#Hot Seat Sunday
So, this is a idea for a weekly (maybe monthly? That can be discussed.) thread… Basically it's a AMA thread with a twist – the 'victim' (or protagonist… maybe antagonist?) gets to name who is next up in the rotation. Any regular poster here is fair game, but /u/ID10-T, this isn't a séance, so no tagging in /u/notcharlesmanson. 'Regular poster' means someone who is a) alive and b) has posted in the last three months. Since I actually am not quite enough of an asshole to start this up unannounced and basically tag someone else to be the first victim, I'll take this round.
Now, in the interest of saving some likely to be asked questions from coming up multiple times, I've included a FAQ below. (Also, it should minimize the number of questions I'll face, as I expect most to be variations on the following.)
With that said (and remembering to not repeat questions from the FAQ) fire away.
Oh, and next time, it's ~~/u/ediblemalfunction~~ ~~/u/matthewkokanda~~ ~~/u/philosaphucker~~ ~~/u/eyemakepizza~~ ~~/u/chemicalburnvictim~~ ~~/u/ID10-t~~ /u/isuamadog's turn up.
#FAQ (Fully anticipated questions)
Can you just fuck off and die already? Sadly, dying is something I'm really bad at. So, no.
Why this, why now? It's just this old idea, I finally got around to it?
Do you really hate [strawberry|peach|vanilla|whatever] as much as you act like? For the most part, yes. I may slightly exaggerate for effect, but…
Why are you such an asshole? I'm just an asshole sometimes… but hey, everyone has to have a gift, right?
I finally just posted a review for GIGI after sitting on it for far too long. How does that make you feel?
Cool story, brah.
But no, really, I think we all crave, if not validation, maybe just some recognition? So reviews are cool. Especially when they're positive.
On a personal note, I haven't been very involved here lately but I have been checking in pretty often and have definitely noticed your contributions. I find some of your tastes to be questionable, but you have been doing good work. In other words, thanks!
Would you rather fight 100 duck-sized horses or one horse-sized duck?
Depends. Do the duck-sized horses have cavalry soldiers, knights, cossacks, or cherokee warriors (appropriately scaled down) on them? Are they shod or not?
My main concern with the duck would be, after I kill it, where would I find a big enough turkey to make turducken. But still, I think the horse sized duck is probably better eatin'. Those small horses would be a nuisance to try to make mortadella from...
The duck-sized horses are unmounted and unshod and probably not very tasty.
What about fighting a horse-sized Canada goose?
Those fuckers are cray-cray. But I'm fairly confident that (so long as I'm not required to be unarmed) a katana would make quick work of that neck. Assuming I didn't slip in it's copious shit, that is. But the horses would be easier.
Capella recently released a handful of flavors "inspired by the European palate." Looks like about half of them are fucked by anise. What would flavors "inspired by the Canadian palate" be fucked by?
Cream and sugar.
Too many fuckers in this pathetic excuse for a country fuck up coffee by adding that shit in copious amounts, so that would be my first guess.
Other than that, maybe maple? I mean, maple works with a lot (try cold-smoked maple glazed salmon some time... it's fish candy, but not disgusting like that phrase makes it sound. it's really really good) like savory items, spices, certain beverages (especially whiskey)...
Or maybe beer. We do make better beer than anyone else in this hemisphere.
What about poutine you hoser? I hear that (some) Canadians stuff their face with it. Do you eat that or is it regional?
It's regional, but everyone eats it.
Classic quebecoise poutine is the traditional fries/cheese curds/brown gravy. Newfie mess is that, plus (essentially) a scoop of StoveTop stuffing. Raspoutine is fries/cheese curds/Coney Island sauce. (If you get a chance, TRY THIS.) Then there's the lazy 'shake shredded white cheese over fries, douse with gravy' that really shouldn't be talked about. (Or seen, smelt, or especially eaten.)
> Can you just fuck off and die already?
Amazing.
Do you like mango or peach to eat as a fruit?
What would be a trinity of florals for a someone new to them? Not necessarily to be used together.
I actually can't stand peaches IRL. Tried mango juice, it tasted like peach, I threw up a little. So... no.
The three most important florals to start with? TFA Honeysuckle would be my first thought. It can go in so many mixes. CAP Hibiscus is too useful as a dual-use, both emulsifying and giving a syrupy vibe. And while there are so many other worthy choices... INW Elderflower is so perfect in a beverage profile that I would make it the third, and barely ahead of TFA Cherry Blossom. (note: I have yet to try FLV Blackberry Blossom, so it could well belong in the running)
Does your VG get thicker up there?
Yes. Because it is always freezing cold, no matter where in the country you are or what time of year it is. /s
Seriously, tho... in winter, there are places where it gets colder than pretty much anywhere in murica. Except maybe some parts of Alaska. So yeah, VG can end up very thick at times.
Trigger warning /s
Is your username pronounced 'jew-think' ?
As in "Jew think that this thread is a good idea?"
Obvsly no relation to Jewish origin I just spelled it that way for effect, unless that emphasis is truly meant to be there then I'll edit this.
Fairly close to that, yes. Not intended in any way related to that particular ethnicity, however.
I always imagined it was Mike Tyson trying to pronounce "Juice, Inc."
For a really long time I always read your name as Justin C. My brain never really looked at those middle letters. Then someone tagged you and I thought they spelled it wrong. Turns out I was just an idiot for a long time.
How many damn flavors do you actually have?
Honestly, I don't know the precise number. Figure a few dozen tobacco flavors, a dozen chocolate, a dozen spices, twenty or thirty alcohols, a dozen florals, a couple dozen lemon, thrity-something cherry, a couple dozen other fruits, seven or eight mints, five different cooling agents, a half dozen additives, and two sweeteners. Probably at least three hundred, I'm guessing.
According to ATF, I've got over a hundred and fifty, and I think more than half of what I have needs to be entered there still, so that 300-350 is probably about right.
What was the first juice you ever mixed for yourself?
IIRC... 4% TFA Irish Cream, .75% FA Cocoa
Turned into a strangely coconut flavored thing after a while. But still nice.
At first, I thought you said 'worst juice' which really was no contest (I intended it for myself, but didn't realize that LA Watermelon tasted that bad.) I've mixed worse, but never intended to vape it myself.
Why are most DIYers obsessed with "real tasting" fruits, beverages, and that sort of thing? Are you one of them? I find that most of the time flavors or recipes dont taste accurate or real. It's the vape version with some real qualities but far from real. Do you have any views on this?
My mixing is almost always based on "Hmm... I think these flavors would go well together" rather than trying to clone something, although I will try to 'clone' occasionally. I think 'cloning' other flavors is what that boils down to. People want to have the 'most accurate' representation of the exact flavor they had in mind. Whether that's the bowl of hand-picked blueberries in the fridge (blueberry trinity plus .2% each WS-23 and FA Polar Blast, with .1% INW Lemon Mix) or Cafe du Monde's fresh-made beignets (good luck) or a Reese Peanut Butter Cup (yeah... don't even try). But I did pretty well, I think, mimicing a Elderflower Lime Cider once upon a time. But you're right... there's going to be obvious flaws. Either you'll need to accept that nothing is ever going to give the exact mouthfeel of apple strudel that's just cooled enough to eat, or just avoid any attempts. That said, there are things I do prefer more 'real' (FA Cocoa is almost exactly like homemade hot cocoa made from cocoa powder and not a shitload of sugar and cream... which makes it easy for me to work with, because I'm so familiar with the taste) and others where I just want to taste what I expect (like, raspberries should really taste more fruity than floral) rather than necessarily accurate.
Does that make sense?
What’s it like being the anti Canadian?
Do you think u/EdibleMalfunction will do his very best to answer his hot seat questions with as few words as possible?
What do i have to do to get you try a peach juice?
I suppose I’d be game to jump in the hot seat.
> What’s it like being the anti Canadian?
Well, let's see now. Real Canadians like hockey and lacrosse (the one sport more violent than hockey), so being the opposite of that would be liking... soccer, probably. Real Canadians like good beer, so the opposite of that would be liking Pabst. Real Canadians can deal with the cold, so the opposite of that would be... Jamaicans? So, the true 'anti-Canadian' would be a Pabst-swilling Jamaican soccer fan. That makes sense, right?
> Do you think u/EdibleMalfunction will do his very best to answer his hot seat questions with as few words as possible?
Mebbe.
> Why do i have to do to get you try a peach juice?
I dunno, you're compulsively driven to lost causes?
> I suppose I’d be game to jump in the hot seat.
Oh, you'll probably be tagged in sooner or later. But I already ~~flipped enough coins~~decided who's up next time.
What do you see as the biggest 'problems' with the diy_ejuice subreddit and what you propose the community do/change to 'fix' them?
Oh fuck, where to start...
We've increased activity, but gained a lot of shitposting. I understand there are those who post valid threads who wouldn't (for some unknowable reason) if we took a more draconian stance to deleting the crap, tho, so it's hard to figure out the best solution there.
Groupthink. There needs to be more dissent within the ranks. More questioning of the majority (or at least the majority of those vocal).
/u/eyemakepizza. We could just ship him to the vet. (note to the humor-impaired: how about you do you, and forget the downvotes this one time.)
Lack of balls. (Yes, I get that this is completely in contrast to suggesting we get someone's junk snipped off, but that was a joke, really people.) Do you realize I 'won' the fucking monthly clone challenge three months in a row? Just because I would put up a recipe or two as starting points for the conversation, and then... FUCKING CRICKETS. We try to offer to newcomers this idea "Hey, maybe if you want to make some particular juice you liked, just ask in the right place and if enough people agree with you, we'll help you" and then practically nobody gets involved? Yeah, we're mostly talking about theorycrafting (because without having the original juice, you can never know for sure what it really tastes like, and with some profiles there isn't really time to steep multiple attempts or anything) but even so, why isn't there a dozen or more people chiming in with suggestions? For that matter, why is there nobody who asked for these clones giving feedback about possible recipes so they can be iterated and improved? Why is there maybe four or five people who chime in on the 'what can I make' thread on a regular basis?
people too inept to search. is killing them all still illegal?
> u/eyemakepizza. We could just ship him to the vet. (note to the humor-impaired: how about you do you, and forget the downvotes this one time.)
I get to go on vacation?!?
Dear Mr Think
- What are the 5 limes that you use the most?
- What do you mix when you just want a nice lime vape?
- Do you have a favourite non-floral recipe?
- Have you tried VT Persian Lime? If so, what juthinc?
- What makes you happy?
- a)FA Lime Tahity Cold Pressed
b)FA Lime Tahity Distilled
c)CAP Lemon-Lime
d&e)I really don't know what else I use regularly. I only have a half dozen or so limes. - I've never really gone for a straight-up lime. If I wanted to, I'd mix the two FA limes at a 5:1 ratio, throw in .1% each of cactus, hibiscus, lemon mix, and honeysuckle, and .2% each on the coolants, and start from there. Maybe some fizzy sherbet on the next try.
- Brigade isn't floral, right?
- I don't think I've tried it. I'll have to check to see if it's in my backlog of flavors.
- Happy? Wasn't that a TV show with a drug-induced hallucination as a recurring character?
Thanks juthinc - one last question. When you are looking at other people's recipes, be it on ATF/reddit/ELR etc, what's your initial reaction when you see recipes containing a lot of concentrates (10, 11, 12+ flavours)?
Usually, it's "how the fuck can they use that many flavors, and only two of them are ones I have?"
But in all seriousness... sometimes it's a sign of skill, sometimes it's overkill. I don't react to the number of flavors any more than I react to the total flavor percentage (so long as that is something less than 20% or so). It's a matter of what flavors are used that determines if it's a good or bad recipe, not how many of them there are.
How did you figure out that you could DIY juice?
I vaguely remember back before I started vaping, I knew a guy who vaped, and he gave the impression that he made his own juice (in addition to building mods). So when I finally bought my first mod and found what they charged for juice, I figured I'd look into a way to do it myself ASAP.
Describe the coolant of your dreams, what would it do?
It wouldn't have any off taste. It would cool both on the inhale and the exhale. It would totally mask the heat from the vape. Most importantly, it wouldn't be prone to building a tolerance.
What's the most disgusting juice you've ever had?
What's your favorite site for flavors? / Would you recommend buying direct from the manufacturers?
-
I sampled a bunch early on... but while a lot were just not good at all, the two that were worst were (IIRC) Dragon's Breath from Steamjunk and The Habs. (I should never have used LA Watermelon. It just doesn't work for me.)
-
It's so tough... Best customer service is thebrokevaper.ca or Chef's. Selection is either Chef's or diyejuice out of Abbotsford. Price is BestGlycol out of Quebec. It's really hard to choose...
2a. I've bought direct from RealFlavors (when they had their special on) and I think Cappella (I think they had a special when they released the SL flavors?) as well as Inawera and solubarome. For certain flavors, and depending where someone is, ordering direct is a reasonable choice. I don't think I'd ever order direct from Flavorah (I'd rather get their stuff rebottled and cheaper) or TFA/FW/CAP/LA (I can get their stuff pretty cheap elsewhere, and it would be extra expensive to get from them due to customs.)
What's your ADV?
That would be GIGI. I actually only make it occasionally tho... I tend to slack off on recipe development, and build up a coolant tolerance, when I have it. I just tend to vape it and ignore any other juice.
So what are you vaping right now?
I've got a cold atm, so I'm just finishing off some old mixes. One was one of my banana tobacco variants, and another was one of my iterations of Bloomin' Tangerine. (After a couple months steeping, I find myself wishing I had a better idea of which precise version it was, as it's a nicely candied floral tangerine now.)
What's your go to flavor and percentage for a majority of mixes if theres one applicable?
diy_ejuice has been described as a circle jerk before. Do you feel that is an accurate reading of the forum? How do you feel the opening up of the posting by loosening restrictions has had on any potential growth and diversity in the forum?
I think the 'circle jerk' thing mainly is about the 'hot flavors' bit. Like how every damn recipe for a year or two had VCV1, or how either unholy vanilla or INW Shisha vanilla ended up in half of all recipes for a while.
Of course, sometimes, those with strongly held misconceptions ('speed steeping', 'hotplate magnetic stirrers', 'universal total flavor percentage', 'DAAP is harmful', etc) use the term to describe how the vast majority jumps in to debunk such nonsense pretty much unanimously. I don't see a problem with this activity, only the characterization of it.
I have always noted your level of participation in weekly threads and helping newcomers without fanfare or expectation of recognition. How do you see your role in the shaping of this community? What advice can you give to a new mixer who wants to participate but just doesnt know how or where to start?
Well, it's two pieces of mutually exclusive advice.
First, this is a online community. Any online community should first be lurked in, and understood. Then you can choose the role you want to fill in the community and behave accordingly.
Second, grow a pair. Don't let nervousness hold you back. This is a online community. If the worst happens, you create a new account and try again. But you'll never fit in unless you insert yourself into the community.
So... do your research, but then just jump in.
ps: stop damaging my rep.
Oh, just noticed I skipped your first question.
I see myself sorta like the crazy uncle at the family function. Not really liked, but if he's not there, there's something missing. And 'crazy' in a sort of Sam Kinison, no filter, no fear of telling disturbing truths way. And a little bit psycho way too.
I see myself as a agitator. A instigator. And occasionally, I'll slip into teacher/mentor mode, when I feel the need. And to confuse the fuck out of people who think I'm just a asshole.
I re read your faq on newbie mistakes. I really liked that part you said about mixing other people's stuff and then trying to learn from it. There was good knowledge in there. Do you mix much of other people's recipes? Is there one particular mixer who generally publishes recipes that lines up with your particular tastes? Are there mixers whose vision or passion you vibe with? How often do you mix up someone else's recipe if you think it would be a little outside of your range if you think you might learn from how they've used a flavor or just tried to do something special? Have you ever mixed something that was super hyped just to know for yourself what people like about it?
Actually, I think you misread. I don't actually mix many other people's recipes. There are a couple exceptions, but I do suggest, at least for anyone learning the craft, at the very least read every recipe that has flavor use descriptions and development notes. The fact is, there's only so many recipes that really appeal to me to vape, but if I have a choice between experimenting with something I have reason to suspect I'll enjoy (something I'd be developing) or something that I don't think is a match... pretty obvious which I'll choose.
But reading other people's development notes and how they used certain flavors to bend other flavors? Invaluable. I don't really need to mix up some watermelon-peach blend just to see how some hibiscus and cactus turn it into a nectar, I can use the hibiscus and cactus together with some different fruit that I like. That sort of thing.
As far as other mixers whose recipes generally appeal to me, I now (and since about a year into vaping) like a good tobacco recipe... So /u/chemicalburnvictim's tobacco recipes qualify. But really nobody lines up with my complete range.
I vaped GIGI and it really is quite good. I also tried your apple blossom and silk road recipes, although im still waiting for the month steep on that last one. They're all good, if not all for me. I unfortunately went mtl on the apple blossom and I dont think that was the way to go. Do you ever vape mtl? have you tried your own recipes mtl? Also, I noticed that your mixes are really smooth in general. How determined are you to find the perfect balance in a mix?
I'm actually not a MTL type. I have a pod system I'm gonna try out one of these days, but... I didn't smoke cigarettes MTL style, I always drew hard just like with weed. So the whole MTL thing never really made sense.
I don't really obsess on perfection, but I do believe in pursuing it. (See Vince Lombardi's quote on the pursuit of perfection.)
ps: have fun next week
I’m going to make a recipe and name it after you. What should the flavor profile be or which ingredient(s) must it include?
Good question.
I think it's almost impossible to nail down like that. I mean, my 'normal' range is mostly fruit/beverage types with cooling, with side trips to tobacco country. So if it isn't a tobacco, it almost has to have a WS-23/FA Polar Blast presence... otherwise it would almost have to have FA Red Burley.
I mean, you could go the Silky route, and design a recipe around the flavors I despise most (stawberry, peachlike, vanilla, black licorice, etc.) or just avoid them like it was a recipe I would make. If you want to try to make something I would like, starting an idea around chocolate is not a bad plan (but maybe challenging)
https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/share/a614b871-ee99-4ef1-bdb9-690bb47da587
It looks quite appealing. I'll have to mix some up when I get a chance. All flavors I use quite frequently, and they all work well with any number of the other ingredients, so it should work well. At a glance, I wonder about how it would fall on the juicy/dry spectrum, but it's definitely in candyland what with the honeysuckle and blackcurrant so maybe it doesn't need juiciness.
