Modifying recipies
submitted over 6 years ago by Bountythe

Hi guys, im pretty new to DIY and hoping for some advice. When following an ejuice recipe - if i dont like a particular flavour and want to leave it out, should i add more of everything else to maintain a level of flavor? or should i just leave it out?

depends on what it does in a mix. if it's just a fruit flavor you dont like in a fruit blend, sure just leave it out. or swap it with something that may work better for you. at the end of the day, it's all about your taste, right?

but if it is in there as a supporting role, yet you still dont like it, you might ask yourself what the mixer was thinking when they added that. if you dont like cactus and it's in there but it isn't super low do: (1) keep it but lower the amount so that it adds the wetness without the flavor funk? (2) swap it out for something else of your choice that you think could work to add wetness but not gross you out? (3) do whatever you want nilly-willy anyway?

in the end it's you who's gotta vape it. i'd just be careful if it were one of a few components in a particular part of a mix like one of three custarrd/creams since it's probably there for a reason to boost some particular note.

I thought there might have been a standard sort of a calculation for this situation but what your saying makes a TON of sense. I only vape fruity flavours so that makes it somewhat easier.

I made 2 batches. 1st just leaving it out and 2nd adding 50% more strawberry (favorite flavour) in place of the missing watermelon. I will make a 3rd with standard recipe but just a touch of watermelon to see if it brings anything (mabye freshness) beside the taste. Im going to dive into some more research.

Thanks for the detailed reply mate, appreciate it.

Hey good on you to test it out. You might find that the third batch has that little extra lip smacking goodness as strawberry and watermelon go together pretty darned good. Plus wm tends to be a softer flavor in general

Its the more subtle parts of mixing that im yet to fathom such as softening/wettness/smoothness/thickness. Its a bold new world but im pretty hyped to figure it all out

That is entirely dependent on the recipe.

Keep in mind every flavor is put into a recipe for a reason. So if you take one out, or adjust a percentage you’re possibly going to alter the entire recipe.

not every flavor is in a recipe for a reason. or not always a good one. i dont mix up a looooooot of other people's stuff but I used to. and i dont think there were reasons for everything. to be fair, atf tends to have less of those, and i've gotten much better at choosing mixers and mixes but there are a ton of recipes that don't have all the ducks lined up in a row.

Remember that one reason a flavor is used is because it's the best (or only) one of its kind the mixer had. Not every mixer has 37 cherry flavors, or 24 lemon flavors, or the 263 mango flavors /u/ID10-T has.

Oftentimes an ‘only’ for me for some things. That’s what I was trying to say. That.

If you switch the numbers for cherry and lemon that's actually not far off from the truth.

But, ATF lists 6503 public recipes. The "what can I make?" function tells me I can only make 3634 of those with the flavors I have. So I still have a long way to go.

Super good advice mate, someone has told me to just make a few batches and keep notes. Ill use your advice too and give it a go. Its a 6%tfa strawberry/ 5%fa kiwi/ 4%fa watermelon / 3%tfa sweetner. Im going to kill the watermelon so hopefully the experiments work.

That seems like an awful lot of sweetener tbh...

If you added more strawberry for that, you're probably gonna have a bad time.

Can I just confirm with you that it's not TFA Strawberry (Ripe) that you're using? Looks like the percentages for yetisuncle's Kanzi Clone recipe, just he uses TFA Strawberry (Ripe), rather than TFA Strawberry.

It depends, really.

My approach is to deconstruct the recipe. Understand what each flavor is doing in the recipe, beyond adding the taste of that flavor. Figure out another flavor that is better and replace the original with something that will play the same role only taste better. Like switching TFA dragonfruit to CAP hibiscus, or a strawberry to cherry extract. Or meringue to marzipan. Also, you need to understand what baggage your new flavors will bring, and make them work together in the recipe.

I do it all the time. If I know I don't like a flavor, I'll omit or replace it with something I do like. If a percentage looks to high, I'll lower it. The key is, to know your flavors and personal preferences.

I think it’s a lot like cooking and soo much trial and error and ultimately recipes are just guidelines here like in a cookbook is the easiest way to explain it and everything everyone else has said is correct also. I Just enjoy the learning process and am so happy to have found an alternative to cigs that tastes so good too! Welcome to our community ....;)

Very true. There is nothing wrong with taking a recipe and making it your own.
