All The Flavors Outage - apologies!
submitted almost 6 years ago by queuetueAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

Hi, all. Most of you know I run All The Flavors at a loss, and I kick in a few bucks from my pocket every month to keep it running - I keep that in a savings account for the purpose, and as it dips down and I fill it back every month.

Unexpectedly, this month - either because of a large number of people quitting the platform, or a large number of new free users spiking server usage, I'm really not sure - instead of 20 or 50 bucks, the deficit was over 200 USD, which the little savings account wasn't set up to handle, the account went negative and the site got shut off.

I've transferred over funds from my personal account to handle it, but it may take 24 hours for them to show up, in the meanwhile, ATF will be down for the duration. Let me know at scott@alltheflavors.com or here on reddit if there's anything in reason I can do to make up for the outage.

- Scott (Queuetue)

Edit: The funds have transferred faster than expected, ATF should be back up now. Please let me know if you notice any additional issues.

>anything in reason I can do to make up for the outage

just be more active. even if your reply to things are "hey i'm busy rn sorry" that's better than total radio silence. that silence makes days like today really hectic. what if i needed to mix my adv today and didn't have it memorized, and rely on the site being avaliable to mix? i mean when there's no response back. its like i'm talking to eightvape's customer service. everythings fine as long as there's no problem, and that's a big problem. especially if you're taking money and providing a service. where's the service? just access to the mostly working website you've already made, and anything else you have to do is just taxing extra stuff that you have to be persueded into doing?

i also don't get why you've turned down several people offering to help you keep the site going. without you active, there's not much the people who do help can do.

either kick up a notch, maybe fix some of the things that aren't working, or implement a new feature? i'm sure there are plenty of suggestions out there. or just give the reigns over to someone that will.

How could me being more vocal in the past fix today's issue? I didn't have enough cash in an account. As soon as I discovered it, I set it on the track to be fixed, and then I came here and announced it publicly. How would spending more time on Discord help you?

you may have had a few more subs, and this wouldn't have happened at all. maaaaaybe. 'i run this at a loss' feels like a guilt trip, it feels like you're trying to use this as a way to make it look like you're doing us a favor. you're the one who started the site. . . i would assume because you wanted to provide something good for people to use who didn't like what else was(or wasn't) out there. . i wanna say show someone the math of how this is costing you that much out of pocket(don't, i'm not trying to out you like that), maybe someone can help you cut some costs or something somewhere, if that really is the case. because in my head, this just isn't adding up. i readily admit that there could be things to the cost of running the site that i'm not thinking about. but i've ran servers. probably nothing as traffic heavy as this, but i have. its really discouraging to hear the people who help you with stuff say "we can't fix it because we haven't been able to get ahold of him in a while", while a "hey he knows about it, he's really busy and will get to it asap" could go a long way in not making you look like some "look ma no hands" site admin. personally its just not what i'd expect out of someone running something like this. but you've prooven that you're gonna do what you're gonna do. you're going to appear when the site goes down, and keep it up, and it really doesn't look like much else without being hounded to the gates of hell. i guess the people that you take money from aren't worth interacting with at all, we're just causing you to have to run a site at a loss by wanting to use it, right? if it really is impossible to run the site without it being a loss, maybe its time to re-think stuff and figure out how to make it at the very least, break even. but just raising sub prices and providing no actual service other than what currently goes on, i highly suggest not doing.

one example of not fixing or at least answering something is the CSV backup option for recipes, is it broken? or does it not work if you have a ton of recipes or something? i've asked this a few times, and not gotten an answer, because i assume you're the only one that's going to know that, and ya haven't cared to respond to it in the chat(or even read it for all i know).

Helmet , you've made me aware that I'm playing a sympathy card I wasn't even aware of, so I'll avoid that in the future. I was using it to pre-empt the "how could anyone be so incompetent that ..." and your point that I was hiding behind it is a good one. If I'm not willing to open up my company's books to the public, then I shouldn't point out just the part that makes me look like a martyr. Thanks for calling me on that, and please do so in the future, it's a cheap tactic, and no one has ever asked me to put a single penny into the site, griping about my own volunteerism for sympathy is somewhat pathetic of me.

That being said, ATF was and is an experiment, as hinted to by others in this thread. The "paywall" popularized isn't very high, from a paying perspective - it's simply a speedbump intended by the people (from this community) that originally conceived the site.

ATF's intended light exclusivity was a counterpoint to ELR's chaos - by forcing people to have skin in the game to participate, would we wind up with more signal vs noise? By having one repository at each end of the spectrum, would we be able to serve the entire community? This certainly wasn't planned in concert with daath, but we would have one site supported by ad revenue from the majority of the activity, chaotic and raw and easy and cheap, and another supported directly by the users by forking over cash for access and exposure and participation.

So, yes, the limits of the paywall do force exclusion, but the revenue of the paywall was not intended to provide a funding source. If I were looking for a better funding source, I'd be marketing to the non-DIY market and chasing down the banned states and I'd update the copy on my "go pro" page to add more fluff - and I'd raise the price considerably, or choose partners based on kickbacks and not based on involvement.

I don't claim to be a genius at this model, nor do I regularly actively suggest anyone join ATF at the pro level. I give out free accounts to most people who ask - certainly to anyone who gives back to the community in any way - since that also serves the same speedbump purpose - if you're willing to contact me and ask nicely, you're probably not paying unless you choose to support the site.

Support of the site from *my* end is a similar story ... I maintain what works, do the basic support required for people that are really clueless, provide a basic daily admin to keep it humming, but haven't put much effort in recent history into replacing things that were decommissioned, or developing new features. The only excuse is that I have a lot of projects I work on, ATF is only one of them. Other than my demanding day job, I split my remaining time across many different efforts including several companies, a handful of apps, the occasional consulting gig, volunteer work, maintaining a pre-WWII farm and always learning or building something new. The slice of time ATF gets has got less and less effective as the surface area of the project got larger.

That's not healthy for a project, and the sickness certainly shows - in site uptime and stagnation and in how a vocal segment of the community reacts. You want more, and you want better, and you want it your way, and I hear you. There is also a vocal (generally private) segment of the community that's highly supportive and happy with the site the way it is, and an overwhelming majority (10,000:1, I'd say) that just USE the site, generally for free, and never contact me at all, and I have no idea what they think of it.

I love you all, in my ridiculous and childish and abusive way - especially you bunch who push me to be better for the sake of the greater community or even for my own benefit. But wanting it to be better, even offering to put forth some effort to make it better, even offering specific opinions and skills ... doesn't make it immediately better. In fact, the downtime of vetting and training someone to "work for" ATF or building the tools that someone trusted would use to do additional admin ... this is additional time I need to put aside, for little return, since I can't incentivize anyone to continue in a role without rethinking the economics and security protocols of the site.

All that said, I have not solved anything with this little rant, I realize. But I hope I have pointed out the issues as I see them and my opinions of the stakeholders - and at least a little of the stakes involved. It's a cliche, but ATF is a labor of love and it's a lot more labor and a lot more love than I was expecting when I started it.

/u/queuetue Avoiding this response and going radio silence will be the factor for me that causes me to not renew. Many of us feel this way.

You've pumped up the prices to keep funding what simply cannot be an expensive server; if you're copping $200USD a month for this, you need to consider another provider. It's deeply stagnant - you're sure not getting new customers, and you're haemorrhaging existing ones that are sick of waiting. I refuse to cop that loss.

  • You've locked people reviewing and commenting on flavours behind a paywall, so your site sorely lacks useful information and community interaction. We are better off sifting through ELR or threads on reddit or forums.

  • Flavor tags have never worked. This gets asked for constantly. I understand it's difficult to implement.

  • For some reason, flavor stash sharing is considered a premium feature? Text isn't large or intensive in terms of data or processing.

  • TWO private recipes is a joke. If people want to earn fame posting their popular public mixes, then sure, take a cut. But I'm not allowed to track my revisions to my personal ADV?

  • Since the format of order reciepts from all the vendors have changed, none of the import from email functions work.

  • We were largely ignored, and then lied to 7 months ago when we raised this point. You blew off and ignored people that offered you help. You refuse to sell the site, despite whinging about it costing you money, and clearly lacking motivation for the project.

  • Your last post on your Facebook page was 2017, but you're still advertising the 'Awesome Box' to people, with a link that goes nowhere. Same deal with the little burst of 5 videos you briefly put out 2 years ago.

I'm sorry you lost your job a few months ago - that sucks. But this has been going for close to two years in this state. Seemingly, someone has to really harrass you to get anywhere.

Complaining that you can't get anything done becuase you've made the codebase unusable by anybody else is not an excuse, that's poor design and documentation. I'd not get too hung up on evaluating the credentials of others, if that's the case...

Likewise, saying you're 'too busy' to inteact with your community is a sign that you probably DO need some more admins.

I used to tell people that ELR was full of newbies mixing SS/WS23 and calling it a 'clone', but I can't defend ATF anymore. I'm aware my tone is coming off as entitled and accusatory, but at this point, this is the way I feel.

The people that aren't bothered are poor newbies that have just accepted things; and the frustrated people are the ones that tried to help you months ago.

People this is why you put your shit in a notebook, composition book or whatever. Zero reliance on anyone else. Mix by candlelight if need be.

I keep my notes, recipes and inventory offline. I just use ATF to see what I can make.

It's really easy. You just import your flavor sta...oh wait, you can't because it's been broken for ages.

you have a very valid(but annoying) point. lol

What exactly is annoying about it? People need to stop relying on so much on technology. I flip to the appropriate page and mix. No calculator or website needed. All weight quantities done in my head.

I see that there seems to be some personal beefs here, but I don't really care. Thank you for what you do and your accessible website.

After being a free user for a couple months, I became a member last month. So it wasn't my fault, lol.

Jesus! I tried to open the page a couple time and was coming to reddit to understand what’s going on. I am one of the new paying users. A bit upset cause I was going to make new batches today and despite I always right down my recipes, the last ones I was trusting only the page. But if you are saying tomorrow everything will come back, it’s all blue.

I’m really sorry to hear the community is not anymore giving some pennies a day to use that interesting platform. I love it. Hope we gather to return it to normality. Best wishes

Perhaps there's a reason people are unsubbing?

3 points

by Kau_barrosalmost 6 years ago

What would that reason be? I don’t hear much about the complains... but I’ve only been into diy for 7 month and I’m not quite a discord reader.

6 points

by Kittybit8almost 6 years agoI found my thrill on ID10-T’s hill

The fact that we not many months ago set up a task force to fix ATF, had a private discord connected, a god damn road map planned out of things tat needed to be fixed and features to be added made by this VERY SAME community, Q still managed to vanish in thin air, leaving the ship to sink.

If he had been sticking around, actively participating in the work where the community DID gather, for more than 2 damn days, then maybe there would be more paying customers and this crap wouldn't happen.

I'm sorry to say it, but we have tried to fix it, even when the complaints were at its highest, but it's hard to fix something when the creator slips you the finger and vanishes.

Maybe I'm missing something everyone else knows but if what you have said is all true then it seems really mean that people are giving you shit for it. I'm a paying user and understand that shit happens.

by helmet648almost 6 years agoDelightfully Mediocre

5 months of total silence in a discord channel used to communicate with him is okay? even the people who are part of "his team" can't get ahold of him half the time it seems. and without him doing stuff they can't do some of the more important things, like getting a new flavor brand added, etc

7 points

by queuetuealmost 6 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

I mentioned this above, but people call me and email me all the time, my contact info is on the site (when it's up and elsewhere in this thread.). I don't hang out in discord, mainly because I have a very busy job that takes up most of my attention - I can't spare to keep an eye on Discord and FB.

If you want me, I'm not hard to reach, I just may not do it the way you want, that doesn't make me absent.

O: had no idea. Funny thing is that ATF is the most decent mixing platform I used until now... it should have more than one administrator over there so somebody could put a bit more love into it. I’m really sorry to hear the reality, folks

We have tried to get him to either give up the reigns and let someone who gives a crap run the site. This he refuses. We have tried to offer him help through administration. This he refuses.

It's hard to muster up whatever little trust there is left sadly.

Who has offered to take up the reigns? Send them and a sample of their work my way, and I'd be willing to discuss it. I don't remember refusing any such thing - but feel free to paste some conversations in here to remind me.

I have been overall, unable to use the site as well as ELR. I don't pay for either. I'm not against paying for something I'm using, and I don't really care that 99.5% of recipes on ELR are not good- it just seems stupid easy to use.

What am I missing? I want to be cool too.

> I don't really care that 99.5% of recipes on ELR are not good-

Its true and I've come to terms with that. When new mixers show up it seems that the active posters here steer everyone to ATF. Like ELR is worthless or something.. I'll let you know something about ATF.. There's plenty of incredibly average to shitty recipes there too. Even the popular ones on the front page are just more of the same. They're very popular, overrated, incredibly average tasting mixes to me. I'm not some flavor wiz and claim I can do so much better. I just think there's shitty recipes everywhere. I don't use ATF because I refuse to be shaken down. That site that only works when it wants to.

If there was indeed a spike in users, I wonder how my not that is attributed to folks like me who live in a state that just banned flavors. I know I’ve been using the site quite a bit.
