As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!
Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.
#This week's flavor is.... ORANGE!

Ok, a few random thoughts - FA Bergamot. This shit is for orange flavors what INW Lemon Mix is to lemons. Potent zest flavor. Helps build a complete orange. I like it and CAP Sweet Tangerine as a base to make 'orange' from. Usually with another orange, which can vary, but I had a fairly nice Orange Crush juice I made up a while back. Turned out disappointing (I expected it to be SnV ready, but off the shake it was meh. Tried a few weeks later it was pretty good, but no idea of ideal steep time or anything, I had pretty much moved on to other projects and didn't regularly try it. Probably a two week steep? I'll dig the recipe up if anyone wants to try it.
Blood Orange - FA/FW. Pretty sure I use each at times. Neither is great solo, but they can help.
CAP Juicy Orange - meh. Can work, but takes work.
O think I have another, GL Orange, maybe it's BG Orange? Ok, again, but not a single-flavor orange.
Using Bergamot and Tangerine to build an orange. That's fascinating.
It seems like from trying a bunch of orange flavors that orange isn't hard to do just ok, but is very hard to do very well.
Problem is, so many people have different ideas of what orange should taste like. TicTacs? Orangina? Tang? Tropicana? A actual orange? Mandarin flavored vodka? It isn't hard to to some of those. Others, maybe.
I wonder if bergamot in combination with a black tea flavoring would make an Earl Grey tea flavor
Would depend on the black tea.
Most cases it'd just give a muddy orange zest with hints of grass clippings. But with the right combo? Yeah, should be tea. Earl Grey. Hot.
I'm concerned about your mental well-being, considering how you come up with these titles :) I wish I had notes to share but I don't use orange, but curious to see what gets contributed. Thanks.
Notes and recipe for SC Orange. Reposting here since I forgot to post it in the monthly thread so it got missed in /u/isumadog's awesome top monthly recipe post. Tangy Orange Creamsicle. Skip it if you're too impatient for a 20 day steep. It's paint stripper off the shake.
Also, 1-2% TFA Pineapple makes oranges much more true to a real orange. I have an Orange Crack recipe that's almost complete and is shockingly realistic.
FA Blood Orange sucks big time. People say TFA Pineapple is harsh but that FA Blood Orange is way worse. I will no longer mix any recipes with it.
FE Sweet Orange is my favorite mandarin type orange and is the best I've tried when pairing with licorice.
TFA Orange Mandarin - powdery-orange children's chewable medicine taste. Pretty harsh as well.
I like to use Fa Apricot in low percents along with the combo of Cap Sweet Tangerine & FW Blood Orange for a solid orange flavor. I have a ton of cap Juicy Orange, it’s okay, but it’s too harsh for me, and I prefer the latter combination for my Orange flavors.

How about Rootbeer for flavor of the week sometime?
I’ve ordered INW Bloody Orange and either the bottle cap wasn’t screwed down properly or it has eaten itself through the bottle. I’m not joking, it made the labels come off the bottles stored in the same container.
I’m genuinely scared to try that one, but if there’s anybody braver than me, I’m curious on your famous last words.
That is scary!
Where'd you order it from?
Part 1
Noted Ep. 134: ORANGES (ft. Concrete River)
Bergamot: Ranked
SA Italian Bergamot: Not very good. Tastes like bergamot plus lavender plus arugula (rocket). Has a green leafy vegetables plus pepper off note. Very thin, even for a bergamot flavour. Full flavoured at 0.5%. (4.45)
FA Bergamot: Tastes very accurately like the difference between earl grey and plain tea. Bitter sweet, fragrant, floral, a nice little green bitter edge, slightly spicy, orange rind note. But an accurate bergamot. A little dry and almost medicinal. Use in earl grey tea recipe or when it's paired with another citrus it turns out into a cereal lemon. Also works well with gin. Tastes very similar to VT, but about 4x as potent. (6.06)
VT Bergamot: Tastes very similar to FA, but weaker. 0.5% of FA is about equivalent to 2% of VT. Does have some subtle differences. It's a little bit sweeter than FA, not quite as floral or spicy, a bit more of an orange and lemon note. Not as dry as FA, smoother. VT tastes more like a fresh bergamot, whereas FA tastes like you would add to tea. (7.51)
Bergamot - Honourable Mention:
FA Hypnotic Mist: Supposed to be based on a bitter orange liqueur. Pretty good, reminiscent of Triple Sec or Grand Marnier. Has the same orange notes with some bitterness and sweetness. Use around 1-2%. (9.05)
Green Oranges: (Both terrible flavours) Green oranges are supposedly oranges grown in a climate that doesn't allow the fruit to turn orange, the chlorophyll remains in the orange peel. Although they are supposed to taste the same as normal oranges.
HS Green Orange: Not good. Bitter, slightly perfumey. No top notes, just a thin base of bitter and perfumey orange. (10.03)
HC Green Orange: Like eating a sweet, juicy orange in a plastics factory. Not just a slight plastic off note. More plastic than orange. (10.29)
Tangerines: Not Ranked
FLV Tangerine: Sweet, kind of candied- tastes like Tang, although not that artificial. Still has some depth and earthiness. Has a lemon note, which may contribute to the tarter top note this flavour has. Has a wide range, with base notes and bright top notes. Has a syrupy quality. Very bold. Not particularly juicy, although not dry. Tastes like orange Cool-Aid with real tangerine and lemon juice added to it. (12.10)
CAP Sweet Tangerine: Blatantly artificial tangerine flavour. Bright, sweet, syrupy, mouthwatering in a candy sort of way. Some people may experience harshness even when it is used very low. 2% is a good place for this flavour. (13.28)
WF Tangerine: Tastes like half tangerine and half orange. A bit sweeter, softer and more mellow than CAP or FLV. Use around 2-3%. (15.01)
FW Tangerine: Very top heavy, natural tangerine. Slightly waxy. Heavy, accurate zest, harsh, fades quite quickly. Nails a realistic tangerine in the top note. Shares a lot similarities with FW Blood Orange and FW Ruby Red Grapefruit in these ways. Definitely needs help filling in the base. Perhaps would work paired with WF? WF would fill in that base while FW may help to cover some of that orange WF has to make a more realistic, full tangerine. This flavour fades, so if used in a recipe that is going to steep for more than a couple of days, or a recipe that has anything with muting properties, like EM, Vanilla Swirl etc, use at around 3-4% to compensate. If being used in a SNV fruit mix keep lower, around 1%. (15.47)
Blood Oranges:
SA Brazillian Blood Orange: Nothing that reads as blood orange. It's tangerine zest- very zesty. Tart, a little lemony, very bright. Lacks the depth of a blood orange. A pretty good tangerine zest though. (18.25)
TFA Blood Orange: Blood orange flavoured chewable vitamin C tablets. But with a little earthy, sweet depth in the middle and lingering on the end. Chalky, powdery, candy body. (19.54)
FA Blood Orange: Very nice flavour. Not very juicy, a little dry. But full bodied, bright but also has depth. Fleshy body, like the meat of a fruit but without enough juice in it. (20.50)
FW Blood Orange: Not particularly juicy, although not dry. Top heavy. Sweet, zesty with a good orange flavour. Has some dark, earthy notes that make it a blood orange. A little bit deeper than FA and may be the more versitile of the two. Can use between 1-3%. (21.34)
FLV Blood Orange: A true, accurate blood orange. Has a good earthy depth that separates an orange and a blood orange, even tastes red. Gets rindy over 2%. Use around 1-1.5%. (22.21)
Part 2
Noted Ep. 134: ORANGES (ft. Concrete River)
Manderines:
TFA Orange Manderin: Harsh, lemony, floral, kind of dry, no real body. Just orange-y zest with some lemon-y notes and a really thin base. (24.56)
SC Manderin: Like vaping the powder that's used to make Tang. Very artificial, dry, chalky, a bit thin. Perhaps could be used in an orange pixie stick? Although would need help- maybe CAP Sweet Candy and VT Fizzy Sherbet? (25.16)
FA Manderin: Has a good flavour. But waxy and also oddly warm. Recipe: Sherb Clone by Captain Cannibal with 6% FA Manderine (26.12)
VT Manderin: Like canned manderin, but not quite as syrupy. Deeper than FA. A little thin. But pretty tasty. Smooth, especially for a citrus, no throat hit. Use around 2-3% (27.36)
Orange Creams: If you want an orange cream its pobaly better to mix your own from scratch as none of these are particularly great.
TFA Orange Cream Bar: A little bitter, medicine-y. Very bright, smooth after a steep, nice vanilla note. It's the non-flammable reformulation of TFA Orange Cream. (29.06)
TFA Orange Cream: Needs to steep, at least 1-2 weeks. As a SNV it's harsh, orange note is weird and tastes vitamin-y, the cream is very light. But after 2 weeks it has by far one of the boldest and smoothest orange flavours, although a bit artificial, as it doesn't fade- unlike many other citrus flavours. The cream really thickens up and becomes luxurious. Could be a good base for a fruit smoothie. (30.05)
CAP Orange Creamsicle: The orange is dull, slightly bitter and medicinal. But does have a really good vanilla cream note. It's thick and rich enough to read as the cream in a creamsicle. Halfway between ice cream and whipped cream. The orange to cream ratio is way off. Not nearly enough orange. The orange is a little throaty, especially considering how little of it there is. It definitely needs another orange. SFT at 4% (31.28)
FW Orange Dream Bar: Has a good balance of cream to orange. The cream doesn't have that much vanilla. There is separation between the orange and cream. The orange is a little more natural than it should be for a creamsicle. (32.44)
Orange Combos:
NF (Natures Flavors) Passion Orange Mango: Acidic tropical soap. (34.54)
LB Orange Banana: Good if it has steeped for 1-4 weeks (depending on how sensitive you are to the throat hit). Before then it's incredibly harsh. Use up to 8%. Still full flavoured after a month. The banana is pretty good, although slightly candied. The orange is really good. (35.00)
TFA Passion Orange Guava: The guava is good, sweet, syrupy and artificial. It's not nearly as funky as TFA Guava. The passion fruit is a little bitter, floral, harsh and is separate from the orange and guava. That floral bitterness that lingers on the end. The orange isn't very good. It doesn't taste natural, kind of candied. Has an odd creamy vanilla off note that seems out of place. Use at 5-6% for a single flavour. (35.58)
CAP Orange Mango with Stevia: CAP Sweet Mango with orange cool-aid. All the funkiness and sweet, over ripeness of CAP Sweet Mango, with orange cool-aid. The stevia is noticable. There's a diifferent sweetness with an earthy, bitter edge that lingers in the after taste. SFT at 5% (37.52)
VT Blood Orange Champagne: The best champagne flavour? Very boozy and effervescent. Has a deepness like a blood orange champagne as opposed to a mimosa. The blood orange does taste a bit artificial, like you would find in a store bought seltzer water. Works well as a solo flavour at 7-8%. However, plenty of flavour at 2%. (39.46)
FLV Morning Mimosa: The champagne has a bit of a funky edge. Prison wine, although still good. Really nice naval orange flavour. It gets astringent above 2%, almost rhubarb-y. Not quite bold enough for use as a solo flavour. Works well paired with VT Blood Orange Champagne as the realistic orange of the Mimosa hides the artiificial orange VT has, while the nice champagne in BOC helps with the funkiness of MM's champagne. (41.53)
Flavor Monks Monks in Love: An orange and strawberry flavour. It's really soft and not very flavourful- even at 7%.The strawberry tastes really natural, and not particularly sweet. The orange is also very natural tasting. (44.10)
WF Lemon Orange Rice Candy: Sweet, sticky. Like a lemon orange jolly rancher/ hard candy. Pretty accurate to the actual candies. The lemon does have a slight pledge note at 2-3%. Although more like Fruit Loops than full on cleaning product. Mixing with another pedge-y lemon could exasserbate things. (45.26)
If a lemon has a bit of a pledge-y off note it can often be rounded out with a little extra sweetener.
Part 3
Noted Ep. 134: ORANGES (ft. Concrete River)
Oranges:
CAP Tangy Orange: More acidic than tangy. The orange underneath that brighter top note tastes like orange chewable vitamins or an orange TicTac. quite hard to work with and takes around a week to calm down. Has a vanilla marshmallow note. Can be rowdy so use low and let it sit and calm down. (47.14)
VT Orange Juice: Not at all accurate to orange juice. It's not that sweet, has a banana off note and some people pick up a deep funkiness. It is however, smooth, dense and saturated. Tested at 2% and 4%. (48.48)
OOO Orange Juice: May be soapy? ID10-T was only one who tried it and he's especially sensitive, so may not taste soapy to everyone. Tastes like orange juice with some artificial orange flavour added. (50.36)
WF Orange Juice: Gets the closest to a good, accurate OJ flavour. Got a nice texture, pretty juicy. Not creamy or waxy like some other OJs. Tastes like orange juice and has right thickness. However, it does contain a lot of sucralose. It's a little too soft when used lower and a little too sweet when used higher. No sweet spot. However, this issue could be fixed by mixing with another orange. Around 5-6% is as full flavoured as it will get, without being too sweet. Not an SC flavour. (51.41)
CAP Juicy Orange: Not very juicy. Waxy and very harsh too some. Very sweet and artificial. As a SNV it's pretty thin but after a steep it thickens up and fills out. (53.44)
FLV Orange Citrus: Like a natural fruit flavour mixed into a waxy candy. Very waxy, which makes it difficult to work with. Use low- 0.5%, to avoid waxiness. Can be used low to add body to other citrus'. Very bold. Tastes kind of cooked. (54.52)
FA Orange: Naval orange flavour. Perhaps a little artificial, orange soda-ish. Versatile but dull. Not juicy, although not dry. Use around 1-2% (56.30)
INW Orange: Tastes like candied orange peel at 0.25%. Above that it gets more rindy and bitter, less sweet, musky, floral. (57.33) Like a worse version of INW Shisha Orange. It seems like if there's a shisha version the non-shisha version doesn't tend to be nearly as good.
INW Shisha Orange: Thick, tangy, syrupy. Nice depth. Almost spicy at the bottom end making it great for cocktail mixes. Use below 0.5% if using in a SNV recipe. It fades so if not using as SNV use around 0.75- 1% and let steep for a week. (58.40)
SC Orange (Perhaps the same as FE Sweet Orange?): Similar to INW Shisha Orange, just not as deep. It's thick, juicy, sweet, bold. Tested at 1%. (59.29)
FE Sweet Orange (Perhaps the same as SC Orange?): 1% is a little too bitter. 2% is where the sweetness fills in. Gets waxy above 4%. 3-4% tastes like canned manderine oranges with the syrup, very juicy. A little touch of peel in the top note, but minimal. The body is very sweet but still pretty bright. Thin syrupiness, smooth for a citrus. Has tendancy to get buried in a mix. (1.01.05)
NF (Nature's Flavors) Organic Orange: Not a lot of flavour at 3%. At 6% tastes a bit like orange marmalade, but not as sweet. Has bitter sweet, cooked peel notes. (1.02.34)
FW Orange Natural: Pretty acidic. Like an orange that's a little out of season. Not juicy or sweet enough for a realistic orange flavour. But also not candy. It is thin, bitter. Shares similarities with their Blood Orange but it's missing the earthy notes that makes the Blood Orange a more enjoyable flavour. Even at 6% it lacks flavour.
(1.04.06)
FW Ecto Cooler: Halfway between an actual orange and an orange cool-aid. A bit top heavy, not a lot of body. Straight forward naval orange base with powdery, Tang top notes. Not bad for an orange-aid type flavour. Not a particularly strong flavour, but it does get harsh quickly. 4-6% is full flavoured, but will have to cover the harshness at this percentage. (1.05.25)
Flavor Monks Orange: One of the more realistic, plain, naval orange juice flavours. But at 3% it's fairly soft and lacks any real punchiness. Flat a bit lacklustre and not very juicy. Although could be useful as a background orange that won't dominate other flavours. Has some thicker body without being waxy. At 6% becomes floral and perfumey. Although this may or may not change with a steep? It could be possible to cover floral off notes with other flavours. (1.07.28)
FA Royal Orange: A bit waxy. Not juicy, although not very dry. Not harsh, pretty smooth. Has some bright, tart, zesty notes. Use around 2-3%. Could be used to add some realistic orange flavour to another orange. But have to work around the waxiness. (1.10.10)
VT Orange Tang: Very accurate to orange Tang. Aggressively fake orange/ tangerine flavour, very sweet. (1.11.54)
VT Orange Marmalade: Not the same as their English Marmalade, which isn't good. This tastes very accurate to orange marmalade. Has some jammy body. Has really nice candied orange peel notes. (1.12.48)
Top Oranges:
INW Shisha Orange and TFA Orange Cream- both difficult to mix with. Use Shisha Orange low and let the Orange Cream sit for 1-2 weeks.
FLV Tangerine and INW Shisha Orange- the FLV is bright and pops yet has some nice depth
FLV Blood Orange and VT Orange Marmalade- as both are accurate to what they claim to be.
FW Blood Orange and VT Blood Orange Champagne
