Month after month after we pick the recipe we want judged the judges come in knock us over the head and there is only one woman standing."

##Noted > The three hosts /u/mlNikon, /u/CheebaSteeba, and /u/ID10-T (and usually one guest) talk extensively about last week's Flavor of the Week. They each try a handful of flavors (or many more than that) and give their impressions while often sharing a few recipes that include those flavors.

##The Fog Vlog An ensemble cast of South African mixers who do live mixes, flavor reviews and mixer reviews where they review several recipes from one mixer.

I'm going to hop in here with two essential flavors that I've really fallen in love with recently with a little explanation of why they are, at least for me, essential to my style of mixing.

INW Dragonfruit
I think this one is essential in the same way that TPA Dragonfruit is essential. However, I think INW's option has a lot more going on with it. First, it still works beautifully as an emulsifier for fruit-forward mixes. It adds some depth to berries, brings another level of brightness to citrus, and works really well to bridge together some of the more strange tropical flavors. The difference with INW is that there is this extra layer of creaminess to it that we don't get from TPA. At the risk of sounding like "one of THOSE mixers," it has some chew to it. This one works great if you want to add some extra depth and dimension to candy recipes, especially those that try to emulate taffy or other chewy candies. Get this one.

Suggested percentages : 0.5% - 1% for a support, 1.5% - 2% for a more prominent role. This gets a little too floral for my liking above 3%.

VT Fizzy Sherbet
Okay, so I got this one a bit late, and my biggest regret was that I only picked up the smallest bottle to make sure I'd like it. I am definitely going to be getting this one in bulk for my next flavor order. To put it simply, it is one of the best "multi-flavor" concentrates available today. It's this ambiguous mix of citrus, soda, sugar, and candy. It works in so many different applications, and I have yet to find a situation where this flavor won't add something exciting to a mix. Obviously, I wouldn't recommend adding this to tobaccos or bakeries, but for anything fruit, candy, beverage, or POSSIBLY even some light cream recipes, this is a must-have. Works as a single flavor, works as a supporting note to any fruit you can imagine, and adds more depth to some of the more complex recipes. Just get it, thank me later.

Suggested percentages : 1.5% - 2% for a support, 3% - 5% for a more prominent role. I haven't found a single off note in this concentrate, even as you push it up. The only real thing you start to lose as you boost it up is some of that "soda carbonation" feel, it ends up becoming more of a sugar bomb at higher percentages.

My stash, at #150 flavours currently.

Personal 'essentials'? I'm going to try and avoid suggesting common classics like FA Meringue or JF Biscuit.

  • FLV Mango
  • FE Sweet Rice
  • WF Crispy Wafer

I'll take any suggestions really (: I tend to get very paralysed by choice at this point, so I end up just making the same old familiars, and feeling guilty about my unopened bottles.

I dig it. Thank you for putting the work in. If you want I can create a page in the wiki and we can copy over what you’ve got and update it as you add more.

Ok, leaving out tobaccos (otherwise just get every FLV and INW tobacco, and you've got most of what you need, with only a little deadwood) I would consider the following 'essential':

WS-23
FA Polar Blast
TFA Honeysuckle
CAP Hibiscus
FA Marzipan
FA Fuji
INW Cactus
INW Lemon Mix
LA Lemonade
FLV Boysenberry
FLV Milk Chocolate
FLV Bourbon
INW Grapes
INW Cherries
TFA Cherry Extract
FW Blueberry TFA Blueberry Extra FA Bilberry
FA Gin
VT Botanical Gin
VT Fizzy Sherbet
VT Bourbon
VT Scotch
VT Banana Custard
VT Chocolate Mousse
FLV Coconut
FLV Sweet Coconut
HS Australian Chocolate

In what recipe have you most enjoyed VT Choc Mousse? I've been fiddlin a fair bit with VT Chocolate Milk, HS Australian Chocolate and MB Glamour Chocolate recently.

I used it in a few different things like this. Just looking through some of the other recipes it's in... if I had the ingredients, I'd be interested to try the chocolate avacado one. There's also a chocolate english toffee that looks intriguing.

I've never tried a tobacco concentrate - after reading the flavor review FLV Red Burley actually sounds a little enticing. I like that it's not a full-on tobacco - and has subtle dark notes. Having never tried it, I'm wondering how it would go with things like INW Cherries / FLV Milk & Honey / and (sorry) FA Vanilla Bourbon. Actually, maybe even something like 3% FLV Red Burley, 1.5% VT Carrot Cake would be nice.

Have you tried VT Chocolate Milk - and if so does it have a similar chocolate flavor to VT Chocolate Mousse?

by staybertover 6 years ago

Not a vet by any means, have only been mixing for just over a year, but these are the flavors I have had to order more than once or use almost every mix sesh:

TFA Vanilla Swirl
TFA Cheesecake Graham Crust
TFA Dragonfruit
TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream / FW Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
FW Blueberry / TFA Blueberry Extra / FA Bilberry
FW Blood Orange
FA Forest Fruit Mix
FA Fuji
FA Fresh Cream
CAP Sugar Cookie
INW Cactus
HS Australian Chocolate
HS French Vanilla Ice Cream
JF Biscuit
JF Yellow Cake
WS-23

Haven't had the chance to try any of the VT or LB flavors yet, as they are not easily available where I live. But I can see a few of them being essential!

You want me to suggest one or more flavors I consider essential? Like for me, personally? Or just the flavors I think would be the most essential to the broadest number of people?

3 points

by Apexifiedover 6 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Essentially what I’m talking about, and you would know this better than most, is when you’re recommending recipes for peoples flavors, what flavors do you wish they had in their arsenal; which flavors would you recommend they go buy to have a better chance at making better recipes.

There are probably too many to list but it’s just supplemental anyway.

2 points

by HocusKrokusover 6 years agoHis Bearded Holiness

I think just one or two, because of we posted our collective inventory it would boggle the mind. Even if they're all "essential"

1 points

by ID10-Tover 6 years agoThe Kingmaker

I don't even know where to begin. Like if you ask me which FLV tobaccos are essential, I'll go Red Burley, Cured, Kentucky, Native, Sweet and Smokey. If you ask me which FLV fruits are essential I'll go Mango, Pink Guava, Boysenberry, Wild Melon, Cranberry, Apple Filling, and both coconuts, and then ask you if Yakima Hops counts as a fruit. And that's just two categories from one brand. What about all the other categories and all the other brands? It's too much. I can't do it. I'm going to have a panic attack just thinking about trying to do it.

2 points

by HocusKrokusover 6 years agoHis Bearded Holiness

When I think about "essential" I think more about versatility and broad application. Only a few you mentioned, while all very very good, are "building blocks" types that can be used in so many places. I think things more like TPA Dragonfruit, TPA Strawberry, VBIC, etc.

2 points

by Apexifiedover 6 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Either. Both. Whatever “essential” means to you. I would have said BEST but then someone would come along and ask me what that meant... ;P

I’m new to this and I’m also not knowledgeable on how to format and make things look nice on Reddit. Im also on mobile so I’m not sure what effects that might have as well. I hope this is alright. All of you have been amazing so far and I appreciate all of the valuable info.

  • Banana (Cap).
  • Cherry, Black (Amarena, Cherryl) (FA).
  • Cotton Candy (10% EM/Ethyl Maltol) (TPA).
  • Fruit Pebbles (SC) (Real Flavors).
  • Harvest Berry (Cap).
  • Koolada 10% (TPA).
  • Lemon Lime (Cap).
  • Lemon Sicily (Limone Sicilia) (FA).
  • Peach (Juicy) (TPA).
  • Raspberry (Malina) (Inawera).
  • Raspberry, Sweet (TPA).
  • Swedish Gummy (TPA).
  • Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (Cap).

I keep trying to edit and separate all of my flavors. It doesn’t seem to be working. They’re sticking in on big chunk. I apologize.

I'm really into drink mixes and because of that I think WS-23 and a Lemonade Base are essential. With a Lemonade base, mine is 4% LA Lemonade + 2% Flv Lemonade + .75% FA Lemon sicily, you can just add your favorite fruit(s) and you have a quick and easy drink that you can pretty much vape all day. Add to it that ws-23 and you get a icee fruity lemonade.

I also really love VT Fizzy Sherbet, it's such a good start for pretty much any summary/fruity drink mix.

Lastly TFA Marshmallow: I find this to be a super versatile flavor to add a touch of sweetness and some fluff to those bakery recipes.

Here's my stash, it's not quite complete. I have some 20 others that aren't in there and another delivery coming this week to go along with 2 carts...yes I have a problem.
