Does anyone else have periods where your mixes just aren’t working out right? Or you just feel a bit meh about everything you make?
Everything just tastes flat and boring but I don’t know why. I don’t know if it’s my tasters that aren’t working properly, or if my tastes have changed, or if it’s some sort of vapers tongue thing? Or if it’s really just what I’m making isn’t good?
Even recipes I usually really like aren’t tasting that great. But it’s not like I can’t taste them, they’re just really flat. I’ve been doing single flavour tests and I can taste them fine. So I don’t know?
I’ve started drinking a ton of water today as I thought it could simply be dehydration.
Anyone got any suggestions or had a similar experience?
First sign of Corona, loss of taste and smell. Just sayin....
Indeed... Not a joke. How long has it been going on for?
It’s not been that long, maybe a bit less than a week. It’s not loss of taste. Just everything being a bit flat. It seems to have subsided somewhat today. I think it was probably dehydration and maybe frustration from being stuck inside for ages.
Fingers crossed I don’t have corona though.
Can you taste anything at all? Is it just e liquid giving you the problem? If so then it's probably vapers tongue, switch to plain vg for a day or two, give your teeth a real good clean & stay hydrated, it'll pass mate
I can taste fine- I’ve been doing single flavour tests, so trying to pick out the notes etc. and I can still do that. But it’s just like everything tastes like it is does usually but with a film of dullness and flatness covering it- if that makes sense. It’s not like I’m bored of mixing. Oddly when I’m vaping single flavours it isn’t quite so bad, they’re not quite as flat.
At the moment I’m taking it as an opportunity to test some of the many flavours I’ve yet to do. But it’s still frustrating.
I just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same thing. I’m really hoping it’s dehydration cos that’s pretty straight forward to fix.
Dehydration could be the culprit, have you tried changing your atty? Rebuilding, changing coil etc?
I use various different attys and it’s all the same. But i will put new coils in. I hadn’t thought of that. I’ve been vaping some heavy tobaccos recently so might need changing. I could dig out a different RDA to the couple I usually use as well. That might help. Thanks
Here I thought it was the simple mixes or too many recipes using the same flavors :) Even though I've been developing a bunch of new recipes recently, many are variations on a theme: hence, I go through the same thing you describe. I can taste my mixes, but they are just meh. That may also be why any new single flavor testers taste better (something new you're not used to). Maybe we need to try radical new flavors?
No advice, but you're not alone. Every single DIY juice I make tastes good only on a brand new coil and only for like 2-3 refills then I lose all taste of it. Maybe I just need commercial sweetener, but not sure how to make that happen. And to make things a little shittier, strawberry flavors don't jump out to me. I become de-sensitized to them after a tank. So many recommended DIY recipes include some sort of strawberry.
Commercial sweetener is just more sweetener! They use the same ones we do. Maybe you’re a bit of a strawberry non taster?
So would that be something like Super Sweet? Everything I read says only use a few drops per 100 mls or else risk gunning your coils. I long moved away from the DIY coils and run a double kanthal mesh for my Mesh Pro. The commercial juice I have bought in the past doesn't seem to burn through my coils that quickly, and tastes so much richer and deeper. I just wish I could make a juice that has that deep, rich, dense flavor. It's been the one thing preventing me from really accepting DIY juice. Then, when I think it's just me, I see so many opinions from people that commercial juice is too strong in the flavor department. And then i wonder, are people saying this because they really prefer less flavor, or are they sort of talking themselves into liking DIY better.
Ultimately for me, diy is about control and self-sufficiency with rebuildables and liquids rather than being at the mercy of commercial eliquids and coil heads. A prime example of this is currently a lot of folks are having a rough go at finding their coil heads or being able to obtain their e-liquids due to societal shut down and or government interference.
"Premium" liquids do use a ton of sweetness and high percentages for their recipes. If you've seen a commercial recipe release ever, their flavorings are usually in the 20% range on average. It takes a little bit to break your olfactory from that onslaught of saturation.
Perhaps what you are missing is sweetener. I mix mainly fruits and fruits with creams and use super sweet sometimes from .5-.75%. No shame in that.
I feel that. I've become numb to anything blue flavored (blue raspberry, blueberry, etc.) It sucks but I can usually vape straight menthol and bring back some flavor minus the blues. Found an older bottle of Just Blues by Alt Zero in my room and lemme tell you I could taste it just fine for about one tanks full then it was just blueberry and at a half a bottle I couldn't taste anything it just tasted like coil and cotton (even after a rewick) tasted like nothing
This is why you give away a few bottles to your friends and ask for thier opinion... worst case, they dont like it and give it to someone else... you never know, the peach cobbler that you thought tasted like a soggy grahm cracker could turn into someone elses saving vape of a last bottle to get them to payday.
I can understand how you feel ..I can't get creams or vanilla's to taste right. They always taste harsh or burnt or like nothing! (it's not nicotine tasting burnt as they are nic free testers) I don't hate cream either! I am trying desperately to figure out cream cause I loved the cream ecblends made me previously. And I love the vuse cream. Vuse cream got me into vaping, and the pending regulations got me into diy ejuice. I went from halo cigalikes to a full mod and rtas very quickly. Ive been entirely cig free for a week+ now. And 50/50 cig/vape for 3-4 months now. I'm proud of myself but angry at my flavor progress. ... I've been doing diy for two+ months now... And I am seriously frusterated about it! I just want a nice fresh cream like ecblends fresh cream + dragon cream :( or a tropical like my fav juice.
I wish I knew what I was doing wrong. Or what I'm missing..id buy it in a heart beat if I could replicate it..I have gotten so many different creams and vanilla's and it just seems like every attempt tastes like ass. :(
Good news is Im doing okay with tropical flavors as I work towards my quest on cloning my adv which is a tropical menthol flavor. But I wish I had someone else to collab with for it. Cause it's difficult to do alone and I'm so disenchanted.. I have so many flavors in my stash now...and I'm struggling to clone it! I know it's a trial and error process. But I guess I picked a very niche juice to clone :( I can feel I'm so close too so close. What angers me the most is the original juice smells like something fruity I've smelled before, or tastes in real life! And I can't figure it out! X.X the monthly clone posts haven't prospered at all so I'm all alone on this. :( So I get how frusterated you must feel.
Congratulations on fully quitting smoking! What is the name of the juice you’re trying to clone? Have you tried getting advice on the DIY_ejuice discord?
Regarding creams: Have you tried FLV Cream at 1% in a mix with some regular percentage of a fruit? That stuff just -works- as cream for me.
I have not tried that. I dont have that flavor. I will probably get it later on though. Heres the creams or cream like (ice cream) I have. I know some are off brands, but I saw some of them super cheap 70c-1$ and I grabbed them up so maybe half these just suck? I've been mixing at whatever was recommended on ELR when I make a recipe. So usually its about 1-2%
My list of creams/vanilla: Whipped cream TFA Bavarian cream FA Cream (flavor revolution) Cream (hangsen) Sweet cream TFA Fresh cream FA Sweet cream (Flavor revolution) Vanilla bean ice cream (cap) Vanilla buttercream frosting (VTA) Vanilla cream (flavor revolution) Vanilla cream (inawera) Vanilla ice cream (FA) Vanilla whipped cream (cap) Vanilla swirl (TFA) Vanilla blast (flavor revolution) Vanilla (euro flavor) Also have vanillin 10% in pg
Most recent cream/vanilla like thing I tried was this: Super Sweet .50 Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (CAP) 2% Vanilla Cream (INAWERA) 1.15%
Granted it may get better, this one hasn't steeped very long yet, just a few days...But I'm disheartened cause even ones I've let steep for a couple weeks just taste, harsh.
That’s really strange that you find creams harsh. That’s what a lot of people use to take the harshness out of other flavours. Do you find anything else harsh?
Have you watched Noted? I’ve linked all the cream episodes I could find. It might help you discover some new really good Cream flavours and give you some info in what they taste like, how you might use them etc. I’ve written some notes on most of these episodes and some others if you would find that useful. I’m in the process of uploading them to Reddit- I’m going to really try to do it this week. When Ive sorted it I’ll put a post up on the DIY_ejuice front page (if that’s the right term) with the link.

Hmm. What happens if you test something really simple, say 10mls of 2% TFA Vanilla Swirl, 2% INW Strawberry Shisha (or other berry you like) at 30/70, zero nicotine? That should be ready a few hours after the bubbles settle from the shake.
This shouldn't be harsh (depending on the fruit).
If that works, try adding 1% of creams x, y, and z to different little 10 ml experiments and test at one day and 10 days. Hopefully you'll find a cream you'll like this way without too much trouble or wastage.
You might be a pepper taster. If so creams such as TFA Bav are always going to have a hint of it (less after a month steep tho)
I might try the simple 2 flavour recipe idea- maybe less flavours will be less taxing on the taste buds? I was going to vape something light like Oba Oba to give my olfactory system a bit of rest. I do vape a lot of bold tobaccos which probably aren’t helping.
I think it’s a lot to do with dehydration though. Since slinging glass after glass of water down my gullet it has improved significantly.
It may have also partly been frustration. Frustration at being locked up at home for days on end and frustration at certain profiles I’ve been trying to tackle fairly unsuccessfully for a while- like chocolate as a main note and an obsession with texture!
I’ve retested some of the mixes I thought were boring and generic tasting before and, although they still need work, they’re a lot better than I initially thought.
Thanks for the 2 flavour mix idea, I think it might be more interesting than a plain, light cream or something.
