Ingredients to Avoid
submitted over 5 years ago by SomethingPawfulWTF is a "Terpene?"

Can someone give me a brief list (or direct me to one) of ingredients to avoid in flavorings for the sake of erring on the side of safety? Also, does ATF put an indicator on said ingredients? I know I saw indicators somewhere but cannot remember if it was ELR or ATF (or both), but none of my inventory on ATF has any indicators next to them, so I would like to be sure. Thanks.

Sugars are the most likely to be dangerous, as they burn and create carcinogens at vaping temps.

Sucralose may break down and release chlorine (and then the rest of the molecule, which is a sugar, would burn and release carcinogens)

Oils. (Not essential oils, actual lipids). Can cause lipid pneumonia.

Vitamin E Acetate. Of no use in normal juice, this is a thickening agent which is excessively expensive. It was used in black market THC carts to make them thicker without actually using more purified THC. Killed a bunch of cheap, dishonest stoners, and brought a lot of bad press on us all.

DAAP will, if you vape undiluted TFA Butter at a quantity of a half ounce or more per day, every day, for multiple years, possibly lead to problems.

If you're inclined to do that, you've already got problems.

The fact that you lack any ability to taste anything, including how horrid that would be, for example? Yeah. I don't expect anyone would vape that more than once, and that only on a bet. (Losing a bet, and having to do it, I mean.)

"killed a bunch of Cheap dishonest stoners"? The customers who got sold dangerous shit are dishonest for some reason?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say he meant the ones hospitalized and lied about THC usage are the dishonest ones... just a guess though.

Yeah they're dishonest because they fucking lied to their doctors, leading to 'vaping' rather than scammers being blamed.

Well, considering the cost for intensive care that can be easily $5000 a day and up and the fact that some were maybe at risk losing their health insurance, this dishonesty is kinda understandable. Noone wants to leave hospital with a medium to high five digit debt if the alternative is a rather simple lie.

Isn't some amount of sugar in pretty much every flavoring?

Yea I am aware of Vitamin E Acetate and the bootleg thc vapes containing them.

What does DAAP mean?

Diacetyl

Acetoin

Acetylpropionyl

Ohhhhh durrr. Other posts I had seen had this as DA/AP so it didn't click initially.

No, sugar is only in a handful of flavorings, mostly from FW. Most other companies use artificial sweeteners, which are almost always far sweeter than sugar.

DAAP is Diacetyl/Acetoin/Acetyl Propionyl... various diketones that, when inhaled in quantities a order of magnitude higher than that inhaled by cigarette smokers (which is a order of magnitude higher than inhaled by vapers) over a prolonged period of time, led a subset of individuals working at a popcorn plant to become ill.

Yea I read about that "popcorn lung" and the plant workers. I did not know that only some flavorings contained sugar though. So thanks.

ELR has the warnings on the concentrates.

The way I see it, most of the "harmful" ingredients in vaping are also present in cigarette smoke but in vastly larger quantities. I quit smoking so I feel I've greatly reduced my risks. Everything can be harmful if used in too large of quantities. I'll still take my small amounts of daap as a positive step.

Truth is, inhaling anything into your lungs is not a good idea. Long term effects are unknown. We are guinea pigs. But knowing that I'm taking in these chemicals in a much smaller quantity puts me at ease.

Yea I totally "see" it the same way, and am aware of that fact. That being said, I am not going to have a heart attack over having a few recipes that use said ingredients, however I guess I would like to try to use them as infrequently as possible without completely ruling out flavors I love.

I hear ya. Just stating how I feel. If I'm putting something in my lungs, I'm accepting whatever risks come with that. I am overly ocd about any kind of dust or liquid particles getting onto my coils so I constantly have my vape in a case. If I feel something has gotten on my coil, I rewick and clean. You'd think with that, I'd be more concerned with the potentially harmful chemicals in my concentrates, but I'm not.

Well, I think like you said...many of us accepted far greater risks smoking for years, so it is an easier to swallow pill. And we have to accept the risks with vaping as well cause there is no real way to get around it--other than to just breathe air--and even then we are still inhaling shit we shouldn't be LOL.

Cinnamon? Supposed to be bad for your lungs. at least the molecule responsible for cinnamon flavoring (cinnamaldehyde). Too bad....I LOVE cinnamon.

Cinnamon is fine in moderation, but bad if it tastes like eating cinnamon powder by the spoonful. It should go without saying that anything that overwhelms your senses, like staring directly into the sun, is bad for you.

Frankly the greatest concern isn't any flavor ingredient, but the burning of sweetener residue if it is allowed to accumulate on your coils/in your wicks. Frequently rewicking (or replacing factory coil heads, if that's what you're using) is the #1 best thing we can do for our lungs.

Stay away from TFA honey. Not sure about the safety of it but I do know it tastes like ass. Same with FA Blackberry
