Versatile/Starter Flavors
submitted almost 6 years ago by TriggerMuch

Hey so Ive looked at some of the flavors recommended in the noobie post, but Im just looking for some more personalized recommendations. Im looking to start out cheap and see how it goes, before really investing into this hobby. Hoping that I can get a start on this for less than 50$, including hardware, but am willing to spend a bit more if thats needed

Can you guys help me get a list of "necessary" flavors to try out that will be versatile for many different blends? I usually vape fruity/candy ejuice (apple, mango, limeade, blueberry slushie etc, anything but strawberry), and occasionally a dessert flavor if its easy on coils. I know that I'll need the fruit flavors like apple, mango, etc for these, but I'd like to have different tones to the juice too so its not super straightforward.

Ive looked at a few recipes but as a beginner its still hard to tell which flavors will be a "one time use", vs something I can incorporate in everything

- As for hardware if you have links to cheap reliable hardware, or starter DIY kits that save money, those would be appreciated too

UPDATE: I've realized im going to just have to pick a few recipes that look good and learn to understand how flavors work on their own, and only after that will I be able to know which flavors will be versatile for my flavor profile. I also found that e-liquid calculator has a program that logs all of the flavors you own, and uses only those to find recipes you can create. You can find this here after creating an account https://e-liquid-recipes.com/whatcanimake

"My First Order" Flavors

There's a lot more info in the sidebar, you should really read it

Why is cactus in the number 1 spot? Is it like graham cracker, where it just gets used in everything?

Not sure how the rankings work but cactus is a damn useful flavor. u/id10-t can probably explain how it's #1

It's in the number 1 spot because people voted to put it there.

Some people love it, some people hate it. But it finds its way into a ton of recipes because it gives them a wet, juicy feel.

I realize people voted for it, It’s just something I’ve never used. I’ll add it to my list of juices to try out. I do a lot of desserty flavors, so it makes sense I’ve never come across it.

You say personalized recommendations, but then all you give us is fruit/candy and sometimes desserts.

Based off of that, there could still be a tonnnnnn of recommendations. Your best bet is to always look at alltheflavors for popular recipes that look good to you and buy flavors for those recipes. OSDIY Blue Razz Slush is probably my favorite candy type flavor now but it’s not used in a whole lot of recipes. FA Fuji Apple is a great Apple, but we don’t know if you like Apple.

If you give us a bit more to go on, maybe we can help, but right now, we just don’t have enough info on what you’re looking for

Right, I guess its hard to know what to mention before I've really given it a go. I was just thinking that theres a certain sweetener commonly used in fruit candy blends for example. Ive edited my post a bit now.

Typically I enjoy any fruity/candy flavor, except strawberry. So apple sourbelts, blue slushie, mango blends, jolly rancher etc. Would you recomend that I focus more on one blend at a time rather than finding flavors that will all be useful in the future? For example just starting out with whats needed for, lets say an apple jolly rancher juice, and then shop again later if Id like to try out a blue slushie mix?

you're going to have to take some chances and see what works for you.. flavor is subjective. that said, we're talking a couple dollars a pop so your risk is pretty damn low compared to buying a whole bottle of commercial juice without getting to try it.

my advice is to go to alltheflavors.com, sort by popular or highest rated recipe, and look at the reviews until you find a few that sound good to you, then buy the ingredients you need to make it.

I started about 2 months ago and that has worked out great. It takes time but eventually you start to get a good feel for what you like and how to build something you like.

Also fuck it here's my #1 rec: Forest Fruit. If I don't know what to make, 3% fa forest fruit, 2% tfa wild blueberry, 1% fe lemon. I like fruit and I've never gotten sick of it so there's my blind suggestion.

Yeah thanks, the other guy in this thread helped me realize all that too. Im browsing the recipes right now actually. Just going to pick a few n learn what I can about the singular flavors as I go. That rec looks pretty good, Ill have to check it out

If nobody else responds before tomorrow, I’d be happy to offer some recommendations. I’m not at my computer right now though, so hard to type a detailed response atm

Please don't take what I will say as a direct critique, I mean no offense.

DIYing requires quite a bit of research. The subreddit's sidebar features a lot of the aforementioned research available and should be read. Has all you need scale wise, weight vs volume wise, first order wise et cetera. Take a while and read up on it all. It's all good info

by TriggerMuchalmost 6 years ago

No offense taken, I dont want to seem like that guy that hasnt done any research before coming to ask questions.

I have a pretty good grasp on how to calculate percentages and mix properly, and what equipment I'll need to start. But links to cheap yet reliable bottles/pg/vg/nic would be nice

My only real trouble has been trying to find flavors versatile enough that they wouldnt become a waste/only useful in one recipe (but I supposed thats just me being a bit stingy lol)

It's alright, vape juice is such a broad topic that as much as we want to help, some specifics would help us help you!

Vg and pg are mostly the same cheap price everywhere. Highly recommend one purchase of 0.5l and from there on gallon worths which you'll transfer to the used 0.5l bottles for ease.

Nic can't help much since UK based.

Pink guava and my peppermints are my most flexible flavours.

FLV pink guava is so good on its own, but also with some peppermints. Well worth the harsh price tag! It's a very unique and interesting flavour.

FLV peppermint for candy style childish peppermint. It's great 0.25% for a candy vape and 0.45% for a greener peppermint.

FA peppermint feels super natural and proper to me.

CAP peppermint has a really good feel. Apparently it has some oils? I have never felt their effects but I must warn.

Buy glass bottles for maximum reusability. I use 7x 100ml, 5x 50ml and a few 30ml for concentrate holding. I fill them to 9/10 capacity so there's space to shake em up. Get caps for each bottle, get spare caps in case of flavours which stick (Pink Guava STICKS!), get a few spare glass dripper tubes and you're all set. Cleanup is easy peasy with a bigger bowl or tupperware filled with the disassembled emptied bottles + glass drippers and boiling water.

Thank you for the detailed response! I read a review on the pink guava and it sounds interesting. I think what I've learned is I just have to focus more on already made recipes for now, and once I am more comfortable with how flavors taste on their own Ill be able to buy ones that I think will compliment eachother.

You think flavors for 3-5 recipes would be a good start? I just realized how cheap the flavor itself is lmao, I thought they would get you with the shipping price.

Think I've almost got everything I need to know now, but is storing flavors in glass bottles needed? Or it that more for people with dozens of flavors in big quantities? I feel like the 10ml bottle/tube they ship it in should be good enough to start, and just using glass bottles for the mixtures

I did a little programming side project where I pulled all recipes from alltheflavors, sorted out all the rated recipes and basically run a program that determined which 30 aromas (or 20, dont remember exactly) will let you mix the most recipes. I got somewhere around 68 rated recipes that you could make with a particular combination of 30 aromas.

I think I have the solutions somewhere. I might look for it if anyone is interested. Though it will only be aromas and not recipes because I was to lazy to do the other part.

I was planning on posting it here on this sub but I just forgot about it and you have reminded me because my goal was to optimize first buy flavors to get most out of them.

Anyways whats good with this is that you can manipulate the data to get different results. For an example you can remove all recipes and leave only fruit ones if thats what you prefer.

Thatd be perfect, thats exactly the type of information I was hoping someone would have. Post it here or send me a DM when you get the chance to look for it

Here's the link to the spreadsheet. Link

It was for 30 aromas. I think youll have around 90 (62 of those are rated) possible recipes on alltheflavors once you plug in all of them in it.

ELR website flavor list sorted by # of uses. Anything on the first page is versatile. Strawberry ripe TFA should be #1

All the flavors in this recipe, Sesame Street Gangbang, are versatile and can be used in various ways. Click on the ones that interest you and browse other recipes on the site to see if you find mixes you want to make.

Second what everyone else has said. I would go through the sidebar links, come up with a list of flavors that looks good to you (find some recipes that look good and get those flavors), and then post the list for critique. The “first order flavors” link is nice, but it isn’t the end all be all.

I picked these since they all seem to be quality on their own, and would be versatile enough to make some simple fruit/candy/creamy blends. Is there anything else you think I should add to create more depth? Or should this be good enough to start

Bavarian Cream (TPA), Blue Raspberry Slush (OSDIY), Blueberry (FW), Blueberry Extra (TPA), Cinnamon Danish Swirl v1 (Cap), Double Apple (Cap), Dragonfruit (TPA), Fuji Apple (FA), Grapes (Inawera), Kiwi (FA), Lemon Sicily (FA), Pomegranate (FA), Raspberry (Malina) (Inawera), Sour (TPA), Strawberry (Ripe) (TPA), Super Sweet (Cap), Vanilla Swirl (TPA), Vienna Cream (FA)

I’ve heard good things about all of them. I have only tried the Strawberry Ripe, INW Raspberry, TPA Dragonfruit, and the FA Fuji Apple. They are all great. I’d add some INW Cactus (makes fruits a bit more juicy at .25-0.5%), and some INW Grapefruit just cause it is my favorite current flavor. Vanilla Swirl is on my next order cause everyone raves about it. Tbh you can’t really go wrong with mixing up those fruits though! I’d just start at low %’s and work your way up. You can always add more. Also, make like 10-15ml batches the first 4-5 times you mix. That way you don’t waste any flavors. You mixing by weight?

1 points

by TriggerMuchalmost 6 years ago

Alright ill add those to my list too, I was thinking about adding a regular lemon flavor as well for a tart lemony background to some of the fruit. Really excited about this list and all the future possibilities of mixing! And yes ill be mixing by weight, Ill probably buy the LB-501 (think thats the version) since it seems to be the most popular around ejuice DIY.

Sadly I probably wont be buying any of these supplies for a few weeks though cuz I just ordered like 900ml of commercial ejuice off a public wholesale site. Want to atleast use some of those up before I fill my room up with even more vape supplies lmao

e-liquid-recipes.com

Go here and pick out some recipes that look good to you and only have 2-4 simple flavors. By simple, I mean common things (graham cracker, cherry, vanilla, tobacco) that fit your preferred flavor profile. Alternatively, pick a premium juice you like and see if you can find the clone. My ADV is the grandmaster clone of the five pawns flavor.

I’d join the discord and post in the check my order please channel. link

Aside from that, I’m not the best fruit guy but I’d say add fa forest fruit and a 30ml of LA lemonade. Look up best damn pink lemonade on atf by vurve and (much better imo) backwoods lemonade by u/edible_malfunction. Can sub Fa lemon Sicily for FE lemon. Fa fades and FE lasts through a steep.

My app keeps crashing so I’ll be quick. 3rd times the charm. Vienna needs a week steep so be patient. Cds can have off notes, you’ll want to deepen that bench later but not my area much.

Watch noted episodes on some flavors: Double check difference between inw raspberry and shisha raspberry. Difference between tfa pomegranate and Fa pomegranate and Fa pomegranate deluxe.

Consider adding (or file away for future order): ws23, menthol and/or polar blast. Lime! Inw custard (good intro and short steeper). Cactus (goes well with fruit). Pear/starfruit/honeysuckle to sweeten rather than cap ss.

I’d probably ditch the sour. Never tried it but it probably isn’t sour. And I prefer Fw sweetener instead of cap.

I am note very experienced in mixing... but I'd recommend Fuji apple (FA) for fruits. Its the only flavor I am okay with in solo mix. Everything else tastes either like candy or perfume.

For desserts, I dunno, Bavarian cream (TPA)? RY4 double (TPA) is pretty good too.

Dude, desserts are easy on coils. Candy and your sweetener is gonna be your coil killer. You need Capella Super Sweet 120 ml. Wonder Flavors Sour Blue Raspberry, Capella 27 Bears, Capella Green Apple Hard Candy. That's a start. I like candy in real life. But that cloying, oversweetened garbage you're requesting isn't my strong suit.

Maybe thats the case in DIY juice, Ive only ever had consumer market brands and dessert has by far been the most consistent to gunk something up (cinnabombs, custards, chocolates you name it). I feel you with oversweetened bit, thats partly why ive decided to go into DIY. I like the candys but more-so when they have a nice tang, vs when its almost pure sweetener

2 points

by [deleted]almost 6 years ago

Maybe I took it the wrong way. Thought the first thing you asked about was which sweetener to buy. Add Flavorah Sour Apple to that list too then. Chocolates can wreak havoc on coils. But everything else you mentioned shouldn't. Because it doesn't need sweetener. Welcome aboatd.
