Hot Seat Sunday AMA with staybert
submitted about 6 years ago by staybertThe Soda Man

Hot Seat Sunday

So, this is an idea for a weekly thread… Basically it's a AMA thread with a twist – the 'victim' gets to name who is next up in the rotation. It was started by /u/juthinc in this thread here and it was continued by /u/isuamadog in here , and continued here by /u/humanpuck, and there by /u/eyemakepizza, /u/ID10-T AMA is here , /u/vApe_Escape right here , /u/mlNikon somewhere in the area of here, /u/EdibleMalfunction's AMA resides here, and /u/Foment-Life's most certainly right here, /u/Kittybit8 's viking rune script right here.

There are some rules:

try picking someone who hasn't gone yet

it has to be someone who actively posts here

no dead people (ie: notcharlesmanson isn't eligible)

preferably a name that people recognize, 'regular poster' means someone who is a) alive and b) has posted in the last three months

Complete the FAQ before posting

if you do the hot seat, you can add up to three names to the list of people who are potential victims. Now, in the interest of saving some likely to be asked questions from coming up multiple times, I've included a FAQ below. With that said (and remembering to not repeat questions from the FAQ) fire away. Oh, and next time, it's someone's turn and you will be pm'ed regarding your participation. (possibly /u/AlfredPudding /u/modivin /u/odiedoodah /u/Apexified /u/enyawreklaw /u/folkart2000 /u/shyndo).

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How'd you get your handle?
Well, it’s a bit immature, but so was I 16-17 years ago… I just thought that “Steibert” which is a (not very common) surname where I live, probably is the ugliest surname you could have. So I basically just took that and spelled it the way it’s pronounced, since it kind of works in English too.

How long have you been mixing for?
Been mixing for just over 2 years now. Started off by just buying a few local brand single flavors, then I found this subreddit and down the rabbit hole it went.

Current flavor or profile obsession?
The two profiles I always come back to are any fruit with WS-23 and Pistachio RY4. Lately I’ve been on a citrus trip, especially anything with FLV Citrus Soda since it pairs really well with almost any fruit, especially berries. Lemon, lime and florals seem to be my next destination.

Most/Least disappointing flavors that was/not as expected?
INW Grape, CAP Sweet Mango and TFA Pineapple Juicy are ones that I probably won’t touch ever again. The two first especially is quite widely used, but just not my cup of tea at all. INW Grape is just way too sweet, and CAP Sweet Mango is like floral flavored puke to me.

Mixing Milestone?
For me, everything changed as soon as I joined the DYI_eJuice discord. I’d been tinkering on and off with some recipe ideas, but the discord format is just perfect for mixing as you can get feedback almost instantly on ideas you throw out there.

My most mixed recipe Citraspberry Soda started off with me sharing my first draft, /u/EdibleMalfunction suggested CAP Lemon Lime which both works great with FLV Citrus Soda to make the soda part more interesting and to make the berries pop. /u/humanpuck suggested adding FLV Boysenberry to support the INW Raspberry. A few days later I got those flavors to try in the mix and it turned out great. I think it’s a perfect example on how kind most people in this sub/discord are and how powerful/important the feedback part of mixing is.

I also got some great tips from /u/shyndo as I was developing PistachiOMG based on his idea around Karl Custard, such as making control batches/bottles to try out different variations of recipes. This is something I do on a daily basis now, but as a new mixer this was invaluable advice.

Recipes you admire/love?
Viserion by /u/ID10-T, Cardinal by Fear, Peanut Butter Shake by heatho72, The Trinity Vanilla Ice Cream by /u/eyemakepizza are top on the most yummy list. I haven’t tried 007 Cola by /u/AlfredPudding or Dune by /u/kindground, but just by looking at the flavors used I am very intrigued/impressed.

White whale?
An Orange Soda. It’s much harder than you think to make citruses blend together as nicely as most other flavors do. Also I have yet to find that perfect orange flavor, the “LB VIC” of oranges so to speak.

How would you describe your mixing style?
I think my style is a bit different, as I don’t live in the US or UK, which means locally I can only get TFA/CAP/INW/FLV/MB. I do order from Chefs every now and then, but I tend to pick up flavors that are easier to get ahold of in my area. That being said, I think that reflects my mixing style, as I have grown used to working with whatever I have in hand, rather than what’s actually considered “the best”. I usually start off with a particular flavor in mind, then sketch up a few different recipes and mix up some 10ML testers. After throwing that particular flavor in a few different directions, I usually get a good idea of where I want to take that flavor or recipe.

Advice for new mixers?
Don't rush into your own recipe development. Start mixing renowned recipes, as many different as you can. This will make you get a good understanding of 1) what you like and 2) how different flavors are used and at what percentages. Before buying new flavors, make sure to do your homework, read flavor reviews, watch Noted, check other highly rated recipes with that flavor or profile. The more you know about the flavors you are working with, the better your first drafts will be, which will result less failure. You will fail a lot, but doing these things will probably make you fail less often and thus less hate-vaping.

If you are really serious about getting in to your own recipe development, make sure to have a scale, an RDA and then start doing single flavor testing.

When you start your first drafts, be sure to start at low percentages and with few flavors, as you can always add more, but you can't remove (without having to start over). Vape that for a bit, then keep adding stuff until you are satisfied with the direction it is taking. Your testers will not be 100% accurate percentage wise, but just make sure to write down your estimated changes and your next version will definitley be better.

BONUS RECIPE

For all you folks who made it this far in the post. Just something I threw together today, but I like it a lot. My sprite base (FLV Citrus Soda & CAP Lemon Lime) works with pretty much any fruit you throw at it. The vanilla swirl takes the sharp notes off both the citruses and apples and gives it a nice vanilla touched sweetness.

Maaaaan I loved alien blue. I upgraded my iPhone and it wasn’t available in the store anymore, so I had to switch to narwhal. It was a sad day.

If you could take a trip to anywhere in tbr solar system, where would it be?

2 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

Probably Saturn. Always been fascinated by the rings and the fact that they are just a few meters thick. Wouldn't mind taking a closer look at that. I love tripping here on earth though.

1 points

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 6 years agoI found my thrill on Blueberry Hill

Mine is close to that. Titan!

2 points

by thelateoctoberabout 6 years agoTobacconist

Dude titan would be awesome. NASA just announced a few days ago they are sending a drone to look for signs / origin of life on titan. Going to the poles, so we won't get to see those awesome methane lakes, but still super cool. Europa would be my choice, probably. As long as I could take a submarine.

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

Damn that's a lot better if you want to actually see saturn. I wanna swap!

As you officially are my neighbor, what's the best thing you like about Denmark?

2 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

Wow, there's too many good things about Denmark. Copenhagen is an awesome city that I visit at least once a year, Christiania is really cool (not just the weed thing but the whole community and history behind it), Mikkeller makes the best beer in Europe and their bar is awesome, rød pølse, and this guy of course ;)

how many flavors do you actually have?

3 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

I think I'm around 120 right now. Not much compared to many other mixers, but I'm poor and also had a bit of a realisation one time when I spent too much on random flavorings, that I should really only buy flavors if I see it as a must have for a recipe I'm developing. It also makes me try different combinations that I would never try if I had more flavors available. I do also take pride in how well researched my flavor list is, I feel like I can at least start to tackle most of the profiles I'm interested in.

What is does your perfect swedish midsummer feats contain?

I'm not the right person to ask because I actively avoid that shit. I hate pickled herring and I hate drinking just because it is a certain date.

Huh?

2 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

Yeah I have a few people that can't handle the booze very well in my family, so yeah, kind of made me stop drinking too, at least for "big events". I love having a beer every now and then though, but thats it.

Well, I'm poor so I can't really afford all those wierdass flavors you are using! I do mix every recipe that I can from other people. I do feel a bit bad though, your 2 yogurt recipies are broissant should be doable quite soon :)

What's your favorite part of collaborative mixing? What's the worst part?

1 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

I love everything about collaborative mixing! Especially being able to create something together, and then enjoying it together. Worst part is that you need quite a lot of flavors to be able to do get a bit of "creative freedom", so to speak.

Would you rather fight 100 duck-sized horses, or one horse-sized duck?

2 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

Probably 100 duck-sized horses, I'm an ex soccer player and have practiced a bit of muay thai, so I feel pretty confident in my kicking game. Not sure how I would beat a big ass duckhorse.

How about100 duck-sized Alexander Gustafssons, or one regular-sized Alexander Gustafsson?

2 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

Haha, well I know for sure the regular sized would probably break my neck in one shot, the duck-sized I could at least frenetically jump and try to stomp to death.

Where did you first get the idea that you could mix your own juice?

2 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

I was browsing some juices online and found a site which had a brief "DIY guide". They also sold nic shots, VG/PG and some flavors, so I figured I'd give it a try with a single flavor strawberry milkshake. 20% flavoring was what they recommended. Good times.

Are you one of those people with questionable enough taste to like black licorice?

1 points

by Xase42about 6 years ago

There's nothing wrong with licorice, just give into the dark side (we have cookies). :)

1 points

by juthincabout 6 years ago

But they're shitty cookies like those plain yellowish white crap ones, not good cookies like PB Chocolate Chunk or Molasses Macadamia or Chocolate Dipped Macaroons.

1 points

by Xase42about 6 years ago

Oh no these are oatmeal raisin, the best kind (imho) although the chocolate dipped macaroons sound tasty.

1 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

Yeah I love black licorice! By far my favourite type of candy.

1 points

by juthincabout 6 years ago

It's not so much candy as "individuals-with-taste repellant" tho.

1 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

Haha, we have a saying here in Sweden.. the taste is like the butt (split). Doesn't make sense directly translated but I guess you guys say "one man's meat is another man's poison".

Do flavors maketh mixer?

1 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

Tough question. I think I have learned more about mixing by having a relatively low count, since I've mixed stuff I'd probably never ever think about trying if I had more flavors. It also forces you to really get to know your flavors, by putting them in different situations or combinations.

But I mean of course you will have more freedom and probably create more yummy stuff if you have many great flavors. But I think my definition of "making it" is to have as many other people try my recipies as possible. I know I'm probably not going to get any awards or make anything groundbreaking, but I get a lot of joy by seeing new mixers testing my stuff and getting a better vaping experience.

What's your favorite simple mix?

1 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

I'm assuming simple = few number of flavors.

I already mentioned Cardinal earlier, but I have to admit Mustard Milk holds a special place in my heart, even though it's old. Mainly because it was the only juice I brought with me on one of the best vacations I've had. So it gives me good memories.

I'm a big fan of ID10-T's 1-2-3 concept, and my own 1-2-3 Octarine is pretty cool if I may say so myself.

1 points

by isuamadogabout 6 years agoRenaissance Mixer

do you have a go to "im out the door whip this up quick' mix?

1 points

by staybertabout 6 years agoThe Soda Man

I have a whole cupboard of like 50-60 different mixes so that will probably never happen :D But I made this recipe kind of for that purpose though: ez Pistachio RY4 . Even though it's best after a steep I can def vape it straight away. I'll never get bored of the Pistachio RY4 profile.
