There are a lot of watermelons out there. They span the gamut from sickly-sweet candy to earthy and raw. This gives us a lot of options for pure watermelon recipes as well as a bevy of melon-fruit hybrids.
Ranking
Here are the watermelons I own ranked from most candy to least:
- CAP Silverline Candied Watermelon
- WF Sour Watermelon Candy
- TPA Watermelon Candy
- CAP Sweet Watermelon
- DIYFS Maniacal Melon
- DIYFS Watermelon
- TPA Watermelon
- CAP Double Watermelon
- PUR Melon Patch
- MB Big Watermelon
- FLV Wild Melon
- FLV Watermelon
- FA Red Summer (Watermelon)
I wouldn’t expect anyone else to rank these the same way I have, and that’s fine. This should give you a general idea of where your watermelon falls on the continuum. PUR Melon Patch and FLV Wild Melon are arguably not watermelon flavors, but they’re good enough that I felt they warranted inclusion here. A popular watermelon I don’t have is the LorAnn stuff.
Quick reviews
I have written up a very brief review for each of the watermelon concentrates I own:
- CAP Silverline Candied Watermelon - recommended 2-5% This is a fairly strong candy watermelon with a sugary aftertaste. It feels very one-dimensional.
- WF Sour Watermelon Candy - recommended 2-5% This is pretty powerful, but the sour leads with the watermelon candy flavor taking a backseat. Best used in concert with other more prominent melons.
- TPA Watermelon Candy - recommended 2-4% Probably the simplest “watermelon candy” flavor I can think of, this is not very strong but doesn’t have any off-notes to me.
- CAP Sweet Watermelon - recommended 1-4% Very sweet but the watermelon flavor is prominent. Too candy for a non-candy recipe, not candy enough on its own otherwise.
- DIYFS Maniacal Melon - recommended 2-4% This is a melon blend, fairly sweet but I got off-notes of alcohol when I SFT’d it
- DIYFS Watermelon - recommended 3-6% Totally forgettable. Weak.
- TPA Watermelon - recommended 2-6% A simple, mildly sweet watermelon. This is where I started, and I am glad I expanded my stash.
- CAP Double Watermelon - recommended 2-4% Stronger than CAP Sweet Watermelon. Not much sweetness but no earthy notes.
- PUR Melon Patch - recommended 3-7% Definitely more than just watermelon here. Not terribly sweet, but brings a good flavor.
- MB Big Watermelon - recommended 3-7% This is a strong, clear watermelon but the concentrate is not particularly potent.
- FLV Wild Melon - recommended 1-3% Not just watermelon, but this is an amazing bridge between melons and other fruits. Can’t recommend this one enough.
- FLV Watermelon - recommended 1-3% This is not the melon you're looking for. Unfortunately I get a very wispy, thin watermelon taste, like an unripe watermelon. Not strongly recommended.
- FA Red Summer (Watermelon) - recommended 1-4% This is the richest, least candy watermelon I have tried. Use it sparingly to add a clear watermelon note to other fruits.
Recipe ideas
The most popular flavor to mix with watermelon is strawberry, likely due to the popularity of strawberry itself. That said, you can get a lot of mileage out of watermelon combined with other melons, or even with some citruses. Honeydew and cantaloupe are natural pairings for watermelon. Apple also works quite well, the crisper the better in my opinion.
For watermelon candy recipes, adding something sour is a solid way to punch up the flavor a bit. PUR Melon Patch or FLV Wild Melon add a medley of flavor that would work well in other, non-watermelon candy recipes.
For authentic watermelons, lean on FA Red Summer. From there look at CAP Double Watermelon or TPA Watermelon. They're in the middle of the road in terms of sweetness but have a solid watermelon flavor to bring to the table.

EDIT: Added Strap-On cause go mix it.
Im new to diy and I love watermelon premium juices. Specifically AQUA sour melon. I picked up sour watermelon candy and attempted to make a sour watermelon but it tastes like perfume to me! Is it just me or am I doing something wrong. I really want to try to make a sour melon Aqua knockoff but am overwhelmed on where to start. Looks like pur melon patch may be a good start? What sour do you recommend?
Aqua sour melon is the shit (except for the coil killing factor haha). It was my go to for a long time. I have a few flavors on order to try and clone it myself as all I have now is tfa watermelon candy. What mixes have you tried so far? Hit on anything close that wasnt perfumey?
I got sour watermelon and gummy candy on a whim without really knowing anything about diy and tried to make it. Did not turn out good. I've been researching a lot since then. I've not tried any mixes for watermelon that weren't my own concoction. But have learned a lot from other mixes.
I did just order flv wild melon, sour ball candy sc-wf, sour gummy candy sc-wf.
Im hoping I can find a watermelon and sour I can use together.
What flavors did you get to try and replicate it?
I have tpa watermelon candy and tpa sour so far, as well as fa fuji which has a little tart note and tfa cantaloupe which is somewhat juicy and lays as a nice note in the background of some of my fruit mixes. Not specific to chasing aqua but in my latest order I included cap sweet watermelon, wf sour watermelon, flv wild melon and csl candied watermelon (thanks for making me spend more money /u/TeslaDelMar /s) as well as tfa honeydew 2.
I probably should have ordered something with a gummy or sour gummy flavor as well but I'll work with what I have and see what happens.
Perfumey taste is often too high a %. I haven't tried the juice you are aiming for or the concentrate you are using. Try bringing the % down. If that doesn't work try a new concentrate. Flavourart or capella with a touch of almost any citrus is good (FA blood orange if you are buying something).
Thanks, I'll try the sour watermelon at a lower% I guess. What's your favorite watermelon?
I haven't done side x side testing and not sure which capella it was that I had. Really enjoyed FA and whatever CAP it was though. Didn't think much of TFA. Also Walter Malone by decadent vapours is good, not sure if it is something else rebranded. Its pricey and doesn't have much size selection though
No Strap-Ons listed in your examples of watermelon recipes? Boo!
Otherwise, great write-up though, thank you!
You know what, you're right... I have never mixed the original! It's a sin! I added the OG strap-on to the list of recipes and I am going to mix it up soon! Thanks for reminding me!
TBH the OG kinda sucks in comparison to many of the variants but maybe you should try the OG first in order to feel inspired to make your own faux peen recipe.
One flavor that goes great with a variety of melon recipes is FLV Sour Apple, keep lower for Tart note or higher to bring out more apple
