Is it ok to add flavor to a DIY juice after it has steeped?
submitted over 5 years ago by capthollow

So I just started doing DIY ejuice mixing. So I did my first mixing and on testing I felt that my nicotine amount was higher then it should have been and to solve that mixed in 20ml to my mix without realising that i had a sore throat/flu and due to which i couldn't taste the juice proper though I very well knew that doing that would mean that I would be missing out like 2ml of flavor which was suggested.

What I mean is, I mixed in 100ml bottle which required 10% of flavor which I added.. then added 20ml PG later on making the mix from 60vg and 40pg to 50/50 very well knowing that doing that i will hv to fill in another 2ml of flavor which I didn't have at the time but I was like this is just gonna degrade the flavor a little if anything... now that my flu is over and the juice has steeped I realise that the juice tastes like a fade of the flavor that it should be. I ordered more flavor yesterday and will receive in a couple of days.

The question now remains, can I add another 2ml of flavor to the juice?

Yes, I do it randomly to test batches all the time and let it steep for 1/4 time. Shaking a few times daily to ensure a good blend.

Thanks... that would save the 120ml from just sitting there on the shelve and me realising how i fucked up when ever I lay my glance on it lol

Steeping just ensures that all of the ingredients are thoroughly mixed and bonded...

Adding another ingredient might make for some hotspots in a bottle for that ingredient, but it won't hurt anything.

It’s all good, I do crazy shit at times and randomly add 5-10 drops of something into something like Dragonfruit into a Grape steeped juice and shake and bake it n the spot.

Came up with some heavenly mixes by accident that way. Caramel cream Camel 99 cigarette flavored juice that just floored me.

Menthol to me is nice but adding the slightest to anything always seems to be way too much. No gray area from my experience

Haha the thing I do sometimes is get 0mg 50/50 shake and bake juice, dilute it with vg to reach 30/70 and add a few DIY flavors on top to make up for the flavor loss.

Or I'll try adding one or two flavors in commercial ejuice if I have some I'm not a fan of.

That caramel cream and camel 99 sounds very interesting - will be giving that a try :)

The thing with menthol (i use ws-23) it takes the longest to come out perfectly, but i always add them on my lychee, mango or one of my accidental favourites kiwi and strawberry with a hint of cream and light bubblegum nectar - its my favourite ADV at the moment along with vanilla custard (just love it) as almost on the same position closely followed by tobacco and wild spices topped with caramel and vanilla...

I started with a standard Hansen’s RY4 mix, added 1% Virginia Blend, 1% caramel, and .5% Vanilla Cream and upped the Nic content to like 18 using 48pg Nic for the bite.

Mixed at 60vg 40pg. Smooth at 4-6 days depending on amount ( I mix 100ml minimums) and this batch was 250ml because it was good to me.

Tastes may vary by device and wattage:

Nepho Tank & Mesh coil @65w air inlets at 1/2 draw.

Nice, will be experimenting this week :)

Btw i still can’t find the perfect nicotine level for myself.. currently at 5mg but scared going above 8 might be too harsh on a 0.8ohm mesh coil and 20 watts (using the breeze nxt).

Yes, you can always add more flavors to a mix...you just can't remove them (though you can dilute them by adding more base.)

When developing a recipe I'll often mix, taste, steep, taste again and then think of another flavor that might fit.

Seed steeping is a fairly similar technique. Although, to be honest, i didn't read everything because i'm just enough drunk. Adding flavor after the fact shouldn't harm anything but be aware that you can only add flavors to a mix, not remove them, so be careful.

At the end of the day you can do what ever your heart desires. But I am still trying to figure out how you got it to 50/50.

So after you added the 20ml of Propylene Glycol you the added 10ml of VG? Is that correct?

I originally mixed 60/40 (vg/pg) in a 100ml solution... but then i added 22ml pg to dilute the nicotine making the juice quantity 120ml and the ratio as 50/50. Now i also realise the nicotine is too low lol, i kind of like messed it up a bit - should have known better specially cause a cold/flu does affect your taste bud :(

Also do you write your formulas down or is it by memory and your winging it when you try and figure out the math as far as additions and such? Additions is synonymous with PG or Flavor(s).

Also how are you figuring out how much nicotine to add in order to have a 12% etc.?

One hot tip that will save you (steeping) time...Use an immersion blender(hand held) or a regular blender.

After you have your juice measured out in the vessel heat the juice up in the microwave just to bring it up to about 95-105 F.

Then mix it with either blender, trying to avoid air bubbles, on low. Mix it for at least 5 minutes.

Then add your nicotine and mix it again.

I've been experimenting with paint shakers at work. I swear it's a good thing for shake and vape recipes, but I'm not sure if it's actually a good idea for long term steepers. Any thoughts?

I have my formulas written down, tho when i experiment its usually just mixing this with that. I have tried a lot of tricks for fast steeping but have always gotten best results with the old store in the dark closet and shake a couple of times every day for 2 weeks giving me the best results, so i have setup my cycle like that - order my supplies with approximately 20 days before i run out of my last batch.

But thanks for the advise, appreciate it!

Between you and me alot of the BIG names like T Man and others sonicate meaning ultra sound for 45minutes. Same results as dark closet storage shaking daily for 2 weeks.

Wow - it sounds really interesting but I didn't understand what exactly it means?

Would love to give this a try if you can explain a little.

Not really. Unless you vape with no nicotine, you really need to ensure that your nicotine levels are consistent. Fluctuating nic levels are one of the tricks tobacco companies used to boost addiction. (Its a variant of a intermittent reward pattern.)

So not sure how to say this, new to mixing so mix a couple of lower nic recipes. The other night tested most of what I have mixed up including the lower nic recipes. I felt strangely satisfied afterwards and chalked it up to rapidly vaping 10 different types of ejuice in 45 minutes with a caliburn pod. The pod rapidly changes flavors so is perfect for testing if not into rda's. So is this the reward pattern thing at work?

Was thinking of switching over to lower nic by slowly just replacing the ejuice, but now second guessing it. Just jumping down a lvl from 6 to even 5.8 seems hard.

What percentage of nic did you use in your mixes?

6 and 5.8
