Tutorial Tuesday DIY style: April 2, 2019 Keepin it simple (Lurker Edition)

Discord link: https://discord.gg/SH9r6zP

Recap: This past week we saw some of our newest members taking footing and making their newest recipes, some even their first version of a white whale (Rum Balls)! In fact so much transpired that, even though I was there for most of it, I missed a lot. I saw some great conversations around u/mLnikon’s Raspberry Jam and Croissant that inspired a Battle of the Croissants:

  1. French Mornings
  2. briossant

A reminder that feedback is always helpful, so if you mix it up, please do leave a review (FAQ Friday: Recipe Reviews and why you should do them)!

Introduction: There’s just so much to learn, it can be overwhelming. When I first started mixing, I almost had decision paralysis. If you have some ideas and want to spitball them at some people and let them throw out suggestions on percents, other possible flavors (warning: that you probably don’t have and will likely be tempted to throw in the cart) or just walk you through narrowing down your ideas, come one, come all!

Idea: u/Apexified brought the lurkers to the fore with his DIY Digest post: This One's for the Lurkers. Many commenters were folks who are proud searchers and sidebar readers! If you want to just pop in and ask a question in the Discord, you never know, you may be helping someone who never even had the question or, even better, give someone who has learned a whole bunch of stuff the hard way to share their thoughts. Maybe even get some more recent tips on flavors as there’s so much new stuff coming out all the time.

Today’s Discussion topic is for the lurkers and new mixers: Today we are keeping it simple. Bring your recipe idea that you want to try and what you were thinking to use to make it happen, what you’ve tried and hadn’t done it for you. Members will either toss out ideas, maybe even mix some experiments with you and see how it works. u/eyemakepizza has promised he will try them alongside you! Whatta guy! If I have those flavors, I’ll be glad to test alongside anyone today as well. You’ll also get good tips along the way from everyone and anyone and some really knowledgeable folks are always around to assist.

I’d love to say a time we’ll be there, but we have folks from all over the world, so any time of the day is a good time to jump in, but there does tend to be a pickup from after 5pm EST until… ooooh 2am when the fruits of your labor ripen. (Pro tip: you can ping someone by adding an "@" and then their username.)

If you don’t feel like adding discord to your life, please do comment here, toss out ideas for people to give you tips on, or let folks know you'll be on discord tonight. Who knows? You may learn you have a stalker!

As u/EdibleMalfunction said (In one of his longest comments ever): “ Welcome everyone! Walk in the shadows no more! Rejoice and enter the light! ”

The discord group has been fantastic. I mix more because of them and I actually collaborate. When you ask questions you get feedback. That first time somebody tries one of the recipes that you collab on and loves it...you get all the feels. Lurkers come out and join the party. We had a couple lurkers join the fray this morning and it was great.

Fantastic is even an understatement. The discord is such an awesome resource for development. Or even just shooting the shit

My wife even asks me when I come out of my hole for dinner..."How are your online friends doing?"

Mine doesn't. I think she thinks it's weird

That's cute.

My wife is kinda the same, she also finds it slightly weird I think.

As a reminder, the battle of the croissants are still going!

Should you want to mix up the current ones up there - feel free to do so. If you want to leave feedback, it'll be much appreciated.
But keep in mind, both recipes are still a work in progress.

(And it's not really a battle, more of a colab gone split ways hah!)

I rather enjoy the image of two fat jelly filled croissants wrestling with each other. I really felt like these two highlight what fun in mixing comes out of the discord: collaboration, inspiration, and exploration. It was fun to watch you guys hashing it out! Plus, you know I am a big fan of emily's OG.

Very much appreciated dawg!

And it is a good image of what Humanpuck and I are doing. Sumo-Croissant wrestling?

I'll start here: I got some great ideas from u/ChemicalBurnVictim, u/ID10-T, u/MaxSavage, and u/KindGround around using Inw Vanilla for Pipe as an ry4 base and maybe to create a rootbeer ry4. Any ideas on which tobaccos to boost the ry4 would be welcomed as well as how you would try your hand at a vanilla rootbeer for pipe would be awesome. All ideas appreciated!

If you tag more than three people in a comment none of them get notifications. /u/ChemicalBurnVictim /u/KindGround and that's the wrong /u/max-savage

Try 1% FLV Native, 2% FLV Root Beer, 1.5% INW Vanilla for Pipe, 2% FLV Sweet and Smokey Tobacco. I'm not saying this will get it done but it might be a great starting place.

Yeah that’s what I get for not getting my post written up ahead of time. And sweet and smoky comes later this week. :(

Now that I've tried the sweet & smokey I'm not sure I would even bother trying to do Root Beer RY4 without it.

On the discord:

Made a comment here, got me thinking. Hopped on the discord, talked it out briefly, then mixed it up.

It's exciting to have an idea, get quick real time feedback, and have results.

If that sort of involvement doesn't make someone a better mixer, Idk what does.

Yep, this happened last night. I had a question about INW YWCC and got 2 very helpful comments in the Flavor-Talk channel.

I've tried and failed with VT Croissant and WF Croissant so so so many times. Nothing has even vaguely resembled a croissant. The result is always a flat buttery mess. Then I bravely turned my tail and fled.

Now because I am getting forgetful in my old age, in about a month I'm going to be wondering why the heck I have RES tagged you as "Sir Robin"

by humanpuckover 6 years ago

I mean you could try again with one of those up there ^, what else are you going to do with your VT Croissant?

I would love to make a cinnamon toast crunch cereal. But being new to mixing I don't have any clue where or how to start.

You should stop by our discord during "prime US time (lack of better words". We have a new mixers section, where new mixers can get help with things like their recipes.
I'm pretty sure we have a good few people who would have some great ideas for how to make a cinnamon crunch.

I'm trying to make a grapefruit menthol. I used 3% CAP Grapefruit, 1% INW White Grapefruit, and 1.5% TFA Menthol.

It turned out kind of bland and artificial. I'm letting it steep before giving up on it, but I'm not getting much of a grapefruit flesh taste from it.

I have FLV Pink Guava, FA Grapefruit, and Grapefruit Super Concentrated in my wish list. I'm not sure what prefix to use with the super concentrated stuff. Is it RF? Are those three flavours any good? I think the INW White Grapefruit and TFA Menthol are fine, and I just need a different main grapefruit flavour for the flesh.

The menthol is possibly muting the grapefruit. Try taking it down to 1?

RF SC is a good Grapefruit to have, but I don't know about SC. If it doesn't say RF SC, Its not RF SC and it's just Super Concentrated brand. I myself like a combo of INW Grapefruit and RF SC Grapefruit

Thanks. I'll try it with 1% menthol and RF SC Grapefruit.
