Hey guys, I have done both MTL and DL in my 4 years of vaping and I lean more on the MTL side. That being said, I also like DIY eliquid and here is where I still have a very very big question that is bugging me for ages:
How do I get a random recipe from ELR (or somewhere) that has been designed and tested in an RDA (or something like that) to taste good in an MTL RTA ? I have tried a lot of recipes and I found that the flavour just wasn't there when doing MTL from my digiflavor Siren V2, but then I tried the same juice from the same bottle in my Serpent SMM and the flavour was very good and I picked up on so many more notes.
I asked this same question here once before and the only good advise I got was to increase the percentages when mixing a DL ejuice for MTL and that works to an extent, but it's just not the same. Yes, it will be more flavourful, but still doesn't help much with not being able to taste certain notes (as opposed to DL). The flavors that do taste amazing in an MTL RTA are tobaccos and other very strong flavors.
Also, if you know any amazing thread with great recipes (MTL), please point me to it. Much appreciated.
Good question, I'm kinda in the same situation. From my experience, it's really about more basic (not necessarily boring) recipes with straightforward, stronger flavours and not too many subtle background notes. Just using higher percentages doesn't really cut it, you are still missing some less dominant notes at the end and if you mess with the ratios of the flavours to each other, it ends in a mess.
Since I love tobaccos and otherwise prefer fruity vapes with some mint/menthol/cooling, it's not a real problem.
Thanks for the reply. I like tobaccos as well, but not big on fruits at all I rather preffer coffees, creams, cheesecakes, etc. Would you mind naming one or more of your fav tobbaco recipes ?
Here's a simple MTL recipe that you might like.
- PUR Caramel Coffee With Sweet Milk 6%
- CAP New York Cheesecake 6%
- CAP Super Sweet 0.1 - 0.5%
Add 1-2% WS-23 to turn it into a Frappuccino.
Another good way to find MTL recipes: search on your favourite recipe website for everything with "pod" in the name of the recipe. If the site doesn't have a search function, do a Google search for "pod site:example.com" or "for pod site:example.com"
Recipes that work fine in a pod system like the Caliburn will work well in a more restrictive type of MTL RTA, too.
One thing I do is make a small batch recipe that I can test with my "tester" pieces. It is not perfect because there is not any steep time, but it has really helped me to find a good way of being able to work with a recipe while tasting it and changing it on the fly so to speak. I will usually put a small 40ML batch on my magnetic spinner and let it run for a short amount of time, then come and use the "testers" to see if it needs anything, and take whatever action is needed, then once I get it perfect, I can use it for a couple days and really see if it will come out well, and it is just a matter of making a larger batch. hope this helps if there is anything else I can help with please let me know and I would be happy to try and help. hope everything goes well, happy vaping :)
Simple is better. MTL coils are smaller, with less surface area, and aren't putting out a ton of vapor. Keep the profile simple, favor bolder flavors, and forget going for fine nuances or subtlety. So, recipes that have less going on generally come through better on MTL devices.
Sometimes you might have to goose up some flavors a hair, but I don't really run into that often, it's more like I sometimes have to *reduce* percentages for DTL use so it's less overwhelming on larger DTL builds.
Thanks for the reply. It makes perfects sense and I will keep this in mind. Would you be so kind to share some of your fav recipes ?
I primarily vape tobaccos on MTL devices, with the odd dessert or two here and there. Here are some that I've mixed and liked:
Hinterlander by Kopel
Campfire Nights by Foment_life
The Classic by SlashaLO
CinnAppleCream by eyemakepizza (works just fine in pods/MTL devices)
I spend more time putzing around with my own experiments than mixing other people's stuff, though. Right now, the one recipe I seem to not be able to put down is...well, a tobacco that uses bacon for a savory accent, which I was experimenting with over the past couple weeks: Dirty Old Man
Other than that, I'm still working my way through my stash of Rocket Fuel Vapes tobaccos.
Here's the trick with MTL recipes - the ones that do very well are ones that have no more than three flavours or less (sweetener may sometimes not count). If you use two of the same type of flavour to get your flavour profile that counts as one - so if you use two strawberries that's 1 flavour.
So - i have a strawberry cream recipe that's two strawberries and two creams. Works awesome in DL or mtl. I also have a three flavour grape that's excellent. Most of my 4 flavour recipies become a muddled mess and often has less flavour overall and just doesn't work.
If a recipe has 2 or 3 specific flavour profiles, it will TEND to do well for MTL

Here's a blueberry from Hippy vapes called 'my blue falcon' i mix for mtl for example - it's pure blueberry magic in the MTL, it's good in DL.

Blueberry (Hangsen)
3.00 %
Pineapple (INAWERA)
2.00 %
Super Sweet (CAP)
0.50 %
So look for simple, 2 - 3 flavour recipes that are good and you'll probaby find they're great for MTL.
Wow! That seems like a lot of HS Blueberry. I mixed it at 2% once in a recipe and it just took over. Since then Ive never used it at more than 0.5% and sometimes it still seems like that is too much for me. I was thinking of diluting it by 50%. Same thing for HS French Vanilla Ice Cream, I can't use that at more than 0.5% or it ruins my mix.
There is supposedly some excellent flavor-chaser MTL gear. You meed to find that. Not being my thing, I don't recall the best. Maybe Grey would know.
I wish. I was stuck on Kayfun Primes for a fair while, and now favor the QP Gata, and haven't really been keeping up with the latest and greatest in MTL gear.
Ah. So you only spend on expanding the dicodes collection, and not so much on the atty collection.
Heh. I had a 5 mile long wishlist for a fair while, but didn't feel super motivated to cross more stuff off of it until right before they announced a potential ban in WA back in September, so I narrowed shit down to like the top 5ish items, and ended up with the Dicodes mods and some Kayfun Lite 2019s. I like those, but the only real differences between them and the Prime are size, capacity, granularity of airflow control, and lack of juice flow control on the KFL2019. When set up the way I like, the KFL2019 vapes the same as my Primes and wicks high-VG stuff way better, but has an annoying weeping-through-AFC-screw issue, so...meh.
That was gonna be my last hardware buy, but the ban turned out to just be flavors. I moved down the list around November-December to include the QP Design and Billet Box stuff that I'd had my eye on, and crossed those off the list just to get in front of any more silly billy ideas by the state legislature. I didn't think the Gata was gonna be as awesome as it turned out to be, and was really looking at using it in RDTL mode with the same kinda builds I like in my single cell squonks, but turns out QP actually managed to nail a device that does both MTL and RDTL rather well. Since then, the Gatas seem to be all I want to use for 26 gauge MTL builds. I still prefer the Primes for smaller builds.
