Best way to break down a liter of 100mg/ml nicotine for freezer storage. Also bottle suggestions.
submitted over 5 years ago by posthxc1982Proud Sidebar Reader!

I'm going to be purchasing a couple liters of 100mg/ml PG base nicotine this month. Ideally I want to break it down into 60ml Amber boston round bottles with polycone caps and keep 1 bottle in the refrigerator for current mixing. This will be my first foray into DIY. I was wondering the best place to get the appropriate bottles for storage. Any advice suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've looked through the vendor list for bottles but I'm not entirely sure what the best course of action would be. I've estimate between the vapers in the house I'll be using about 43ml's a month of nic. Thank you.

Edit: I live in the US and am prepping for May, forgot to mention that.

Despite how many times we say "never buy DIY supplies from Amazon", this is actually the exception. There is a lot of competition for amber glass round Boston bottles, I doubt you will find a better price any where else. Polycon caps are great for freezer storage because apparently the rubber in the droppers will freeze and degrade. Be sure to get one bottle with a dropper for your working bottle.

I will make sure to get one with a dropper. I do use amazon every month but was uncertain looking around for bottles from there. I will look again, thank you!

For long-term storage, you're best off leaving the containers you receive it in unopened for as long as possible. Opening a jug and pouring the nicotine into smaller containers introduces oxygen, and should not be done until as close as possible to the time of consumption.

It's my understanding the containers that they come in are not for long term storage. All of the vendors that I've looked at sell their nic in clear plastic bottles or blue plastic bottles. I know you should try to not introduce oxygen to the nic but I have to get into DIY now. I'm in the US and am preparing for May.

P.S. PVC and PET are fairly good O2 barriers, albeit not as good as glass. HDPE, PP and PS are very poor O2 barriers.

So the liters of nicotine I ordered from LNW are in HDPE bottles. Will they be sufficient for storage in the freezer for a period of time or should I transfer them into glass or PET. Or if I seal in ziplock gallon freezer bag over each one of the plastic liters will it slow oxidation till I’m ready to use and transfer into smaller glass bottles

That's very useful info, thanks.

Carolina xtract is best for long term storage, it is diluted with deoxygenated PG and bottled in an oxygen-free atmosphere.

For anything that comes in cheap plastic bottles, you're better off putting those in ziplock bags purged with nitrogen or argon for storage than opening the bottles prematurely.

I don't think I can afford Caroline xtract though I wish I could. Alright, thanks.

What’s happening for you guys in May? In April they’re completely banning flavours, and adding a .50 cent/millilitre tax. Got all my supplies last month, I’ll never spend a dime on pre mixed juice again.

It's a dead line. Any and every ecig related product that hasn't been approved by the Food & Drug Administration will be illegal to sell. There's an expensive aplication fee ($200,000 or upward). Each juice, and each milligram level of that juice is supposed to be a seperate application. It will essentially kill off almost the entire vaping industry here in America. There will probably be a few (big tobbaco backed) brands that'll be okay. Ejuice makers will either look to sell their stuff globally, or just shut down if not approved by the FDA.

I keep my nic in 100ml gorilla bottles in freezer and mix bigger batches for Daily use and some new every time i mix. :) normally keep 1l 100mg/ml and 200ml of 200mg/ml in my freezer in ziplock bags just incase :)

I used to use (PET) plastic as well and never had any problems either. Glass is ideal, but not totally essential. You dont have spray any of that wine saving shit in there either IMO. To the top, and airtight has always worked for me. waits for the down vote brigade to commence

Yes, very little oxygen left in the bottle. I have switched to glass since. But I used to just keep it in PET bottles. I'd fill them up almost all the way to the top. Tape the cap shut, and then add another plastic barrier. Airtight..

I aint gonna lie, I cheaped out and went with mason jars and filled them all the way. The reagent bottles I was planning on using came broken or didnt show up in time (I was not messing around with a gallon of nicotine more than once. I was terrified of spilling it). Found some info that mason jars arent bad on another forum site, so I went out and got mason jars. Its at your own risk cause like everyone says, polycone caps.... But I can in general and I have mine in the freezer, double ziplocked, in a black trashbag to keep light out, and the freezer is nicotine only..So... yeh. Do widemouth if you go mason jars. You dont want the ones with a neck otherwise they'll shatter if they are frozen.

If you have no room problem in your freezer, then dilute your nicotine heavily.

I have plenty of room. It's a floor model deep freezer, but thank you.

You don't have to get amber bottles, as it is dark in the freezer.

That's a good point. But ideally the bottles will be taken out of the freezer and kept in the refrigerator for current mixing. I just want to minimize exposure as much as possible.
