Your No-Frills guide to DIY cbd ejuice
submitted over 6 years ago by isuamadog

Here is your no-frills post on mixing with CBD, as promised.

#TL;DR I add 0.5g of cbd to 7.5ml pg, dissolve, add 7.5ml vg to make final mixture @33mg/ml concentration cbd ejuice.

Introduction:

CBD is gaining popularity today. You can find it in edibles, isolate, ejuice, mct oil, tinctures, creams, candy, water and whatever else they’ll market to you. If you want to go the DIY route and make your own ejuice, you’re in luck. It’s easy to keep it simple and I do not expect this to be a challenging post to write.

Disclaimer:

I do what I do. Please add information to mixing, vaping, or whatever floats your boat about CBD because you should. I’m going to stay on topic mostly about mixing ejuice. If you want more information on efficacy or whatnot, you could try r/cbd r/hempflowers, or r/hemp. Also, go ahead and correct any misinformation here or add your proverbial $0.02 because you should.

Notes:

First and most important, is that cbd is not vg soluble. So you’re not going to mix this in some 70/30 mix. Second, you’re going to need some cbd. I have always used powder isolate for mixing ejuice. If you want to add terpenes, I actually have no experience with it. Please chime in here. I’m sure you could use shatter just as easily as powder with a bit more shaking, warm bathing, or patience. I vape cbd at low watts in an mtl tank. I prefer it that way and it works for me.

Method:

I use a glass bottle and put in 500mg of isolate. Afterwards, I add pg to make a 15ml final mix at 50/50. I have heard you could get as much as 1g in there but I’ve never tried it. With this, your final concentration will be 33.33mg/ml. That’s enough for me for a daily dose, and easy to double for days where that’s what I want. Any higher isn’t worth the risk of having them separate on me if the cbd recrystallizes. If you use glass bottles, heating it will make the cbd reblend easily enough but, again, I’ve never had this problem.

With the 500mg in pg, I have only ever had to shake it to get it to dissolve. One time I had some bits that didn’t dissolve right away. They were gone by two days of sitting in the pg mix in the drawer. Easy peasy. Alternatively, I have used my electric kettle to make a warm bath at 140 degrees F and it will dissolve in less than 5 minutes, generally 2. I’ve heard that this can compromise the CBD so now, I just shake it a little and wait.

Once it’s dissolved, I’ll add enough vg to make my 15ml mix and I’m done. I go flavorless if I want to use it as an additive to my tank or I like it mixed with tobacco flavors because I like tobacco flavors. You do you.

Please add your experience or just post some crazy comments below because you should.

Nice guide. If anybody needs any CBD Isolate let me know (UK based but ship worldwide to any CBD legal country).

If anybody has issues with it dissolving, using about 0.3% Triethyl citrate will help.

Thanks. Was hoping you'd also correct any misinformation or fill in gaps on the terpenes etc if you can.

It seems fine TBH. I personally go higher PG, but it seems 50/50 is working well for 33mg per 1ml. I may even go this route on my next personal batch to see how it is, I've always played it well on the safe side but 50/50 will be better. Has your juice ever started recrystallising later down the line or in cold weather?

Terpenes can certainly be added.. but go very easy.. they are MUCH stronger than flavour concentrates (also much more expensive and seem to be about £10 per 1ml at retail price in the UK).. start with something like 0.5% or 1%, you can always add more. Most popular are the strain profile mixes you can get which will have a mixture of terpenes in at certain ratios to try and mimic the terpene profiles of real weed strains, or you can buy isolated terpenes individually, such as Myrcene (in almost all weed and where a lot of that "skunky" flavour/smell comes from), Limonene, Linalool, Caryophyllene, Alpha-pinene and Beta-pinene etc..

EDIT: Slight correction on the part about shatter, I personally wouldn't do it.. if I was going to make one from shatter I would go a similar route to how people make THC shatter carts, 1g to 1-2ml liquid, Only PG/PEG, terps and emulsifier.. and not cotton wick or normal tank. Ceramic CCELL TH2 carts like what you get THC shatter liquid in pre-packed in some countries. They are 1.2ohm I think and 7-10w seems good to me.. they are 510 thread.

Hope that helps.

What's a good price for CBD isolate?

£20~ a gram.

Thanks for the info! How many grams of ~~VG~~ PG do you dissolve one gram of CBD into, and how long does that mixture last the typical person? Is the practice to take that solution of ~~VG~~ PG/CBD you've made and stretch it out as an additive to other juices you've mixed or how are people affording this? I am poor, please guide me.

by ASCiiDiTYover 6 years ago

CBD isolate won't dissolve in VG. Please read the guide again, it wasn't me who wrote it either.

I have no idea how long it will last you, I vape about 7ml a day in a concentration that works out exactly the same as this guide and it works out to be roughly 200mg at retail price roughly £4 per day, but I sell isolate myself and buy in wholesale amounts, it's not costing me £4 a day. I also have 3mg of nicotine in my personal juice.

They have full spectrum products as well and whole sale price is 15ag(only have to purchase 15gs to get wholesale price)

I live in TN where hemp/CBD is legal. They sell it pretty much everywhere, but I've never even heard of powdered CBD. Can I legally buy that off the internet or do I have to go some other route?

2 points

by ASCiiDiTYover 6 years ago

If CBD is legal where you are you can certainly buy it online legally. I've shipped it all over the world and had it stopped by customs a few times and always released (apart from AU & NZ), lab results included in the package.

..Japanese customs required more information from me and the customer but released it very quickly.

I've never had anything stopped going to EU or USA from UK.

by Tonker_over 6 years ago

I see, that's nice to know. Thank you!

Out of curiosity, have you tried the powder straight? If I bought a gram of CBD powder, that's the first thing I would do...

(I'm not dumb enough to snort it, don't worry, but I would be kinda tempted to just straight up eat a gram on my day off and just snooze all day,)

3 points

by ASCiiDiTYover 6 years ago

I have indeed eaten a gram of CBD isolate for the sake of science. I also sprinkle it in joints sometimes, you can also dab it neat if that's your kind of thing, using dab rig or dry herb vape etc..

Just fyi, cbd is now federally legal in the states

2 points

by EarthboundQuasarover 6 years ago

CBD became federally legal in all 50 states when the 2018 Farm Bill passed, iirc.

2 points

by whutevnalmost 6 years ago

yes Federally...but states still have their own regulations. For ex, until a few months ago, In Missouri you were supposed to be registered to legally carry it and in order to do so you need medical proof & for only eligible reasons (mostly extreme like epilepsy), even after legalized, i think counties still have the final say too. Stories are still coming out about raided Head shops just for hemp-produced cbd.

But even in illegal states i have never had a problem with any shipments, even of thc product : )

How does vaping it compare to tinctures? I tried it on a lark, expecting it to be total snake oil, but it instantly throttles my knee inflammation. I've had knee problems for nearly 5 years. Now I take 3 drops of CBD oil on my tongue every few hours as needed and I'm back to 100%. I'm even starting to add weight to my (necessarily) wimpy squats.

But that oil is nasty and it fucking drips everywhere. I'm very open to mixing my own concoction for vaping, but does it retain its efficacy? I hear all the extra little compounds in oil are vital to CBD's potency.

4 points

by isuamadogover 6 years ago

I’d go safe with an answer like “everyone’s different” but what I’ve heard is that vaping is more rapidly absorbed and lasts less long. I prefer the drops to vaping isolate because I prefer full spectrum to isolate. But then I prefer flower to all. Dry herb vaping the flower is my favorite for cost efficiency but smoking it rolled up in a blunt for just a big fat chillout session.

All that to say, I take it for anxiety and relief comes strongest with all the little goodies for me too but isn’t always as practical as you’ve said.

I’m sure you could diy most of this stuff from all kinds of sources.

Not sure that was helpful.

> I add pg to make a 15mg final mix at 50/50

I don't get this. If my math is correct, shouldn't you add 15ml of PG? not mg? 15ml would be approx 15g of PG. But where did you get 15mg? I'm confused :D

3 points

by ASCiiDiTYover 6 years ago

I think he made a type, ML not MG.

by isuamadogover 6 years ago

Yeah. I probably should have just said 7.5ml pg

The first line in your Method section, "15mg final mix" should be 15 mL I'm guessing.

Great guide! I just got a little tripped up there so I'm letting you know.

Curious, then, how Koi pulls it off. Their White is 50/50 vg/pg and I bought the 100mg/ml. I use that by just adding it to the juice I mix just like I would nic. Seems to be helping, and doesn't change my flavor. My final mix is usually 60/40.

2 points

by shoelaceninjaover 6 years ago

I'm not too familiar with koi, but I know some companies quote the mg/ml of the oil itself and not pure cbd content. The oil they use could be as low as 20-30% cbd or up to 90%+.

1 points

by PurplePandaPythonalmost 6 years ago

Yeah Koi is tricky with their wording too. I failed a drug test from eating their gummies. After doing some research I found out that full spectrum contains a very small amount of THC. On the packing it says “”Made with 0% THC” and not “Contains 0% THC”. Quite a few people have failed from that.

1 points

by shoelaceninjaalmost 6 years ago

Yep. I suggest looking for companies that can provide lab test results upon request.

CBD Distillate is processed by many many companies across the country right now, and many states are just allowing or organizing farming of hemp, so a lot of people are getting into it and have no clue what they are doing. I see it first hand, local farmers about to pull the trigger on a grow and get schooled. Some don't know that their irrigation systems are insufficient and will get clogged, some think they can just process hemp into crude, planty oil and call it a day. They can't, because no businesses that make cbd products want crude; only distillate or isolate.

While there is no 100% thc-free distillate though, companies with lab tests will at least show if their raw oil comes back showing THC non-detectable. Different test labs will have different thresholds where they declare it non detectable, though it shouldn't vary wildly enough that light usage will make you fail a drug test. The legal limit I believe is .03%, while lab tests will test down a couple of more decimal points.

1 points

by earthy_swirlalmost 6 years ago
  1. What type of drug test did you fail?
  2. How many mg were you ingesting daily?
  3. How many weeks/months were you consuming the product before you failed?
  4. What is your height/weight?
  5. How active are you?

Also, out of curiosity you mentioned it as a ml daily dose, are you using your mix sublingually?

I was using it as an additive to my mtl tank and using it as a daily dose for a while. Eventually I moved to just dedicating a tank to it. Then I moved on to flower which I found much more effective for my needs.

I’ve only used oils sublingually when I started.

Have you tried making a vapable blend using distillate or a full/broad spectrum cbd oil? Or have any suggestions on something as an alternative to pg?

I'm interested in making something that could be moreso organic and vegan friendly and the broad spectrum oils have other cannabinoids/terpenes and can be thc free.

1 points

by isuamadogover 6 years ago

I haven’t tried to do broad spectrum myself. I wouldn’t know where to begin.

1 points

by shoelaceninjaover 6 years ago

From what I understand, the isolate being pure cbd can give you a quicker, stronger effect but won't last as long. The full spectrum and broad spectrum oils having additional cannabinoids and terpenes that work together synergistically and can give you even more of a therapeutic effect; you could find your dosage to be quite lower and be longer lasting.

Worth looking into. The distillate I think you can straight up put into your own cartridges to vape.

1 points

by isuamadogover 6 years ago

It’s definitely more effective. I’m just not sure how I would make it a broad spectrum vape. Would you extract yourself from the flower and then dissolve the byproduct in pg to vape? Or, can you purchase broad spectrum raw material to diy is what I don’t know.

I prefer flower for these reasons and have found greater results when I tried full spectrum tinctures over isolate.

Yeah I don’t know why I made it so awkward when I wrote it. That should be added as a tl;dr

Is this not weak as hell? I want to make my own from isolate, but I'd need to vape so much to get 50mg of CBD, hardly seems worth it. How do companies make so much stronger vape juices?

I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but CBD alone just isn't as effective as whole plant extracts. Google "entourage effect".

> Medical researcher Jason Dyck has recently acquired the largest known database of medical cannabis users in the world, containing information on about 40,000 medical cannabis patients in Ontario, and has just begun searching for patterns.

> An expert on the medical properties of plants, Dyck agrees the brightest prospects for cannabis lie in more complex combinations of its compounds. Other bioactive agents, such as terpenes, responsible for marijuana’s flavour and odour, may play a significant part in targeting whatever ails us, he said.

> "While a purified cannabinoid may be of benefit, the benefits are enhanced when there is a broad spectrum of (the plant's) chemicals involved,” he said, noting that one reason producers isolate CBD from hemp is to bypass regulatory hurdles, because the hemp plant has no THC.

> "We're most interested in a broad-spectrum plant extract, because the general feeling, so far backed by science, is that CBD and THC are not the only bioactive agents with benefits, whether they work alone or synergistically with other components," said Dyck.

> Different combinations of those agents "could change things drastically," he said.

Do you think if you use less CBD crystals, you could use a pre-made 50/50 (PG/VG) mix to dissolve the crystals? I would like to have a final mix of 10 mg CBD per ml, which is like 3 times lower than your mix.

1 points

by isuamadogabout 6 years agoRenaissance Mixer

I mean it’s worth a shot. I’d personally start with flavorless/nicless so you can warm bath it to help it dissolve if it doesn’t work. Also try some flavors with triacetin if you still have some stubbornness. Supposedly that helps it blend/emulsify.

Edit: oh and start small.

I bought some CBD isolate and mixed it with E-liquid 50/50 and then heated it up this was yesterday and it keeps recrystallizing. I put one gram in 60 ml

1 points

by isuamadogalmost 6 years agoRenaissance Mixer

That’s 125mg/~7.5mL which should be fine if you started from the pg only. Try adding triacetin (tpa dragonfruit if i remember correctly see comments above) or a bit more pg? I’ve vaped as high as 70pg/30vg.

Will doubling your recipe cause crystalization?

Also can this mixture be added to finished vape juices?

1 points

Not if you double everything ime. And yes I’ve added it to vape juice. I found it wasn’t an efficient way to get cbd in my system eventually and just use a tincture now when needed

I made a batch based on your guide. I didn't heat it up however, I used the shaking method. Thank you very much for responding on such an old post!

I'm using it for cervical degenerative disk disease & spinal stenosis in my neck. I've been having issues with my hands lately so packing bowls, sprinkling isolate or even taking a tincture out of a dropper gets a bit fucky. It's also super messy to smoke bud when you've got hand coordination issues. This was really easy to make and no messier than ejuice usually is. Tinctures don't usually kick in fast enough to help in the moment either, I just need to calm things down long enough to get to heating/ice packs to help with the issues usually. I wasn't comfortable messing with terpenes but have tons of carts in varying strains so I've just been hitting them back to back with my newly appointed CBD vape in hopes of producing the same sort of entourage effect. So far so good, thank you!

1 points

by isuamadogover 2 years agoRenaissance Mixer

I'm happy to help! That makes sense then for you to go with vaping as a Route of Administration. I also have some terpenes but haven't tried them yet. Seems a bit like following an ejuice recipe with percents and such from what I can gather. As for heating it up, it seems to just speed the dissolving for me because I am lazy and hate shaking stuff for that whole 30 seconds. I assume the terps are pg based on their viscosity so I'd guess and say, measure that out and top off with whatever pg was needed to get to half and then add the vg after it dissolves maybe? You can probably inch up the cbd isolate every batch until you figure out where that sweet spot is before it crystalizes out of the vg too. I've also heard that there are emulsifiers that help suspend the cbd like whatever is in tpa dragonfruit (triacetin?). That's a lead if you want to follow up on it, let me/us know how it turns out, yeah? Hope you get your relief at a proper cost!
