Flavor of the Week Giving it a shot and Shaking Up something exSTRAW special: Mixed Drinks!!!
submitted over 6 years ago by ID10-TThe Kingmaker

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is... MIXED DRINKS (Piña Colada, Mojito, Daiquiri, Margarita, etc)

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested! If you're not interested in the upcoming FOTWs, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are basically video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Next week's flavor will be: Passionfruit

The week after that will be: Rice & Horchata

The week after that will be: Guava

The week after that will be: Cinnamon

The week after that will be: Pudding & Bread Pudding

The week after that will be: Cucumber

The week after that will be: Dragonfruit & Starfruit & Snakefruit

The week after that will be: Lychee

Oh, and do shooters count for mixed drinks? A B52 perhaps?

And any ideas on what the Reggie Jackson flavor would be? (Ok, maybe only oldtimer baseball fans - although are any baseball fans not oldtimers anymore?- will get that reference.)

Hmm. Have to check. I think Shisha Mai Tai is in my backlog of flavors. And possibly dogfather.

So I’m hoping this is on topic as it is inherently a drink, and a mix of sorts. I just seriously have been having trouble with this recipe and can’t seem to get it to pan out. Been working on it for about 3 months now. I read something about a Bourbon and berries mix and thought “Hmm-this sounds nice.” Little did I know it would eat up a ton of my time, sanity, and well, ingredients as well😆

It really all started after tasting Coop34’s Kiwi Bourbon. And if I’m really being honest it’s before that when I tried his Raspberry Custard as this was the recipe that made me want to try everything he created. Damn you Coop. Now I’m really new to mixing. 9 months now I believe, but I’ve created some delicious mixes. Mixes that I myself like but nothing that I’m confident enough to share just yet. I digress and apologize. Here’s my issue.

Kentucky Bourbon TPA was my(MY) obvious choice as it is smooth and when I take it up to say 3% even, it will steep out to where I like it after a few weeks even if it is a little much on snv. The issue I’m seeking to have is,where Coop34’s mix was so simple and delicious with only 3 different concentrates, mine is getting muddled up and muting the bourbon (I think, not sure) because I can’t seem to get that bright berry and alcoholic bourbon taste that I get from that Kiwi Bourbon joint. From what I’ve read,it could be due to all the em in the strawberries I’m using. I just don’t know anymore. What I do know is when I use these flavors in other recipes they are sweet and vibrant and present just a good vape. The second I throw them in with this bourbon (and more recently a mix of TPA Bourbon at 2% with Fa Wine Champagne at 1.75%) everything gets muddied and I can no longer taste the different flavors. I’m doing something wrong but just can’t put my finger on it.

What follows is my current recipe, which hasn’t been too bad,but far from what I’d call done.

INW Cactus-0.5% FLV Cream-1.5% FA Forest Fruit-3% INW Shisha Strawberry-2% CAP Sweet Currant-2% FA Wine Champagne-1.75% TFA Kentucky Bourbon-2% FA Vienna Cream-2%

1.5% nic at 70VG

Thanks to anyone who took the time to read that. It’s a lot to go over.

TLDR: Please take a look at the recipe I’ve been pulling my hair out over and tell me what I’m doing wrong because everything is muted and muddled and I want to have a nice Bourbon and berry vape that’s mine and that I created with the help of expert mixers-looking at you Coop34 🤗

Why isn’t my recipe percentages dropping down like I fucking typed them out? I wouldn’t create the recipe like a paragraph for others to read. Dammit. Sorry guys🤨

If you want to start a new line - the line above it must end with TWO spaces and a carriage return.

Thanks man. What’s a carriage return?

  • INW Cactus-0.5%
  • FLV Cream-1.5%
  • FA Forest Fruit-3%
  • INW Shisha Strawberry-2%
  • CAP Sweet Currant-2%
  • FA Wine Champagne-1.75%
  • TFA Kentucky Bourbon-2%
  • FA Vienna Cream-2%

We'll see what /u/coop34 thinks but one thing that jumps out to me is that FLV Cream is a pretty good blending agent and you're using a ton of it. Makes sense that things would get all kinds of muddled up. Also, there's just a lot going on there. Definitely try it without the FLV Cream and Cactus, but I'd break it down to the barest bones and then build it back up. You want mixed berry with bourbon and (from the looks of it) some kind of creamy base? Try 3% Forest Fruit, 2% Kentucky Bourbon, 2% Vienna Cream. Give it about five days to steep the yuck off that vienna cream and then try it. From there, assess what else you think it needs most and mix up future versions no more than one additional ingredient at a time. That first version probably won't be muddled but some future version will. If you only add one new ingredient back at a time you'll find the culprit ingredient. But if all of that is too much work, at least try it without Cactus and FLV Cream in it. And in the future, maybe don't go over 1% on the FLV Cream. That's as much as you should ever need of that stuff.

Hey thanks. I actually get depressed when I start running low on your Mango Blossom Macaron recipe. That recipe taught me that you don’t need to have huge percentages to get awesome flavor. I’ll explain. When I first read your recipe I thought 2% Cap Sug cookie was a joke. I always noticed it being used so much higher that there was no way I was going to taste it. So,I mixed your recipe to what I thought were “my tastes” and the outcome was weird. I didn’t like your recipe (Don’t hit me-I understand the ignorance of that comment as well as how much of a douch I was being 🤣). Fast forward to a month later when I learned some more and decided to try your recipe as you wrote it out. Wow. I could now taste all the flavors. It tasted like a little cookie or macaron(Never had one to my knowledge but I know what they are) and this recipe is now something I cherish for so many reasons. What it taught me as well as how beautiful it vapes. Layered so nicely. It helped me to want to one day mix something so great, and to learn how to do just that. So first and foremost please know how much you’ve helped me without ever knowing it.

Now that I got that out of the way. I totally had an idea that the way I was using or overusing these concentrates was the main reason I found so many issues with this. I’m going to take your advice and mix my next version up exactly the way you describe because I’d be stupid to just shrug that off. My only hope now is that it isn’t a finished product at that point because I want a mix I can call my own🤣🤣🤣. Joking of course, but this recipe has been so close so many times and after hearing what you have to say I can confirm that my biggest issue has been my inability to just be patient. I will type and calculate all the ingredients that I think will go together, quickly mix, then vape, and give the product maybe 2 days max before deciding it isn’t working and starting over. Your saying I’m better off starting at the beginning and slowly adding an ingredient at a time? This is where I’ve been really really lazy then. I want that instant gratification and I’ve really screwed myself in the long run. Lesson learned.

Ok I think I’ve learned a lot here. Thanks again for your help in this. I hope it’s ok to reach out in a couple weeks to revisit this and see where I’m at. There is no substitute for time in mixing. That is the lesson I’ve learned today.

Oh and real quick. What do you mean by the “yuck” off Vienna Cream? I never tasted anything but what appears to be the cream filling from an oreo cookie.

Also when you say cream flv is a good blending agent, could you possibly elaborate a bit? Not trying to take up a ton of your time, but now that I got you, I’m feeling a bit like a human sponge and want to learn🤣

So... Anyone got a decent Bourbon Sour recipe, or do I need to make it? Still working on a Zombie... Margarita is probably not possible... Maybe a Cherry Daiquiri would be easy enough. And still waiting on our resident ginger specialist to post the Moscow Mule. Maybe by end of the week, I'll have another cider/cocktail ready to go.

2 points

by ID10-Tover 6 years agoThe Kingmaker

You need to make all of that. Why do you think Margarita is not possible?

2 points

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

Salt.

I can experiment with saline and FA Polar Blast, I suppose...

And let's agree to not try Caesar or Bloody Mary recipes...

Just salt the rim of your drip tip like a margarita glass

Well, I'm away from my supplies most of this week. But if you're interested in alpha-testing, this is that cider... If anyone wants to give it a try, and provide feedback...

Moscow Mule in the pipeline? I'll hold off my next chefs order until that will surface. And YES, please make a Bourbon Sour, that would be great. :P

The closest thing to a daiquiri in vaping form that I managed to throw together was this, it wasn't that bad but tbh all alcohol/booze flavors I tried are somehow missing the boozyness.

2 points

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

Cherry Daiquiri... Figure start with 1.5% LA Cherry. That'll give cherry and white rum flavor. FA Jamaican rum, obviously. VT light rum to bridge the gaps between rums and add booziness. Then WS-23 and FA Polar blast to turn it into a slushy.

And this is what I'd base my bourbon sour on. If I can nail down the orange mix I made once and forgot, the rest should be easy. Just spitballin'... This is probably a decent start... I need to see if I can find all of my flavors when i get back, so i can test that.

3 points

by n0tveganover 6 years agoStill Believes in Coconut Extra

VT light rum is noted, thanks for that. I know you said cherry, but I didn't play with those a lot yet and was hoping for exactly the input you gave me with VT light rum.

I don't know this exact brand, but bourbon and orange are by default made for each other and I'd love a good vape form of it. My stash seems to be getting there, I only need three flavors for the B.S. recipe, please keep the name, cracks me up. Would you mind giving me your opinion on INW Shisha Punch?

Aside from the absent salt and liquor notes, this one is actually quite a convincing margarita vape. But I have no idea why you would care as it’s a strawberry ejuice. https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/19343#krucial_strawberry_margarita_by_krucial

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

The only reason to drink a margarita is to get riggity riggity wrecked, son. So lackng the booze is kinda completely missing the point. And ruining a drink by adding strawberry....? I can't find words to express the degree of wrongness of doing such a thing.

So a colleague who didn't last very long at work thought I should pick up a ginger flavor and he wanted to take a crack at making a recipe even though he never has (he has some beer brewing exp tho). He made a orange ginger and it was super good. Then he got terminated and I forgot all about the ginger. But MOSCOW MULE!!!!

This is the ginger I have. Never single flavor tested, but that recipe he made really was tasty.

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

Ooh, a lot of people seem to be loving the idea of a moscow mule.

Here's basically my thinking:

1% VT Fizzy Sherbet, .25% TFA Lime Tahity (the lime and fizz)

1% menthol, .25% WS-23, .25% FA Polar Blast (the mint and frosty nature)

1.5% CAP Hibiscus, .2% INW Cactus (make it syrupy and wetter)

3% VT Vodka (the reason Moscow is in the name)

...and then the ginger. Need something closer to a candied ginger than a dry spice, even with the additives, I think. A ginger syrup flavor would be ideal.

The reviews on bullcity for that ginger make it sound like it might work.

I'll test it.

Gin & Tonic - have no idea how to even get the flavor of tonic water (lime would be easy) and maybe some small hint of gin.

not sure if that is of any help for you, but here is a gin & tonic recipe I made in my first days of diy (I am still a beginner). I got a few positive feedbacks from friends, so I guess it is vapeable.

|Gin & Tonic||| |:-|:-|:-| |Cucumber|FA|0.5%| |VaPimms|FA|3.5%| |Watermelon|FLV|0.1%| |Zen Garden|FA|0.3%|

Steep time suggested: about 2-3 weeks

Ratio suggested PG/VG: 30/70

Cooling: optional (I used Koolada, because I had nothing else back then)

Cucumber and Watermelon, huh? Very interesting! I'll have to make a sample of that!

If I remember right I put the watermelon to support/boost the cucumber.

Maybe I should make a v2 of that recipe one day..

This is something I'm working on. Inspired by those Camel Margarita Mixer cigarettes from 2003.

Saline and WS-23 will be incorporated in the next version.
