Come share your Philsoursopy on Custard Apples With Flavor of the Week!
submitted almost 6 years ago by ID10-TWinner: Best Recipe of 2019 - Counter Punch

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is.... CUSTARD APPLES (Cherimoya, Guanabana, Soursop, Paw Paw)!

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested!

If you're not interested in the upcoming FOTWs, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are basically video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

And you can find these and more in a comprehensive collection of Flavor Facts created by /u/OdieDoodah

Next week's flavor will be: Grape

The week after that will be: Blessed Trinities (Blueberry Trinity, Blackberry Trinity, Bourbon Trifecta, Cheesecake Trinity, Cake Trinity, Ice Cream Trinity, Lemonade Trinity, Mango Trinity, Peach Trinity, Daveberry Trinity)

The week after that will be: Jams

The week after that will be: 2019 Flavors of the Year

The week after that will be: Blackberry

The week after that will be: Orange

The week after that will be: Papaya

FLV Guanabana is fantastic. Check out this review by u/ConcreteRiver.

Check out Green Bastard by YippYo. Easily a 5-star recipe.

Just drafted this up after seeing the FotW - hoping to mix it up on the weekend. Was thinking VT FVIC for a quick shake n vape recipe - and replacing that with FA Custard Premium 1% if I can be bothered waiting for a steep.

Custard apple

Custard apple is a common name for a fruit, and the tree which bears it, Annona reticulata. The fruits vary in shape, heart-shaped, spherical, oblong or irregular. The size ranges from 7 centimetres (2.8 in) to 12 centimetres (4.7 in), depending on the cultivar. When ripe, the fruit is brown or yellowish, with red highlights and a varying degree of reticulation, depending again on the variety. The flesh varies from juicy and very aromatic to hard with a repulsive taste.

I'd wonder why anyone would want this, but then people keep mixing strawberry, peach, vanilla, and anise flavored things, so there's obviously a market for repulsive tasting...

Seems fitting to toss both of these here.

I've only come as close as drinking Jumex guanabana nectar and making mixed drinks with it. It tastes like FLV Guanabana.

Which of those was first to market, you wonder?

Ok, yes, it should be the other way around. FLV Guanabana tastes like Jumex guanabana nectar.

Used to eat them a lot in South America. Tricky to get all the large seeds out but they taste great particularly when combined with other flavours eg orange juice or white wine.

I've had fresh guanabana. I hate it with a passion. Too sweet, not enough sour... And the texture, oh boy. Lost its novelty in a couple minutes.

Not much for notes on this recipe. I literally had a buzz, sat in front on some new flavors, and grabbed these not having a clue what to expect. Tested alone, and added a little strawberry to give it a slightly flatter mouth feel. I really like the sweet, tropical, foriegn fruit vibe. Couldn't point a finger at a direct comparison here. Maybe star fruit or similar sweetness. Anyway, I dig it

| Flavor | Percentage |
|:-----------|------------:| | Cherimoya (Flavorah) | 1.5%|
| Guanabana (Flavorah) | 2%|
| Soursop (Flavorah) | 2%|
| Strawberry (Flavorah) | 1.25% |

PG/VG = 50/50

by St1llFrankalmost 6 years agoThis flavor... This is not my kind of flavor

I forgot which one I liked better, Flavorah Guanabana, or Soursop. They had a similar vibe overall but one was lighter. I prefered the lighter flavor opposed to the "in yo face" funky fruit. Now I'm curious on which it was. I'll have to look at my notes.
