Grabbed some of my oldest nic yesterday for some mixing today, and what with the new regulations coming, possible nic taxes, etc.. I thought some of you might like to see how properly stored nic will stand the test of time. (6 years so far)
This is from Heartland Vape, 100mg in PG, purchased in April of 2014 - stored in amber glass bottle with polycone cap - filled to about 1/8" from the top, no added gas (argon, nitro, etc)
First read it as “Photos of 6-year old stored in a freezer”
I tried to get into DIY about 3 years ago, but it didnt stick, but I had a bottle of 45mg/ml nicotine sitting in my closet for like 3 years, I tried it out and it was harsh, but still gave me a nic fix
It pretty quickly turns sour and colored purplish/brownish for me at room temp, at least in 100% VG. Which may also be a bad idea. I use a lot more nicotine than you, and it definitely ruins my juice. The smell is awful. Nic salts on the other hand seem to keep exceptionally well
Does nicotine in mixed juice degrade over time? This from the freezer is fine, but if I have juice I made 2-3 years ago, does the nicotine degrade to the point it would be a lower nic strength? I know it will oxidize and will be a little more harsh, but I've got some old stuff that still tastes great.
I think it does but in such a minute amount that you really wouldn't notice.
The juices I've been vaping for the past couple days were both mixed in March of 2017 - apple 'bacco right now with my coffee and a Placid remix, which is still crystal clear and not harsh at all
From what I remember of my research in the past, 1-2%/year is normal degradation. The oxidizing is the main process that causes this, with the harsh peppery smell/taste caused by the byproducts of that reaction. It will become unvapeable from taste well before there's a noticeable difference in perception of Nic effects though, especially as all the other flavor compounds go through their own degradation.
Good to know, thanks! I have some watermelon Crack and Prairie left from before I started diy, so it's close to 4 years old and still tastes pretty normal.
I've been using 4yo nicotine from Heartland Vapes. 100mg/ml in PG, broke down into 120ml clear glass Boston rounds with polycone caps. I grab one when I need it and keep the working 120ml in the fridge. IMO nothing has changed whatsoever. Just fill all the freezer bottles with as little air as possible.
So...how does it taste in an unflavored juice?
What is your recommendation for storage before opening a new bottle? I have a fresh, unopened bottle of 100mg/ml. 1000ml total in PG. I've had it in the fridge for the time being. Should I transfer it to the freezer until I'm ready to open it and then transfer the extra portions back to the freezer while I keep out my immediate use ration? Does it really matter as long as it stays sealed? Got it from River Supply about 2-3 weeks ago. I don't have a lot of room in my freezer.
At your pace, do you estimate a couple of years worth? If so, a bunch of amber glass bottles with polycone caps is a good way to ensure longevity. I seperated a liter in 2015, and recently found a 60ml that fell where I didnt see it. Still good as new.
I just got some amber Boston rounds in an order last week so I could store this nic for the long haul. Just wondered if there was any great rush to separate and freeze or if I should just wait until I'm ready to open it. I won't be using it until I run out of my current supply in several months.
Still have nic I'm using on the regular from around the same time period.
Mine is also in paper bags (excessive) and I store it in the bottom of the deep freeze to avoid any excess irritation. Looks and tastes as good as the day I ordered it from Nude Nicotine forever ago.
Here I am with stuff from Nude Nicotine that's unvapeable at 3mg after like a month or two in the freezer
