Safe, okay, and unsafe. Specifically diacetyl and acetoin
submitted almost 6 years ago by Gunkster

Hey everybody! I just want some feedback on what you guys think about components in flavorings. I know there are things like fructose and molasses that some people put in flavorings that absolutely shouldn’t be vaped. Then I have seen in this subreddit a mix on diacetyl. The media a while back said it caused popcorn lung but I don’t believe this and I have seen popular recipes such as Water Malone include a flavor with diacetyl and acetoin such as FLV watermelon. From my quick internet research I believe diacetyl and acetoin aren’t going to kill you or give you popcorn lung but I wouldn’t say they are safe like normal flavor compounds. What do you guys think?

There is 700x more diacetyl in a cigarette than in what you vape. There has been no reported cases of popcorn lung due to cigarettes. This myth was blown a long time ago.

Yeah I saw that debunking. Which is why I didn’t buy into the whole popcorn stuff. Was still curious what the reddit community thought about diacetyl. I’ll use the flavors, I don’t see any major risks.

I prefer Capella v1 flavors over v2. I'm fine. I'll let you know if I die from diacetyl poisoning :)

Capella V1 is the bomb.

This. If anything there may be cases of popcorn lung from smoking regular cigarettes. Those statistics are probably buried under all the other ones (Lung Cancer, Emphysema, many different forms of COPD). Overall I’m not too concerned about it. There are flavors out there with little to none of those chemicals.

This has been studied and debunked. The original case came from workers at a factory that made microwave popcorn, working with and inhaling concentrated diacetyl powder. 8 workers died. Many flavoring companies have already removed diketones from their products, but there are products that still need these ingredients: however, the amounts used are minute.

Thats granted that popcorn lung is supposedly indistinguishable from COPD. However I agree the amount is too small. You have to work over butter vats or have a popcorn bag licking addiction to get the condition afaik.

It's in beer too

Do you routinely inhale your beer? I don't buy into the diketones alarmism, but if you're going to make an argument, at least compare apples to apples. Vitamin E oil is in a lot of products people use and even consumed products. Are you willing to add that to your liquid, too?

I just meant to add an interesting fact to the table. Nothing else

Not to mention that what's used to replace it in DX and V2 flavors is butyric acid, which is most likely worst.

Based on the evidence (the fact that there's far more diacetyl and other diketones in smoked cigarettes and no one has fallen ill from diketone related illnesses due to smoking) they're probably okay, especially since they're highly diluted in eliquid.

Awesome sauce thanks bro beans

No problem.

I'll add that, with all things vaping and DIY: When in doubt, don't. So it's entirely up to you to use flavorings containing diketones or not.

This post by u/TeslaDelMar is a very good starting point if you are curious about the safety of flavors.

I remember reading about popcorn lung, and how you would have to inhale COPIOUS amounts of diacetyl in order to fall ill from it. Like WAY more than was possible from normal e-cigarette use.

... That didn't stop the media from going wild with it, and I remember when Capella started replacing the flavor because the fear-mongering beat the shit out of actual truth.

Gee, doesn't that sound familiar?

Yeah.... I didn’t buy into he whole popcorn lung thing but I figured I’d ask experienced people anyways. I have been posting a lot though so I wasn’t sure if I should haha

As a doctor, I'm going to point out that popcorn lung (obliterative bronchiolitis) is extremely rare and basically impossible to be had from vaping.

Even flavors with diacetyl are not an issue, the only time I might be careful is if you are making your own flavors.

As a chemist, I concur.

Personally I think its one of those moderation is key things, I dont personally mix with either and almost always vape my own mixes. I have just done it because there were not many flavors I enjoyed that had it and if I make juices for others I want to be confident in what I give them. I cant imagine it is going to make a great deal of difference unless you are using it in large amounts or exclusively but again it comes down to personal preference. I would suggest if there is a flavor you enjoy and enjoy it as a treat from time to time you dont have much to worry about. I wish you the best of luck and hope you have many years of Happy Vaping :D

Thank you! I was just about to place an order and had been wanting to try out that watermelon recipe I mentioned but wasn’t sure if I should because of the questionable components

Popcorn lung was due to workers in a microwave popcorn factory inhaling particulates of powdered diacetyl in the air. That is very different from inhaling the aerosol of vaporized liquid diacetyl.

I approach it all as harm-reduction. People have been telling me vaping is bad for me since I started, after 5years and much fewer bouts of bronchitis and upper resp. issues, im gonna keep on vaping the stuff that taste the best. Rosemilk, Watermalone, Vanilla Custard yumminess, bc it beats lighting something on fire and breathing it in. Sure it not good for you. Its way better though.

Most of my recipes have one or more letters from DAAP. I'm not personally concerned about them but understand others are.

IMO the common ingredient that I am most uneasy about is sucralose (Sweetener, CAP Super Sweet, etc). I dont add sweetener to any of my recipes. Some of my flavors themselves have sucralose I'm sure, but I never add sweetener specifically. It helps that I dont really like sweetener. I stopped using sweetener because of potential health concerns and accidentally found out that I actually PREFERRED the taste of my juices without sweetener.

I think vaping juice with sweeteners is still way better than smoking, but if an ingredient that I DONT LIKE has health concerns, my choice is obvious.

TLDR: Sucralose worries me, but if you are choosing between sucralose and cigs, choose sucralose.
