Im new to mixing (1 month in now). I recently mixed a recipe for a few people and got feedback that it got harsh after a week (I am now getting that too in my batch) and after reviewing some of my testing notes of other flavors / recipes I have made I am seeing a common harshness that seems to just come and go. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this?
My Nic:
48mg PurNic E-Liquid Nicotine - 150ml / PG Based
The recipe I mixed up and got feedback on:
Mixed on 6/14
70/30 3MG
CAP – Lemon Lime – 3%
VT – Fizzy Sherbert – 2%
TFA – Cherry Extract – 1%
Flavor notes from single flavor testing CAP Lemon Meringue Pie @10% 70/30 3MG (showing the random harshness)
Steep time: overnight
Device: Profile RDA 50w
Thoughts: mild lemon on inhale, creamy fluffy lemon exhale. Semi sweet.
Steep time: 1 week
Device: Citadel RDA .20 50w
Thoughts: Lemon has blended more with the Meringue on inhale giving it more of a creamy pie taste, exhale more prominent, not really getting any crust taste. Throat hit dramatically increased making it a very harsh vape.
Steep time 2 weeks
Device: Citadel RDA .20 50w
Thoughts: sweetness has come in along with a soft thin crust. No harshness.
Steep time 3 weeks
Device: Goon25 .38 144w
Thoughts: Not much change from 2 week steep, lemon continues to dull as sweetness and crust pick up. No harshness
You need to try a batch without nicotine
I will mix one up. It would probably prove useful to have an unflavored 70/30 3mg and see if it appears there as well huh
Yes, but if its not harsh without nic, you know where the issue lies
The only time I ever get an excessive throat hit is when get down to the last 10-15ml of a 100ml bottle and I haven't been shaking it in between fills. The nic seems to find its way to the bottom of the bottle. It by no means separates it just feels way stronger on my throat.
Those testing notes... You did use fresh wick every time?
No, usually blow dry then put unflavored pg or vg, blow dry again and then flavor test. In the example of harshness I am getting now though this 321 sprite has been the only flavor I have had in a fresh wick, been vaping it for almost a week and harshness is just setting in. Going to see if it goes away like it did with other flavors.
Ok
Just was thinking if there was oxidized nic in the wick (very possible under normal conditions, but unlikely in your case) or contamination from a harsh flavor (like CAP Juicy razor blades... Which is again unlikely in your description) that one of those could explain the issue.
Did you read the sidebar?
I did, the sheer "randomness" of the harshness is why I made a post. If this was a certain recipe or harshness came after a set time, it would be in line with the troubleshooting guide. Wanted to see if anyone has had specific experience with harshness that seems to come and go.
Shit dude delete your post and run! IT'S THE SIDE BAR POLICE! DIDN'T YO DUMN ASS KNOW THAT ASKING A POLITE QUESTION IN AN INTERNET FORUM IS ILLEGAL IF THERES A VAGUELY RELATED PIECE OF ADVICE ON PAGE 40.OF THE SIDEBAR MATERIAL! GOD DAMN YOU STUPID YOU GOING JAIL MAN IMMA STEAL YOUR WIFE!
"Side bar police" is actually a pretty accurate description of what a moderator does. But the "vaguely related piece" is actually not 40 pages in or even all that vague; it's the 5th link down and called Troubleshooting Harsh Juice

Flooding
As in the atomizer was flooded? Im confident this was not the case, but I'll over squonk right now and give it a go....
I've had random harshness and a quick dab of a Qtip in the RTA immediately fixed it. Might be tougher in some setups.
Possibility anyways, and one rarely discussed ✌️
So I over squonked, then dripped some on just to be sure...and while being mindful of what you said, I found it was harsh and that the hits before it went dry were not harsh. Good info.
I don't see how this will play with my tank users though. As they change juice and its no longer harsh...
Thank you!
In his flavour notes ConcreteRiver says there is 'light' throat hit for TFA Cherry Extract. This, and the fact that the rest of the mix is citrus based - might lead to harshness for people who haven't been vaping for a long time or who have sensitivities.
Considering he's using the Cherry well below normal (2-3 s more frequent for it) I really doubt it s at all the culprit. And the lemons aren't reall rough examples either. However, if he is sensitive to citrus, then anything is possible.
