With the sudden influx of new users under the threat of looming flavor bans, it's been suggested that the less-than-1-year-old "First Order Flavors" list in the sidebar could already use a refresh.
Makes sense. Once you realize DIY juice is something you can do and want to do, it's completely natural to have two basic questions:
-
Which flavors should I buy?
-
What will I be able to make with these flavors?
The First Order Flavors was last updated in November/December 2018 but a lot has happened since then, both in flavors and especially in recipes. I still think it's reasonably solid list, but surely we can come up with an improved, more up-to-date lost of versatile, easy to use flavors, and more importantly, more options when you scroll down to "What Can I Make With These?"
The "first order flavors" lists have always been created via a contest thread. The 2016 update was the first one that attempted to address a problem inherent in having a first order flavors list -- people would order a bunch of flavors from the list and then not know what to do with them, resulting in a lot of "What I can I make with these flavors?" posts. The current version also provides a list of recipes one could make using only flavors from the list. Let's do that again. Here's how you can help and be heard.
-
Nominate a flavor that you think belongs on the "First Order Flavors" list.
-
Provide a link to a relatively simple (no more than 5 flavors), accessible, peer-reviewed recipe that uses that flavor.
-
Upvote others' nominations that you agree with.
For example, if I thought TFA Strawberry Ripe belonged on the list, I might post this comment:
> TFA Strawberry Ripe > > God Milk
Any upvotes my nomination gets would count as votes for Strawberry Ripe. The recipes will be used to put together the list of "What can I make?" examples at the bottom of the First Order Flavors list -- provided all of the flavors in there make the cut. So if I wanted, I could make another post listing the same recipe, like this:
> TFA Bavarian Cream > > God Milk
Or I could post the flavor again with a different recipe and try to get even more votes for Strawberry Ripe:
> TFA Strawberry Ripe > > Mother of God's Milk
But I wouldn't post the same flavor AND the exact same recipe as someone else, because that's just creating clutter.
This is always an enormous pain to tally up, but I can't think of a better way to give everyone a voice in choosing which flavors go on the list and which recipes will be provided at the bottom as "just a few of the recipes you can make using these suggested 'first order' flavors."
I'll leave this thread in contest mode for a two weeks before locking it and tallying up the results. But that doesn't mean you can't start using it now to find some simple, tasty recipes that use popular ingredients.
If you want to see how this worked the last time it was updated, here's a link to that. One thing is going to be different this time though, I'm recusing myself from nominating anything after doing most of the nominating myself last time. Let's see what y'all come up with.
EDIT: THIS POST IS LOCKED BECAUSE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO END FOUR DAYS AGO I need a few days to tally up the results and then I'll post them.
INW Cactus deserves a place here with the majestic Prickly Victory
I absolutely adore INW Cactus and use it not only in Prickly Victory but in my experiments with peppermint, apple, kiwi, all the bright and fresh fruits. Watermelon and cactus is grand, cucumber and cactus is grand, it works with everything and you'll be using such small amounts (0.25 - 1%) that it's a cheap and durable investment even at 10ml which I imagine is what most newcomers will purchase quantity wise!
INW Cactus and CAP Sweet Guava were both on the First Order Flavors list that was voted on last year and Prickly Victory was on the list of recipes you could make with them. I've seen that recipe get even more love since then so it seems like it certainly should be carried over to an updated list.
WS-23. Feeling lazy? Throw whatever fruit you want and some WS-23 in a bottle and you’re good to go.
Backwoods Lemonade is a good example of a simple but delicious mix you can make using WS-23, but this is probably my most used “flavoring.”
Ice cream? WS-23 Lemonade? WS-23 Soda?WS-23 Iced tea? WS-23
You get the point. If you like cool vapes, it’s an absolute must have.

INW Shisha Strawberry - Daily Driver
Perfect example of what we're trying to do here: find simple, accessible, tasty (peer-reviewed) recipes that use common, versatile, easy to use flavors.
Thank you for being the first to participate!
To piggyback on this, Shisha Strawberry standalone at 7% is ridiculously good too. It sounds way too high, and in a recipe it would be, but trust me, it's an awesomely juicy, jammy as hell, Strawberry shake and vape. I wanna say it was NotCharlesManson who originally suggested this in a post in some random thread way back when Shisha Strawberry was the new hotness, around 2016ish...go 6%+1% Cactus for an absolutely soaking wet S+V Strawberry Jam! Both are really good and simple for those who may prefer straight fruits to the more popular Strawberry Creams
Nominate a flavor that you think belongs on the "First Order Flavors" list.
INW Custard
Provide a link to a relatively simple (no more than 5 flavors), accessible, peer-reviewed recipe that uses that flavor.

INW Custard is one amazing flavoring. Not only is it one of the only custards that don't really require a long steep ( other then the hard to get FA Custard Premium ) , it is absolutely fantastic in this 1-2-3 Recipe.
INW Custard itself also has the ability to add a sort of sweet and slightly eggy note to any bakery without completely dominating the recipe, and in my opinion is very versatile. It is for sure a must-have and is not very hard to obtain.
CAP Sweet Guava for the same reason u/RoninVX picked INW Cactus, Prickly Victory.
Prickly Victory only uses INW Cactus and CAP Sweet Guava, it’s amazing, and both of those flavors are must haves in my opinion. Ronin already went into why you need INW Cactus, so I’ll just talk about the CAP Sweet Guava.
Besides Prickly Victory, CAP Sweet Guava is a must have if you like tropical recipes. It is used in a large majority of the POG recipes found on ATF, and it is just an all around great flavor.
For real! - Look at all these other simple recipes it's used in that people have enjoyed:

After your talk of green bastard on the Guava episode of noted, that’s the one I’m most excited for. I ordered Guanabana just for that recipe.
LB Vanilla Ice Cream - The Trinity Vanilla Ice Cream
Was gonna nominate this one, but was trying to give u/eyemakepizza a chance to be a shill again ;)
I've not tried any of the Liquid Barn flavours but I've noticed they're frequently raved about. Gonna throw a few in with my next order - any other essential LB's I need to check out?
For those who want tobacco :
FLV Red Burley - https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/143131#the_gindra_s_by_thefogvlog
This one is great even by itself at around 3~4%
Great flavor, recipe...not so much.
I know you just said that because it has vanilla but i still feel the need to clarify.. Yeah, its not the best but only 3 flavors and it uses another one, Shisha Vanilla, that'll probably end up as a "first order flavor". So i think it's the best i could find to showcase the concentrate and still be newbie friendly/on the cheaper side even tho its FLV+INW.

FLV Red Burley
I should add that Red Burley is awesome all by itself, I use it at 3%, and I typically add .5-1% INW DNB, but it's not a necessity.
Flavorah Wild melon
Best melon flavour I have tried yet, great all by itself at 3% too

FA Forrest Fruit - Backwoods Lemonade
FE Lemon - Backwoods Lemonade
FLV Sweet Cream. Best place to start for a creamy vape.
INW Raspberry
very strong, and an absolute delight at lower percentages. well known for its appearances in Grack Juice and Rhondonite, when I think of vaping, I think of INW Raspberry or Butter Pecan (the two of which together are a guilty sweet treat in any cheesecake base).

here are two accessible, well rated recipes featuring INW raspberry , though I haven't personally tried either.

many of us will have all the ingredients for the second.
>or Butter Pecan
Which Butter Pecan? There's a few, although I'm a huge fan of FW Butter Pecan and, more recently, CAP Silverline Butter Pecan (the SilverLines definitely don't get the attention they deserve round here - esp. considering they're specifically targetted as a budget range - I'm surprised at how few of them I've found to not be enjoyable (I'm very fussy with flavours/conc.'s) or versatile, if, at worst, a bit on the weaker side)
INW DNB - Brigade
Plus, you need it for pretty much every other recipe from /u/chemicalburnvictim
INW Black for Pipe
FA Polar Blast - Mr Freeze Purple
FW Blueberry- The Rickoning
Capella Green Apple Hard Candy to make Camp Tigerclaw https://alltheflavors.com/recipes?sort_order=new&name_like=Camp+tigerclaw
This is a horrifically simple recipe designed by its creator (u/concreteriver) to mimic a commercial ejuice in all its sticky, cloyingly sweet loveliness. As such it is a perfect example of a first DIY recipe in that it is super simple to make while at the same time staying within that sweet, highly flavoured comfort zone that many first-time mixers will be used to from purely vaping pre-mixed commercial juices. Well worth giving a try if you like a sweet candy-apple vape.
FA Premium Custard
-
Not really a game changer but it's the only thing that can genuinely rival CAP Vanilla Custard and has a significantly shorter steep time, I think it should be mandatory for a beginner. You want result fast with your first mixes and I can't see a better custard for that. (there's INW Custard but it's still not the same as CAP Van Custard and can't be as easily swapped in recipes)
As for recipes, I can't link any precisely since virtually any with CAP's custard can be used.
WF Vanilla Cream Extra
Others might disagree with this being a first order flavor, but to me, it’s one of the most versatile vanillas I’ve come across in the three years I’ve been mixing.
And I’m highlighting this recipe in particular because it’s simple, and easily one of the most impressive and delicious recipes I’ve come across in three years of mixing. It tastes “premium” off the shake, and only gets better with time. If I was new to diy, and mixed this as one of my first recipes, I’d be inspired, and there’d be no going back.
TFA Honeysuckle - Apple Blossom
FW Blood Orange, as seen in Sunshine State by /u/eyemakepizza, as well as several even more popular recipes using 6 or more flavors, like 007 Cola and Fantastic.
VT chocolate custard -Red Army
FLV Mango - 12 Monkeys - Mengabey’s Remix
It has six flavors listed, but since one of them is sweetener, I’m not counting it.
Super Sweet CAP
RY4 Double TPA
Acetyl Pyrazine 5% TPA
All can do amazing things to recipes as accent flavors. Ry4 double can work as a main.
*I know 2 of the recipes use 7 flavors. Mainly all versatile. It's just these recipes are absolutely amazing.
CAP Super Sweet
FLV Connecticut Shade - Gatsby
in the end we will get to Abuela!
btw sould we make a "first recipes" list with max say 3 flavors for begginers? These could then be separated in categories, and the first flavors should come out naturally
We're basically trying to do both at the same time here, but if it doesn't work that well as far as the results we might have to approach it from more of a recipe angle.
cool, the combined strategy will sure give interesting results! I have just seen the Tuesday Tutorial DIY standalone flavors is also complimentary
INW Cactus. All-day. Every-day. What is it's magic? I don't know but if you wanna vape fruits you NEED this. Any fruit + cactus = magic wizard juice.
Cactus needs a strong fruit flavor to stand up to it, like a strong Purple (INW Grape) or currant (FA Blackcurrant) or cherry (GL cherry, but use a lot) or lemon (INW Lemon Mix) or else it'll bully the hell out of it. But yeah, when it's counterbalanced properly, it is awesome.
TFA Cherry Blossom - Apple Blossom
INW elderflower - Here
FLV elderflower is supposed to be a good 1:1 replacement, tho.
FE Hongtashan - Red Army
FLV Pink Guava - Guavalyptus
With personal taste being so subjective...I think a new F.o.F. list needs to be compiled of all of these EXCELLENT flavor-ban approved, tobacco flavorings... don't you think?
- Tobacco #1...
- Tobacco #2...
- Tobacco #3...
- Tobacco #4...
- Tobacco #5... So on and so forth...
INW Lemon Mix The best pink lemonade ever
Alpine Strawberry (FLV)
http://tjek.nu/r/wFNq
or https://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/3212072/The%20Chosen%20One
and I use SugarDaddy Regular at .5-1.2% depending (Profile Unity vs Alien or even a corrugated staple helix)
I would not say that a concentrate that costs around $15 belongs on a "first order" list. Most people that are switching to DIY are doing so to save money.
I used to think like that myself, until I understood how little had to be used of the flavorah. ELR shows the average mixing quality in recipes for Alpine as 0.6% and for strawberry ripe to be nearly 6%. When I checked the costs at Bull City flavors that pretty much puts them very much in the same league and the Alpine strawberry doesn't mute after 3 weeks of steep. Just saying....
Muting is a problem with strawberry. I don't have the Alpine Strawberry pretty much because of the cost, but now I want it because you say it lasts. But I must agree with u/UnappreciatedRobot that this is a concentrate that doesn't belong on the first buy list. It's an intimidating flavor, expensive, and there are so many other tasty alternatives.
I agree. While good value, potent flavour concentrates that stretch for a mile are definitely something to be conscientious about as a first-time-DIY'er, most of my first orders consisted largely of one-shots because I lacked the wisdom/confidence to commit to buying - in particular - a lot of the higher-priced non-TPA/CAP ingredients.
That said, it's still worth a mention (re: the higher-priced potent ingred's)
TFA Acetyl Pyrazine 5%
GL Cherry - Here
