So I just got my INW Cactus in. I've heard plenty about it going well with fruits but I'm not sure what I should try it with. If anyone who's worked with cactus in the past has any pointers or suggestions I would appreciate it. 🙏
People claim it can give fruits a juiciness. I don't get that from it though. It can liven up fruit mixes though or make them more interesting depending how much is used. It's especially good for melon flavors in my experience.
What this guy said. Less of a juiciness and more of a taming of some of the harsher, drier fruits like FA that give it more percieved 'wetness.' At least ime. Plays very well with tropical fruits and melons.
And I'll drop my favorite recipe that uses it, Rain by AlfredPudding.
I've been using cactus for a while now. Same brand.
It does make 'some' fruits more juicy, but you have to be VERY retrained with with. Like /u/penatbater said start low like 0.25%. While I agree with that it should almost never be used as a main flavor IMO.
Here are the fruits I've tried it with and seem to work well:
- Pear
- Fuji Apple
- Lime/Key Lime
- Pineapple
- Peach
- Stawberry (Note on this one, it's even better with a bit of kiwi and a dab of watermelon when doing cactus)
- Honeydew
Tastes like perfume to me
I recently bought a bit off a recommendation that it could help improve fruit flavors, since I made a recipe recently that tasted a bit dry and all the strawberry taste disappeared after a day. Figured I'd just wing it and see what happens, and put 2 drops in about 30-40ml of that juice made. And I hated it immediately, those two drops made the entire juice taste like aloe. So I left it alone for a few days then came back to it and to my surprise it tasted pretty good! No more strong aloe taste (just barely noticeable unless I focused on it), and it did somewhat complement the flavors already in the juice, brought a bit more life into the strawberry so I could taste it again.
So just saying I now see it can be valuable with muted flavors like fruits, just in VERY low amounts, and probably after a week's steep or longer. Otherwise I can't ever see myself enjoying it as an actual flavor like I hoped; while it basically accomplished my goal it does taste like ass to me if I can ever taste the flavor.
I like that it feels a bit acidic and green, it helps exacerbate fruits flavors imo, by removing the blank 'background' taste without overpowering the fruits flavors. I get some premade red fruits concentrate these days and add a bit of strawberry, honeydew and cactus on top to really make the red fruits pop.
Grack/GIGI, Prickly Victory & Rainforest are a few of the recipes I use it in. I've also been eyeing Apricaught Me Slippin', but I've been hitting the baccos hard lately... as far as making it your own, theres others better suited to those tips than me.
So with the grack (which sounds delicious) what is the merengue?
Meringue*
If you want cactus as a major player, use it at 2%, maybe 3%. Pick another strong fruit flavor, pair it with the cactus. You'll want something to bridge the two flavors, citrus works well.
I also just got it (specifically for grack) but it's got 2 more weeks in a drawer before I can comment on the flavor... In other words, I have no useful info other than you should look into grack lol
I highly suggest trying it with dark berries or grapefruit.
Ive been trying to make something happen with my cap blackberry and tfa blackberry for a while and have been failing miserably. Might add a little into the mix and see what God forsaken road it takes me down.
Could probably make something work. I don’t have experience with cap bb but tfa need to be used really low. If you like blackberry grab (SC) blackberry. Such a good flavor. Also, the blackberry trinity is pretty good.
4 Inw grape 3 inw cactus 2 vt fizzy sherbet boom!
I've gotta try that. Just happen to have Fizzy Sherb for 007 cola.
I could not stand the stuff when I first got it (all freaking 4oz because of so many people saying it is a must have) at any percentage but for some reason I mixed up a30ml at 2% with some WS23 1.5% 50mg salt nic for my Lost Flavor Orion and it is awesome. I even made some for my mod tanks and drippers same flavor % but 10mg FB nic. My friends that have tried it didn’t like it at first but then a few of them started requesting it for Vape Tongue and sinus problem times. It is some weird stuff I tell ya. A must have in any flavor stash collection.
