DIY Digest VIII: This One's for the Lurkers
submitted over 6 years ago by ApexifiedSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

#Welcome, Silent Majority > Saw this post the other day showing that about 98% of redditors are just lurking and based on the views to comment ratios on most posts in the sub, it’s slightly more skewed here than the rest of Reddit. I can relate; didn’t post my first comment here until I’d been lurking for well over a year and despite the fact that I’m approaching my 100th post, the vast majority of that has been in the last year, 3+ years after my first comment.

> So if you’re reading this and lurking, perhaps take a second to just say hello. For the sake of simplicity: Where are you from?

>And if you want to go further than that:

> - When did you start mixing? > - If you haven’t mixed yet, why not?

>And just for the lurkers, this months recipe thread (that I’m about to post) is dedicated to you. The votes will be hidden and the order of comments in the thread randomized. If you’ve been sitting on a recipe you want to share either for posterity or feedback, now is a great time to do it!

#Highlights from Last Week

  • /u/Vishousness suggests quiet contemplation and perusing of the vast number of resources here before completely ignoring their own advice in order to express gratitude to the subreddit because we’re the best, seriously. Not my words but people keep saying it, so it must be true.

  • /u/iFartThereforeiAm (really) wanted you to imagine only having 5 recipes to last the rest of your days… or some such variation of “What’re your favorite recipes?”

  • /u/Trollpotkin asked how to heighten your sense of taste

  • /u/EveryOpenEyes requested a logic check and perhaps learned what a oneshot/flavor base/premixed concentrate is.

  • /u/PM_ME_YER_RS_ACCOUNT polled the community on their sweetener preferences

  • /u/RancerDS is still going strong with the newest weekly thread (now inducted into the stickied FAQ thread) and providing a nice place to talk about Single Flavor Testing which is great, considering the number of flavor reviews has decreased dramatically in the last year or so.

Throwback Highlight

>It might be time for a new one considering that one is three years old and 100+ flavors short of their current flavor lineup.

#DIY Podcast Roundup This list will rotate through different podcasts either based on your recommendations or my discovery of new content last week. Only episodes released last week will be included. ###Here’s a playlist of all the episodes below

##Developed

> According to /u/folkart2000 "We have assembled some of the most well-known and talented mixers from our community to bring you... DEVELOPED and DEVELOPED LIVE! DEVELOPED, released every Tuesday at 6:00pm EST, shows our recipe development process in action! It's a short 15 minute episode that's fast-paced, entertaining, and packed with information. DEVELOPED LIVE airs every Saturday at 6:00pm EST and allows the community to get involved in the conversation as we break down the recipe from Tuesday's episode." The show is also edited by our very own /u/AlfredPudding.

##Mixin Vixens > From Emily (/u/mlNikon) "Mixin Vixens is a diverse all female mixing panel on a YouTube weekly show that airs live Sunday’s at 6pm Eastern. Weekly we take pictures submitted by our viewers and each of us interprets the picture and converts it from a visual to a taste. After 4 rounds of mixing we allow the Man Team to critique our recipes and give us hell. Week after week we provide knowledge and entertainment. Month after month after we pick the recipe we want judged the judges come in knock us over the head and there is only one woman standing."

##Noted > The three hosts /u/mlNikon, /u/CheebaSteeba, and /u/ID10-T (and usually one guest) talk extensively about last week's Flavor of the Week. They each try a handful of flavors (or many more than that) and give their impressions while often sharing a few recipes that include those flavors.

##The Fog Vlog An ensemble cast of South African mixers who do live mixes, flavor reviews and mixer reviews where they review several recipes from one mixer.

##Vapin Trucker > The only dude driving around in a big rig, mixing DIY eLiquid, and making videos (that I know of)

Just subscribed a few weeks ago. Haven't posted anything yet because I haven't started mixing, but I plan to start this summer. With all the BS flavor bans getting propped I figured I should have a backup plan so I don't fall back on camels again.

Heya, I'm from Serbia, been mixing for a little less than a year, vaping for a little bit more than two. I'm not a full lurker, since I've been hitting some comments here and there, but I don't find myself being as experienced as most people here, so I just contribute my own opinion from time to time.

1 points

by Apexifiedover 6 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Well I appreciate you joining in on the conversations. Based on my severely limited knowledge of Serbian-anything I imagine your DIY experience is pretty unique compared to a lot of the people here. How’s the flavor selection there?

2 points

by 4sekkondsagoover 6 years ago

Inside Serbia borders - terrible, there are some repackagings of TPA that are too expensive, but that's about it for anything thats good. Regular ejuices also suck, but there's a new line called KTS Black Edition and it's actually above average, so I guess it's actually getting better lately?

Still, pretty much, I only get pg, vg and freebase nic here and order all of the flavors from UK. So it's actually not unique at all, haha

Hello! I’ve lurked here since around 2016. Mixed on and off since 2017 but really committed last June and haven’t bought commercial juice since. Plenty of duds but only one or two that I couldn’t bring myself to finish vaping. After trying several recipes and figuring out which flavors don’t sit well with my palette (I unfortunately hate CAP’s vanilla custard and sugar cookie) I have since began using published recipes and mixing notes to branch out and adapt/develop mixes of my own. I love this community and even though I rarely if ever post simply using the search function has answered 99% of my questions. Thank you everybody for contributing and getting my vape budget down from 100$ a month to 20-25$ a month.

Jf cookie

2 points

by m4n715m4nover 6 years ago

FA cookie has its applications and RF vanilla custard SC is ok but my flavorings arsenal isn’t that large so i mostly avoid those two profiles,, stick to mostly cheesecake, bavarian cream, vbic, etc when i’m not mixing fruits/candies.

Hi from South Africa

Started mixing about 2 months ago. Started by working through /u/ChemicalBurnVictim 's guide to getting into tobaccos. I discovered that steeping time is a real thing and in the meantime mixed Grack and Leche de coco.Loved both, and between them I don't really get tired of either. Currently vaping a mixture of leche de coco and commercial coffee juice (the vape bean or something...?) anyway, really looking at exploring some coffee recipes. Even after steeping I've found tobacco vape juice to be better suited as an accent than as the main note. I'm really enjoying the experience of developing one's palate, as one would for whiskey or wine. Thanks for the awesome sub. I know a lot of awesome people are spending a lot of time to share their expertise.

Still lurking around but time is a precious commodity lately. I just ordered $75 from Nic River. 1 gallon of VG, more nic, and a bunch of flavors to make some other recipes I found. I'll try to share my notes again.

Some recipes I really want to try but require 3-4 unique flavors and cost is always a concern. So I try to stick with ordering flavors I can use across several recipes rather than just 1. Still haven't found a strawberry milk I really like. I was hoping the DIYorDie Boosted v4 would be it but it's not. Kinda giving up on that for now. Gonna try a few Seduce snake oil clones and some other stuff that caught my eye. If nothing else I can make 1000ml of the Placid clone I enjoy. /endramble

4 points

A snake oil clone was my first ADV!

Totally burned me out on pear. I'm only now starting to come back around.

3 points

Do you remember which one? I have the stuff to make a few I've found. Snake oil was my first ADV until I found Placid.

3 points

by Up2myheadover 6 years ago

Probably one of the first. Tfa pear, Bavarian cream, coconut. It was close enough for me.

It was back in the good old days, so it could probably be improved upon with what we've got now.

I have fa pear on the way, interested to see how that compares to my memory of tfa pear, which I ended up vaping solo @3% for months out of laziness.

I dunno. I tried the diy or die one not sure if this is different. I'll have to compare.

2 points

by ben_gamingover 6 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

Definitely not the same. Give it a try if you're in the market for a sweet, smooth, slightly artificial but never in a bad way, very "bright" and super-addictive strawberry milk. It's one of my top ADVs.

by oghippiechickover 6 years ago

Hippiechick here, from Los Angeles. Mixing for about 3 years, I mix only VG, due to allergy to PG, and try to use only organically produced flavors. I make mostly coffee and tea flavored juices, as well as some unusual ones like RY4 and Rose, Cucumber and Watermelon, Tootsie Roll, Fig (nom nom!), etc. I publish all the good recipes on ELR under the same moniker. I can't taste strawberry or pear, although I would love to. It is quite disappointing to me.

I'm a big advocate of vaping, and am involved in CASAA and letter writing to our congresspersons, state assembly, etc. It's nice to meet you. And thanks for calling us out!

Hey wallflower, come play with the weird guys!

I think people get intimidated by the amount of knowledge that collectively gets thrown around here. That can make it feel difficult to contribute.

What I can say I've only seen is this: anyone, and I mean anyone, that comes into this corner of the net and wants to make an honest go at this hobby WILL be helped.

No one is going to spoonfeed you info, you have to work for it. That work will make you a better mixer, and make it more rewarding. Anyone who is willing to expend even a little effort will get back many times what they put in here.

Also, just hanging, shooting the shit in the discord can really help push creativity. I thoroughly expect some true gems to come from the community mixing sessions.

This is a good place. With good people.

Ex lurker here, from Japan. I had no choice but to DIY since by law ejuice with nicotine can't be sold here. 95% of what I know is from this sub. I thought I would survive with 20 or so flavors but my drawer just keeps growing this past year. Hopefully I can get as confident as many of the old heads here and help new heads feel comfortable jumping into this rabbit hole. よろしく!

Speaking of rabbit holes; I’m at the very beginning of learning Japanese right now. If I had to guess I’d say this rabbit hole is going to be much deeper.

Well, there's only four writing systems you have to worry about... (although you can totally get by only knowing the three main ones, and probably only even just the kanji and hiragana).

3 points

by ben_gamingover 6 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

But without katakana how will you identify hamburgers on a menu? ;) Or identify other words borrowed from English? Katakana helped me identify the familiar in a sea of unfamiliarity, but that was partially due to having forgotten most of the kanji I'd learned by the time I visited.

Howdy! From the beautiful state of MT, USA. Started mixing around 9 months ago, it's been a dodgy success but still working on it.

A recipie I've been trying to work on has been:

Yogurt Breathing Dragon TFA Dragon fruit: 3.5 Inw Cactus: 3.5 TFA malted milk: 2.5 CAP Greek yogurt: 5.5

So far the flavor profile is showing a delightful blend of Dragon fruit and cactus that lasts prominently throughout the inhale and exhale, and I'm getting a slight tanginess on the exhale. I feel like it's still lacking that nice creamy yogurt flavor. And although the flavor profile is getting closer to my goal, the recipie just seems like it's two different flavors together, versus one cohesive, flavorful vape. Any thoughts on getting the yogurt to really come up in the mix and blend well with the fruit choices?

8 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 6 years agoI found my thrill on Blueberry Hill

I suggest taking the Malted Milk out. Taking the Greek Yogurt down to 4 or so, and adding 2% of CAP Creamy Yogurt

4 points

by TheSpanishSteedover 6 years ago

Sounds good! I picked up CAP creamy yogurt in hopes that both yougurts would make a good yogurt base but haven't had time to test it as a single flavor. glad to see I made a good guess haha.

Subbed just a few weeks ago, maybe a month now who knows. I'm from Kentucky, been vaping for almost 4 years I think? I used to mix juice every so often and we have some vape shops in town that do mixing in their own lab. I'd get their smallest bottle of something similar to what I wanted to mix to try it out, and then would mix it myself. I just got back into a few weeks ago because I like spending about $2.50-3 per 100mL bottle instead of nearly $30.

I’m in Montana, and I see another mixer is from MT too, which is pretty cool! Anyway, been vaping since 2014, mixing since 2016. I work full time and I’m in college, so to be honest I make others recipes more than I work on my own. I lurk because I get most of my flavor notes and mixes from here. This summer I’d like to work on more of my own stuff. I have very weird tastes, (no strawberry for me!) and I like weird mixes like Grack/Gigi and Stag Night. Once I’m able to spend more time on testing and notes, I want to make mixes that highlight the weird ways that flavors can pair together as well as work on a mix that tastes like a local favorite beer here, Cold Smoke.

Lurking euro-chick here. I have been mixing mostly other people's recipes for 1.5 years (vaping for almost two) experimented a handful recipes on my own (marzipan desserts and violet hard candies, just random euro-things lol), and did tons of flavour testing which I enjoy (i own 500 flavours +), yet I only ever ADV one or two profiles (coffee/caramel'ish). Enjoying all the vape shows on the tube because you are all so adorable. Especially crushing on mlnikon and concrete. Anyway the hobby aspect is rewarding and has helped me stay off tobacco. Cheers.

Hey there, been lurking around here for about 5 or 6 months since i decided i did, in fact, want to mix something up myself. Ive just been reading, reading, reading.. And learning as much as i can. The Fotw posts have been really helpful in learning about certain flavors, and how they can mingle and come into play with certain properties in a mix. The 1-2-3 recipes seem like a bunch of fun, and also a way to get a decent tasting mix, in a simple and easy way. These seem excellent for someone new. I haven't yet begun to mix, but from all the information here, i feel pretty solid in my list of things/flavors/collected recipes to begin with. All i need to do is make some space, and order. So thank you to those of you who not only have the knowledge, but are willing to share it, so others like myself can do this too. You guys are the real mvps.

Hey there, I've been following since last November. Been mixing for about 2 months. Subreddit has been awesome as a tool and the community seems amazing.

I've had some struggles so far copying recipes and getting them to translate into an MTL setup. 2 examples being Dragon's Milk by ID10-T, and BDPL. Tried tweaking by first raising the percentages 25 and 50% and still came out muted added some ws23 and cap ss. Helped a little but still pretty muted.

My best luck has been 2 recipes I've come up with. One being 8% inw grapefruit 2% inw cactus, 1% ws23, .5% cap ss, .25% TFA dragonfruit. Comes out pretty Tasty in both my Zenith and Hastur mini, but needs another fruit I think to bridge the flavor profile some and maybe a little less cactus.

The second is 7% Native Tobacco, 2% shisha vanilla. .25% tfa Menthol, 1% ws23 .25% tfa dragonfruit. Native is just so damn tasty, found it a bit harsh on the finish, The vanilla and coolant smooths the finish. Not my favorite but very vapeable. Excited to see what else I can do with the Native.

Haven't found any recipes that are killer MTL yet and I will keep searching. I've spent maybe 10 hours on my search, but I have maybe 40 flavors right now and buying 5 flavors to try a recipe that might not be good is daunting. Just stinks the recipes I got the flavors for aren't really working out for me. At least I've come up with something vapeable! Any recommendations would be amazing, found so few MTL recipes.

u/eyemakepizza and I were screwing around in the discord and made a lime ry4 that is also very good in an mtl setup. He’ll graciously post the recipe because he’s good like that. Hint hint. Wink wink.

Finally got around to mixing this up today, It's had 0 steep time and wow. This is literally the only recipe I have mixed up and been wowed by for my mtl setup. If it gets even better with the steep I've definitely found my ADV. Thank you I look forward to playing with it and seeing how you guys develop it. If I find anything I think is an improvement I'll share!

I will have to try gold. Are you mixing with the older version of gold Ducat? If so where would I be able to acquire that. I'd like to give it a go.

i am not mixing with the older version of gold ducat and it is still great. there was another mixer who mentioned they also liked it but added dnb and something else. i have it saved and will edit to link. i like gold but it ripped mtl. i hope you like it too. vaperstek is the site where i get most of my tobaccos that bcf or whomever doesnt carry.

Sup fam, I'm from New Zealand (anyone from nz should know this by my name).

Majority of my time as a lurker, been here two years.

My biggest weakness is coming up with flavour ideas, gathered 200+ flavours and struggle with vaping anything too sweet. It's been really interesting seeing other people's tastes and preferences. I see most people love Forest fruits, where as I can't even vape it at 1% because of how sweet it is.

Love seeing discussions here though, the amateurs or the pro's.

I started just a month ago. And have learned a bunch by reading this sub. The info here is hard to beat. And I can say I have been successful so far. But I have only made one recipe of my own and several that I have found here and other places. As my flavor stash grows i look forward to mixing more of my own.

Hi, I started mixing around 6 months ago and wanted to say thank you, the amount of shared knowledge here is amazing. Most of my experience is finding and mixing interesting recipes I find in here / atf / elr. Almost half a year in and I cannot stand bavarian cream and VBIC anymore (used to love them, now in most mixes they overpower everything for me), so I decided to shift and currently mess with INW Eucalyptus and Mint and some fruits.

hello ;p, I am from Saudi Arabia. Started mixing 1.5 month ago. I am not active here for many reasons. First, obviously because I am a noob, but when I see someone needs help with something I can help him/her with, I gladly do. second, there is no place in my country to buy flavors, so I have only like 15 flavors total (10 ml), mostly fruits ( I think it's the easiest way to start in this game), and I have to get more and play more with diff flavors before giving opinions or anything valuable to this great community. Now, I am trying to read as much as possible in this subreddit (especially in FOTW part) and other websites to make my "wish" list, which I am planning to place a big order containing 100 flavors or so. I am really into this. I have passion for it, and want my skills in DIY to develop more and more. And the final reason, my weak English stop me from expressing my thoughts as I would like to deliver, but i am trying ;p.

one of my wishes when I started mixing, is to spread this culture among vapers in my country. I want to see more mixer who share the same passion as I do.

keep it up guys, you are really helpful for us, the noobies.

Yes, I lurks.

Female mixer, here. I seem to be of the minority. I took over my BF's DIY mixing hobby, and acquired his impressive stash of flavors, and sweet baby jesus am I having fun. A lot of times it's hit or miss for me, but I'm currently working on a Hawaiian Punch recipe, as I haven't been able to find even a somewhat decent recipe that fits that profile. Hope to be able to post a finished product here someday.
