Before I start I have another post in electronic_cigarette if you’d like more info on this go see my post there it’s my most recent
Lately I have been buying a monstrosity of ejuice, which I try on separate days to see which will make me sick. The common effect that comes on is foggy head right away then a day or so later I shit my brains out. This is very much like my celiacs disease and wheat allergy, I also am allergic to lactose. I have spoke to some people over on electronic and they sent me here because I’m in search of what it could be. The farthest we can get is cross reactions or maybe maybe with the slim chance a flavor being derived from wheat or alcohol. I want to try to make my own ejuice I guess and be 100% safe I guess a simple flavor would be best I like fruits. I’m clearly allergic to something but we can’t point it out so if you guys can help I’d appreciate it I have been stuck with “The finest Eliquid” mango and the apple one I can’t vape there other juice or I react, I have tried countless brands. They said I probably had the best chance here. I will try to answer as many question and what not you guys have.
I am no expert. What I'd do is start off with a blank slate. Firstly, vape plain VG. Then introduce things one at a time til you find possible culprits. Introduce nicotine, introduce PG, introduce one flavour at a time.
u/SovietCockroach, I am pretty expert, and this is the answer. To further it a bit, there are multiple sources of both pg and vg. If you stick to specific brands, you can find the source (eg for vg try palm, soy, coconut sourced), and try each one before deciding that you can't have that ingredient.
I used to source ingredients professionally, and a good manufacturer will share every detail about their product (source, processing, purity etc) happily. Stay away from any brand that says "I don't know", or can't tell you because "intellectual property" etc, generally means poor quality with something to hide.
If they're doing everything right, they'll be proud of it and willing to give you all the details, the best manufacturers will respond with something like "we have a specific technician responsible for production and quality control of that product, we'll ask him to give you a call back asap"
Okay that works for me been busy sorry guys, I can buy different versions of vg then? I message juice company’s often but never gets responses back lol.
I'm not surprised that you don't hear back from juice companies at all. Remember there's no manufacturing standard, they're commonly just not doing the right thing and using the cheapest possible shit to make a dollar.
I'm talking about pure single ingredients like vg. Basically, have a look at what brands of pure vg you can buy in your location. Contact each company (the manufacturer, not the seller), ideally by phone. Ask your questions, take some notes. Buy a couple of small bottles from different companies.
Test each individually on yourself from different sources. The one you tolerate and which has ok flavour is the one you will use from now on. Once you have found a good vg, add pg see how it goes - same things apply, try a few.
After that - start adding flavours
This is what I would do in your shoes, assuming you've vaped a variety of e-liquids.
Contact that e-liquid's manufacturer. Explain your situation without casting blame and request a copy of the Safety Data Sheet for the product that makes you sick. Do the same for any other commercial e-liquids that make you sick.

Next, contact a few manufacturers of e-liquids that don't make you sick and send them something to the effect of:

"Hi there. I was hoping you could assist me.
I have allergies to certain substances. Some of them I'm well aware of and some I end up discovering by accident.
I've bought *product name* many times in the past and have had no issues which is good because I'm a fan of it.
I was wondering if I can get a copy of the Safety Data Sheet for *product name*. The only intended purpose I have for it is to cross reverence it with Safety Data Sheets of products that do make me sick.
Hopefully this will help me pinpoint substances in e-liquids that are possibly detrimental to my health so I can avoid those products.
Thank you in advance for your reply,
Have a great day.
(Your name)"

Use that data to help figure out what you currently can.
Don't be afraid to ask for Safety Data Sheets of flavorings you're interested in before you buy them.
To add to what /u/MasterBeernuts says:
I would narrow down some likely flavours that are causing this.
You are fine with Mango and Apple. Great.
What are you not fine with? Dessert/Pastries? Citrus? Floral Fruits? Sweet Fruits? Creams?
You need to get small bottles of various types with as clear descriptions as possible. So dont go for "Cloud Chungus", but maybe go for "Summer Fruits".
Get a few "genres" of flavours, and see how you react.
You have known good flavours, and presumably some known bad flavours. So, I think (and this is in no way definite, just an idea):
- Do as /u/MasterBeernuts says, and test VG, Nicotine, and PG in steps to rule these out.
- Use a little amount of known bad juice, and increase it each day until you get a bad reaction. Use your good juice the rest of the day. When you get a bad reaction, this is your "base line tolerance". Ideally, you are able to establish an amount for a mild reaction. Noticeable, but not debilitating.
- Test different genres of juice. Desserts, Creams, Candies, Sweet Fruits, Juicy Fruits, Floral Fruits, Drink Replicas, Tobbaccos etc. Use the amount you established in the second step, so you dont incapacitate yourself for a day. This is to narrow down what it might be. If its fine, increase it a little each day just to make sure.
- Buy some flavour concentrates within that genre (or even specific flavours) of the bad juices. Test each one individually, and rule them out. Once you get one that gives you a reaction, you should check the datasheets for it to see its listed chemical ingredients. Cross check these with datasheets of flavours that have been good. Basically, something in that flavour is not good. You have (for example) 10 other flavours that are good. So anything in the 10 good flavours can be ruled out from the bad flavour. Anything left is suspect.
- Find other flavours that have suspect ingredients (ideally only 1 suspect ingredient) to try, and start ruling out the suspect ingredients.
- Once you have a likely suspect ingredient, buy another flavour that has this (perhaps outside of the genre, if possible) and confirm with a bad response to vaping it -- this is optional.
However, I imagine some of the actual chemists that live on this sub will drop by and help narrow down the range of flavours or likely suspects.
Good luck!
Okay that sounds good I can do that. I currently am vaping a basix strawberry trying to test it. I use to be okay with aqua mist I tried the strawberry milk and was instantly sick that’s about as far as I journeyed into food I always stick with fruits. The two I recently ordered was bad blood from nasty and the basix. I have always wanted to try the donuts ones and stuff never have because of the waste if I lose on the gamble.
Have you considered that you are allergic to a food dye?
I’ve never considered it, I just dont react to food much anymore since my diet change. I would have figured I might I’ll check into this too though.
Since your diet is limited by your condition it is possible you never got a chance to discover the allergy. Also consider ethyl maltol and surculose as culprits.
As a fellow Celiac, are you absolutely sure you aren't getting gluten or wheat from a food source as well? There are a lot of things that shouldn't have gluten, but do (looking at you, lemonade, WHY?!) Also, do you have an allergy/sensitivity to soy, because a lot of VG comes from soy.
As far as it tracing back to vape juices, as others have said, contacting manufacturers and trial and error are your best bets. Personally I can only use fruit flavors, so I just stay in my lane so to speak when considering new flavors to try. I have a pretty hefty list of no go flavors/flavor families.
Luckily, you can pick up really small quantities of flavoring pretty cheap, so making test batches shouldn't be terribly expensive, just annoying and time consuming.
Yeah I’ve been a celiac for awhile now, I’m only 19 but my whole house is gluten free since I was so sensitive and couldn’t get better. Eventually once the wheat around home and everything was gone I started “healing” I guess idk lol. But yeah I been at it since I was 15. I know most celiacs aren’t bothered by normal manufacturers juice are you fine with like store bought juices? I’m always curious if there anyone that has issues too lol.
I gave up on store bought juice and picked up DIY. I reacted to probably 70% of the juices I bought. I have a different sort of reaction though, I get hives and my throat swells up and such.
Another thing to consider in addition to an allergy to something is that you could have developed another autoimmune disease too. I started with one, now I'm up to five. Just something to consider due to the nature of autoimmune diseases, unfortunately.
Just something to add - I‘m not in the same situation as OP or you, but I attest to the fact that you can develop allergies. I started vaping with 70/30 (VG/PG) mixes. After 2-ish years, I suddenly had problems vaping. My throat would start to hurt and close up (e.g. I couldn‘t breathe as good) after vaping. I quickly found out that PG was the culprit. Now I vape juice with 80% VG and 20% destillated water and I don‘t have any problems anymore.
Despite me being able to vape it for 2 years, it suddenly caused problems. Maybe OP is allergic to something he doesn‘t know yet / developed another allergy.
Also, regarding full VG juices: 100% VG is super, super thick and I frequently had problems in cold weather, meaning the coil didn‘t wick properly. So, OP, if you have the same problem, consider using 80/20 VG/destillated water. It thins out the juice considerably and makes it vape-able again.
how many mg's of nicotine are you vaping , I get the foggy head and the shits if I vape a higher nic concentration
Were you using nicotine before vaping? Are you using too high amount of nicotine, like using over 6mg on a subohm tank.
For the past few years I started having issues with my mouth getting really raw, like cheeks, gums, and tongue swelling up, and it felt like I had been sucking on warheads for days. I had to switch over to diy because of the flavor ban in WA and I honestly should have done this years ago because as soon as I stopped using the commercial juice my mouth was fine until I tried a recipe that was overly sweet like most juices and my mouth got irritated again. So now I know it's something to do with sweetner or possibly a small allergy where I am not bothered by it until I get over a certain amount. By making your own juice and starting from a black slate you will be able to figure it out, I am sure. I hope you find out what is going, that sounds awful to have to deal with that.
Sometimes when I vape 60mg salt nic mango juul pods I get the shits and it's entirely dependent on me vaping too much. I find it only happens when I get nicotine nausea from getting carried away and getting a high dosage. Nausea is your bodies way of telling you to get rid of something and shitting is just extra steps.
It could be related to your celiac disease but if that was common I think more Celiac's would have expressed issues and made this a known phenomena, for this reason i believe it's probably a unique sensitivity you possess.
I can only buy vape juices that have strong flavorful tastes. Mostly the ones with 2 or three different flavors in them. For example: Watermelon lemonade, or the Tropic Kings Mad Melon which has three different melons in it. If it’s just “blueberry vape juice” I tend to get BAD migraines.
I suspect the sweetener . Link
