Let's see what you Smartie Pants come up with for this Flavor of the Week: Sugary Candy!
submitted about 6 years ago by ID10-TWinner: Best Recipe of 2019 - Counter Punch

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is.... SUGARY CANDY (Pixie Sticks, Sweet Tarts, Smarties, etc)!

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested! If you're not interested in the upcoming FOTWs, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are basically video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Next week's flavor will be: Eggnog

The week after that will be: Red Licorice & Swedish Fish

The week after that will be: Pound & Butter Cake

The week after that will be: Sponge & Fluffy Cake

The week after that will be: Chocolate Cake

The week after that will be: New World-brand Custards (TFA, CAP, FLV, WF, LB, PUR, etc)

The week after that will be: Old World-brand Custards (FA, JF, INW, etc)

The week after that will be: Far East-brand Custards (FE/SC, HS, HC, VT, etc)

The week after that will be: Currant

The week after that will be: Custard Apples (Cherimoya, Guanabana, Soursop)

The week after that will be: Grape

The week after that will be: Blessed Trinities (Blueberry Trinity, Blackberry Trinity, Bourbon Trifecta, Cheesecake Trinity, Cake Trinity, Ice Cream Trinity, Lemonade Trinity, Mango Trinity, Peach Trinity, Daveberry Trinity)

FOTW idea for the last week of 2019 (on diyordie):

Each one of you picks 10 best new flavors you have tried in 2019 (with 4 or 5 of you that would mean around 20-25 flavors). Additionally each one of you picks 3 or 5 worst flavors of the year. Ofc more of you in that particular show (can be recorded earlier), the better. What do you think, FOTY instead of FOTW in that week?

Ooooo, that's a fun idea.

Love this idea. Anything that gives the team an opportunity to feature recipes too.

I have brief notes on some of these:

WF Dweeb Candy - Not good. It mostly tastes like a strawberry-grape-apple candy of the smooth hard candy shell type, with a slightly powdery sweet base, but with an absolutely gnarly plastically chemical off note. I think this is supposed to be Nerds candy based off the name but those come in cardboard boxes and this tastes instead like they were wrapped in plastic and you’re vaping the plastic along with the candy. Not quite identical to the cherry medicine bottom-shelf rum plastic off-note, but similar to it. In addition to the plastic nonsense, there’s some throat hit to deal with as well. After trying handfuls of other Wonder Flavours candy flavors, I found most of them to be best in class or at least really good, but this is the one I would caution against buying. I’ve seen it used really low, like around half a percent, and it might be effective and good down there, but at 2% this is like unvapeable bad and at 1% I did not get nearly as much flavor but was still picking up that horrible plastic thing.

WF Candy Stick Candy - This suffers from bad marketing in that I see it paired up with pictures of candy cigarettes and those things are nothing but edible chalk. Nobody wants to vape that. Fortunately, this does not taste like candy cigarettes. This actually tastes just like the stick that comes with Fun Dip. So it is a little chalky, I would say appropriately chalky, and a near perfect mimic of a Fun Dip Stick. I think it’s basically very tightly compressed powdered sugar with a touch of artificial vanilla but if there’s anything else that goes into a Fun Dip Stick to give it that distinctive flavor, it’s in here.

FLV Candy Roll - I think it’s supposed to be like Smarties are in the US (which are something very different in the UK and Canada apparently). They’re a candy of compressed powdered sugar that crunches back into powder. They’re little pastel-colored discs and each one is flavored like a different fruit (white is orange cream, yellow is pineapple, pink is cherry, green is strawberry, purple is grape, and orange is orange) but only very lightly flavored so the fruit isn’t super identifiable. It’s not identifiable at all if you take a handful of them at once, which, let’s be honest, that’s what you do. FLV Candy Roll doesn’t quite do that, it’s a bit sharper and more tart, with a more forward fruity flavor, more like American Smarties and Sweet-Tarts had a baby. It does a compressed powdered sugar thing very well without being too dry or chalky and is a thick, full-bodied flavor. The fruit, though more forward than in a smarties and less tart and in your face than a sweet tart, is still not really identifiable. I can maybe pick out orange and enough other stuff that orange is definitely not alone, but it’s a mishmash of fruity on top of that sweet powdery base. I do have one major issue with this flavor and I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone else mention it. It’s the reason why I had to take it out of my Icy Spicy Mangonada attempts and work with TFA Sweet & Tart instead. It’s that every single time I take that first hit from a fresh drip of this flavor, I taste something like rubbing alcohol. Every single time. It never steeps out. It goes away after the first hit or two, but every time I drip more of it, there’s that rubbing alcohol back, and it’s unpleasant. For this reason, I don’t use it at all. I want the first hit of something to be impressive, not unpleasant.

WF Sour Ball Candy - By itself, this tastes like nothing in particular. It’s definitely an additive-type flavor. So what does it bring to party? It’s not really sour, but it is tart, kind of citrusy that’s closer to lemon than other citruses but not distinctly lemony. It’s also sweet, and very full-bodied. It’s smooth and kind of creamy but tastes like it has a tart candy “shell” around that creaminess. Two of three recipes on ATF right now that use it are using it in sherbet-type recipes and that seems like a great use for it, to tart up those fruits while at the same time contributing to a sweet, creamy base.

WF Chews Candy - The top notes are a little sharper and tart and more like vaguely fruity candy shell, while the base is more like a thick candy that rides the line between powdery and chewy. Sort of like chewy sprees. The tart part is such a mess of fruitiness that I can’t pick out a single fruit, which could be a very good thing because versatility. Unlike the Sour Ball candy that leans more citrusy, this tends toward something more like a candy apple and candy grape combination, without actually being either of those things. I pick up a hint of vanilla in the powdery-to-chewy base that seems to contribute to the thickness and body or chewiness, kind of like when adding a very low dose of TFA Vanilla Swirl for volume in a candy fruit recipe and still having a bit of vanilla peeking out. Lingering powdery but not chalky sweetness. Could be a secret weapon all kinds of other chewy candy or gum type recipes.

I thought you always saved these posts for the Weekly SFT Thread - grin
But I'm glad you post them anywhere - they're very helpful.

In Canada, your USA "Smarties" are called Rockets. Horrible misshapen PEZ-like things that don't fit in the dispensers at all, but a roll only counted as 1 in a penny-candy/pick-and-mix sales situation.

Our proper Smarties are very similar to "plain" M&Ms. But better. Or at least they used to be, for the same reason that the Brits will tell you that American milk chocolate tastes of sick. (Haven't had 'em in years, so I can't tell you whether the butyric acid disease has infested them these days.)

Am American. American chocolate tastes of sick. At least, Hershey's does. I don't notice it so much when mixed with other things or in dark chocolate but a plain Hershey's milk chocolate bar absolutely tastes to me like it's already been swallowed and yakked up.
