tobaccos for dark berries
submitted over 6 years ago by JTHerman

I’m planning to start experimenting with different variations on a dark berry flavored tobacco mix. Would those of you who know the tobacco flavors suggest some possibilities? Based on what I’ve read 7 Leaves Ultimate might come to mind, but I’ve used that with Fuji and I think 7 Leaves is probably better for brighter tasting fruit. So for dark berries and maybe some walnut, I’m thinking of TFA Western and INW Am4A, with SOHO as a base. Does that sound right? Any other tobaccos I should consider? I like the sound of “dark and boozy,” but I don’t want a tobacco so strong it would cover over the fruit.

INW Black for Pipe is nice with dark berries. Am4a would probably be pretty good too. I think Gold Ducat could work with it as well. 7 Leaves is probably worth a shot. Worst that can happen is it doesn’t taste good. I think TFA DK Tobacco would probably work better with dark fruits than Western.

This is a recent one I threw together. This is the taste I was chasing when I made this one. The FLV Black Currant was the dark berry that I really needed.

Inawera’s “For Pipe” line is worth considering.

HS PR Tobacco and DV Virginia is up there as the best for me. Straight tobaccos

Thanks. I’ll look into those two.

Inawera black for pipe, black cherry for pipe. Gold ducat may also work if you push it higher. It changes a bit at higher percentages and becomes really complex.

Gold Ducat sounds interesting. I might save it for a different mix, maybe even a standalone.

I'll page /u/ChemicalBurnVictim just to check if he's still alive and /u/juthinc because I know he'll have recommendations too.

FLV Red Burley could be one of your components. TFA Western is fine, but does give a very leathery taste in it's initial use, so you'd have to vape it a while to get a real idea of how it tastes. Especially true if you mix it. As to strength, couldn't you just increase or decrease the percentage to find what suits you?? A dark, heavy tobacco might be ideal if you don't over-do it.

FLV Virginia would probably go well with a dark berry. Or you could throw berries on top of /u/chemicalburnvictim's Native DOG. Or... well, a number of the 'for pipe' flavors could also work.

I subbed SM for LA Burley because I ran out and it was good.

Going to have to disagree with /u/ChemicalBurnVictim here and say that dark for pipe is better than black for pipe(in general) for dark berries.

I do agree that Gold Ducat would be great and Am4a probably would too. Kent might also work well.

TFA DK tobacco is a weird one in my book and it took me a while to like it. If you have had prarie from bigglesworth or Virgil's Patience from Gordona you know what DK tastes like as its the predominate taste there. It does tend to stick to your wicks though which is one issue I have with it.

I don't know about specific tobaccos off hand but cigar flavors tend to go well with berry. FA Cigar Passion is really good and pairs nicely with vanilla too.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I think I’ll start with Am4A and Gold Ducat. I’ve used Black for Pipe in a couple other mixes, and I’d like for this one to stand out from those. There are so many good tobaccos... the task of flavor testing all of them seems so daunting that so far, I’ve just relied on other people’s flavor reviews. Someday I suppose I’m going to have to bite the bullet.

This is what I ended up trying:

5% INW Black for Pipe

3% INW Gold Ducat

2% INW Am4A

1.5% FA Raspberry

1.5% FA Blackcurrant

1% FA Walnut

1% FA Oak Wood

0.5% FLV Wood Spice

0.5% INW Rhubarb

8 drops FA Bitter Wizard

It’s good, but even with 10% of the mix being tobaccos I taste the fruit most prominently. Next time I mix it I think I’ll take the fruit and walnut out and see what the tobaccos and wood flavors tastes like.

What’s changed is that since I dreamed this mix up, I’ve discovered tobacco mixes that are so good, they don’t need fruit or dessert flavors to cover them up. It’s like using cream to cover up the taste of bad coffee. When I started vaping tobaccos it was RY4 and SOHO blends in which you wouldn’t want to taste the “tobaccos” by themselves. Thanks to my discovery of tobacco mixes by u/chemicalburnvictim and others, I no longer want fruit covering over a really good mix.

I’m going to be heartbroken if they ban vaping next month. I’m only just now getting knowledgeable enough to put first-rate mixes together,
