Juice taste testing with RDA.
submitted over 6 years ago by OmoElegba

I just got my first RDA ever just for juice tasting, I regularly use tanks. And let me tell you.... WOOOOOW, wtf! The taste and cloud production is otherworldly! Now I know what you all have been talking about. It's probably alike being deaf all your life and finally hearing sound. Just orgasmic, ladies and gentlemen!

Now that I've announced my arousal, I've come to you for advice once again.

I want to use this new RDA for juice taste testing but I find that I can get upwards of 12 hits before my cotton runs dry, by that time I'm so nicotine buzzed i could probably fill tank with my spit and it be vapable for a 18mg user. I always heard RDAs were much easier for taste testing, but how? At this point I'm in the same predicament as using a tank- too many hits to dry the cotton and get to the next flavor.

What must I do to quickly taste test multiple flavors? Is it the cotton length? Can I trim a coil-sized piece of cotton that just barely fits inside the length of the coil?

Help me my juicy bretheren.

... Whut? Mate you don't have to dry your cotton you can just rewick. Kinda annoying to do mostly because it often involves washing the rda out but if you're just taste testing take 3 or 4 hits and rewick. Even if you vape your cotton dry there will be some previous juice left over

Buy some cheap cotton from aliexprwss. I recommend buying the cotton bacon copy from Victor vape (from the Victor vape store! There are stores that sell copies of his cotton or even fake cotton bacon for 80 cents a pack but I doubt those are worth it)

The Victor vape stuff is tasteless and oderless. It works incredible. It's 6 euro for 5 packs with free shipping.

I have a MASSIVE pack of muji. Enough to wick a thousand rdas but the profile is that it had a terrible cotton taste. I need to vape 3 to 5 ml trough it before the cotton taste goes away so I stopped using it. When I first started vaping I wouldn't notice but as I got more sensitive to flavors etc and my ability to taste has opened up after a year of not smoking I really taste the disgusting cotton.

I was using it because it was cheap and tried an old pack of that Victor vape stuff and it was a world of difference. Anyway don't spend a fortune on cotton but cotton does matter.. I doubt paying 20 euro for a pack of kendo will matter that much though.

Yes siirr you're completely right. I mean it's my first time ever holding an RDA in my hand haha.

I got a complete coiling tool kit, a drop dead RDA clone, a huge assorted pack of 20 different types of premade coils, 2 big pack of cotton wicks and some spare rubbers for 20 bucks shipped 👌

I have enough to vape for 2 years. The cotton is epic tasting, the coils are pristine, the toolkit is quality and the drop dead is pure magic, no leak, no prob!

Amen to the rda brethren brother!~ AMEN. Yeah you don't have to take 12 hits, just take 2-3 hits or however many you like and then just remove cotton, dry burn coil, and put new cotton in. You also don't need long cotton tails - just a little stub will do to fill the coil. People have even used no cotton and just dripped on the the coil (but i don't do this). The RDA flavour step up is wicked indeed.

You need some fat nasty coils for cotton less, like alien claptons or something that can grab hold of the juice, and even then, only burst the fire button a couple of times. But I agree, just a mm or so cotton tails are more than enough for 2-3 puffs.

Yeah DIY OR DIE has a video with the no cotton method

Not for. Me though. It's better to just use a tiny piece of cotton and rewick every time event hough its sorta annoying since I also feel compelled to wash out the rda every flavor i test

I'm def gonna wik a small piece of cotton just barely inside the coil👌 tonight I'll be making some bomb flavors.

Use lower nic when testing flavors? There's no way you can get to know a flavor after 3 rips.

I think we're all curious to what you're used to vaping, and what RDA and coils you got going on now.

Yeah. Might want to have phrased that differently :)

you've pretty much nailed it with your guess - you can put in a more modest amount of cotton and just 'paint' your coil and wick instead of filling the RDA. (for most rda's). Single coils work best for this but any will do. Just wick it a little short ( A LITTLE short) and put your juice directly on the cotton and the coil. 4 or 5 hits later it's going to start to go dry, and you can try another flavour if you like. Just be careful, it's not hard to get a dry hit doing that, and break the wick in a little by making sure it's good and saturated and wicking well the first time.

Or as was suggested just swap out cotton - that may be advisable if you're testing entirely different profiles, like going from bakeries to fruits or something where it's hard to get the flavour out of the cotton.

Thank you my brother this is very good info. I'll take this to my next tasting sesh this afternoon. Gonna rock the fuck outa this RDA.

And well you should - RDA's are still the most rockable bit of kit we have :) And they are a godsend for flavour development. Using the same rda and the same coils consistently can help develop a 'baseline' performance tester for flavours, then you can try them as they get close to finished in other devices and see how they do. You will quickly find out the perfect amount of cotton for your preferred number of puffs, and painting them makes sure they're good and saturated without having to empty the juicewell each flavour. You should be able to taste when it's just about dry, and then painitng it with the new juice should wipe out most if not all of the previous flavour in most cases. Just remember when you get close to perfect with a recipe try it on clean cotton and break that cotton in a bit, just to make sure you're tasting the flavour pure before locking the juice recipe down permanently.

Good luck! - sounds like the weather for your afternoon will be 'cloudy with a chance of flavours" :)

Yes, short wicks definitely make sense for testing. If you're getting buzzed while testing, have you considered trying 0mg, even if just for the first round of testing?

I keep a bottle of 85/15 VG/PG and put a few puffs worth on as a palate and cotton cleanser in between flavors. I am sure it's more accurate to just rewick for each flavor, but I find that this works better than just dropping one liquid right on top of the other.

Also, I think this may be obvious but drinking water in between flavors seems beneficial to me.

Hope some of that helps, and thanks to others in this thread for their good ideas. Good question!

Nice mate. But to test flavors I'd get a very cheap wasp nano rda. Its 10 euro on aliexpress, super easy to wick and coil and it has incredible flavor. It's also a single coil which makes it easier te rewick during taste testing etc

Sounds very good, much different to my rda experience lol. What rda are you using if you don't mind me asking?? I'd love to get a decent one too to finally get what all the hype is about, I love my nunchaku til the end of time but would also like to use my squonk sometimes cause goddamn I didn't pay $100 for it to be just sitting there on the shelf haha.

That's why I got a $20 squonk to start out with. It's like we can't swim yet. Here I am dipping my toes at the shallow end. I look over at you doing a backflip off the diving board lol.

Hahah I feel ya. That's how I feel seeing people with kennedy purge mods lol. The squonk itself is the best mod I have, I just need to find a decent rda for it now. I have the drop solo but it's either the coils or cotton, or rda itself that's letting me down. I say rda out of the three though

Ah, I have a couple of Drop Solos. I find that they do better with large coils. A freind sent me a big N80 fralien and I loved it. I tried a few other coils like Wotofo but they didn't do it for me. So I ordered some big Caterpillar Track coils by Geekvape. They are only a buck for a set of them on Eightvape. Anyways, it's working much better now. The Drop Solo is a great RDA IMO. It just doesn't do that well with regular sized coils.

I'm using a drop dead clone. Got it for like 5 bucks. Amazing experience. Has a Squonk pin.

i have a nunchaku, and i love it too so i can relate. Get a hadaly or haku venna. They give the cleanest and most accurate flavor profiles in my experience. Csmnt or goon if going for double coils. The classics are classics for a reason :) however, you won't find a squonk pin for the csmnt anywhere, so beware of that.

Just vape in tc mode. You can dry out the cotton and it won't burn. When the flavour is gone you can switch. Except for menthol. That shit sticks around forever.

Can you temp control kanthal premade coils?

No. Switch to ss316 as they work well in both modes.
