How many smokers have you helped convert to vaping???
submitted over 5 years ago by optimal-primus

In the last few years I have helped convert around 10 people to vaping . First it was family members (2 of my brothers and my sister inlaw ) and more recently a couple of friends and 4 of my work colleagues. I never preach about vaping and they mostly approach me for info about how vaping help stop me smoking . I do my best to advise on starter set ups and as my main hobby is mixing I am able to tailor recipes to their wants so they have as good an experience as possible right away . I think that’s the most important part as it can be a bit expensive to get going when you start vaping if you just walk into a vape shop or order randomly online. It’s costs me very little but I take a lot of pride in helping people start vaping and get away from the death darts . I ALWAYS tell anyone who asks for help and advice that they must really want to quit first and then commit to it’s as best they can and I will help as much as I can. Would love to hear of similar experiences

Net 0. All the people I've helped convert have all gone back to cigarettes for one reason or another. Like vaping kills people. Like vaping is too expensive. Like vaping is just as bad as smoking. Like "you've got to be kidding me: you want me to vape something you cooked up in your kitchen?" I am no where near being a master of DIY and can't make the variety of juices people want. You can't make people vape and you can't make people want to quit smoking. Sigh.

I’m also no where near being a master of DIY but I’m able to purchase as much DIY gear as I want an use this subreddit and sites like ATF and ELR to research and try sooooo many recipes so when someone does ask my advice I’m able to help them zero in on a recipe that will at least get them over the hump that is the few few weeks off the cigs. Your right you can’t make people vape or stop them smoking but at least you tried. It’s was their willpower that failed not your willingness to help them

Same. Everytime were at a bar they hit my caliburn or mesh pro and say I should get one of these. I say great and make suggestions. Next time I see them they say I should get one of these and the cycle starts over.

Round 0 for me as well. My dad (30+ years smoker) switched on his own though. I am happy to make a juice for anyone who wants but ultimately it is their choice to dump cigs and I (try to) not judge, it's a hard habit to dump after all. Don't fret about not being able to make a 'variety of juices people want'. If someone's a smoker they essentially have a choice of regular or menthol and I am sure you can do a shitload more variety than this.

My pops stopped smoking and vapes exclusively cliché that I make for him. Sometimes it’s a financial pain but it keeps him alive longer I’ll keep doing it.

Edit- he’s pushing 60 and smoked since he was like 13.

I want to say somewhere between 100-500 (hard guess) lol Ive been working at a shop for 5 years. I love what I do and to know that vaping worked out for them makes me feel great. I honestly feel like I’m saving their lives.

Helped a few but the main person is my better half and I'm still trying after about 11 years ;(. It's her choice and I respect that but I'm always buying her the latest pod tech and letting her try all the new flavours that's out and as far as if have converted her is to cut down on the cigarettes.. But I have no problem buying her the cigarettes if I have to because its her choice in the end and I just hope 1 day soon she may give the cigarettes up for good..

I do very similar things, I mix and it seems to really help to have people come over and make there first juices, and get to try all the different types of vapes. We keep "house vapes" and offer them to smokers as an alternative to going outside to smoke. It has been really effective in getting people interested in vaping. My SO works at a Dr's office and has helped quite a few people quit. If you are interested I have a sub reddit to help people, its r/arkansasvapehelp I also make video for both vaping and medical marijuana. I would be happy to talk with you anytime and work together to help people if you have any interest. Please let me know, I would be happy to send you the link to some of the videos I have done, I am always looking for C&C. Either way, major kudos for trying to help people, and I wish you the best of luck, and hope you continue to help people. Happy vaping!!

Thank you very much, that means a great deal to me. I used to be able to volunteer at the hospital and nursing homes, but cant because of medical issues, so I chose to try and use this to help people. I cannot express to you how much it means when I get a message like this. Thank you so much for your kind words, and let me know if there is ever anything I can do to help :) hope you have a wonderful day and happy vaping :)

Just my dad. But he was a 2.5 pack a day smoker for 45 years. He also quit vaping after 5 years.

I'd say between 10 or 12 people. One guy drives me nuts though. He makes almost $90.000 a year and has a city vehicle with free gas and when he goes to vape shop will only buy the smallest bottle of juice and if he needs a coil he will buy 2. I showed him a couple sites where for 2 or 3 dollars more he can buy a bigger bottle of juice or get 5 coils for a few more bucks than what his 2 coils are and he says he doesn't want to waste money hoarding it, lol.

Nobody , people actually need to want to quit and they won’t last without that legitimate desire. It’s disappointing when you go out of your way to help somebody and they just go back to smoking

Not as many as I’d like. 3-4 maybe over the years. Still even working on my wife. BUT...have converted 4-5 people to diy in the year I’ve been mixing.

Keep working on your wife as she is the most important person you can help make the switch.

2 points

by billj81over 5 years ago

She loves the juice I make. She often tests mixes with me as a 2nd opinion or to help find possible off notes as my palate can be broken at times. But she just don’t want to make the switch. Even got her a mtl Rda to try to help

2 points

by optimal-primusover 5 years ago

20 years of smoking destroyed my palete too, I’m a strawberry mute and recipes really have to have a punch for me to get anything out of them. I recently helped a friend in work who had smoked for 40 years with a caliburn and a really good mint mix , he is 4 weeks clear of smoking and can feel a massive difference already . He had a recent health scare that really made him look at his smoking habit and he is doing really well with the caliburn

About 20 people, though those are the ones that stayed (there were more but they got in for a time then bailed and around 20 are whom I can confirm). I think it's mostly due to my background being a chemical engineer student and the fact that when I'm interested in a subject such as vaping in this example, I tend to research it a bunch. But mostly here in Egypt people get very aggressive about vaping if you bring it up then ease a bit when you bring up some research and use some of your studies, along with real life stories about it. Though the stigma of vaping kills is all too present in the media and the older populist here.

There are others that I'm so proud of that switched to vaping because of my eliquid. I make eliquid for my own and sell eliquid on a small scale to my local peeps. The problem rose when non smokers liked my juice and switched to vaping.... It's not a proud achievement of mine of any sorts TBH it's more of a nuisance to me, as they tend to: not understand the idea, unintentionally spread wrong info, act as if vaping is like the cool thing and finally they attempt to flex with my flavors which draws business opportunities to me, though with a side of people who are a pain in the ass. (For refrence I've been into DIY for about 5 years now, though I discovered this group about 4~6 months ago)

I always collect old vape gear that people have moved on from. It’s great to get someone going for free. I’ve gotten every person except one to switch out of the 40 or so people I’ve given devices too. The one that didn’t loved MTL vaping. I even bought him two of my favorite MTL atomizers at the time and told him I would build and rewick his atomizers twice a week. He always offered $5 but I would never take it as it was way more than material but he hit that thing all day! Then would step out and “need” a cigarette after choking down 18mg on a 1.0 ohm coil. He left my job after years of this going on and me trying about anything I could to fully convert him. Not to get too cheesy but he was the one who got away.

I got my barber, one of my coworkers and his dad to quit smoking with vaping

At least 3-4 coworkers. One still vapes (we love our nic), one is NLE, and the other quit altogether.

My wife didn’t used to vape or smoke but I got her into vaping. does that count?

To clarify I didn’t push vaping on her she just wanted to vape after seeing me vape so much and using my vape

Vape Shop Owner here... A lot of people. First timers or people trying to quit smoking are my favorite customers. And when they come back 2 weeks later and tell me that they haven't smoked or that they cut down a lot on smoking I feel FANTASTIC! It's so awesome to think that just like me after trying to quit for years, finally they are making headway. Not everyone stays quit, but I hope that I can help people get a good first jump into vaping and help them have a healthier life. Disposables (although a lot of waste) are an awesome starting platform for people. I find people buy disposables a few times and then switch over to a device. It really makes me happy.

Cool. You just described how I quit. I had to pay close to 200$ at the time but I don't care anymore. That was like 3 years ago

1000 days

by 3HappyRobotsover 5 years agoMentholatier

Awesome! Another success story! Yeah disposables are expensive, but smoking cost me a lot more than $200/mo. Sounds to me like money well spent. Congrats on your 1000 days!

I converted 5 people. They all came to me. Two of them I convinced to pitch in 30$ to make my first buy to DIY

2, my wife and best friend. They stuck to it because if I (25yrs two pack a day) could do it, anyone could! It was easy for me being a menthol smoker to switch to a mint vape. It was hard for them to find flavors they liked to ease the craving. My wife is a Loaded Cookie Butter ADV all day everyday.... So boring 😴. Best friend is a Jam Monster or (Anything I didn't like an set to the side). I graduated to mixing my own flavors and wrapping/wicking my own coils. "I can Breathe again" run actually. Best shape of my 40yrs and I give ALL credit to the Vape industry. Thank You to anyone that reads this that had a hand in saving my life, wife and friend.

I got both my parents on it, with my dad eventually quitting everything but the nicotine gum. My mom however goes back and forth from cigarettes and her vape. Proud of my dad though.

Zero. It's almost like if you didnt come up with the idea by yourself then you automatically think it's not safe/won't work.

None. Nearly all my friends who smoke tried vaping like 8-9 years ago (when it sucked) and ended up giving it up because it sucked. I didn't get into it then, because it sucked, but about 5 years ago I did, with better equipment, and kept it up. None of them will try it again. :/

Imagine popping a pimple in your mouth. That’s vaping /S. Fuck “Truth” initiative. They have nothing real to say so they have to come up with asinine crap. At least they are a bit more respectful than the media and lawmakers who associate illness caused by illicit THC cartridges with normal nicotine vaping, cause mass hysteria, to the point I’ve heard my college professor saying, “Cigarettes don’t kill people like vapes do!!” And she is a literal computer programmer so not a stupid person.

Truth is still deeply connected to and funded by the same people causing this mass hysteria though.

0, I only know a few people, and they dont vape or smoke, my mom smokes though, I bought her a vape for christmas a couple years ago, but she never made the switch, she just cut down on her smoking and used both, then she lost her vape

my inlaws smoke 1 cigarello when they drink maybe once or twice a week, but my MIL has crazy views about the vape, she thinks it cause pneumonia due to water vapor in the lungs, Im not a very scientific person, so I couldnt really argue it, I just said there is no water vapor, its propelene glycol and she didnt really like me saying that

im pretty broke right now, but If I get some extra cash I might order a cheap vape from fasttech and gift it to my mom again to try one more time

Don’t let any one who smokes and drinks judge you for using a vaping product. A lot of misinformation is peddled by people who either lose profits because of this technology or people who just don’t understand it. Concentrate on your helping your mum if she is receptive as that is most important. I’m lucky I’m from the uk and because of our public health system vaping is seen in much better light

2 but kinda 4- Mom went to vaping tobacco flavor, then 0mg, then ditched flavor, and now vapes just pg/vg no flavor. Prior 50 year smoker.

MiL went to vaping tobacco flavors, then 0mg, now vaping 0mg fruit flavors. 45 years smoking.

Two friends went to vaping. Cut back to zero mg nic, then quit entirely. Both at least 20 years smoking.

Been a half dozen who quit and went back to cigs.

Great irony? I'm not a smoker or vaper.

Edit oh yeah and BiL- hes cut back on smoking, but smokes and vapes now.
