DIY juice spitting unlike commercial juices
submitted almost 6 years ago by throwmeawayamlost

Didn’t see anything specifically speaking to this on a search so thought I’d post for advice.

I’ve noticed my DIY ~80/20 is spitting back at me a lot more than when I used some commercial juice (70/30) again temporarily last week.

This coil is getting a little old so perhaps it’s that?

I’m vaping on a Horizon Falcon (OG) tank with prebuilt coils at 75W. Seems better at 75 than say 70 but still happens from time to time. No real popping noise just spitting into the roof of my mouth and not fun.

Is this generally a coil/cotton issue or a VG/PG issue?

I’m going to continue to DIY but notice this a lot more with my own juice than commercial juices (could be I have used DIY longer than commercial at this point, too).

TIA

Usually it's an atomizer issue. I don't get spitback either with full VG or common 70/30 stuff

Yeah I only get spit from bad attys. Turning up the wattage a bit usually helps, and don't pull as hard on the inhale.

You could also lay your tank on a paper towel with the air flow face down and see if any juice pools. Over time, the heat and juice will shrink the cotton, allowing more to seep through.

If none of those work, I just pop in a new one.

This made me consider blowing into the vape while firing to get that juice out. Sure enough all three air holes spat some juice. Flavor was better and didn’t get spitting for a while after that.

Coil’s going though, I can taste the burn.

Sounds about right. You have to turn up the wattage to vape the extra juice, while also accelerating the death of your coil.

I either have this issue, or a coil that never tastes burnt, but ends up leaking half the tank's volume.

Not necessarily true. The key is to get your coils to the right temperature quickly. For temperature control devices you can increase the wattage, or use a boost (the proper name is escaping me atm) feature to get the coil the fastest.

Spitback is generally caused by not fully vaporizing the e liquid. It's usually a combination of wicking and power. If you make 80/20 and buy 70/30, you've got 10% more VG to deal with. Since you have little control over wicking in a stock coil tank, turn up the power a little or replace the coil.

Yeah it's not DIY or commercial ejuice that's doing it. Usually I'd say wicking and or what kind of wire. Then I seen it's a subohm tank. I never really had too much of an issue with spit back in subohm tanks especially my falcons which are what I prefer if I decide to sub tank. But I'm gonna guess that maybe you're using one of the F series coils. F1 was the only one I'd use in a pinch if the M's weren't available. But the word I was always told is the F series coils are super spitty. If it's not that just install a new coil. Best of luck!

Ironically it’s an M1 coil. I’m finding I prefer the singles over the M-Triple. Unfortunately the triple is all I have left on hand so I’m going to switch to my RTA for now.

It’s a bitty baby one (Gear) but maybe I’m ready to permanently switch to RTA life.

Maybe it's just old. I liked the M1, M2 and the M-Dual in the king. I've honestly been loving the new Intake Dual RTA. It's just Awesome. I always kinda veered from RTA's but I use this one all the time. Thinking about the Blotto and the Zeus X. I'm just really satisfied with the intake Dual. I hope you find your happy zone. It can be frustrating sometimes. I started mixing again and I'm glad I did. I did a few years back but got lazy and went back to commercial and I do appreciate their service but sooooo much sucralose. Cheers!

Yep! My husband complains all the time how quickly his coils get burnt out with commercial juices but still hasn’t bought into my DIY take. The sweeteners really do make a difference. Maybe when he gets tired of paying so much per bottle he’ll take me up on it.

.. and what is your flavoring content and nic type and strength? Any other contents?

Just under 3 mg/mL nic (VG), 11.5% flavors. Just that and PG, VG.

Shouldn't have any problems with that, only ideas are your juice is too thin, or your atty is making it bubble from being flooded or not enough power, again thin juice would be more likely to flood the atty and if youre in a hot climate. I usually keep my juices around 50/50
