A question I mustachio: Are you ready for the Flavor of the Week to Be Pistachio?
submitted over 6 years ago by ID10-TThe Kingmaker

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is... PISTACHIO!

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested! If you're not interested in the upcoming FOTWs, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are basically video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Here's one I made a while back with FA Pistachio.

FA Pistachio is interesting stuff. If you can auto-ramp your wattage, it tastes different every draw as the coil gets hotter ...

That looks great. I gotta sub the Pistachio though, I'll do TFA 3%

I've never tried that flavor, but someone else said they did that sub and liked it. Good luck!

Wonder Flavours - Pistachio Cream I use it at 2-3% for Solo/Base but Needs 1-2 week steep to become a Coherent Pistachio Cream has a kind of green pistachio harshness before steep... I love it in u/humanpuck 's I Kheer U recipe @ 0.75%... This flavor definately needs a steep though the longer you steep this the more the green pistachio harshness dies down and what your left with is a very very tasty pistachio cream

I mixed this up and let it steep for a month and was a little disappointed. I'm going to try it again without the super sweet, because I feel like anything I've tried with super sweet seems incredibly muted no matter how little I use.

u/ID10-T gave me this recipe long ago and it’s been one of my ADV’s since the first time I vaped it. I now make it in 750ml Grey Goose bottles and always have lots of it steeping because it gets better and better the longer it ages.

If you like Pistachio or Butterscotch you gotta try this shit...

  • 3% FW Butterscotch Ripple
  • 2% TPA Pistachio
  • 4% CAP Vanilla Custard

steeped as long as possible, at least a month

3 points

by kuri_sanTouover 6 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

That looks lovely. I'd wait a month for that (try)

I think u/Shyndo 's recipie Karl Custard should be mentioned here. Using TFA Pistachio at 8% (when the "norm" seem to be around 3%), in my opninion is groundbreaking.

I made my own version based around his original idea; PistachiOMG if anyone would like to try it.

I tell you what. That PistachiOMG already looks awesome. Figure out how much DIYFS Holy Holy Grail RY4 that would need to do the same "work" in the recipe that TFA RY4 Dub is doing (I'm guessing 6 to 8% and just not giving a damn what that does to the overall flavor %), and you got yourself a deal.

Thanks! Unfortunately I don't have Holy Grail RY4 as it's not easily available where I live, so can't test it right now. Also I am not sure if that cointains any EM, so that it will get the same masking effect as RY4 Double does? Just based off the average percentages I would say 6% sounds about right. If it actually does the same job I'm sure it will be even better with Holy Grail, seems like an amazing flavor from what I have read and heard.

I think it's made out of RY4 Double mixed with their Cafe Napoleon flavor at about 50/50

I love TFA Pistachio as a single flavor. It's also really useful in low amounts to add a "creamy" element to recipes, particularly fruits. One caution, however: it really grows stronger with a steep, so in a mix sometimes less is more.
