After 3-years vaping I've become sensitive to PG. Looking for alternatives to thin out VG
submitted over 6 years ago by eLicky

Hi,

I've been vaping unflavoured ejuice for 3-years I mix myself. Recently a batch of PG has been making my skin itch, its very annoying and cannot continue. Thinking maybe it was only that batch I ordered 2 other bottles of PG from different suppliers and expereince the same thing.

I know you can use distilled water and I've been doing that at 2% but for some reason its giving me a stomach ache on my right side, I've also tried vodka at 2% but it dries me out too much. I've been juggling back n forth between itchiness and stomch aches and it needs to end. I rely on nicotine heavily and need a solution.

What can we do to solve this? I've tried straight VG and nicotine but it also dries me out too much and doesn't wick all that well even with an RDA.

I'm at wits end, this has been going on for 2-weeks. The aim here is to thin out the VG enough that wicks properly and doesn't dry me out, along with no side effects.

You've been vaping for three years and this recently happened, and all the known tricks don't work. It's time to see a doctor.

Start with your GP.

Went to the local hosptial, chest xray clear, blood tests clear of infection.

Doctor told me that vaping causes honeycomb lung and because of this, we're all susceptible to getting sick and catching diseases very easily. So there you have it. Worth it.

PDO and PEG400 are your friends.

Finding them can be challenging, but its possible.

I've found some in Australia, was able to order 100mls to test. Let's see how it pans out. Thanks,

There's a website in Australia called 'New Directions' they have it. But just be aware its only cosmetic grade, while most vape bases are food grade. In saying that I spoke to someone I trust and he assured me the difference wouldn't even be worth worrying about grade wise. I did try it, it tastes clean, vapes fine, but me being 'me' and sensitive to everything it made me feel slightly short of breath. Was this because its cosmetic grade? I can't say but I doubt it. Otherwise the other source is in USA but $130 AUD shipped for 500mls, I just won't spend that incase of the same result.

To see If you're allergic, you can do an allergy test. Put some on your arm and see what happens after a few hours. If it becomes red, inflamed or you break out in hives, then yeah you're allergic. Allergies can develop at any time for any reason. If it's a minor allergy, take benedryl to stop the reaction after the test.

If none of those things happen, you likely aren't allergic and you should see your doctor to find the real cause.

*Also, your doctor can (and probably should) do allergy testing. I'm not a medical professional so don't take my dvice as gospel, but I've dealt with allergies before and if your throat isn't closing up then you can probably just do the test on yourself without too much worry of going into anaphylactic shock. Keep some benedryl close by though and if you go into respiratory distress, call an ambulance.

I think there's a difference here, I'm not allergic to PG, that would show up in many things like shampoo, deodorant etc, there's another angle of "PG sensitivity" that can cause mild issues like I'm having. Plus I've had heaps of PG on my skin in the past. I know yeah, these things can develop as time goes on.

This is proving very hard to find in Australia. Found some US based.

Would absolutely try!

I had to buy mine from Canada, even though I live in the States. I got mine here.

What a shame its not more commonly found.

I mean, you've already tried what I was going to suggest you, this is tough. Have you ever gone to a medic to check if you're really allergic to PG? I know there's also nicotine diluted in VG but it's more difficult to get.

Mmm... Try non distille pure water? Like Fiji or something, maybe that would help?

I don't know man, I wish you good luck.

Hi, I'm sensitive to pg, been mixing for a couple of years now (mainly to avoid pg). I just use water to thin my juice, anywhere from 2-10% depending on what it's for. 10% is a fair bit, this is really only needed for a pod system or something with really poor/small wicking.

If you use 10% in a sub ohm tank, it does work but after a few big puffs you can get a tiny drop of water in your mouth, which isn't actually a big deal but you just don't need that much most of the time. I'd put 3-5% in the average mix. I use this, pg based flavours avoiding recipes with high flavour percentages, vg based nic and then fill to quantity with vg.

You have to use pure water. So in my location, there is a brand of water you can buy that is guaranteed to be pure, which I use. But I also mix drugs for use in a hospital and this uses demineralised water, which would be fine to vape. Reverse osmosis and something like triple distilled would be ok. Distilled last preference.

Normal bottled water is often mineral water, which is exactly what you want to avoid, and why you should not use tap water. Dissolved minerals and salts will build up on your coils and concentrate into the remaining juice as the water evaporates, worse with tap water because this build up will be partially toxic in most places.
