As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!
Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.
#This week, this is also where you can comment to win the Beverage-Type Flavors Pack ($70 value!) from Flavorah and the new Flavorah recipe book!
This pack includes FLV Cola and the amazing Root Beer, Bourbon, Citrus Soda, and Eggnog flavors as well as Brut Bubble Wine, Back Bar Bitters, Coffee, Elderflower, Horchata, Irish Cream, Juniper Gin, Mocha, Morning Mimosa, Raisin Rum, and Tequila Agave.

I have FLV Cola, FLV Root Beer, and TFA Root Beer Float (if root beers count), but haven’t tried any of them yet! I’ll mix them up this week!
007 Cola by u/AlfredPudding is still wizardry. I’m not even going to attempt to describe it. All I have to say on that recipe is, if you have not mixed it up yet, do so and let your taste buds be amazed
I agree 007 is my favorite cola recipe, And if rootbeer counts FLV Rootbeer is the best solo soda flavor IMO
I was sadly disappointed by flv root beer. I tried it at 4 and at 6 but I never got root beer from it. Or the root beer I wanted. I’ll have to go back and try it again. Maybe.
Aww. What’d it taste like to you?
Disappointment and failed dreams. I actually think this was more about one where I had a solid idea of what I was expecting but didn’t realize it until I found that flv root beer wasn’t it. I’ll have to retry it one day and figure out why. I’m 100% certain it was an expectation issue.
Does this include Dr Pepper types? Been wondering where to start, is there a good base concentrate I can use or should I try to bend something like 007 cola?
For Noted next week, I'm bringing a few Dr Pepper types of flavors to the table. I shall try and explain them in the episode as good as I can.
Hey I’ve been taking the short form notes for the Noted shows but I also write up full notes for myself. I have done fair few episodes now as I have been going back and writing up older ones as well. I find it really useful when I’m mixing to be able to look back and find out what they said about specific flavours so maybe other people might too?
I wrote a lot of these notes with the idea that I’d be the only one reading them. Sorry I don’t have time to check them all and change things but I’m pretty sure they should make sense.
I’m gonna be copying and pasting them into their respective FOTW threads. It might take me a few days to post them all. I hope they are of use to someone. Cheers
Thank you!
Ive hit a bit of a snag already- I can’t post in some of the FOTW threads. Do they close after a certain period of time?
I still need to try that FLV Root Beer I bought some time ago, guess I will use it with Fitz's.
And speaking of fizz I should probably revise that Gin Tonic receipt I made back in 2017 when I started DIY to have some fizz after all..
Noted Ep 141: COLA (ft. Kittybit)
Up to WF Rum and Cola ranked by ID10-T and Emily. After that Kittybit categorised and ranked them.
TFA Cola Syrup: Harsh, astringent. Tastes more like a terrible mix of chemicals than soda. A lot of citrus, cherry like sweetness, overlaid with something that tastes like wood varnish smells. Kittybit thought this was more of an additive to add a little sourness to another cola. As a SF has vinegar note? (10.53) and (41.43)
TFA Cola Soda: Dark, thin and very spicy. Kittybit found it harsh and like burnt, sugar free cola with plastic off note. (12.47) and (40.51)
TFA Cola Fizz: Not a SF cola. Might work as an additive to help another cola give the impression of being fizzy. Couldn't use this with any soda- would have to be a cola, or perhaps a root beer, as it's dark and spicy. Acidic, citrus like tartness, without tasting like citrus. Even though it's dark it lacks the caramel type of sweetness of a cola. Really sharp, nearly astringent. Thin, top heavy. 1% added to a really flat cola flavour livened it up quite a bit. Cheeba didn't like it as it didn't read cola and has bitter after taste. Kitty found it to be a generic cola with nice sweetness at 4%. Starts to get sticky and syrupy at that %. No fizz Tested up to 4%. ID10-T suggest using up to 1% to liven up another cola and give the impression of fizziness. (14.10) and (55.54)
TFA Dr Pop: Terrible! A little spiced cherry vanilla in the top note, like a knock off Dr Pepper. But to ID10-T, the rest is weird and waxy with chemical after taste. Kittybit found it to lack sweetness and the almond wasn't very good. But with some sweetener this could be somewhat in the right direction. Slight plastic off note, which could probably be covered with sweetener or the addition of a sweeter cola. No fizziness. (16.09) and (35.36)
FW Dr Soda or Dr Pop: Dr Pepper flavour- find current name: No effervescence at all. Really sweet, has the darkness and the mix of spices of Dr Pepper. Not a bad Dr Pepper overall, although not completely accurate. Thick and syrupy. (17.05)
Recipe- HIC Dr Pepper recipe - used all FA. The base was FA Cola with Black Cherry, Vanilla, Marzipan, Almond. Kinda worked, especially for 2015 era. If you wanted to make a Dr Pepper it would probably be best to put it together in a similar way. Would need a cola, but a better one than FA. Or an additional cola to FA. May need a cinnamon if the cola base wasn't spicy enough. But at such a low % that you don't actually taste cinnamon, just the spice. You'd need more vanilla, but not so much that it would turn into a coke float. FA Vanilla Bourbon would likely be the best option. More dark cherry, would have to be a black cherry, but something better than FA Black Cherry, and a little marzipan.
CAP Cola: Not very good. Full flavoured, dark, sweet and syrupy. But it's very spicy, can't work around it. Some may get a cleaning product note? Kitty's favourite cola as it's thick, sticky, syrupy. Too dark and too spicy. But at 1-2% may be a good companion to a lot of colas to give it syrupy, thick sweetness that many lack. Something with a strong top note, like FA Cola, could cover some of the spiciness of CAP. Kitty, Emily, Cheeba tested at 3-4%. ID10-T tested at 6%. (20.32)
Booze and Colas:
WF Rum and Cola: Lacks booziness. Has a little rum, but mostly cola. The cola is pretty accurate though, although more Pepsi and a pretty flat. Pretty soft overall. Kittybit gets smokey note, nobody else did. But would be better to build from scratch. (21.19)
Wrecka Bourbon Cola: renamed to Reeka (sp?) Range? Kittybit gets Play Doh and coconut off notes. The coconut actually makes the Play Doh oddly pleasant. Bourbon is very strong with a little bit of flat cola. The bourbon is good and authentic. But would be better to build from scratch. (26.42)
Cherry Colas: None of these are good! Better to make from scratch.
VT Cherry Cola: Kittybit got just perfume. Not even any cola. Bad cherry. No fizz. (30.34)
CAP Cola Cherry: The cola in their Cola Cherry doesn't taste like the same cola as CAP Cola. Bad cherry and weak cola. Kittybit got perfume off note. No fizz. (31.02)
TFA Cola Cherry: Kittybit also got perfume off note. Not a particularly good cherry or cola. No fizz. (32.11)
Dr Pepper Types:
HS Pepper Soda: Not a Dr Pepper. Not even a soda. Bland and plastic-y. No fizz (33.32)
FA Dr Who: A good cherry cola. A bit flat, like most colas. Like a cola with bad marzipan in it, which can be confused with an ok cherry. Not authentic to Dr Pepper though. (34.12)
TFA Dr Pop: See above notes. (35.36)
MB Dr Beat? Does contain sucralose. Gets fairly close to Dr Pepper. Has a bit of funkiness. Good mouthfeel. Nice, sweet, rounded almond. Does have a little bit of fizz. (36.18)
Colas: 16 out of the 17 are pretty bad!
TFA Cola Soda: See above notes. (40.51)
TFA Cola Syrup: See above notes. (41.43)
HS Red Cola: Has an anise off note. The cola is flat, generic and not very authentic. (42.39)
FW Cola: Cola is not too bad. Has some syrupy depth. Not boring like many colas. But Kittybit gets plastic off note, although he does have a sensitivity. So others may not pick it up. May be able to cover plastic with sweetener? (44.30)
INW Cola: Cola flavour jelly candy. Strong lemon note. The actual cola is quite weak, the candy note is over powering it. Could be used as an accent for a cola candy flavour, but probably not the main cola in a mix. (45.43)
LB Cola Freeze: Has nice grainy texture and is very candied and syrupy that leans towards a slushy. No cooling. Pretty weak. But tasty, very sweet, no off notes, very thick. Definitely needs to be mixed with a stronger cola top note as the flavour sits mostly in the middle. FA Cola and this are a good combo. Tapers off at the end. No fizziness. A bit dull and boring as a SF. Use around 8%. (49.06)
VT Cola: A bit dull. Light, odd, but not unpleasant funkiness to the sweetness. Likely would easily get lost in a mix. No effervescence. (51.45)
TFA Cola: Mediocre. Has nice sour note and a little sweetness. The kind of cola flavour in cola gummies. No off notes. (54.10)
TFA Cola Fizz: See above notes. (55.54)
MB Fizzy Cola: Actually fizzy. Cola not that strong or syrupy. Generic cola with a little sourness. A bit harsh. Could use as an accent to add fizz to another cola. Might work well in an MTL? Can use at 5-6% (57.59)
WF Cola Gummy: Authentic to a sugar free cola gummy. Nice gummy texture. Slight vanilla note that adds a little sweetness. (59.47)
FLV Cola: Dark, thick, just enough spice. Not overly sweet, but does have some sweetness. Really nice syrupy depth. A little dry, some additional sweetener would help. But has something like effervescence in the top. Has a slight cherry-ish fruit note, which isn't unpleasant. Would be a good candidate to turn into a cherry cola. (1.00.47)
FA Cola (USA Pleasure): Has no real issues. Like a flat, store brand cola. A little thin. Weak for FA. Not very sweet. Not very saturated at any %, get the top note then it tails off. Good top note though, nice spiciness. Use with another, more base-y cola, like LB. Probably essential if you are into making colas. Use up to 4-5%. (1.03.26)
FA Cola, FA Watermelon and FA Soho are the only FA flavours that can be used as high as 4-5%.
Cheeba's trick for making cherry cola- use INW Marzipan.
CAP Cola V2: Very similar to V1. No butiric. Deep syrup notes, nice amount of sweetness. Cola gummy type flavour. Touch of cinnamon. Kitty gets a slight burnt plastic note in the back that didn't get in V1. Easily covered in a mix. (1.05.44)
HS Blue Cola: Supposed to be Pepsi and actually is more Pepsi like. More citrus-y, not as spicy, dark or caramel-y as Coke. Nice sweetness. Has a little body. Flat, store brand style Pepsi. No weird off notes. Has lingering after taste, unlike many other cola flavours that taper off into raw VG. Can be vaped as a SF. (1.09.14)
While it doesn't taste at all similar, bubblegum shares a lot in common with cola. Vanilla, citrus, spice.
DV Classic Cola: Designed more as a one shot. Really good generic, store brand cola. A little spice, syrupy. No off notes. Nice syrupy sweetness. Good vaped as a SF. The cola is bold enough to stand up in a simpler, 3-4 ingredient mix. No effervescence. Could add some VT Sherbet to add fizz. (1.13.26)
CAP Cola: Emily, Cheeba and ID10-T strongly disagree with the placement of this as number one! I See above notes. (1.16.12)
2% FA and 8% LB are a really good combo. Maybe FA and WF Cola Gummy may pair really well. Also FLV with 1-2% of CAP Cola to give FLV the thick, syrupy sweetness. May also help with FLV's dryness.
Recipe- 007 Cola by AlfredPudding. A cola recipe that doesn't use any cola flavours. Recipe of the year- DIYorDIE. The best cola for a purely cola flavour. There have been recipes made that add one element to this- like mango, bourbon. Could add some LB Vanilla Ice Cream for a coke float. (1.21.15)
Is there a cherry coke recipe around? I swear I remember seeing it somewhere. Sounds delicious!
FA cola 4% FA black cherry 2% Cap supersweet 1%
(This isn't my creation, but one I picked up from somewhere years ago and have always knocked it up.) I've never felt the need to mess or change it as it was pretty spot on for such a simple mix.
FA black cherry is perfect for a cherry coke, one smell of the bottle and you will know what I mean. Doesn't change at all with a steep...literally shake n vape.
Every week, you stray further from God's light.
There is no god and if FOTW titles aren’t evidence enough of that for you, I can’t imagine what would be.
I'm still a mod of this sub, so I guess that puts the nail in the coffin of this matter.
Never tried any cola flavor. But 007 Cola by /u/Alfredpudding is great. Maybe FLV citrus soda might fit in there since, for me, the fizzy feel in it is stronger than fizzy sherbet.
Fizzy sherbet isn't actually fizzy. That's just the Australian name for what us Americans call pixie stix.
I just recently mixed up a 10ml of .007 Cola by u/Alfredpudding and it's good but the FLV Rich Cinnamon seems to be overwhelming the other flavors. Would I be right if I assumed this was because of the size mixed? The recipe calls for a very low percentage of FLV Rich Cinnamon, like less than 1 drop for a 10ml total mix.
I mixed a 15ml bottle last night. The problem with mixing that small of juice is the amount of cinnamon used. Even making 15ml, the recipe called for .01g, which is actually less that what is usually 1 drop.
Maybe try mixing a larger bottle so you can more actually get the amount of cinnamon more accurate
Ever wonder what flavors comprise cola? I don't know about modern colas, and personally am not a fan of those, but here's a link to what reportedly went into the original Coca-Cola 220 years ago:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coca-Cola_formula#Pemberton_recipe
Ya know, when the actual FOTW isn't necessarily my thing, at least I have the post titles to look forward to. Haha...
I've never really thought about a Coke flavored vape for myself. I tried a vanilla Coke from vapewild early on in my vaping journey. It was like a very watered down black licorice flavored coke with a tiny hint of vanilla. Very underwhelming. I'd be interested in making a solid vanilla coke for my boyfriend, though. & A root beer float, but that's weeks away.
Would shisha vanilla work? Or is that too strong of a vanilla for a vanilla coke?
A good root beer sounds delicious..I've only ever tried a RB vape once...a few years ago. Cream soda would be awesome as well. Since I've never actually made a soda vape.. Intrigues me.
Try FW Rootbeer Float, I like it at 8 to 10% don't let the name fool you I don't detect any float or creamy notes. It is a delicious rootbeer, reminds me a lot of DADs Rootbeer Barrels.
Adding to my next order. Looks like there's FW Root Beer and FW Root Beer Float. Have you tried both of them? The Float is the pick? How do they differ?
I have not tried the regular FW rootbeer, so I'm not sure how they differ. I have tried FLV rootbeer this is definitely a good one to but the FW seems to be spicier to me wich I like better. I have also tried CAP rootbeer honestly this one is a waste of time to me. Its criminally weak, like a cheap rootbeer that was in a cup of ice and the ice melted diluting it, and it fades to boot.
So this one worked last week, might as well work this week.
TFA swedish fish 10%
TFA cola 5%
Result is a gummy cola bottle.
No idea who deserves credit for that, maybe king Tut, it has been around for ever.
some interesting facts, in case you didnt already know,
coc* coma (TM) was originally made from extract from coca-leaves (south america)as well from extract of the socalled "cola-nut" from africa. both contain amphetamins, which is why cola was an alternative to coffee. and yes, it really pushed your limits ^.^
today, the amphetamins are subbed with caffeine, but it still contains anis and cinnamon, both of which id never have thought to find them in cola.
as well interesting, cola tastes everywhere in the world EXACTLY the same. historically there was a change in recipie in the 80s, (did they switch from natural ingredients to artificial flavoring to ensure it always tastes the same?) and soon after that they came out with cherry cola, cola light and cola /s caffein.
my personal favorite cola aroma is from copy cat - cola cat, i mix it at 4% with 5% LAs lemonade . its not yet cola, and that is the final curiousity about this very particular taste,
the original recipie, how it tastes today, afaik has never been fully cloned 1:1
the ingredients are publicly known, yet all of the many attempts to create a true clone have failed, afaik none of them taste like the original. invented 1886, it still has its own unique taste even ~135 years later, unabashed.
personally, i think since this stuff is so widely common throughout the world, the original recipe should go over to public domain...
interesting, cola tastes everywhere in the world EXACTLY the same.
Nah, i really don't think so. Cola tastes very differently (well at least to me).
Nothing beats glass bottled coke, my second is mcdonalds (but often too syrupy), coke in a can is worse (slightly metallic taste and lower carbonation) and coke in plastic bottles is another step lower and i try to avoid it (slightly plastic taste and low carbonation); when drinking out i always ask if they have a bottled coke; if not, then i often order something else. I could believe the syrup is the same (although in mcdonalds seems sweeter and too syrupy for me), but bottling or the process clearly effects carbonation & taste. Talking about coke in the same country, but i had the same experience in other parts of the world too.
what i meant was - even if your distinctions may be correct - is that they taste the same wether youre in johannesburg, in rio or paris. even in dheli coke is coke, and not pepsi or something entirely else. so yes, the syrup is the same all across the world.
I've had coca cola from america, korea, china, and japan. They all tasted different. For whatever reason the brand changes the formula to accomidate (spelling) different tastes
IMO, Japan has the best one. I may be biased but that is just my opinion. I would like to taste coka cola from the middle east and even south america
yoda soda is excellent. Unique and unusual. Perfect for coming warm weather. Thank you u/staybert for this.
This is my first post...Yippe. I have TFA Cola and FA USA Pleasure Cola. Neither really have a "soda" like texture and more like a cola gummy bottle. Best recipe I have created with either would probably be Gummy Cola Bottles. I only have TFA Root Beer and my friend likes this recipe, Root Beer Float. I really need to stop putting 1% FLV Cream into everything...I have a problem, and admitting it is the first step to recovery.

This recipe works, but needs help. I have only ever used Cola Flavor by TFA and Cola Flavor by Capella's, because that's how I roll. But after watching "Noted:" episode 9, I came across Flavour Arts offering. I find it tastes a little more authentic, but more like No Name rather than Coca-Cola or Pepsi.
EDIT: It formats right if you use markdown.
> Why doesn't it render correctly?
You only need to add a separator line ONCE. Take out all but one of the lines with dashes |---|---|---| The one you leave should be the 2nd line, right after the line listing the titles.
Thanks. I edited the post, but it still doesn't render properly. It's maybe a browser thing. Not to worry...
What do you do now that Soda Base no longer exists?
? no longer exists? Real Flavours are now produced by Real Flavours Canada: a division of DIY Ejuice. I just bought this stuff.
Only cola I ever tried was a house mixed juice from a shop, long ago. It was decent from what I remember. Really would love to make one of my own! As for the others, I use root beer for root beer float alot, as well as citrus soda. Also I have mocha but havent found a pairing yet so havent used it.
Oh, I remember when I started vaping, one flavor that got me hooked was a 'rum and coke'. If I remember right, it was around 2015 and had to order a spiced rum flavor then have a cola 'twist' added.
Don't remember much rum, just a sat out too long RC Cola taste.
Looks like I "need" to make another flavor order. Over 80 Flv flavors and rootbeer isn't one of them. Always been a bit leery of a few different vape flavors and rootbeer is one of them. Time to pop my rootbeer cherry
FLV Rootbeer is awesome. Very authentic tasting. Not one of those barrel candies either. Has a great mouthfeel like the real drink. Nice notes of vanilla, wintergreen, and anise.
No real interest in cola. We only have one cola flavor and we won it, its Capella Cherry Cola (RF) we won this with a bunch of other capella flavors. There are a couple others, strawberry and something else that has the (RF) any one know what this means? I do absolutely love FW Rootbeer Float, if that's considered "Cola". This the best rootbeer I have had to date. There is absolutely no "Float" or cream but the rootbeer is great.
RF=Reduced Flashpoint. This means that it has less (or no) alcohol than the original version. Capella did this due to certain shipping restrictions on products containing alcohol.
I don't have any soda flavors. Watching the FOTW shows from Noted are informative. I have been adding the most liked flavorings to a wish list to pick up later. I really liked the banana episode.
I would say if the group could decide on a top 3 for each week it would help newer DIYers on making a more informed decision on picking up new concentrates. Keep up the good work!
This recipe came from a theme I saw someone on discord bring up. To make something you normally wouldn't make.
So I expanded further on the idea. I decided to look through my list for flavorings I had picked up, but never used yet in a mix. Also creating a flavor profile based on a fictional product.
In the spirit of this week's FOTW, here's my take on a rum and coke flavored toothpaste.

I don't have much experience with soda, I only have a few.... flv Root beer, very good flavor and the recipe Root beer float is amazing, cap lemon lime and WF lemon lime soda...to me they're like sprite or 7up, and fizzy sherbet I guess...but something do not feel right with this falvor, to me at least...I don't know why but any recipe I've tried with it seems a little bit weird....oh yeah and I have ooo cream soda and if I go back to my note, I only wrote a word... disgusting, haha, but I tested it at 4%, maybe it was too high, I will try later at 1% to see if it's any better or just wait for tomorrow show!
I've tried a few soda flavors chasing that soft drink experience.
LB Cola Freeze is spot on, but it's weak, 10% and up for the best results.
LB Root Beer is okay, it's just not the style of root beer I like.
LB Dew Mountain tastes like a harsh store brand soda.
RF Baja Soda is something. Not sure what is actually is because it does not taste like a Baja Blast Mountain Dew.
