Juices cracking tank
submitted about 6 years ago by fazer0702

I just got a Smok Novo and as soon as I filled it, the tank cracked within five minutes. This happened with the next 4 tanks with them lasting varying amounts of time, none longer than 6 hours. I read certain juices can do this. I was using black currant and Koolada in one and lemon Sicily, koolada, and a couple others in the other. Anyone else have these issues?

These were issues known a long time ago when plastic tanks were the norm. The industry switched to glass tanks, so the problem didn't exist anymore. When pods came back, the same issues arose. So yes, this is a known issue.

Some (citric and cinnamon flav's from what i remember) killed acrylic tanks.

I remember orange melting my plastic mouth pieces and swell o rings. That was worrisome about vaping plastic.

For future reference that’s a full list of flavorings that are know to crack plastic tanks, black currant and lemon Sicily are both on the list so those were probably the ones that did it.

Edit: Probably should have added that some flavors are on that list for containing possibly “unhealthy chemicals”. If you click on a flavor it’ll show you the reason it’s on the list. Lemony Sicily is on there for being a tank cracker.

I think Koolada has menthol in it. Menthol and any lemon I am aware of is known to crack tanks.

I recall years ago this was an issue with acrylic tanks before glass tanks became the norm. Menthol wasn't an issue, but citrus flavors were. As someone else has commented, the issue went away at that point and resurfaced when pod systems hit the scene with plastic tanks.

I have the Nord and get hairline cracks with using menthol(s). None of the cracks so far have caused a leak. I was aware it could happen, but tolerate it . Favorite salt is The Berg (menthol Heisenberg)

It's not just about leaking, the flavors are degrading the plastic and likely leeching into the juices.

I loved this fireball juice my bud made... Omg it was like vaping atomic fireballs. (candy)

I bought a specific tank i used only for that flavor because it embedded its self into the plastic.

I had a buddy get me like that one time. I had been working on a few bakery type recipes which included some cinnamon. So when my buddy at work asked if I wanted to try his cinnamon. I was all in with my tunnel vision and thoughts of the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Bam! Motherfuckering fireball lol.

Yeah, the candy cinnnamon flavors were the plastic tank crackers too.

I did love it. I have never made it. 🙃 i need to find a recipe for it. Would love to have it again.

I have to wonder, when you put the top back on the tank if it wasnt over tightened or if there was a metal burr or debris anywhere that would put excessive pressure on the tank to crack it. I actually never broke a plastic tank even the cinn tank, which i used for 8 months and was stained from the juice.

The fact is, not all plastics are identical. And similar flavors don't necessarily use identical flavoring compounds. So it is possible not all cinnamon redhots type flavors contained the same chemicals, and that some plastic tanks were more vulnerable to different solvents. So maybe your tank survived due to the plastic being a higher grade, or possibly the juice used more tank friendly flavors. Impossible to know.

As for your desire... Get FLV fire cinnamon, and start your test with that. You may want to add a candy base, or maybe some honeysuckle... Or the single flavor might be close enough. Hard to say.

What year is it? This is a post that was common five or six years ago.

Here's the deal. Don't worry about which juices will crack a tank. Just get a tank that doesn't have plastic in it. End of story.

Pod systems use only plastic. Maybe eventually some manufacturer will come out with a glass pod, but given that most would rather just have disposable pods that they sell prefilled, it may not happen soon. So until then, the issue will keep coming up.

To be fair, I may have said the same thing before I started DIYing / tried DIY juices.
