How do you store your flavor concentrates?
submitted over 6 years ago by The137

Tried searching but reddit search kind of sucks, hope this question isn't beat to death

I've got a bin of flavor concentrates that are all a bit over a year old. They haven't been stored in a cool dark place, but they're also not kept in crazy heat or a ton of direct sunlight. They're just in clear bottles on a shelf in a room that only gets a little bit of sun. Are these still good or is there anything I should look out for before I use them? All are Pg based, but whats the shelf life on these things?

I've always kept my nicotine in the freezer, but I don't have a lot of room in there for bulk like flavoring. Whats the next best thing? Maybe a drawer in a cool room? When I bought them I never really thought I'd let them sit for so long, what do you guys do for storage?

mine are in the fridge which is probably the best place for long term storage of your faves.

but some flavorings will separate or crystallize over time in there,

my INW vanilla shisha does this like crazy, But it melts back quickly enough when brought out.

if you do leave them in the fridge don't open them when they are cold because it creates condensation in the bottles.

Cupboard(s) in the kitchen here. Started with one set, now grown into 2 + a smaller one for steeping. I just try to store in a place that, with the doors closed, isn't going to experience regular large temperature changes & also minimise light exposure.

I don't think after a year you have much to worry about. Can always sft something just to make sure it's the same if you're worried.

Edit: I fully anticipate we will have some flavors in a year that are still okay. Sometimes even 10ml can be more than enough of a certain flavor, or could just fall out of whatever current flavor-phase you're on.

I still have flavors I bought 3 years ago, well before I actually mixed anything worthwhile. I've kept them out of direct sunlight and noticed no change aside from slightly darkening. You're probably fine.

i store all my flavours in the fridge, but take them out before mixing. to be honest I don‘t know if that’s good or bad. I just want to make them last as long as possible, since I don‘t use them that much.

I keep them, along with the rest of my diy supplies, in a picnic cooler. I order once a year and I have some that are 2 or 3 years old. I haven't noticed any degradation.

I keep mine in a drawer. It's pretty hot where I live. I haven't really had any problems with them, but I've noticed a couple of flavours that lose something or taste off after being opened for about 6-8 months. The rest seem fine, even the ones I've had for a couple of years

In my experience, citrus flavors have a shorter shelf life. I've had to replace some that were over a year old because they lost taste. All my bottles are stored at room temperature, in the dark.

I bought a tool chest and made slat square things for the bottom drawer that'll hold a 30ml bottle.

If you search 'thefogvlog storage' on youtube, those guys had some great ideas for organising systems for your flavours. My fav was to store in cheapo plastic nursery seeding tray things, with dot stickers on the caps - one colour for each manufacturer (CAP, TFA, etc) and to alphabetise. I don't remember them going into temperature and light, but I might have vagued out.
