Any recipe I make with over 3mg/mL freebase nic is harsh -- but 6mg/mL bottles from the store are just fine
submitted over 6 years ago by Weastie37

Pretty much the title. Do companies add something to make it less harsh, or could something be wrong with my nicotine? For the record, I would prefer something like 4.5mg/mL but even that is a little too harsh it's kind of annoying.

Also, just for fucking around one time I made 9mg/mL (I would never vape this all day) and it literally felt like your throat was burning off it hurt so much.

Edit: Also should have clarified that I generally vape 70% or more VG, so it's not an excess of PG that is making it harsh. My nicotine is dissolved in a PG solution.

All the symptoms point to bad nicotine.

Recipe(s) would help us here.

And worth trying a batch without nic to see how that compares...

I've tried tons of different recipes. The one at 9mg/mL was:
5% bavarian cream (tfa)
3% juicy peach (tfa)

One I made at 4.5mg/mL that was a bit harsh:
10% fruit circles with milk (tfa)
0.5% sweetener (tfa)

Edit: typo and formatting

Juicy Peach is notoriously harsh, it lessens after 2-3 weeks steep.

Fruit Circles with milk I haven't had, but have seen tons of bad reviews about it. Is it really lemony? I know the FC without milk sucks. Like furniture polish bad.

Most "harsh" complaints turn out to be bad nic. I still say try some without it. With something besides the afore mentioned flavors.

Looking at the percentages, I'm betting it's the recipes

5%? Or 0.5%? 5%=50mg/ml. Is your nic turning brown? Have you kept it out of sunlight and in a fridge/freezer? Do you speed steep? Heating it up will give you a more throat hit and letting the nic oxidize will make it harsher also

Typo: I meant 4.5mg/mL (not 4.5%). I usually keep it in the fridge but also my basement is cold in general so sometimes I leave it out a little. I think it looks clear when it comes out if the syringe but the container has an orange half-transparent color

I'm having the same issue. Even at .3% it's super harsh. I've tried multiple vendors, trying salts etc...I just cant figure it out.

Where did you get your nicotine?

I got it from DIYVaporSupply. USP Grade Nicotine 100mg/mL

Are you storing it properly? Is it oxidized? We need details here

I generally keep it in the fridge with the lid secured.

It's getting pretty empty and honestly I haven't tried transferring it to smaller bottles to prevent oxidation. I think I remember making a recipe at 6mg/mL when I first got the bottle and I don't remember it being too bad (it was a while ago), but now it's pretty bad.

I've had it for like 3 months.

I generally vape salt nics but I got an RDA recently.

Your nic may have turned, does it have a peppery taste to it? You may want to order some salt nic, hit up nicotine river.

yah, you'll be fine just make sure to mix at your regular strength. the reason they use it in pods is because it has almost no throat hit even when mixed at 50 mg strength. So if you mix at 3, 6, 9 or whatever it is you wanted you will be fine, it's the same strength, just without the harshness. If you still like the throat hit maybe up the PG a bit, but I don't really miss it anymore from cigarettes personally.

It does hit a bit quicker as it passes through the blood-brain barrier a little easier, but your body processes it a little quicker, nothing huge, but you will still get the same effects averaged out.

What brand nicotine do you use? I find that's a very important variable in the quality of the juice.

I had the same problem. It is the nicotine brand. Pretty much half of the 10ml booster taste like old shoes when above 3mg.

Dude this is exactly what I'm dealing with. Old shoes as one comments says, I thought socks, peppery as fuck makes my chest burn sometimes at 6mg. All my recipes are 0mg now i can't stand the nic it mkes me sick. I'm curious, what brand did you get? I also have 100mg/ml in amber boston rounds in freezer.

I use drops for my nicotine and that only roughly translates to mls @ 20 drops per ml, but I think 3 mg is around 35 to 40 drops for my 30mls and I have to use between 20 and 25 drops or they’re too strong for me.
