Vegetable Glycerine
submitted almost 6 years ago by goofygotgoofed

I bought a bigger bottle of 100% VG about 4-5 months ago. Been using it time to time, once again today i wanted to mix some juice and i noticed a very sweet smell coming from the bottle which i have never noticed before. It still has its original color which is see through.

Is this normal and safe to vape or should i throw all of it?

VG is sweet. Taste a drop. Not too much, though. It's also a laxative.

I have tasted few drops and its just as sweet as it smells, ive heard its supposed to have no odor

It can absorb odor and moisture if not sealed properly but I wouldn't be too concerned unless it's an unpleasant odor. Its shelf life is considerably longer than you've had it.

And now you've heard that it's sweet all on its own.

As VG ages its sweet taste becomes more noticeable I would assume the smell is simply a side effect of this.

Unfortunately I'm completely anosmic, so I've never noticed this before. But I have used the same VG for a year with no issues.

Do you mix via volume or weight? It could be that a syringe you've had flavour in has contaminated the VG. Always clean your equipment thoroughly or use single use gear. And if you make a decent amount look into mixing by weight.

Hope this helps, best of luck!

How is your sense of taste? I have the opposite problem where I have a really strong sense of smell. If I had never been a smoker I could have worked as a K9.

I explain it as I have no perception of "flavour". When I eat, drink and vape I get the sweet, sour, spicy, umami etc. So, for instance a lot of green apple flavourings taste exactly the same as lime and other sour flavours.

This is a side affect to a medication I was given several years ago. As a result I often go for strong, potent flavour (like me some spicy food).

Also sort of interesting to note a change in what I like. I used to hate the flavour of strawberries. However without that flavour the sweetness and slight tartness of strawberry is rather appealing.

It's fine. I've been using the same 1gal bottle of VG for a year and a half.

Completely normal...

Not sure about PG though when it starts smelling. I inve bought a bottle and the cap apparently cracked. I did not notice till months later and at that point the VGA smelled like paint remover.

Couldn't find anything about how safe it was to use.

VG is considered a sugar alcohol. It is supposed to be slightly sweet. It will have a slight sweet smell. If stored correctly it will last years.

I throw the VG in the mini fridge along with my flavor stash. Just take it out half an hour before you mix so it's a bit easier to work with. Keeps well that way.

I store my PG/VG in the frig and hav used bottles for a year + and never a problem.

Agreed.

Unless it was left open for months in a sauna to absorb moisture and become less than ideal it's pretty bulletproof.

Incidentally i did NOT break into your house and mix CAP Super Sweet @.50% into it either.

That would be illegal and unethical.

.25%...... eh, borderline unethical.

Stay mixing friends!

Vegetable glycerin should be odorless and clear. I believe vg has a shelf life of 24 months when stored properly. Make sure it's in an airtight container because it's a humectant and will draw moisture in. I also wouldn't stick in it, always pour it into something instead. I personally wouldn't use it, it sounds like something got inside of it.

This is just the shelf life in theory, it's actually much longer. If stored in a reasonable way, even 10 years shouldn't be a problem. PG as well as VG are bactericidal/antimicrobial, see e.g. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4415329/ so if something gets inside, it won't survive.
