How long should DIY nicotine be left in Plastic containers?
submitted about 6 years ago by [deleted]

Posted in ecig sub, but realize this probably best suited here.

Purchased 1L of 100mg/mL nicotine in PG100% from HiLiQ.

It came in a wax sealed white plastic bottle - HDPE. Its now sitting in the freezer. I still have a few hundred milliliters of my last batch (sitting in glass bottles), so I wont be using this new batch for many months.

Should I be worried at all about long term plastic additives from the plastic bottle leaching into solution over time? Should I purchase more glass bottles and transfer the liquid into the glass bottles as soon as possible? Or can I just wait until my current batch is finished?

Confirmed its HDPE Plastic : Cant link to site because they sell nicotine, but go to HiLiq, and they sell the empty bottles.

You should have no worries. If kept in the freezer, there should not be enough time for plastic to leech or degrade.

If kept just on a shelf, what’s the timeframe for when one should be worried?

Edit: not shelf, refrigerator

Not refrigerator. The freezer. And I don't think you'd have anything to worry about. If you are that concerned, you'd have to research the details on HDPE.

Container is fine but I would draw out a few ml for testing. If you find out it's bad months down the road you'll likely be SOL.

This is probably a good idea. Then put the rest in the freezer

How would you test it?

Unless they’re talking about testing for contaminants from the plastic, which I doubt, just mix a bottle of vg/pg/nic at your preferred strength and see if it’s oxidized - it would be harsh and peppery if so.

Does what Freeze? VG and PG? No. But for longterm storage, that's where you should keep nic.

Late to the party, but I'll give it a shot before starting a new thread;

I am currently buying 100mg/ml bottles with nicotine. They come in the mentioned plastic bottles.

I have a feeling it's going to be illegal to import in the near-ish future as I am living in Norway. In our neighbour country Sweden, even smoking in public areas is illegal now so ye.. a bit paranoid. The government doesn't seem to distinguish between smoking and vaping - so I expect laws to get stricter (I guess it will always be possible to get some nic through the mail, but probably not from my trusted vendors, and also fines and customs issues..).

Googl'ing around gives me different opinions on how long I can actually store my nicotine in my freezer. Some say years, others recommend to not order more than necessary. Any opinions? Do you think 2 - 3 years + of storing nicotine in the plastic bottles in the freezer will degrade it? Possibly even longer. Wondering wether to keep stocking up or not.

nicotine itself is no problem, as long as its kept cold, sealed, away from sunlight. Heat/Oxygen/Sunlight contribute to oxidizing the nicotine into cotinine.

Ive used 5 year old nic with no problems. Stored it in glass bottles and seal the lid with electrical tape, kept in freezer.

I was just wondering if HDPE plastic would leach chemicals, but Ive done a bit of reading, and there's little chance of that.

So just put your nic into the freezer when it comes in. It will last for many years.
