Stand Alone Flavors and 2 Flavor Mixes

Writing this at the 11th hour, so I’m keeping it short today so I can get some sleep. This will be more of a research post with some links to my saved posts. If you missed last week’s appeal for Original Content you can find it here. Comment below if you want in.

This post here and this one here got me thinking about addressing stand alone flavors first. SAFs are flavors that carry enough weight to be enjoyable to vape on their own, all by their lonesome selves. They can generally be considered incomplete as most flavors benefit from a few accents at least, or simply pair up well which naturally leads this topic into 2 flavor mixes and flavor pairings.

Stand Alone Flavors

If you are doing your due diligence, you’re starting with a single flavor test. Check out part 1 and part 2 of Concrete’s rant on SFTs. Maybe a flavor was so interesting to you, so captivating, that you decided to see what the upper limit was on the flavor. Slowly crank that up to find your sweet spot. Tested at 1%? Bump by halves. Tested at 5%? What would happen if you push that to 8 or 12? Try it and find out! You may find yourself completely satisfied with a flavor and just be comfortable vaping that for a good while. I once read that an ADV should be light enough to not be overpowering on the palate, just enough to keep you looking forward to that next pull. Some Stand alone flavor posts: Capella stand alone flavors. Or maybe you are trying to DIY on a budget and you just want to keep it simple while you clear your initial buy in costs low.

2 Flavor mixes

So, you’ve vaped the crap out of a flavor you’ve loved and now you find yourself smacking your lips wanting a little bit more. So you start by asking yourself what you want in there to see what’ll happen. Here’s where the art of the flavors is rather fun. You can use the knowledge base of flavor pairings to start to guide you. Check out the Flavor Bible Post post from a few years ago. A nice short hand for vapers can be found Flavor Pairings Chart (I think taken from the vapers table) and you can try out some pairings suggested. A little digging around found this Post (check out the links in the comments for some cool resources). Lastly, you can use what’s been done already and sounds good to you to try. Flavor pairings have been discovered and posted may times in the sub. Here’s a few posts for you to check out some of the favorites of the last few years: Favorite 2 flavor pairings, flavor pairing being creative and stuff, Or search the Single Flavor Thread Weekly for flavors with the idea to try something that jumps out at you for a potential STF/Flavor pairing.

Linked in the last post, Creating the Two Flavor Banger is really a great guide for developing an approach to creating a great mix. This may be just a little different than making a pairing. Read it.

Simple Mixes

From here you can use the diy recipe Haiku and go 1-2-3. It’s a nice way to get started layering your number three and just experiment. Check out this FAQ Friday Simple Recipes and try out some of these recipes you feel speak to you.

Love CAP Sweet Tangerine, where have you found a good percentage?

Tough to say, been a while since I did this solo, but in an RDA I'd go for 3%, maybe slightly more. If you're using a cheaper sub-ohm tank or pod, you can probably double that.

Thanks, I'm using an rda and haven't gotten it dialed in yet, then I ran out of Tangerine.

Flv Red Burley (nutty), Native (RYO), Kentucky (All purpose cig)

INW For Pipe Series (Black, Dark, Gold), Am4a

Stixx Mixx The Supreme, Whiskey Cavendish, Honduran Liguero

Edit: also, I’ve heard flv root beer was good solo as is tpa banana nut bread. Tested BNB at 5 but according to u/ID10-T it can be cranked up to 8.

FW cherry berry is solid on its own.

SC Old captain is enjoyable, though it really benefits from some help it's certainly good on its own.

FA Forest fruit, LA lemonade, INW Pitaya, RF lychee, and FE lychee are all viable on their own.

I don’t like to add a name unless they’ve given the ok to do so. But I figured we’d talked about it so I edited you into the list.

CAP Vanilla Custard V1 is great on it's own. Add some sweetener to bring it out, especially ethyl maltol (cotton candy), let it steep two weeks at least. Also good to throw candy fruits at it like FW Blueberry in near equal amount or INW Shisha Strawberry in a bit less than equal.

INW Lemon Cake is fantastic for what it should be. Sweetener, tweaking with lemon or cake can be done. I kinda like it as it is, or I add some cream/custard.

CAP Lemon Meringue Pie. I have a love/hate relationship with this. Great on it's own, but needs a long steep to kill off the artificial lemon flavor. And even a hint of this in a mix sets off that flavor without a steep. But add a few things and it blooms into something amazing--good reason why most lemon tarts start with this.

FLV Pink Guava. This is a stand-alone flavor. It doesn't like to work with other flavors too well. Regardless, this is my go-to always mixed backup flavor. I get a 60/40 split of grapefruit to guava, sweet and sour, and have been playing with stevia in it at low amounts with some koolada. 2% Pink Guava, 0.33% Stevia, 0.5-1% Koolada.

FA Fuji + INW shisha apple = fresh ripe deep red apple

JF Honeydew Melon + TFA Gummi Candy = super sweet honeydew

CAP Sugar cookie v1 = good as a stand alone

Some that I like (apologies if they're already listed elsewhere in this thread):

  • CAP Berry Cooler ~3%
  • TPA Banana Nut Bread ~5%
  • FLV Creme de Menthe ~1%
  • FLV Red Burley and FLV Kentucky Blend - an amazing pairing, anywhere from 0.5% to 1.5% can work
  • FLV Boysenberry ~1%
  • DIYFS Holy Holy Grail RY4 (v1 ~5%, v2 ~7%)

my recommendation:

Hiliq Mixed Berries.

currently vaping this in a 75VG/25PG mix at 1%, which is the good spot for me, although you could probably go as high as 2%. If so I would let it steep for a few days though as the strength of the flavor seems to decrease a bit with time. Very strong on first mix. really nice taste and you don't need to add any sweetener.

I think this flavor would go well mixed with yogurt, although i haven't tried that personally yet.

Hiliq apple and mango are also good individual flavors, and also mixed together. I'm currently also vaping an apple-mango mix at 0.5% each, although the mango seems to be a bit stronger than the apple, so i'd adjust the ratio in future. probably stick to 0.5% mango but maybe go up to 1% apple, or 0.75% if you want it less strong.

like anything people's personal tastes differ so these percentages are a guideline only. experiment to find which ratio you like best.

Thank you ! I am another mixer that is in the keep it simple camp. This is very useful for new mixers, especially the flavor ban victims

LB pink lemonade,

LB cappucino, ( think choccolate , not real coffee )

FLV milk and honey,

Tpa banana nut bread

Cap 27 bears ( pineapple forward gummy bears )

by juthincabout 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

I don't really go for single flavor mixes, but if I did, I'd start with:

INW - most of the 'for pipe' line, AM4A, Tobacco Absolute Cuban, Marzipan, Mix Mint, Eucalyptus w/Mint

FLV - Red Burley, Connecticut Shade, Creme de Menthe, Native Tobacco, Fire Cinnamon, Boysenberry

GL - Cherry

LA - Lemonade

FA - Marzipan, Black Currant

VT - Banana Custard, Chocolate Mousse, Chocolate Custard, Botanical Gin, Scotch, Bourbon

SA - Irish Coffee

TFA - Honeysuckle (maybe?), Cherry Blossom

CAP - Sweet Tangerine

FW - nothing

SM - Kona, Burley Flake

INW Cactus is great when paired with a strong flavor to counterbalance it, and usually something to tie them together. Like Blackcurrant (which can stand up to the cactus) and Lemon (to bridge the divide). Or Cherry and Honeysuckle. Or...
