What Single Flavor Discoveries Did You Make??
submitted about 6 years ago by RancerDS

WEEK XXVII

Bigger batches when you're lazy

Hello, hello! Summer is almost over. Time to break out those fall/winter recipes that you've been holding off doing now. By the time they've steeped, temps will drop a good 10 degrees (hopefully!). Did you make any startling discoveries recently?? What kind of results did you have when trying out new flavors? And don't be bashful, please. Still not seeing much on a couple of new lines that are available on NR. Poor Dave can't keep up with all of them by himself.

Also, wondering, should we expand this a bit more? I made a discovery about something, yet haven't tried it as a stand-alone. And maybe everyone here but me already knew about this. This week's example will be about this particular flavor that I'm referencing.

EXAMPLE: FA Black Tea - Mixed feelings

Like was mentioned above, didn't try it on it's own. I threw in 1.5% to TFA's Sweet Raspberry at 5%. It's great for a shake-n-vape (SnV)! Left it alone for a couple of months and noticed it had gotten very floral. Could probably handle that if the tea flavor was strong and bitter. But it wasn't, so didn't work out well at all. Also tried mixing 0.2% in with a tobacco mix I like. Within the week, again, a floral note. So if you're looking to add floral to something, this may be perfect. Otherwise... vape up that SnV as fast as you can!!!

I tried, or in many cases, retried, 39 flavors. I'll try to fit something about each of them in a single reddit comment.

FLV Pink Fruit - Not Strawberry. I thought the name might imply something like a strawberry starburst. It’s a very light flavor that tastes like a very soft, sweet, mixed generic berry with a hint of grape.

WF Strawberry Milk -Gross, rotten strawberry. It’s sweet and thick and finishes smooth but none of that makes up for the absolute nasty on top.

DF Strawberry Cream - Lots of very sweet, syrupy, bright candy strawberry with a thin and slightly pukey cream.

RFSC Strawberry Taffy- Tastes like licking strawberry taffy next to someone painting their nails. Does have a tangy strawberry taffy flavor, doesn’t have the chewy sweet strawberry mouthfeel of taffy. Instead, a hint of nail polish.

OoO Strawberry Sour Belts - Whatever is supposed to be making tastes sour just tastes like pickle to me. Like a cheap pickle dipped in sweet strawberry syrup.

FLV Strawberry Cream - The strawberry tastes weird, like it’s fermented. Although the cream is barely there, it tastes like it would be better without it, it’s a gross juxtaposition against a fermented strawberry.

TFA Strawberry Yogurt- Cardboardy strawberry and chalky yogurt base.

PUR Fizzy Strawberry - Mostly powdery candy strawberry like those old bottlecap candies, with some vague citrus behind it, with a weird, warm medicine-y chemical edge. It is similar to the weird taste from TFA Sweet & Tart when that's used too high.

WF Fresh Strawberries- Overbearingly sweet candy strawberry, with some slightly perfumy, almost medicinal nonsense.

FLV Strawberry -A very jammy but deeply weird take on a natural strawberry. It has a very thick jammy body but it’s kind of waxy as well. It makes me feel like I’m eating equal parts of the layer of wax sealant on top of some old-fashioned homemade strawberry jam and the jam itself. The strawberry jam itself tastes off, too, like it was made out of old strawberry fruit leather, but without as much sweetness and intensity as fruit leather.

TFA Organic Strawberry - Mild top note of something like an underripe strawberry, and there’s some fruit peel-type green earthiness there, but not any tartness. Has a thick, somewhat greasy feel to it.

TFA Strawberry & Cream - Artificial strawberry top notes. Lightly vanilla cream flavor without much of that rich, smooth creamy feel. Dry.

CAP Strawberry Taffy - Does have a taffy-esque slightly tangy strawberry candy flavor with a sticky sweet type of base but it’s also a soft flavor, not a lot of punch to it, and cranking it up just makes it get too waxy and weird without oomph-ing the strawberry.

CAP Strawberries & Cream - Less of a strawberry and cream than a slightly creamy strawberry candy, like melting down a strawberry and cream sucker and then watering that down.

LA Strawberry - It’s a very jammy strawberry but it tastes like someone tried to save money by making jelly out of as little strawberry juice as possible or out of cheap out of season strawberries without much flavor to them.

FLV Strawberry Smash - Sticky sweet but weak strawberry, like drinking watered down sweetened strawberry juice, with hints of greenish floral and almost mediciney bitter stuffs, and bit of cream-soda like cream.

FLV Strawberry Filling - A very sweet yet natural strawberry, like smooshy thawed out carton strawberries coated in sugar syrup, with a smooth, thick and oddly somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Just a little bit of a weird plasticky off note, which lingers.

OoO Pop Pastry Strawberry - Sweet, jammy strawberry filling type of strawberry top note but the pastry part is weird, it’s pasty. It’s a pasty pastry. I guess that’s pretty accurate for an untoasted poptart but eww.

RFSC Strawberry Jam With Toast - Light sweet, jammy strawberry on top and a base of strong slightly burned toasty-type thing with a hint of butter.

FW Strawberry - Tastes fairly natural but again there’s that out of season strawberry that just doesn’t have that much flavor, with just a little artificial bump to it. Has a soft tartness to it but not a lot of other complexity, isn’t a very deep flavor but isn’t top heavy, it’s more just in the middle, without that brighter top or ripe, juicy depth.

FW Strawberry Shortcake- It's pretty delicious, in a Little Debbie strawberry swiss roll kind of way, but I think that’s just because it’s just their yellow cake mixed with their mediocre strawberry, and yellow cake is delicious.

TFA Strawberry - Very flat, mostly one dimensional, candied. Sweet, but a bit dull. Reminds me of a strawberry Twizzler, complete with waxiness.

DF Strawberry Milk - Blends together a fake but not aggressive strawberry and a light dairy cream. Strawberry is soft and milky cream is a little thin, lacking the real richness of a full fat strawberry milk... it's like strawberry skim milk.

ODF Strawberry - Very weak. Tastes like a bright and sweet natural strawberry for some reason wrapped in fake cotton candy.

DF Strawberry - Should be called Strawberry Underripe. A natural strawberry with a punchier tart top note flavor and less sweetness than other strawberries, but not floral or perfumey, just tart. Without that sweet depth it’s a little on the thin side but it does have some fleshy-type body.

LB Strawberry - It’s harsh for me. Why would a strawberry need to be harsh? But other than that, it tastes like a combination of mostly candy strawberry with some more natural ripe strawberry flavor, like a strawberry candy that makes an attempt to taste like a fresh strawberry, and is very full bodied and deep. A little tartness, too.

TFA Strawberry Ripe - Tastes like a sweet and fairly ripe but out-of-season strawberry, kind of watery or watered down. Like a strawberry grown under a lamp instead of out in the sun.

FW Strawberry Milkshake - A small amount of an entirely pleasant if somewhat fluffy vanilla cream, like a low dose of their vanilla bean ice cream, underneath a somewhat underwhelming strawberry. The strawberry tastes like a well-rounded combination of real strawberry and artificial strawberry, but just isn’t very vibrant.

RFSC Strawberry Gelato - Top-heavy, thin, and dry, but that top note is perfectly on point for strawberry gelato or soft blended strawberry and milky cream.

CAP Sweet Strawberry - Similar to TFA Strawberry but it has some more punch to it and not so waxy. Very sweet and like unapologetically artificial, with some tartness to it, like a melted strawberry jolly rancher.

TFA Sweet Strawberry -An artificial candy strawberry at heart, but a complex and different one compared to other candy strawberries. It appears there is a sweet spot where this is a good standalone strawberry around 3%. I get some floral at 4%. Similar to the floral edge you get on some raspberries. At 2%, no floral, just a bit of tartness where that was, but not a ton of flavor overall. At both concentrations, the base is different from most too, still tastes artificial, but with a dark sweetness, almost like a blackberry-strawberry candy combination. Lots of thick, sweet jammy body.

FLV Alpine Strawberry - Wild Strawberry on Steroids. Bold, sharp, bright, tastes not only natural, but like it was grown somewhere far from civilization. Very deep and saturated flavor. Floral-ish... vapes kinda like a floral flavor but tastes... unique, not perfumy. Wild, without being too “green.” Had to wash RDA, it lingers.

RFSC Strawberry Milkshake - Barely any milky cream, but the strawberry here is super bright and tastes just like strawberry syrup. Cream part is very sweet but mostly just sweet, with only a little milky taste and not that rich full milkshake mouthfeel.

LB Strawberry Cheesecake -- It’s not a proper cheesecake. It doesn’t have any crust at all, but it’s also not even really a crustless cheesecake. But it certainly beats all of the other strawberry + cream type of flavors, with its balance of bright, strong candied strawberry and heavy, buttery cream. The sweetness is more in the strawberry and the cream lacks both the sweetness and that dairy tang of cheesecake, it’s more like just like syrup-sweetened strawberries dipped in heavy cream.

OoO Strawberry Jam - Mostly tastes just like sweet, sweet strawberry jam. Not just a “jammy” strawberry but actual strawberry jam. A hint of a “buttered popcorn” taste and some odd buttery richness.

RFSC Strawberry It’s a pretty dry and very top heavy and isn’t a great single flavor vape because it needs something to feel out that lack of flavor and even raw VG poking through in the finish. But good lord, what’s there is freaking great. Ignoring the dryness, it tastes like a fresh natural strawberry with a little tartness to it and it’s a bright, vibrant flavor.

WF Strawberry Gummy Candy - Welch’s Strawberry Fruit Snack. That specific flavor and texture. It has a deep, saturated flavor with a thick sweet gummy body. Vapes very smooth and full.

CAP Ripe Strawberries - A realistic strawberry, with deep, thick flavor, and very dark syrupy sweetness. Dark enough that it’s like there’s a blueberry or two in there with the strawberry. Not a fresh strawberry. Those frozen strawberries, thawed out, all mushy and extra sweet. Delivers a ton of flavor without tasting off.

WF Strawberry Baked - Tastes like the fruit part of a strawberry cobbler, where you’ve tossed strawberries in sugar and then baked them down into a gooey sweet mess under some sort of crust. All this needs is the crust and maybe some sort of cream topping. Thick almost rich, like some of butter from the missing crust seeped down into the gooey syrupy berries. Very deeply saturated flavor but not at all candy-like.

I'm going to guess you are looking for a good strawberry flavour.?

Something like that.

I've got 14 more to try this week from Inawera, Jungle Flavors, and Molinberry.

Lol. Your inventory has got to be busting at the seams from all the Noted episodes. I'm sure there's others besides myself who appreciate the blood, sweat and tears you put in!

I'm still searching for a mix to match, Gator Vapes Raspberry Riot. It's a raspberry tea, was going to try the same flavours as u/RancherDS but don't want a floral note. Good luck with the strawberry search.

Yum, love me some RFSC Strawberry with INW Shisha Strawberry, 3 to 1 is my go to strawberry mix.

Got almost all of the strawberries, gotta add CAP Ripe Strawberry to my next order.

Thanks again for all the notes 👍

I love your description for TFA Strawberry ripe, it's best explanation ever. Also reading your take on TFA Organic Strawberry makes me want to buy it.

I wouldn't recommend it, but there's different strokes for different folks.

Thanks for heads up. I didn't wanted to try it for strawberry part of it although I need to admit you had me interested at "Green earthines" and "thick, somewhat grassy" because it sounds like some hing fully down my street.

This new WF Strawberry Baked looks quite intriguing. I think i'm going blind on strawberries; losing taste for strawberries in the last year and my ordinary SB recipes need a gentle bump. Besides it looks it might be wonderful addition for bakeries and milkshakes. Great work. Thx!

WF Strawberry Baked was my favorite out of all of these. Obviously not going to be as versatile as many others, but if it's that specific kind of stb you're after, WF Stb Baked got you. And there's this factor I'm calling "novelty bias." It's new, it's different, I'm tried of the same old same olds, so I like it more.

If you think you might be going stb blind I have no idea whether you're enjoy it or whether it will help you, though.

If by "a gentle bump" you mean increasing the amount of the same stbs, though, I think you might want to try not doing that. Try keeping whatever other stb or stbs at the same amount and instead adding some RFSC Strawberry at like 1% or FLV Alpine at like 0.08% (0.08 not 0.8, shit is P O T E N T). Bet you'll taste them much better that way.

Thx. By going blind i meant i can't taste SB as much as last year when those were my favorite mixes. Everything tasted great and flavorful (was usually using shisha, ordinary inw and father's milk twisted mix) but this year i can't get those great notes anymore in the same recipes. Everything tastes bland and not convincing, boring, not exciting anymore. Maybe i just got tired of SB. I had a break for couple of months, but no difference. I'll try working with RF once again i guess; i didn't like it too much when solo testing and i just left it out later. And i'll buy this baked one too; hope for exactly what you said there with that novelty bias.

TFA Strawberry is not the greatest, but it's the only one that works in my main juice recipe. I've tried several of the ones you listed.

Yeah I have it in a couple of recipes, too.

So I'm pretty simple and easy... Liquid Barn Blue Raspberry is the best Blue Raspberry I've ever had and is all I can bring myself to vape the last week or so. 8% like the bottle says with a few drops of sweetener, so good.

Nice! Sounds like a simple recipe.

CAP Sweet Guava at 8-12% is honestly pretty dreamy.

by ID10-Tabout 6 years agoThe Kingmaker

What sort of set up are you putting that into?

by NutZach27about 6 years ago

I'm using salt nics on a smoke trinity alpha. Nothing spectacular by any means.

Pod system. That's what I needed to know. I would never have thought to crank Sweet Guava that high in my RDA but that makes sense and actually sounds pretty good.

Horchata as a base flavor and Inawera Little Space Drop.

by elviscocho30about 6 years agoSnV - No Steeping Ape

Notes of the flavors and percentages and what set up are you using?

1 points

by thesarlabout 6 years ago

For a 30ml batch, with 3ml of flavor:

Horchata starting at 1ml

Little Space Drop starting at .25ml

It's been a while since my last math course, but when I add 1 and .25, the result doesn't equal 3. So what's the missing info?

by elviscocho30about 6 years agoSnV - No Steeping Ape

It is not a flavor that i tasted but i came out with something that might be useful, after asking @ediblemalfunction on any ways of taking out of a eliquid a floral green taste in the general question i went on and keep tasting.

Background on this, i taste a lot of green froral or earthiness in inw grape and cap grape candy, after almost 2 weeks steep still there not asmuch but still there.

I try different percentages and for inw grape the best spot i found was 3% and what help me take those off notes after tasting different percentages of: ethyl maltol, fa meringue, inw cactus, tfa dragon fruit, was 0.5 % of fa merginue and 0.5% of ethyl malthol that did the trick pretty much after shake and vape, i would love to see if this work in other situation, if any of you is having this issue give this a try and let me know if it worked for you.

Since i dont have any other flavors in my stash that have floral or earthiness off notes i cant test this further.

Notes on the other attempts:

Dragon fruit did help a little but also take a lot of the grape flavor away.

Cactus help as always bringing juicyness but change the flavor, for juicyness i find more suitable cap sweet guava in fruity vapes at 0.5 percent give it sort of a juicy bite of the fruit you mix it with.

P.D. if your curiosity ask why im doing this is because im trying to do some grape recipes and this is are the two i have in my hands now.

by juthincabout 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

3% INW grape is pretty much the sweet spot. Never noticed any floral intruding on its inherent purple nature... And I use it in several mixes: GIGI, Purple Lemonade, and Mr Freeze Purple. The common ingredient there (other than the purple flavor) is a mix of cooling agents. So maybe they also counter the floral? Best test would be to try with a totally floral flavor like INW Raspberry Malina.

1 points

by elviscocho30about 6 years agoSnV - No Steeping Ape

I might be confusing the terms floral and earthiness thou since you are not the first one to tell me it does not taste floral maybe ia just me.

In the next topic, are inw raspberry and raspberry malina the same? I have raspberry but what i taste out of it that can be call off flavor is kinda like a cough syrup flavor which is not as bad if you blend with other flavors to tame it.

With this one what i literally just did since im mixing it right was inw raspberry 2.5% added 1% cap sweet guava and 0.5% inw cactus also added 1% cap lemon lime which helped to give some depth to the flavor still have some of that cough syrup taste but gonna wait at least 3 to 5 days to see how this blend before trying using tfa dragon fruit ethyl maltol or fa meringue to see how they work together and by themselves with inw raspberry.

Thanka for your help! Ill be trying adding koolada too to see how it responds.

INW is notorious for multiple similar flavor names for different flavors. Excluding combinations flavors, INW makes Raspberry, Shisha Raspberry, and Raspberry Malina, for example. Might be a TdM raspberry variant too I'd have to check. And then it's complicated by vendors rebottling and not being careful to get the name right. But Malina at or above 1% is vaping straight cologne, so I suspect you have the normal raspberry.
