DIY Digest XXVI: The ID10-T Edition
submitted over 5 years ago by ApexifiedThe Kingmaker

> /u/ID10-T is arguably the most prolific, talented, and memorable mixer to ever come from the DIY_eJuice subreddit. He’s also going to hate me and everything about this post. But what are friends for if not to put you on a pedestal and set people's expectations higher than you can casually achieve? Is that... not what we’re for? Oh well, here goes:

You might know him for Flavor of the Week or, more specifically, the terrible puns that are produced by him weekly or you may know him as semi-cantankerous co-host of Noted, or the guy who helped you craft a recipe when you asked for suggestions in the Clone Request thread or the Weekly Suggest a Recipe thread.

But chances are, you’ve missed at least one awesome thing he’s done, so I’m here to elucidate.

#The Recipes

This self-appointed village idiot has managed to amass 1,414 recipes or about 1.2 recipes a day since his first recipe post on ATF and for more than half that time he was testing and talking about dozens of flavors every week on Noted (118 episodes and counting) and in recent weeks even writing out and sharing those notes in the Weekly SFT thread.

You might be wondering how many of those recipes could really be good and the answer, if we go by how many he’s released to the public, is around 7% or 98 recipes.

If you ever throw a recipe profile ID10-T’s way you will probably notice he’s like an advanced AI--almost instantaneously computing all the possible flavors and their potential merits. He’ll quickly spit out a list of viable flavors, then run it through for more processing, at which time he eliminates all but the most vital components, and gives each remaining flavor a starting percentage. What you have is a recipe that’s 80% finished and ready to test.

I’d like to think that the 1,316 recipes hidden from us are all just 80% there and waiting to be tweaked to reach his standards.

#The Projects

 • Mixers Club

> Welcome to r/mixersclub!

> Once a month, our members mix and package samples of an original e-liquid recipe they have been working on and, in return, receive sampled recipes from other mixers.

It was created by /u/thatswhatshesaid in 2016, who went AWOL about a year later, at which point /u/ID10-T took the helm and became a hub for the whole thing; paying for a PO box to receive all the samples from the other members and distribute them. Every month all the groups would write up in-depth critiques/reviews for all the recipes and share them on the sub. It was (and still is) and incredible idea and unlike most of the incredible ideas of its kind, it actually worked.

While it doesn’t actually operate on Reddit anymore, due to those pesky new rules that came along, it is still alive out there, some place I can’t link to, with a new name, and recently a new top dog to keep it going: /u/isumadog

 • GooberGrapeVape

> Have you ever wanted one particular flavor so bad that you created a subreddit dedicated to the task of making it a reality and then spent two years and 53 posts in an attempt to perfect it? /r/GooberGrapeVape is exactly that.

Some might say its a pipe dream, or a lost cause, but the tenacity is real and it will never die.

 • Throwback Thursday

> This was an awesome project that aimed to revitalize all the standard guides and tutorials in the sidebar. Every week for 21 weeks ID10-T would post up another aging link from the sidebar for discussion and then, armed with all the input and advice from the community, would rewrite and repost it based on that discussion.

 • Clone Challenge

>“Too often all those desperate pleas in the monthly clone request thread get crickets. We've got people making the same requests month after month and getting nothing. It's sad.

>The purpose behind this monthly clone challenge, if there's enough response make it a regular feature, is to gather the community behind an effort to clone just one juice.”

The first clone challenge kicked off in the best possible way. Luck would have it that BlueDot, makers of the juice everyone was there to clone, would come along and hand out store credit for all the prospective challengers. At that point anyone who wanted to try the juice in order to clone it, was able to get it shipped to them for only twenty-five cents. Deal!

The Clone Challenge carried on with diminishing interest for almost 2 years before it was handed off to another user who had a habit of being very helpful with clone requests in general and was specifically active and winning many of the clone challenges. Not long after that, it faded out of existence.

 • Flavor of the Week

> 4.5 years ago /u/sxeQ suggested the idea and the legend /u/Botboy141 posted the first FOTW. A few months later /u/Helfrd0771 took over and carried the torch for just under a year before letting it fade away. For a few sad months the users of the sub were lost, spending countless minutes, week to week, wandering from thread to thread, looking for one place to talk about about a single flavor profile... and then:

FOTW is back!!! This week's Flavor of the Week is... MANGO!

> Last week marked 3 years of uninterrupted FOTW. That’s 156 weeks and only 1 of those was posted by someone other than ID10-T (it was me!)

#ID10-Tic Highlights

>There's really nothing more satisfying than watching this guy vape terrible flavors. Seriously, people have paid money to see it!

> Read the description. Try the recipe. Either way, unless you're dead inside or have a broken palate, this recipe will make you feel things.

> There are well over 100 but due to variations in the way people name them, that search only pulls up 75. And it all started with you-know-who.

 • Recipe Reviews

> There’s really no easy way for me to quantitatively show how many recipes he’s actually reviewed. He probably doesn't even know. What I do know is that it's certainly more than anyone else--ever.

And the most recent highlight worthy project from the mind of ID10-T is a History of the First Order Flavors list where he goes back in time to show us how (and sometimes why) flavors faded in and out of popularity and jockeyed for position on the list.

 • First Order Flavors: A History

>Volume 1

>Volume 2

>Volume 3

>Volume 4

And in conclusion: I'll shut up about my friend Dave now. You all get it, I've said too much but somehow didn't manage to cover it all. Feel free to add something I missed in the comments or write your own love letter to ID10-T.

You had me at ID10-T. Man this guy always has time for you. If he was a recipe he'd get 5 stars from me.

ID10-t has helped me out an absolute ton throughout my time mixing. Whether it be through his work on noted, time he has spent discussing recipes with me, encouraging efforts toward a given profile, discouraging efforts toward others, sharing detailed notes on individual flavors, or his taking the time to review recipes of mine he has been instrumental in my developing any semblance of competence as a mixer.

u/ID10-t, thank you.

Help me figure out how to get revenge on Apex for this. He knew better, he said so himself right in the very second sentence of this bullshit post. I don't know what I did to upset him so much that he felt like he needed to embarrass me this way. Maybe not getting First Order Flavors: A History. Volume 5 done yesterday?

Is it time to force him to be a guest on Noted? I suggest "Noted: Savory 2 - Return of the Cheese". (grin)

I don't think ID10-T could possible realize the hundreds, thousands of hours of help he's given to so many of us mixers. I'm not talking directly about the mountain of time he himself has kindly spent researching and writing this stuff, but the other end - how many hours it's given US.

The amount of times I've spent until the wee hours of the morning poring over his notes, comparisons, searching his recipes for inspiration. Watching Noted, consulting /u/odiedoodah wonderful Flavor Facts spreadsheet, scrolling to the bottom of FOTW to read poor /u/juthinc's woes.

Among many others, ID10-T has given me an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience that would have cost me years and thousands of dollars to amass myself. Multiplied across the 50,000+ other DIY'ers in here...

Thank you sincerely, /u/ID10-T. I think the most helpful and transfomative tip I ever read from you, was from your Hotseat Sunday nearly 6 months ago.

by juthincover 5 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

I learned a lot from our ID10-T, even if there's only a few of his recipes that fit my preference (which, when you consider he's created a near-infinite number of recipes, shouldn't be too surprising) but he's one of the good ones about recipe notes. Sometimes, knowing why flavors - even ones too horrible to buy, like strawberry, vanilla, peachy(including mango), black licorice, or Cancer Cake - are used in a recipe, you can extrapolate as to which good flavors could be used together in similar ways, or substituted in the place of one of the vile ones to improve on a recipe...

And then there's his skill with words, like his descriptions of some of the worst flavors ever... Like TFA Baby Puke, FLV Fungus Cereal, FLV mango... So many bad flavors, so much sarcasm, such painful puns..

"It tastes like a sugar cookie that's soggy from being sucked on". I paraphrase, but it was something similar to that.

Started delving into Noted, thanks to this thread. His descriptions both boggle the mind, and make perfect sense.

Dave is simply the best. Love that dude to death. It's been really rewarding seeing him transform from this guy randomly asking questions in a thread, to the all-encompassing absolute beauty that is everyone's best friend and mixing partner. I can't say enough good things about his recipes. Almost every single one I've ever mixed from him has been spot-on my exact "taste" (Longing will forever be in my rotation <3). He's my flavor doppelganger, if you will. In other words, we share mouths.

by Kittybit8over 5 years agoI found my thrill on ID10-T’s hill

I feel like I should share a little about our all special friend in need aka. the village idiot aka. Dave!

A while ago, I approcahed Dave and said "Hey! I wanna be on Noted!" so he invited me on - the episode were about rice and horchata. Not having as much experience as him, Emily and Cheeba in the field of rice nor having ever tried a horchata vape, I figured it went well.

Moments after the show ended, Dave looked me up, tossed a giant list of upcoming episodes and asked if I wanted to be on Noted once again some day. I agreed and picked a few episodes where I felt my experience would be better. That's the kind of guy Dave is. He might be high and mighty and must go through some very embarrassing messages every now and then (i'm sure some still remember Apex's 1-2-3 contest, where a user from here made something absolute trash, just to lure out "the king" - very embarrassing!), but even as high and mighty as he is - he's one of "the people".

I bumped into Dave even before I was on Noted. I must tip my hat to his patience, cause I did pull him through a lot of shit with a lot of (now) very dumb questions. I'm sure he must have gotten very tired of me at time point, but he kept his face straight... well, mostly.

Do I wanna call him any mother in laws dream? Heck no! That boy has a foul mouth - all it takes for you to understand this, is to watch an episode of Noted. Do I remember when he mentioned Emily must like "pink guava"? Yes I do! But the way he manages to express himself - foul mouthed or not, is almost artistic. That is the essence of Dave!

Dave, you're a god damn idiot, we we love you and you have done so much for this community and you keep doing what you do best. Talk smack and mix some god damn juice.

Ps. You still haven't done my 1-2-3 strawberry cheesecake fluff like you promised, you dingus.

I was named king of the north, but I feel like I've been off romping with Daenreys instead of tending to the kingdom. We may need to go back to the old ways. Will you return to the Kingdom as the Hand, u/ID10-T?

ID10T is probably my most stalked reddit user. We have similar tastes and I love the way he describes things. I have been lurking around the board for a few months now just soaking in all of the research and knowledge. I’ve been amused and inspired by not only Dave, but so many of the varied personalities here.

Just now starting to SFT the 70 odd flavors in my first order (I... have no chill) and have made it 30 in. The wife and I write out our flavor notes and then often try and find Dave’s take. It’s very validating when I can pick up on some of the same notes. I have also obsessed over recipes and watched so much Noted (taking notes) to try to absorb some of his vast flavor knowledge.

In short- first time caller, long time listener that would like to say a heart filled thank you.
