I've tried multiple different bases.
I have over 50 flavors and different kinds of sweeteners.
I've followed recipes to a T, including steeping time.
My SO and I have tried for a year to make *one* single vapable DIY bottle of juice...to no avail.
The flavor is either too light, and then becomes gross when more is added.
Or, it just tastes like straight mud.
I'm at a loss.
I didn't see anyone ask this yet, what type of device are you using specifically? I have been making my own juice for about a year and depending on what device of mine I use, a flavor can be great in one and awful in the other. I found fruity flavors seem to taste best on medium wattage (under 80) while creams and pastry like flavors seem to taste better the hotter you go.
Really stupid suggestion but I've heard great stories about people not being able to make a vapable bottle for months just because they never shake the flavors properly before mixing. Ever try shaking up the flavor bottle real good even if you're using the entire bottle, you probably are, but if you aren't you'll be surprised
What sort of profile do you tend to lean toward?
I *only* like fruit vapes. My current favorites are Reds Apple Berries, Pop! Vapors Apple, JuiceHead Blueberry Lemon, and Lemon Twist.
I’ve got a pretty good Reds Berries Iced clone. Never tried it without the WS-23 though
FA Fugi 4%
INW Two Apples 1%
CAP Doubke Apple 1%
FA Forest Fruit 3%
CAP Harvest Berry 1.5%
INW Shisha Strawberry 1.5%
FW Blueberry 1.5%
INW Cactus .5%
FA Pear .5%
FA Lemon Sicily .75%
WS-23 1.5%
CAP Super Sweet .5%
BLESS YOU. Reds Berries is my absolute favorite juice ever made. I've been devastated since they switched from the glass bottle to the plastic, as the flavor profile has changed. I don't know if I sound crazy, but it tastes like a commercial cleaner instead of the actual RAB vape juice. I will definitely be giving this a try without the WS.
I was really hoping I could help with a recipe tailored to your interests but I’m not very experienced in apple or lemon. Looks like this other fella got you covered though :)
Based on the amount of time you’ve been DIY I assume you’ve tried Prickly Victory? It’s a super simple recipe that’s packed with flavor. Sweet guava and cactus.
Also, if you’ve ever tried Mega (or Monster) Melons by Cuttwood, a very close recipe is:
5% TFA Cantaloupe
5% TFA Mango
3% TFA Papaya
This is prob my favorite DIY recipe I’ve used so far, although I have 3 different recipes of strawberry nesquik steeping that I’m SUPER hyped to try out.
I’ve been trying to find a solid clone for Skwezed Green Apple. That is one of my two fav commercial juices and from what I’ve read, people can’t seem to come very close. If you are living in a state without a ban, I highly recommend you try it. I’m going to start working on a clone for that one myself with the next order I put in.
I also almost only vape fruit vapes.
My current two favorite recipes are:
- Philipine Mango (TPA)
- Mango (Flavorah)
- Sweet Strawberry or Strawberry Ripe
- Raspberry (INAWERA) // Just a tiny bit as it's powerfull, 0.5% max
2nd recipe:
- Apple (Tart Green Apple) (TPA)
- Blueberry Extra (TPA) (0.5%)
- Fuji Apple (FA)
- Peach (Flavorah)
- Shisha Strawberry (INAWERA)
Sometimes I add Bavarian Cream, tastes more creamy but coil get's faster brown and needs more frequent changes.
Forest Fruit I find too harsh.
Are you trying 10 MLS at first it's the easiest to measure out? And I usually do 0 nic for testing. You can add flat pg base in its place.
No! I'm trying with 60ml bottles, so I am creating a lot of waste. 10ml is a great suggestion. I should move it down.
I started at 60 just because I wanted to create a full bottle and thought I would be able to add flavor/modify mixes that I'm making...but that clearly isn't the case. There is a point where you can just go too far.
>I started at 60 just because I wanted to create a full bottle and thought I would be able to add flavor/modify mixes that I'm making...but that clearly isn't the case.
That's actually more reason to start with small batches to test before ramping up to 60ml, is you can modify any size mix but if you have to modify 60ml vs 10ml, you're potentially wasting 6x more supplies.
Could you give us an example of a recipe you've tried (exact ingredients, percentages) and how you went about mixing it (steps, exact measurements)?
Here is one that I use from DIY or DIE. I've tried to play around with this recipe quite a bit and it tastes NOTHING like Reds Apple. Maybe it's just me?
https://diyordievaping.com/2018/05/22/reds-apple-ejuice-clone/
I also tried to use this base to turn it into Reds Apple Berries. Supposedly, Reds Berries is just Forest Berries added into the base apple mix. Nope, that hasn't worked either.
You're correct, that recipe isn't even remotely close to Reds. Wayne is not good at cloning and doesn't have tastebuds anywhere near as good as he pretends, that's why his clones are "remixes" so he can excuse the inaccuracy..
I have an apple recipe that took me over a year of obsessive wastefulness, cause I was aiming to recreate the taste of biting into a fresh apple. It's considerably different than Reds, because it's more realistic and more like an actual apple instead of apple juice. Reds is more like a sweet apple juice blend in comparison.
I'm not willing to give away the recipe in its full form, but if you're interested I'll give you a slimmed down version that will likely taste much closer to what you're looking for.
You weighing or using syringes?
Weighing on a digital scale
Weighing is absolutely fine. No need to be concerned with specific weights and such. Firstly because many recipes have been created with a scale instead of by volume. Secondly because the difference in specific weight between flavors is neglible, and not going to ruin the juice. I personally overdrip by a larger margin than weighing inaccuracies.
Huge mistake, way to much to keep up with weighing. Keep it simple! Have you gone to e liquid recipe dot Com? Lots of proven recipes to make on there. Also has a good data base of flavors from different companies.
What gear (hardware) are you vaping with?
I change back and forth between the VooPoo Drag 2 and the Smok I-Priv for my box mods.
I always use the Dead Rabbit Hellvape RDA, and Cotton Bacon Prime to wick.
I also have the Goon, Drop and Profile RDAs but I don't like them as much as my DRH.
I have the Smok Prince TFV12 tank but never use it. I'm pretty much an RDA-or-nothing kind of girl.
Staying hydrated does make a massive difference in taste for me. Also, smelling coffee grounds when you notice things aren't tasting right helps 'reset' your olfactory. https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/175889#pink_punch_lemonade_clone_by_denske this lemon twist clone is delicious, just in case you haven't come across it yet
This might be another silly question as I see you are mixing by weight and following recipes to a "T" but what ejuice calculator are you using, and do you have the settings right on the calculator? I always use ejuicemeup and found that in the beginning my settings were off a bit. I adjusted the "grams set" function in the tools and the VG/PG ratio, and strength and type of my nicotine, and set it as default so that every time I open it, it's set to my preferences.
Are you steeping your mixes?
I've tried both steeping them via a length of time, as well as a warm water bath around the bottle. I save everything I make and try vaping them again a few weeks to a month later.
Did you see my comment about commercial juice? I only ask because when I first started mixing I got major vapours tongue. I think because I was getting used to not having the same level of sweetener (although that is only my theory). Apparently it’s fairly common for people to get vapours tongue on and off for the first year or so of mixing.
I was thinking maybe if your still vaping commercial stuff with lots of sweetener you’re never adjusting to not having it? I dunno, it’s just a theory and maybe I’m totally wrong.
I remember being really disappointed with everything I mixed, both highly rated recipes and my own mixes for ages. I couldn’t understand how everyone else was able to pick out this subtle notes in flavours. But it did get better.
What really helped was to single flavour test similar flavours together (for example a few custards from different manufacturers) and write notes in the differences between them. It helped train my palate a bit more. I’m not saying I have the best palate now but I’m working on teaching myself to critically evaluate flavour etc. concrete river wrote an article on here that really helped me. I’ll find it and try to link it.
Maybe my theory is totally wrong and none of this is any help to you whatsoever. But maybe have a look at the article?
I can’t work out how to link it sorry- it’s called FAQ Friday: Single Flavor Testing (There’s a part 1 and part 2)
>I *only* like fruit vapes. My current favorites are Reds Apple Berries, Pop! Vapors Apple, JuiceHead Blueberry Lemon, and Lemon Twist.
Honestly, that could also possibly be it. I *only* like fruit vapes. My current favorites are Reds Apple Berries, Pop! Vapors Apple, JuiceHead Blueberry Lemon, and Lemon Twist. I get CONSTANT vapor's tongue. Like I can grab a bottle of a commercial juice that I haven't had in two months, and on the first day of vaping it, I'll already have vapor's tongue.
Most of the commercial vapes that I buy are fruity, so they have a lot of sweetener in them. Adding sweetener to the DIY mixes I make just turns them into a muddled mess.
How did you get rid of your vapor's tongue? I typically just brush my teeth or use a mouthwash, but it still remains. It's becoming really frustrating.
I definitely need to take notes on individual flavors. I have probably 8 bottles of different red apple flavors, and they are all incredibly different. I always forget which one is which, or which one I prefer.
Thank you for the link! I'm checking it out now!
Most recipes online are garbage. Get 2 or 3 of the flavours that you like, mix them in a 10 ml bottle (as stated before) Use https://e-liquid-recipes.com/ to make your recipes (It'll give you an average % to use) and don't bother steeping because that's a lot of crap and I don't care what anyone else thinks about that comment.
I thought the same about steeping too when I started mixing but it’s wrong. Steeping has relevance, albeit more so for richer and more complex mixes (custards, cheesecakes, creams, tobaccos). If you are just using fruits, the effect of steeping is not quite as significant, but the balance of the different fruit flavours in the mix does change over time. To address your other point- most recipes on line are not garbage. This applies only to ELR in my experience, where anyone can make any recipe public. ELR aside, most recipes that I have seen published are usually pretty good.
