 5 years ago

Thanks for the tip! I have lychee so I'll definitely try that, haven't done a lot of tweaking of recipes yet cuz it's super demoralizing to clean out an atomizer and get it rewicked just to hate the juice I've mixed, for the tenth time

by jllclaireover 5 years ago

Get yourself a bunch of cheap clearos, you can use them just for flavor testing.

u/jllclaire what percentage do you use FLV watermelon/lychee to add juicy? 😇

It won't cost you much to experiment with various substitutions. Mix up a batch with everything but the Cactus, shake well and divide into 10ml taste samples. Possible substitutes for Cactus include FA Pear, TFA Quince, or a combination thereof.

I always go with fa pear

I fill your pain. I seen inw cactus in so many fruit mixes and thought i was missing out and come to find out that stuff is only for the initiated. I think its over hyped just like fw yellow cake.

I thought so, seems like Cactus is an essential flavor

1 points

by corsaircultover 5 years ago

Lol in all honesty tho I just made some flavors with cactus and I can't really taste it from the shake and vape. Then again I use koolada and strong fruits so it deff over powers

Look for their cactus lime flavor maybe? It's less aloe than the normal cactus flavor

Yes, I'm the same with WF Starfruit, FLV Pink Guava and INW Cactus.

Yes

fw blueberry 3% TFA dragon fruit 3% Cap sweet strawberry 2% TPA whipped cream 1% Flavorah boysenberry .5% Inawera cactus .5%

Optional .5% super sweet I do like adding this but I also like very sweet fruity flavours

Let me know what you think! Would love some tweaks suggestions, comments

Dragonfruit there for the strawberry?

FLV Jammy Berry, CAP Blueberry Jam, and VT Blueberry Jam come to mind. Outside of blueberries I'm really looking forward to playing with VT Jam It

by xizlaarover 5 years ago

I dunno if I didn't get a long enough steep time in, but the jams didn't sit so well for me. I just couldn't seem to find the right mix with everything else I had. Haven't tried the by jam it... it sounds awesome i wish my supplier would get it!
